Was the recent barnstorming London revival of the 1992 Gershwin Brothers show, Crazy For You, one of the best things to hit the West End in years? Thos certainly thinks so and in this week's episode you can hear him and Josh talking about what made it so delightful. Was it the phenomenal, vital writing of the George Gershwin? Was it the seamless dancing, singing and comic talents of Charlie Stemp? Was it the almost overwhelming sensory overload of music, dance and choreography in harmony? The simple answer is yes, and the more detailed answer is awaiting your eager ears in this swonderful episode! Listening to this converstation is nice work (and yes, you've got it!). You'd be k-ra-zy to miss it.
Vision Quest was released in theaters February 15, 1985. Based on a book that was hot in the young adult space, it featured a young Matthew Modine as Loudon Swain - a high school wrestler from Spokane, Washington who is looking to accomplish something big in his life. While the movie had limited appeal beyond teenagers (it only grossed $13 million), cable TV and video rental stores gave the movie continued life among teenagers for many years. A big reason it continued to draw 80s teens and carry such strong nostalgia today is the soundtrack. Put together by John Kalodner for Geffen Records, it featured some of the hottest pop and rock artists of the day and sold over 1 million copies in the US. Madonna, who was hot off her Like A Virgin Tour, contributes two songs - the unreleased as a single in the US Gambler and mega hit Crazy For You - and she had a cameo in the film singing them both. Journey offered Only The Young from the Frontiers sessions and the video, like Crazy For You, featured scenes from the film, helping the singles sell big numbers. Those two songs along with Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe set the tone for the film and make the songs and movie so intertwined. Some songs from bands like The Style Council, Don Henley and Dio might be overlooked as background music to certain scenes, songs like Change by John Waite (written by the legend Holly Knight) and Lunatic Fringe really keep you energized and engaged in Loudon's quest to drop 22 pounds and beat the unbeatable Shute on the wrestling mat. You have the tender Crazy For You for the romantic scenes, Journey for the training scenes and lots of rock and pop royalty. Even great songs by Berlin, Quarterflash and REO Speedwagon were left off the soundtrack but appear in the movie, including some solid work by Tangerine Dream. Maybe we like this film because as two former teenage boys, we could relate to what this guy was going through. But we continue to like the soundtrack because it had killer songs (with a couple of clunkers) that stand the test of time and play a huge role in the film. The podcast hosts react to the announcement that the 2025 musical is Crazy For You! This episode includes a short synopsis, a musical madlib, and reactions to the announcement.
Today's Guest is Meredith Patterson and she happens to be a very good friend of Scott's. They met another lifetime ago…waaaaaay back in December 1996 and got to perform together 8 shows a week on the US and Canadian tour of Singin' in the Rain. When the record button for this interview was pressed and when Meredith and Scott popped up on each others screens, they were so happy to see each other, they wound up talking and reminiscing for a while before they even talked about Meredith's career and the Disney stuff. Since they talked for so long about so many things, and since people have asked what doesn't make the Final Cut - what gets edited out of these interviews - what's going to happen is this - Part 1 is released today, Part 2 will come out next week, and the week after, a bonus episode of some of Meredith and Scott's personal conversation will come out, with Meredith's blessing. You'll hear these two friends laugh, reminisce about their time together, etc. On Broadway, Meredith is known for her incredible skills as a dancer both in balletic grace and tap dancing, and the New York Times compared her to the legendary Ginger Rogers. How's that for a compliment? She made her broadway debut in the Julie Taymor directed play The Green Bird. For those not familiar, Julie Taymor directed the Broadway musical, The Lion King. Meredith then lived the classic understudy's dream come true when she took over the starring role of Peggy Sawyer in the Tony Award Winning Revival of 42nd Street, where she made her Broadway musical debut. Meredith was also the first non-original principal to be recorded for posterity with the Lincoln Center Archives. When her Broadway contract was up, Meredith went on to star in the groundbreaking Moscow production of 42nd Street, where she was the first American actress to perform in an English-speaking production in Russia. Also on Broadway, she originated the role of Judy Haynes in Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Other theatre credits include A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden and The Boy Friend where she played the Julie Andrews role of Polly Browne under the direction of Julie Andrews. Her national tour credits include starring as Judy Haynes in White Christmas, Polly in Crazy For You, and Kathy Seldon in Singin' in the Rain. Her television career began with her hilarious role on Boston Legal in a 5 episode arch opposite Candace Bergen and Tom Selleck for Disney owned ABC. She also guest starred on Law & Order SVU opposite Marissa Hargitay, The Good Wife, and Made in Jersey. She played Francesca on All My Children and is featured as one of the last 3 girls for the role of Val in the critically acclaimed A Chorus Line documentary, Every Little Step. Meredith made her feature film debut as Marilyn Monroe in Paramount's Company Man. Some other film credits include Broken Flowers, where she played opposite Bill Murray and was Lady Alyssa in Disney's The Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement with Julie Andrews, Anne Hathaway, and Chris Pine. Meredith now lives in Montana with her husband and two children where she runs her own production company. She's written two books and she has her own podcast, all of which we'll be talking about...in Part 2 so stay tuned! This episode picks up at the end of Meredith and Scott reminiscing. Enjoy Part 1 of Scott's conversation with the lovely...the talented...Meredith Patterson! This collection features the biggest bangers currently making waves! We kick things off with the fabulous "Finally" by Swedish House Mafia and Alicia Keys. This dream collaboration reimagines the 2001 house classic by Kings of Tomorrow (a.k.a. Sandy Rivera) into a sweeping anthem, showcasing Ms. Keys's incredible vocals. I can't recall a more unexpected and mesmerizing pairing since David Guetta and Kelly Rowland electrified the dance floor with "When Love Takes Over" back in 2009. Next up is a brand-new track from Canada's pop princess turned urban queen, Nelly Furtado. After a seven-year hiatus, her collaboration with Tove Lo and SG Lewis delivers an electro banger that seamlessly bridges her earlier work with Timbaland. The singer is in fantastic vocal form and looks as fabulous as ever, while Don Diablo's searing progressive remix is sure to captivate club-goers. Italian DJ Piero Pirupa, who previously reworked the rock classic "Another Brick in the Wall," returns with a hard-hitting remix of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Grunge was always ripe for an EDM makeover, and this remix elevates the original to new heights. Jerome Robins & Karsten Sollors take on Rihanna's classic "Don't Stop the Music," transforming it into a BIG HOUSE tune that's bound to blow the roof off any venue. Their version does justice to the original while opting out of the MJ "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" chant—frankly, it didn't need it. Martin Ikin is riding high with his chopped tribute to Beyoncé's "Crazy For You," titled "Crazy 4 U." Paired with "7 Seconds" by James Hype, these tracks highlight the diversity of styles in this set. We also feature sweeping anthems like the elegant "Tears" by John Summit and Paige Cavell, alongside Max Styler's progressive track before closing out with his techno smash, "Addiction." In between all this goodness are some heart-tugging and emotionally uplifting songs you may or may not have heard yet. This shift in the set allows listeners to breathe before transitioning to a harder note. Tracks like "Beautiful & Young" (a Lana Del Rey remake) by Harpoon, "Hold Me" by Freejak, "Wish You Knew" by Carlita, and "My Love 2024" by Alex Wann, Route 94, and Jess Glynne all deserve attention. While some lean towards Afro house, others showcase a more progressive structure, but they all mesh beautifully. Finally, we have the latest from Chappell Roan. I debated including her new track "Hot To Go!" due to the controversy surrounding her recent comments.

On the 52nd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest Fozzy frontman and current AEW FTW Champion, Chris Jericho, review the 1985 soundtrack for the movie, "Vision Quest." Vision Quest is the story of high school senior wrestler who wants to lose weight and get into a lower weight class just to battle a seemingly impossible foe. The movie which starred Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino was not a box office success, but has since become an 80's cult hit. Vision Quest is the rare movie which has been helped by it movie soundtrack. The soundtrack is filled with many successful 80's artist, including two songs from Madonna who was skyrocketing into superstardom at the time. Most of the artists, with the exception of Madonna and The Style Council, were hard rock acts, like Foreignor, Dio, Sammy Hagar and Journey. Other artist involved were Don Henley, Red Rider and John Waite. The album went platinum in the United States and made it to #30 on the US Billboard 200. Tracks like Only The Young, Hot Blooded, Hungry For Heaven and Lunatic Fringe as still found on classic rock stations this day. But it was the two songs including, Crazy For You, by Madonna that made this soundtrack become of the best and most popular of the 1980's. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 50 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. Blanco Brown's viral hit “The Git Up” (certified 11x PLATINUM across three countries) took the world by storm, claiming the top spot in charts across the globe and spawning nearly 4 billion views across social platforms. It claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for 12 weeks and was the top-selling digital Country song in the US for 13 weeks, resulting in Billboard naming him as their Top New Country Artist for 2019. His multi-national Platinum-certified collaboration “Just the Way” with Parmalee has garnered more than 300 million on-demand streams, earning him his first No. 1 hit on Country radio (in the US and Canada). No stranger to collaborations, Blanco has worked alongside artists like Fergie, Childish Gambino, Kane Brown and Chris Brown – and he recently collaborated with Nelly and BRELAND for their funky fun “High Horse,” and “Never Gonna Tame You (Original Song from The Mustangs: America's Wild Horses),” written by Diane Warren. In September 2020, Brown was in a life-threatening accident and has been recovering, leaning on creating music to heal — the first taste of that is “Nobody's More Country,” available now. Raised on a farm in Lawrence, Kansas, Ashley Ray has established herself as one of Nashville's most nuanced voices, chasing down critical acclaim not only as a solo artist, but also as an in-demand songwriter for Little Big Town, Lori McKenna, Lady A's Charles Kelley, and others. Her unique approach to melody and storytelling has resulted in partnerships with publishing companies like SonyATV Tree and BMG Nashville. Meanwhile, her albums have earned her shows with Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and other country trailblazers who, like Ashley, create a modern sound without chasing after modern trends. Ashley Ray shines a light on her midwestern roots with her third album Pauline, whose autobiographical songs tell true stories of love, loss, and life in Middle America. Founded in Isla Vista, CA, Rebelution has followed their instincts since the release of their breakout 2007 debut, Courage To Grow. In 2009, the band topped the Billboard Reggae Chart for the first of what would be five consecutive #1 records; and in 2017, they garnered a GRAMMY nomination for Best Reggae Album. Rebelution's transcendent live performances, meanwhile, have earned the group sell-out headline shows everywhere from Red Rocks to The Greek Theatre along with festival slots at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, ACL, Glastonbury, and more. Their new album In The Moment is deliberate and wide-ranging, infusing the quartet's soulful, exhilarating brand of modern reggae with addictive pop hooks, alt-rock grit, and hip-hop grooves. The performances here are bold and self-assured, and the production is equally ambitious, drawing on swirling reverb and trippy delay to create an immersive sonic universe that's both futuristic and vintage. Yes… the iconic frontwoman for Sixpence None The Richer! For more than a quarter century, Leigh Nash's instantly recognizable voice has been a fixture in modern pop, from her days as frontwoman for Sixpence None The Richer to her more recent output as an Americana solo artist. Rooted in the southern sounds that previously underscored albums like 2015's The State I'm In (her first Top 40 hit on Billboard's country chart), The Tide, Vol. 1 finds Nash working alongside other mainstays of modern music. Featuring collaborations with country icons like Vince Gill and Tanya Tucker, gospel singer CeCe Winans, and the GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter Ruby Amafu, the EP features a range of duets that highlight the full span of Nash's artistic interests. The record also earned Leigh Nash her first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, marking another milestone for a lifelong musician who recorded platinum-certified hits like "Kiss Me" while in her early twenties. leighnash.netIG: @leighbirdnashSpotify: Leigh NashNEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheart Keep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.com The Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists Management Producer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: PactInstrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio
O.N.E The Duo is a mother/daughter duo — Tekitha (mother) and Prana Supreme (daughter) — and their story is rooted in Hip-Hop royalty. Tekitha is the female lead on the Wu-Tang Clan albums, and Prana is the daughter of RZA, the founder and de facto leader of Wu-Tang Clan. Together they are pioneers, becoming the first artists to journey from Hip-Hop to Country. From a backdrop of diverse experience, influence, and their immersive Nashville journey, O.N.E The Duo has created a musical style that's all their own. “O.N.E” stands for Observant, Noetic, and Effervescent — there's intentionally no period after the "E" because effervescence goes on and on... onetheduo.comIG: @onetheduoSpotify: O.N.E The DuoNEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheart Keep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.com The Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists Management Producer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: PactInstrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio

Tiki Taane is widely considered to be an influential element in the pioneering of New Zealand's bass culture, as well as the country's most prolific and talented "genre-bending experimentalist". Praised as much for his powerful, headlining live performances as he is for the anthems he writes and produces, his extraordinary ability to rock the mic as both a gifted performance MC and a solo acoustic performer is something to be experienced firsthand. https://tikidub.comIG: @tikitaaneSpotify: Tiki Taane NEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheartKeep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.comThe Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists ManagementProducer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: Gibson Brands Instrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio
