The acclaimed off-Broadway production of “Fiddler on the Roof”—in Yiddish, with English and Russian supertitles—opens in Canada this week, during Jewish Heritage Month. This is the stage musical's first international tour since its rousing success in New York under Oscar-winning actor and director Joel Grey. The dialogue showcases the original language in which Sholem Aleichem wrote his stories about the beloved fictional character Tevye the dairyman, whose family faces upheaval and antisemitic persecution in Czarist Russia in 1905. Toronto's Harold Green Jewish Theatre teamed up with the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene to bring the show to Canada, with Broadway star Steven Skybell as Tevye, and a supporting cast of major Canadian performers including Theresa Tova, Jamie Elman and Gabi Epstein. The promoters say this production resonates so deeply after Oct. 7. as questions of identity, migration, continuity and Jewish belonging feel newly urgent. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, reporter Jonathan Rothman joins host Ellin Bessner to discuss why he set out to learn more about this version of the iconic show, and they talk tradition, rehearsals and why attending a performance later today will mark the first time he has actually ever seen any version of Fiddler. (Note: The Harold Green Jewish Theatre is advertising the play on The CJN's website, but they were not involved in this story or our coverage of the play in any way.) Pastor Jake's sermon covering Acts 6–7 centers on the big idea that local faithfulness launches the gospel of forgiveness globally. He walks through the early church's organizational response to a widow-care problem, the false accusations leveled against Stephen, and Stephen's sweeping sermon before the Sanhedrin — a sermon that drew clear parallels between Moses and Jesus while declaring that God works outside of Israel and is not confined to the temple in Jerusalem. Stephen's faithfulness ultimately costs him his life, making him the first Christian martyr, but his death becomes the very spark that propels the gospel outward, fulfilling the promise of Acts 1:8 — "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" — as seen in Acts 8:1. The podcast discussion opens up several threads that didn't make it into the sermon. Pastor Jake unpacks the nature of forgiveness, emphasizing that it is not a matter of conjuring up good feelings but rather an act of the will empowered by the Holy Spirit — the emotions and freedom often follow the choice, not the other way around. He also highlights the powerful moment in Acts 7 where Stephen sees heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God — the only instance of that image in Scripture — suggesting that Stephen was catching a glimpse of his ultimate destination even as his life was on the line. Pastor Matt adds rich historical context, explaining that the widow problem in Acts 6 was not random but the surface-level eruption of four centuries of cultural tension between Hebraic Jews and Hellenistic Jews. He also draws a compelling through-line from Acts to church history and the present day, pointing out that persecution has never stopped the gospel — it has consistently refined and spread it, from the explosion of Christianity in China under Mao to the rapid growth of the church in Iran today. The conversation closes with a challenge for every believer to examine whether their faith depends on comfort or conviction, and to ask honestly: Where has God placed me, and am I on mission right there?

On Israel's 78th birthday, Israelis are marking that moment during a very different reality—two years after the October 7 attack, and in the wake of a ceasefire from a widening regional conflict that includes the U.S., Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon. In 1948, the founders declared Israel's independence with a manually typed paper invitation to a secret, hurried ceremony in a secure basement, with a sense of both triumph and fear. Modern Israel has a powerful army, but the country continues to sacrifice its young defenders, while Israelis have spent countless hours in recent months sheltering in their secure basements and safe rooms to hide from incoming enemy rockets and drones. This Yom ha-Atzmaut, our guests say the Jewish State is both an idea fulfilled, and a story that is still unfolding. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner brings you her interviews with two guests who embody the story of Israel: Hadassa Kingstone, 89, who was an eye witness to the birth of her country, and David Matlow, The CJN's “Treasure Trove” columnist. Follow David Matlow's “Treasure Trove” columns about the history of Israel through his vast collection of Zionist and Herzl memorabilia, in The CJN . Our readers share their own memories of Israel on her recent 75th birthday, in The CJN from 2023 . Hear Israeli American writer Yossi Klein Halevi, who lives part time in British Columbia, speak for Israel's 76th birthday on why Israelis are "still an enormously powerful people” after Oct. 7, on The CJN Daily . Hello to you listening in Seattle, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more to visit history) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Recently I read a comment on Substack about the changes being wrought by 47 and his criminal cabal to erase - as much as obscenely possible - evidence of slavery in America thereby making history disappear. Yes, many have tried to make history disappear but the stories, the oral histories, the voices, the art, books and photographs remain. Not all - but enough to stand witness. One such book, The Ghosts of Segregation, was authored by our very own Whidbey Island writer and photographer, Richard Frishman who saw what 45's administration was doing and had to do something to defy it. Unexpectedly, while researching the Ghosts of Segregation, I found my way to the Panama Hotel in Seattle which some of you may remember as the hotel featured in the novel, The Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford. The Panama Hotel remains the repository of personal belongings stored there by some of the 8,000 people of Japanese ancestry who were forced from Seattle and into internment camps (known as War Relocation Centers) set up in Midwestern states as a result of Executive Order 9066. They had one week's warning.Eventually, over 120,000 men, women and children of Japanese ancestry were forced from their homes, businesses and farms on the Pacific Coast in a systematic, government sponsored exile of innocent people. Most of them were United States citizens. The incarceration turned US citizens into refugees in their own country. But the story is still alive staving off erasure. A grant from the National Park Service helped researchers document, catalogue and map the contents of suitcases, trunks, and boxes, over 8500 items left in the hotel basement. Because of the historical value of the Panama Hotel, it was designated as a National Treasure in 2015. Today the Panama Hotel serves as a living time capsule, a shrine to a community, and the site of the Japanese American Museum of Seattle. Story Prompt: How might we change the future with understanding and compassion so as to defy fear and hatred of The Other? Write that story and tell it out loud!
