Actor, writer Jon Daly (Ding Dong Delicious) joins for an epic discussion of David Lynch's 1984 version of the science fiction classic DUNE starring Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Patrick Stewart, Kenneth McMillan, Dean Stockwell, Max von Sydow, and Sting. Based on author Frank Herbert's mammoth novel, DUNE was conceived as a mega-budget blockbuster to follow in the footsteps of STAR WARS, only to be met with scathing reviews and a disappointing box office take. In the decades since DUNE, Lynch repeatedly proved his dark genius with more sinister original films, demanding reevaluations of his most commercial, yet least successful directorial effort. What shall be the lasting legacy of Lynch's flawed but phantasmagoric version of DUNE, sandwiched as it is between Alejandro Jodorowsky's never-realized version and Denis Villeneuve's stunning but spare 2021 adaptation? Strap on your stillsuits for a gom-jabbing conversation that will forever redefine Dune Discourse, complete with diversions into M3GAN, broken bones, James Cromwell, tar, TÁR, Jay Leno sightings, wrestler-actors, THE EXORCIST, and much, much more! Jon Daly can regularly be heard on the podcast, TWO JONS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT available wherever you get your podcasts.
Theorizing that we could time travel by researching and reminiscing, airwave personalities Ben and Chris entered their recording studio to develop a not-so-top-secret podcast, known as 80's High. Pressured to achieve maximum edutainment and topical variety or risk losing listeners, Ben and Chris dove into the 1989 television sensation, “Quantum Leap,” and vanished. They awoke to find themselves in the past, surrounded by inexplicable Centurions, blue screen technology, and unfathomably good writing for a TV series. Fortunately, contact with their own time was maintained through brainwave transmissions with Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, the show's stars, whose phenomenal acting and broad talents kept audiences captivated as they put right what once went wrong. Join Ben and Chris as they venture through time and space to unravel this lightning in a bottle; hoping that each episode of 80's High will be the one that brings them nostalgic bliss. -- Can I Borrow Your Notes? -- Unsolved Mysteries Of Quantum Leap With Donald P. Several years ago, I wrote a time-travel film treatment called “Song Trippers” about a quartet of lonely, damaged people who found solace through music. Each lost soul connects to a song that transports them back in time to the place in their youth when they were the happiest. Of course, we all know that music has magic power. There are songs that can trip my memory far from the here and now to earlier states of joyful wonderment, and sadness, too, if that's what's called for. It's strong medicine. For each episode in this series, I'll take an 8 Track down from the shelf and share it with you, along with some special memories, bonded by that spiritual epoxy that has forged the framework of my life's scaffold. -Bill "Captain Billy" MesnikFROM THE DIG THIS ARCHIVES- THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF CAPTAIN BILLY'S MAGIC 8 BALL! -AFTER THE GOLD RUSH, by Neil Young, (Reprise, 1970)This allusive, abstract ballad, inspired by a screenplay by fellow Topanga resident, Dean Stockwell, was lambasted by critics, and loved by the record buying public, making the album of the same name Neil's second biggest seller. Few people care to parse out the thorny meaning of the lyrics, which take us from a knight's festival, to a squalid junkie's basement, to an alien spaceship coming to herald a new world.Maybe it was all the acid I was consuming, but the thing made perfect sense to me – I simply flowed with the imagery, and bathed in the keening vocalism of the protagonist, an acquired taste to be sure. I also fucking loved that flugelhorn! If you're a fan you might prefer Heart of Gold, Cinnamon Girl, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, or many of his other myriad time trips. All good, all good. All I know is that I love Neil dearly, and I'm glad he's been with us all this time. Through it all, he has remained Neil. He has always demonstrated a stubborn independence, and made his own way against a sea of antagonistic forces and voices, corporate and artistic – a level of integrity which I so admire, and, from which I often fall so short. For years, Tell Me Why, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart were on my set list. One reviewer covering my act wrote that when I sang high I was an ersatz Neil Young, and when I sang low I was a bargain basement Cat Stevens. Of course I did; I was finding my voice, asshole!

Our new episode, The Dunwich Horror, with NoHo BoHo Czech Style Pilsner, kindly given to us by North Hollywood's @lawlessbeer drops this Saturday. H.P. Lovecraft's insane story gets the Roger Corman/AIP treatment in this 1970 horror picture that kicks off shOctober. Dean Stockwell is Wilbur Whateley, the shunned weirdo of the shunned Whateley clan of Dunwich. And honestly, he should be shunned. He wants to open a portal to bring "The Old Ones" into our dimension, which ain't gonna be good for us. Wilbur and his twin are the product of an obscene coupling, with Wilbur getting the looks. Sandra Dee, trying to shed her goody goody image, comes along as the object of Wilbur's desire and disturbed plans. It's weird, trippy and freaky, and we paired it with a clean, refreshing, quaffable Pilsner from Lawless. It seems a good pairing, what with the lawlessness of those rascally Whateley's. Join us this Saturday. Thanks for listening! Check out our website SUBSCRIBE: to the show on Apple Podcast or Google Play. You can also find us on Audible, Stitcher, Spotify, and Listen Notes. "Oh Boy!" This week, we revisit the cult favorite, Quantum Leap. Quantum Leap ran for 5 seasons and 97 episodes from 1989 to 1993. Created by Don Bellisario, the show starred Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a time traveling scientist, who leaps into people from 1953 to 1987 to help them and correct something that went wrong in the original timeline. Dean Stockwell, who co-stars as Admiral Al Calavicci, Sam's best friend, who appears as a hologram that only Sam can see and hear. They are aided by Gushi, the project's lead programmer, and Ziggy, a supercomputer. Despite successfully correcting the past in each episode, Sam continues to leap randomly to another place and time, "putting right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home" And for our snack this week, Steve reviews Pop Tarts, and Megan tries a candy necklace. We talk about the cereal wars of the 1960s and the thievery that resulted in what we now know as the Pop Tart. Did we love the science fiction, mystery, romance, comedy, drama show? Did the Pop Tarts taste like cardboard? Listen to find out! Dead Mikey Number Eleven :Human Highway : The Musical So the gang finally got to see the movie Jean had been anticipating all season long, Human Highway – starring and directed by Neil Young. The flick also stars Dennis Hopper, Dean Stockwell, Russ Tamblyn, Sally Kirkland and Devo. Right at the top of the episode, Doug decided the best way to do an episode about a cult film most people have never seen – or even have access to – was to turn the podcast itself into a musical. So he grabbed his acoustic guitar and made up songs about it on the spot while Heather and Jean explained what it was we'd seen. Taping this episode was a blast. Footnotes and Follies: In an issue of Rolling Stone, members of Devo mentioned Sally Kirkland sued Neil Young over the cut tendon she suffered at the hands of Dennis Hopper. On this episode of Death By DVD we've gone on holiday by mistake. The 1987 British black comedy WITHNAIL & I is discussed at length! Possibly the quintessential British movie, join THE Linus Fitness-Centre & Harry-Scott as they pour a shot of lighter fluid and get into the politics of WITHNAIL & I. Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain. This is an episode you DON'T wanna miss! And remember all hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hair are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight.HEY, while you're still here.. have you heard...DEATH BY DVD PRESENTS : WHO SHOT HANK?
