In Scotland, the government states that all children will have the opportunity to experience a four-night residential trip at some point during their time at school. With at least two-thirds of our educational experts based in Scotland, we took this opportunity to examine the role of education outside the classroom. This week co-hosts Ross Borthwick and Isabel Rich are joined by Tom Mason, Head of Outdoor Learning, to discuss the value and impact of learning outside. Together, they look at the origins of outdoor education and its transition from the periphery of the education world to its central role in our understanding of wellbeing and child development. Kate Petrie is a 54-year-old classically trained actor, voice actor, drama teacher, and makeup artist from Morayshire, Scotland. Drama school and stage acting offered her the opportunity to travel across the globe residing in France, England, and Spain. Ms. Petrie spent her childhood in rural Scotland where she “was bitten by ticks many times.” She “had lots of health issues when [she] was younger,” but suffered severe symptoms including rashes, swollen glands, loss of voice, and “horrendous fatigue” after a tick bite at the age of 17. Her doctors diagnosed her with “ringworm” and “the kissing disease” and urged her not to “kiss too many boys.” Despite growing up in a tick endemic community and suffering from classic migrating Lyme disease symptoms, she was not accurately diagnosed until she was 50 years old. Doctors misdiagnosed Ms. Petrie with Endometriosis, Graves' disease, and arthritis. Finally, she hired a “private doctor in London” who sent her blood work to Armin Labs in Germany. Today, Ms. Petrie has become a Lyme education advocate because she believes that if she had “known about Lyme” and had received early “treatment” her “life would have been very very very different.” If you would like to learn more about how education can protect you and your family from Lyme disease, then tune in now! PS Children's Lyme author Alex Castellanos served as a special guest co-host with Rich for this interview.

My Dad, Iain Craigie was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia where his father had worked as an engineer. In 1939, aged one, the family moved back to their native Morayshire in north east Scotland. Their first home was a rented one bedroom cottage in Urquhart, near Elgin - by then there were five members of the family, my grandfather, Naylor, and grandmother, Susan (nee Junner). The cottage was on the flight path of German bombers flying back to base from London and Cambridge, so Iain and his brother, Grant and sister, Jean, were evacuated two miles down the road to live with Miss Jackson. She cared for them for three years, times were hard and she was typically versatile, digging up ‘tatties' from the farmer's fields and shooting deer to feed herself and the children.During the war Grandad, Naylor, was posted to Palestine, when he returned, he bought a beautiful family home in Kingston on Spey. The house is Morven on Lein Road. In this podcast Dad talks about his memories of early life in Morayshire. His schooling in Garmouth, Fochabers and then Marischal College in Aberdeen. It's a fascinating insight into early, post-war life in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
