Together, they look at the origins of outdoor education and its transition from the periphery of the education world to its central role in our understanding of wellbeing and child development. With the PGA Tour event at Palm Beaches pushed to a Monday finish we throw the audience a bit of a curveball to start tonight's episode with a modified Pro Golf Fantasy Draft. We look at the rest of the contenders and the apparently softened course setup - plus Webb's interview and the notable sponsor's exemptions for this week's event at Bay Hill and the rumor mill surrounding Rory's LIV comments. Then it's on to LIV Jeddah for the return of Anthony Kim to pro golf (51:00), Talor Gooch popping off again and the PGL lawsuit against LIV. The idea that is currently splitting professional golf in half was born around 2010, scribbled in a feverish bout of inspiration on yellow legal pads. The author was Andy Gardiner, a corporate finance lawyer, and ideas weren't his only strong suit. Over the next decade and more, Gardiner used his connections high in the worlds of golf and business to forget a relentless and occasionally brilliant campaign to bring his idea to reality. It was called the Premier Golf League, and depending on who you believe, it may have come to the very precipice of success. In the end, even with big investors like the PIF, the PGA Tour outmaneuvered Gardiner and the PGL, and consolidated its power over the game. When the PIF came back with the full war chest at its disposal, it carried key components of Gardiner's idea, and even some of his top lieutenants, but not Gardiner himself. But when you tell the saga of LIV Golf and its war against the PGA Tour, Gardiner remains one of the most fascinating figures; one who got so close, and whose idea is even still rocking the sport. This is his story.

This is Dom Cooke and this week is a little different. It's Super Bowl week and to get in the mood, we're doing a sports special as we break down the business behind 3 iconic sports - The NFL, Formula 1, and the PGA Tour. Now, these are not new episodes. We have covered each of these sports over the past two years on Business Breakdowns. But for this episode, we have condensed those conversations into 100 minutes of action, focusing on the similarities and differences between these major leagues. In terms of revenue, the NFL dwarfs the other two sports. But in terms of eyeballs, Formula 1 is the clear global leader. And from a strategic perspective, it's fascinating to see the evolution since we aired these episodes. For example, you'll hear Formula 1's CEO talk about the US being a key growth market, and then you'll notice that last week Red Bull unveiled their 2023 car in New York. This year's calendar has 3 US races. Similarly, the upcoming weekend is the second in a series of PGA Tour events designed to bring more of the top golfers together on a regular basis. Neil explains why that was desperately needed in more detail towards the end of this episode. Finally, before we jump into the action. I wanted to highlight our newest Colossus show, Making Media. If you enjoy Business Breakdowns, I think you'll enjoy that show too. I think of it as a real-time Business Breakdown of our media business, Colossus, and the media industry writ large. Make sure to check it out if you like the sound of it. You'll find a link in the show notes. Now, without further ado - let's get to the Business of Sport, starting with the NFL. Today's guest is Andy Gardiner, the man behind the Premier Golf League, the self-styled Formula One for professional golf whose promising to generate $1.8billion of annual revenue and $10billon of equity value by 2031. This comes a week after our podcast with Sean Bratches from the rival disruptor league, Saudi backed LIV Golf. Since we spoke, Bratches has resigned. As you'll hear in our conversation, Gardiner is bullish on the PGL's chances of breaking the current stalemate with the PGA Tour, by offering a revenue share agreement to the players and demanding their representatives on the PGA Tour Policy Board publish an independent valuation on the PGL's projections .The stakes are very high and the proposal would change professional golf forever, something Gardiner refers to as a 'multi generational opportunity' for the game. The deadline for a decision is looming and the PGA Tour is countering with threats to the players livelihoods and attempts to undermine Gardiner's projected figures.Gardiner says: "When we started out, there was a genuine feeling amongst the best players in the world that they were over subsidizing the rest of the membership. And we heard that from sponsors and we heard it from broadcasters because they said, yes, we really only care about 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 guys. Those are the ones who move the needle. That's why we're paying the money we're paying".Today's episode is sponsored by our friends at Turnstile.Turnstile uses real market rates to quantify the value every single sponsorship right within a deal, looking beyond the traditional media metrics to calculate the value of the Exposure, Intellectual Property and Direct Benefits. This enables Turnstile to deliver a recommended transaction price that's comprehensive, accurate and defensible. So don't pay too much. We dive into a few of the other players' performances from this past weekend. Then there is more news out about the Saudi golf league and even the PGL. When the topic of the USGA potentially rolling back equipment gets brought up, things get very heated and contentious as our hosts don't exactly see eye-to-eye. After settling down, we make our picks for the Match Play and two hosts end the show with another debate. This time the topic was how good Justin Thomas is compared to others.

Andy and Brendan begin first with a solemn note on the horrific tragedy involving the University of the Southwest golf team. From there, they discuss the release of LIV's schedule and the stinky roster of courses. The PGL's re-emergence in the form of a report on a proposal sent to Rory McIlroy is also addressed, and they close with the distance issue and the signals this latest USGA and R&A update sent.
