This week, Josh and Drusilla celebrate the legacy of Sam Neill with In the Mouth of Madness (1994). From wiki: “In the Mouth of Madness is a 1994 American supernatural horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter and written by Michael De Luca. It stars Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston. Neill stars as John Trent, an insurance investigator who visits a small town while looking into the disappearance of a successful author of horror novels, and begins to question his sanity as the lines between reality and fiction seem to blur. Informally, the film is the third and final installment in what Carpenter refers to as his "Apocalypse Trilogy", preceded by The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987).[2]Also discussed: Castle Rock, Lovecraft Country, Golden Eighties (1986), Dracula A.D. 1972, Psychomania, John Carpenter, Sam Neill, Kevin Costner, New Line Cinema, and more. NEXT WEEK: Sisters (1972)Bloodhaus: https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/https://letterboxd.com/bloodhaus/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) Directed by John Carpenter Starring: Sam Neill, Jürgen Prochnow, Julie Carmen, David WarnerThere's a scene in In the Mouth of Madness with a "little fucking flappy arm thing" pretending to be an unspeakable cosmic horror, and honestly, that's the whole movie in a nutshell. This week we dig into John Carpenter's 1994 slow-burn descent into madness starring Sam Neill as an insurance investigator who gets way, way too invested in finding a missing horror novelist. Spoiler: reality is a construct and also everyone in New Hampshire is exceptionally fucking stupid. In this episode, we discuss:Sam Neill Carries This Whole Damn Movie — He's arrogant, he's a prick, and he still manages to sell a believable descent into madness. We break down why his performance is doing more heavy lifting than anyone else in the cast. The Flappy Arm Problem — When your Lovecraftian monster looks like a dollar-store bath toy, you've got issues. We get into why the movie's practical effects and CGI just don't hold up, especially next to what Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 were doing years earlier on bigger budgets.Two-Thirds Boring, One-Third Bonkers — We go back and forth on pacing: one of us thinks it's a slow burn that pays off, the other thinks it's a whole lot of driving around New England before anything actually happens. What's the Worst They Can Do? Chop You Up — We rant about horror movie logic, townspeople who won't run from hellhound Dobermans, and why nobody in this film has ever considered just flooring it.We Also Talked About:MTV's The Real World Reunion (Seasons 1-3) (Youtube) – A nostalgic dive into early reality TV and why Robert Smith deserved better than "Friday I'm in Love."Don't Pick Up the Phone (2024) (Netflix) – A Netflix documentary about a decade-long phone hoax scam that hit fast food chains across the country.Sherman's March (1985) (Ok.Ru) – A bizarre, unexpectedly charming documentary about one filmmaker's romantic misadventures while loosely retracing a Civil War general's path.Kick of Death (1997) (Tubi) – A Troma karate flop so boring it's not even fun to make fun of.Billy the Exterminator (Tubi) – A guilty-pleasure reality show about a Hot Topic goth exterminating alligators in Louisiana. The Death and Life of Lamar Odom (Netflix) – An Untold documentary on Netflix covering addiction, tragedy, and a truly unbelievable overdose story.Pharmacist Grant Harting on YouTube – He's a licensed pharmacistin four states, buys gas station boner pills, breaks down the ingredients, and takes them before going on a blind date to see what happens. Some of the above links are affiliate links — if you purchase through them we get a small kickback, and it's the best way to support the show.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. Chosen by Mike Burton of Genuine Chit-Chat fame, Dune was released in 1984 and was David Lynch's ambitious attempt to bring Frank Herbert's famously dense sci-fi novel to the big screen. Produced by Dino De Laurentiis, the film had a reported budget of around $40 million and was shot largely in Mexico, with huge sets, elaborate costumes, miniature effects, and enough invented terminology to make a cinema audience quietly panic into their popcorn. The cast is absolutely stacked: Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Jürgen Prochnow, Patrick Stewart, Max von Sydow, Sean Young, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell, and Sting, because apparently space needed a tiny pair of metal pants. On release, the film received mixed reviews and struggled commercially, but over time it became a cult VHS-era oddity: messy, fascinating, visually distinctive, and still discussed decades later by people trying to work out what on Arrakis just happened.Checkout Mike's Genuine Chit-Chat here and Star Wars Chit-Chat here.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a universe ruled by emperors, noble houses, secret orders, and one extremely valuable substance, a young heir is pulled into a war for control of the desert planet Arrakis. There are prophecies. There are giant sandworms. There are whispered thoughts, glowing eyes, floating villains, and political schemes so thick you may need a flowchart and a lie down. One family will fall. One boy will rise. And one 1980s sci-fi epic will ask the eternal question: what if Shakespeare, space opera, and a fever dream all shared the same VHS tape?FUN FACTSDavid Lynch turned down the chance to direct Return of the Jedi before taking on Dune. The film was adapted from Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, widely considered one of the most influential science fiction books ever written. The soundtrack was mainly composed by Toto, with Brian Eno contributing the haunting “Prophecy Theme.”The famous “weirding modules” were invented for the movie, replacing some of the novel's more internal and philosophical martial arts concepts.Several longer cuts exist, including a television version credited to “Alan Smithee,” the traditional pseudonym used when a director disowns a project.Lynch has often avoided discussing the film in detail, largely because he did not have final cut.The sandworm effects used miniatures and practical techniques, giving them that distinctive handmade 1980s fantasy look.Sting's Feyd-Rautha became one of the film's most memorable images, thanks partly to a costume that appears to have been designed by someone very confident in the future of underwear.Patrick Stewart's Gurney Halleck charging into battle with a pug remains one of the most gloriously baffling images in all of vintage sci-fi cinema.SUPPORT THE SHOWSupport the Show If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here. On night 8 of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994), from writer Michael De Luca, the film is directed by John Carpenter.  Insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) is hired to track down missing and hugely popular horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow), whose books are causing widespread insanity among his readers. Following clues to the fictional New England town of Hobb's End, Trent discovers that Cane's writing is literally warping reality and bringing cosmic horrors into the world. As the line between fiction and reality dissolves, Trent must confront the terrifying truth that he is merely a character in Cane's final, world-ending novel, driving him to madness.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 35 m, is rated R. We caught the film on the Hoopla app but it is streaming on Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#InTheMouthOfMadness #MichaelDeLuca #JohnCarpenter #SamNeill #JohnTrent #JürgenProchnow #SutterCane #JulieCarmen #LindaStyles #DavidWarner #DrWrenn #JohnGlover #Saperstein #CharltonHeston #JacksonHarglow #BernieCasey #Robinson #PeterJason #MrPaul #FrancesBay #MrsPickman #Horror #SupernaturalHorror #Drama #Fantasy #Thriller #Mystery  @Hoopla @Tubi  @PrimeVideo  #31DaysToHalloween #SpookySeason #Day8  #FridayFamilyFilmNightOpening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio

John Carpenter directs this eerie tale. A publishing company hires John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator, to track down a missing author, Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow). Cane's books seem to drive certain readers to go crazy, but, hey, sales are through the roof! The head of the publishing company, Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston), sends Linda Styles (Julie Carmen) along with John to the town of Hobb's End which may or may not exist. Their goal is to find Cane and find out what is happening as the world seems to be falling apart/meshing into hell. Rest assured, there will be plenty of suspense and Lovecraftian horror along the way. RTS attempts to avoid reading Cane's newest novel. They fail and now live in a demon world. Anyone have a black crayon? Jeremy now resides in an ever-changing nightmare painting. La-Mar rides a bicycle on the endless highway stretch of darkness. Are you just fiction in a story? It's a wonderful mixed bag this week on BEHIND THE LENS thanks to director TERRY LOANE and his beautiful new film THE LAST RIFLEMAN, and actor COLIN CUNNINGHAM with his scene-stealing performance in HE NEVER LEFT (not to mention his ongoing role in Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga"). Kicking off the show is the perfect film for this Veteran's Day – THE LAST RIFLEMAN – and my exclusive interview with director TERRY LOANE. Inspired by the true story of WWII UK/Irish Veteran Bernard Jordan, we follow the adventure of Artie Crawford (age 92 3/4). After the death of his wife, he sneaks out of his nursing home and makes his way to France to reunite with his brothers-in-arms and honor the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Starring Pierce Brosnan as Artie along with John Amos in one of his final performances as a US veteran, and Jürgen Prochnow as a veteran of the Nazi war machine, there is plenty of emotionality in this film that is balanced with a light visual tone. Then, he's baaaaack! That's right, the wonderful COLIN CUNNINGHAM returns to #BTLRadioShow talking about his latest performance in the slasher/serial killer/thriller HE NEVER LEFT, something very very different from his other performances as well as "The Little Pink House" which we spoke about with his last BTL appearance. A blood-soaked adventure to be sure, HE NEVER LEFT is chilling and Colin's performance is explosively over-the-top with anxious freneticism as well as a wonderful character arc filled with growth and redemption. And no surprise here, I Colin also discusses his role in multiple chapters of Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga" as he dives into Costner's directorial style and the beauty and meaning of the unfolding story of the American West. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's part 2 of our ‘Behind the scenes' series, and we spend some time in the “Shadow of the Vampire”. A film in which we learn that Count Orlok was a pioneer of ASMR videos; a ferret is no substitute for a fresh young cameraman; and Cary Elwes can do a pitch perfect impression of Jürgen Prochnow. A wonderful blur of fact and fiction in which FW Murnau employs a real vampire to portray the lead in the silent classic “Nosferatu”, this is both a darkly comic slice of pseudo-history and a satire on the filmmaking process; with the driven director becoming an amoral monster, and his monster becoming a precious diva. An absolutely perfect cast bring this vision to life, with beautiful cinematography and loving recreations of the sublime original. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

We begin in an asylum for the criminally insane.  A man in a straitjacket is hauled into the facility and thrown into a padded cell.  Visited by a psychiatrist, the man begins telling his story, while acknowledging that something awful is happening in the outside world.  We flash back: renowned horror writer Sutter Cane has disappeared.  Seeking to locate Cane, and collect his new novel, In the Mouth of Madness, the head of Arcane publishing, Jackson Harglow, hires crack Insurance investigator John Trent – a man with a nose for frauds and whose skepticism seemingly knows no bounds.  Trent has already run into a spot of trouble – after reading a couple chapters of Cane's latest, Cane's agent becomes an axe-wielding maniac, crashing through the window of a local café where Trent is dining.  The why, for now, is left unexplained, but as we learn, Cane's novels have a strange, disorienting effect on its ‘less stable' readers.  Trent and Cane's editor, Linda Styles, head to Hobb's End, New Hampshire, where they believe Cane is living.  Trent and Styles discover a place that seems almost too quaint to be real, and almost immediately, a terrible secret that upends Trent's life as he knows it, and has major repercussions for Sutter Cane fans worldwide. For our first Wolfgang Peterson film, we decided to cover what is often touted as the best submarine film ever, and one that is on most people's Top Ten War Film lists. Starring a young Jürgen Prochnow as the Captain of U-96 and a cast of mostly unknown actors as his crew, this is the thrilling story of one German submarine crew in the Battle of the Atlantic, stalking Allied cargo and military ships in an effort to reduce their enemies' combat effectiveness and disrupt their supply chains. Based on the experiences of author Lothar G. Buchheim, the film uses a combination of models and very accurate moving sets to really make you feel the claustrophobia and descent into hell that these submariners experienced in a way that does not glorify war, but instead makes us ponder its cost. *We watched the 1997 Director's Cut (208 minutes), available streaming on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/.../B00BZBPB98/ref=atvdpsharecur Next Episode: Last of the Mohicans (1992) Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments! We're using his library of knowledge on 2000 AD as well as talking long walks and Sticking plastic things to existing guns to make them look futuristic. --- Hallmark of Greatsness is a comedy podcast about the greatest stories of our age, Hallmark and made for TV movies. Listen here  --- Judge Dredd is a 1995 American superhero film[5][6][7][8] based on the 2000 AD comics character of the same name. It is directed by Danny Cannon and stars Sylvester Stallone in the title role, a law enforcement officer in the crime-ridden futuristic metropolis of Mega-City One. The film co-stars Armand Assante, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider, Joan Chen, Jürgen Prochnow, and Max von Sydow. It was filmed entirely at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom, and released by Buena Vista Pictures on June 30, 1995. The film takes place in the year 2080 and depicts a dystopian world. Following an unspecified disaster that turned Earth into a "cursed" wasteland, the survivors established a corps of Judges whose role combines that of police, judge, jury and executioner. In Judge Dredd, Dredd, one of the most dedicated Street Judges, has been framed for murder by his own half-brother — the psychotic Rico, who plots to take over Mega-City One with an army of superhuman clones. The film was produced by Charles Lippincott and Beau E. L. Marks, with a screenplay by William Wisher Jr. and Steven E. de Souza. Reviewers criticized the film for its script and perceived lack of originality and faith to its source material, along with Stallone's acting. The film is often considered to be one of Stallone's worst films,[9][10] but its visual style, effects, music score, stunts and action sequences were praised, and the film was nominated for four Saturn Awards. A reboot film, entitled Dredd, was released in 2012.
