Look at where our tenacity and dedication have gotten us. All the way to episode 100! It is true what they say: if you stick at something long enough in a sequential order, you will eventually reach EPISODE 100. Don't quote me, but I think Mark Maron said that. But what an episode 100 this is. We look at the seminal work of a visionary, David Lynch, who passed away earlier this year. Starring Kyle McLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Laura Dern, Dean Stockwell, and Dennis Hopper, this is the story about finding an ear and figuring out who it belongs to. And Frank, obviously. Beautiful, disgusting, violent Frank. Little did Laura and Ryan know that we recite Frank's lines more often than not in everyday life, which is probably why people may perceive our relationship as far from golden. But that's your fault; you have no sense of humor. Just shut up and listen to our podcast!

Down to the Sea in Ships).

Unclear and Present Danger

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John are joined by Max Read — of the Max Read Substack — to talk Air Force One, the 1997 action thriller directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring none other than Harrison Ford as The President. Air Force One also stars Gary Oldman, Glenn Close, Wendy Crewson, Paul Guilfoyle, William H. Another mind bending podcast. The day David Lynch passed, I felt like I heard him say "So why didn't you interview me?"  I kind of chuckled to myself - thinking, "Of people I know, who knew David that well?"  I haven't seen all his films - just a few, so I missed the many Harry Dean Stanton appearances. As fans of the podcast know, I knew Harry Dean, played guitar with him, he was close friends with Luana Anders (who passed in 1996) and when Harry Dean passed, we interviewed him.  He has shown up a number of times, also with Billy Paxton, whom I started me career with, and with whom Billy and Harry worked on "Big Love" together. So "any friend of Harry's is a friend of mine" - in terms of how we are able to communicate with people offstage.  In this instance, I started to ask Jennifer if David had been the person I heard saying "Why didn't you interview me?" and before I could ask it - she said "He is." It's on camera. I thought it, started to speak; she answered it. That's how this works. Jennifer and I have been doing this together for ten years - every week, if one can imagine. And this time, all this past week I've been hearing "messages" from Mr. Lynch. Some examples; my son suggested we go and see "Inland Empire" at the Egyptian.  Two people in the audience told me afterwards that they saw him "sitting off to the side" - exactly where he says he was, in the last ten minutes of the film. It's when Laura Dern's character merges with her "old self" in the film.  A bright light appears as they embrace.  That's when these two said they saw him in the theater. It's not my opinion they saw him - it's not my belief they saw him - I asked, and he said that "indeed, he was there at the theater, and that he was surprised more people didn't realize it." David was an early proponent of Transcendental Meditation - something he learned from Maharishis Mahesh Yogi - the same fellow from Rishikesh that the Beatles went to visit. In one of his interviews (that I watched this week after hearing from him) he said that he had met MMY and learned TM from him. And since then he would meditate twice a day. As he said in an interview, "once in the morning" and once during the lunch hour. Also, I learned that he went to Bob's Big Boy in Burbank (a fan favorite for my family) and every day at 2:30 would have a "malted and a cup of coffee."  Sometimes he'd add fries. So we went to Bob's and saw the huge display of memorabilia people have deposited in his honor - as well as saw there was an hour wait to sit at the counter. So we moseyed on down to Paty's - where we were able to sit at the counter and get our milkshakes, coffee and fries. We sat next to two David devotees - people who had met at Disneyland and become pals over David, and were doing the same thing we were doing. And we talked about David and we talked about this podcast... that I had yet to do. I told them to "tune in this week and we'll see if we can get him to come by."  So a shout out to Derek and Sharon who are fans of Mr. Lynch. It's an unusual event to be sure - people are spontaneously honoring him, not for any other reason than they were moved by him, or learned something from him. Also, Jennifer did not know David's work - as she notes in the podcast. So she didn't know - couldn't know - that David's nickname for Laura Dern was "tidbit" - his nickname for Naomi Watts was "buttercup" - nickname for Patricia Arquette was "Solid Gold" - his old pal Jack Fisk is married to Sissy Spacek, Isabella was the Oscar nominee - Ms. Rossellini - and his nickname for Kyle MacLachlan was "Kale" (because producer Dino de Laurentiis couldn't pronounce Kyle on "Dune") -I forgot to ask him if he'd seen Dino yet, but as he said "I've seen them all." He had a message for "Doug and Steve Martin" who directed his short promo for "Eraserhead"  and the Woody Woodpecker dolls... He mentioned talking to Dennis Hopper (Luana's pal) Dean Stockwell (whom I directed in the film LIMIT UP) and Bill Paxton (who I met while he was doing Aliens and we wrote a script together.) He had messages for Steven Spielberg and Mel Brooks - all pals of his, and for his family "I had the ride of my life and I can't wait to do it again!" - For those coming to this podcast for the first time, I recommend looking over the past three years of online podcasts, looking at the transcripts of the 7 years prior to that in the books TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE and BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE 1, 2 and 3.   Jennifer and I have been doing this weekly for ten years.  If one wants to book a session with Jennifer, find her at JenniferShaffer.com - and if one wants to book a meditation (visit to their council) with me, go to RichardMartini.com and follow the links.   But as David said; all you need is a shake, some fries and a coffee to talk to him.  Enjoy. He said something fun and

Welcome back folks! In this dose of madness we discuss successes and fails of online shopping at Temu and the blistering noir Compulsion! Compulsion is a 1959 American crime drama film directed by Richard Fleischer. The film is based on the 1956 novel of the same name by Meyer Levin, which in turn was a fictionalized account of the Leopold and Loeb murder trial. It was the first film produced by Richard D. Zanuck. Although the principal roles are played by Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman, top billing went to Orson Welles. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/speakeasy-noircast/message

https://open.spotify.com/show/2BsfYRiIzhDgs6EBByeUuL?si=c7f306c63a1d467a Dune is a 1984 American epic space opera film written and directed by David Lynch and based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel Dune. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The soundtrack was composed by the rock band Toto, with a contribution from Brian Eno. Its large ensemble cast includes Kyle MacLachlan's film debut as young nobleman Paul Atreides, Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell, Virginia Madsen, José Ferrer, Sean Young, Sting, Linda Hunt, and Max von Sydow. The setting is the distant future, chronicling the conflict between rival noble families as they battle for control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. The planet is the only source of the drug melange (spice), which allows prescience and is vital to space travel, making it the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe. Paul Atreides is the scion and heir of a powerful noble family, whose inheritance of control over Arrakis brings them into conflict with its former overlords, House Harkonnen. Paul is also possibly the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure expected by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. After the novel's initial success, attempts to adapt Dune as a film began in 1971. A lengthy process of development followed throughout the 1970s, during which Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott unsuccessfully tried to bring their visions to the screen. In 1981, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired Lynch as director. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $30.9 million from a $40–42 million budget. At least four versions have been released worldwide. Lynch largely disowned the finished film and had his name removed or changed to pseudonyms. The film has developed a cult following,[4][5] but opinion varies between fans of the novel and fans of Lynch's films.[6] Wikipedia Prepare for a wild excursion into the heart of Belizean jungles and the ruins of Laminai as we recount an adventure that's part comedy, part thriller, and all real-life in this episode of Sounds Awesome Patreon.

From the director of The French Connection, The Exorcist, and.....Cruising :o....this was somewhat of a comeback vehicle for the late, great William Friedkin in the mid '80's after a series of highly publicized flops and commercial disappointments.  It's a hard-edged LA-based crime story revolving around two Secret Service agents (William Peterson, John Pankow) attempting to take down the ruthless California King of Counterfeiting played by a then baby-faced Willem Dafoe.  And along the way there are no shortage of violent scrapes and shootouts along with loads of gratuitous nudity...and the whole thing is scored by pop band Wang Chung no less!  Yes it's time to revisit a true product of its time which also co-stars Dean Stockwell, John Turturro, Darlene Fluegel, and John Turturro in one of his earliest on-screen roles.  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

I'm joined by Nashville's leading film critic, curator and connoisseur Jason Shawhan to discuss THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN. An overtly feminist, covertly queer cult classic from 1985 that deftly explores America's rampant classist bias, unbridled misogyny, protest movements dissolving into marketing opportunities, modern technology's role in amplifying voices of the devalued underclass, the benefits and dangers of our fame-obsessed world and so much more - all wrapped in a a shiny, gorgeously photographed container. Generally dismissed by critics and audiences alike upon initial release, THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN is a true cult classic, beloved by everyone who resonated with another gem of a film discovered by most viewers via home video and cable. Fabulous performances from Helen Slater, Peter Coyote, Keith Gordon, Dean Stockwell and Yeardly Smith (AKA the voice of Bart Simpson and a brilliant score (Pat Benetar's iconic "Invincible" was written expressly for BILLE JEAN and produced by our friend Mike Chapman), this movie's comment on America is as relevant today was it was upon original release .For more Jason Shawhan: https://x.com/jshawhan?s=21&t=2TXy7cSLOHZN-Ef4khov0A http://rebirthoftheflesh.blogspot.com/ Jason & Sam Inglis host FEARLESS PRETENDER- The Only Podcast That Provides Extensive Analysis of Every-Single Film & Television Show Featuring Jennifer Jason-Leigh. https://open.spotify.com/show/17u9DSmsiByQ56LijyERoo Here my guest spot on the episode devoted to the bizarro Rodney Dangerfield classic EASY MONEY https://open.spotify.com/episode/5WVJsIaVmRSx4HfxjtZvm1?si=IRopJVbdQYWytOJ4tWXIGg Participate in future Movie Clubs, support this show and make your life complete by heading to https://www.patreon.com/CraigAndFriends and signing up now! Billy Friedkin, maybe the weirdest (in a good way) major American director of his generation, almost doesn't make sense on paper; wait...the same guy directed 'The French Connection' and 'The Excorcist'?  But the ups and downs of Friedkin's storied and somewhat haphazard career are what makes him one of the most interesting directors to consider. And 'To Live and Die in LA' is some kind of crazy masterpiece, punching WELL above its weight as a non-studio, non-union middling-budget (6 million dollars) independent LA neo-noir. Filled with superlative near-first-timers like John Turturro, William Petersen, John Pankow, Willem Dafoe and stellar supporting work from the likes of Steve James, Robert Downey, Sr,  Darlanne Fluegel, Dean Stockwell, Jack Hoar, and Debra Feuer, TLADILA is easily consumed as genre fare...or more diligently dissected as the incredible example of top-tier filmmaking and production design and location and stunt work that it also is. Needless to say that's where I'm taking my cues! Available now on a newly restored 4K UHD and blu-ray disc, TLADILA has frustratingly not been available to stream but my plea here is that you avail yourself of the physical media and set aside an evening to appreciate this great work of FUN and ART. The Summer of 1988 was filled with BIG, seminal comedies (actually including the movie Big) which were sizeable hits and had long-lasting legacies including Bull Durham, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and previous episodes Midnight Run and A Fish Called Wanda.  Kind of lost in the shuffle was this small, quirky mob comedy directed by Jonathan Demme though it did feature a very promising cast including Dean Stockwell, Mercedes Ruehl, Oliver Platt, Alec Baldwin, and Matthew Modine.  Leading this cast was the illustrious Michelle Pfeiffer kind of playing against type with BIG hair, a big attitude and a prominent New Yawk accent - she plays Angela, a Long Island housewife who is....you guessed it....married to a mobster played by Baldwin.  Things don't end well for her husband so Angela decides to try to start a fresh new life with her son AWAY from the Mob....but not every one is onboard with that including the FBI and local mob boss Tony played by Stockwell in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination.  And hilarity ensues..... Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
