"What seem to be vestiges of the Jim Crow world in a sense are just that. But passage of the old order's segregationist trappings throws into relief the deeper reality that what appeared and was experienced as racial hierarchy was also class hierarchy. Now blacks occupy positions in the socioeconomic order previously available only to whites, and whites occupy those previously identified with blacks. And the dynamics of superordination and subordination, patterns of appropriation and distribution, and dominant understandings of which material interests should drive policy remain much as they were. This underscores the point that the core of the Jim Crow order was a class system rooted in employment and production relations that were imposed, stabilized, regulated and naturalized through a regime of white supremacist law, practice, custom, rhetoric, and ideology. Defeating the white supremacist regime was a tremendous victory for social justice and egalitarian interests. At the same time, that victory left the undergirding class system untouched and in practical terms affirmed it. That is the source of that bizarre sensation I felt in the region a generation after the defeat of Jim Crow. The larger takeaway from this reality is that a simple racism/anti-racism framework isn't adequate for making sense of the segregation era, and it certainly isn't up to the task of interpreting what has succeeded it or challenging the forms of inequality and injustice that persist." ― Adolph L. Reed Jr., The South: Jim Crow and Its Afterlives "Walt Price: What does he like? Bill Smith: 14-year-old girls. Walt Price: Well, get him something else. We want to get out of this town alive. Get him half a 28-year-old girl." -David Mamet, State & Main

It’s not unusual to find fresh vegetables or handmade goods at farmers’ markets across Wisconsin. But at one small farm in Tomahawk, the sales approach is different. Tranquil Acres Farm invites visitors to pick what they need and pay what they can afford, no questions asked. Heather and Bill Smith are a retired couple who bought the property during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in search of solitude. What began as a quiet retreat quickly turned into something much bigger: a mission to make healthy food accessible to everyone. Heather Smith talked with WPR’s Shereen Siewert.

Savage Wonder hosts Saturday night absurdities The ploy each Saturday evening at Savage Wonder in Beacon is simple: Wind the eight actors up by handing them a script, let them rehearse for about five hours and turn them loose. The resulting staged-reading performances take place every Saturday night for a month at the Main Street venue, a former bank. "The last performance is the most polished, but the first one is the most fun," says Chris Meyer, its artistic director. On Saturday (Aug. 9) and each week through Aug. 30, the company will present The Actor's Nightmare, by Christopher Durang and directed by Meyer, along with six 10-minute comedies. Absurdist scenes include a corpse in conversation and a wedding catering menu that offers hand-clubbed baby seal, carpaccio of spotted owl and sashimi from the waters around Fukushima. As Savage Wonder builds out 139-141 Main St., the basement is the only area open to the public. Music and theater performances are held at The Parlor, accessible through the 4,000-square-foot art gallery Savage Wonderground. Formerly known as Vet/Rep (short for veterans repertory theater), Savage Wonder moved from Cornwall last year and plans to open two performance spaces and another bar/cafe upstairs. "We've never produced a show in August before," says Meyer. "We always went dark. This year we figured, let's see what Beacon brings." Next to the performance space is Grape Rebellion, a wine bar and eatery. Patrons can dine and drink while watching the performances. In The Actor's Nightmare, Cian Genaro portrays a befuddled accountant mistaken for an actor (who may also be a thespian having a bad day). He is thrust into a production that shifts from Beckett to Hamlet and A Man for All Seasons. Beheaded at the end, like Sir Thomas More, the actor/accountant lies motionless on the floor during the curtain call. A short, "The Big Dark," referencing hell, relates the fast-moving adventures of a mishmash of nymphs, satyrs and Greek gods as narrated by a hardboiled gumshoe (Dylan Crow). Kia Nicole Boyer laughed after gargling water to imitate a fountain. During a game of craps, a character rolled "Medusa eyes." In "Monkey Do," the protagonist's younger brother died from being strangled by a sock puppet - or an actual monkey; it's ambiguous. Ana Anderson and Leeanne Hutchison heightened the hilarity, reflecting Meyer's mantra to have fun, mix things up and "eat the dessert first," he says. The key to keeping a theater-like flow in the cozy Parlor space is the doorway to a utility room that fills in for backstage. Actors also enter and exit by walking through the house, which is filled with four couches, padded barstools and height-adjustable antique tables. Three rows of lighting gear affixed to the ceiling add ambience to the performances. During "Hamlet in Hiding," they simulate the police raid on a trio of bank robbers with Irish accents holed up in a theater. The room's mottled red, blue and yellow decor is adorned with portraits of Bob Ross, Shel Silverstein and Edgar Allan Poe. For readings this month, the action takes place along the far wall, but configurations are flexible, including in-the-round experiences where the stage stands mid-room, says Topher Kage, associate artistic director. When hosting improv or standup comedy shows, the small stage is placed against one of the side walls. There are 25 chairs, and "pretty much everyone has a first- or second-row seat," he says. Tickets are $25 at savagewonder.org. The play performed on Saturdays in September will be "The Elephant Delivery," by Bill Smith, along with six 10-minute comedies written by veterans. The Grape Rebellion is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Martin Cruz Smith (1942-2025, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studio December 9, 2004 while on tour for his novel “Wolves Eat Dogs.” The great noir and detective author Martin Cruz Smith died of Parkinsons Disease on July 11, 2025 at the age of 82. A journalist originally, and then a writer of paperback fiction under a variety of pseudonyms, he began writing under his own name and became known following the publication of a horror novel, Nightwing, in 1977. Though it wasn't until 1981 with the release of Gorky Park, a detective novel set in Soviet Russia and featuring investigator Arkady Renko, that he hit best-seller stardom. Over the next few years, he alternated non-series novels with entries in the Renko series, all to much acclaim. “Wolves Eat Dogs” is partially set in Ukraine, in and around Chernobyl. In the interview, Bill Smith discusses his own trip to Kyiv and Ukraine, and the politics of the early 2000s, which offers insight into what's happening in 2025. There are four Martin Cruz Smith interviews. The first two, both co-hosted with Richard A. Lupoff for Probabilities, were recorded in 1990 while on tour for Polar Star, the sequel to Gorky Park, and then again in 1996 for the award-winning stand-alone novel, Rose. These interviews have yet to be digitized. This is the third interview. The fourth, for his novel “Tatiana,” was recorded on December 9, 2013. At the time of his death, Martin Cruz Smith had written 15 early novels under a variety of pseudonyms, eleven novels in the Renko series, and seven stand alone novels. The final Renko novel, “Hotel Ukraine,” was published shortly before his death. This interview has never been posted, or aired, in its entirety. The post Martin Cruz Smith (1942-2025) Acclaimed Noir and Literary Novelist appeared first on KPFA.
Have you ever been reading scripture and wondered, “That seems weird,” or “I wonder what that means”? I know I have more than once stumbled over certain verses. Right after Jesus taught the crowd the parable of the sower, his disciples asked Him why he taught that way. In his response, Jesus says something that seems strange or, to some, even harsh. Jesus said that those who have more will be given, but to those who do not have, even that will be taken away. That verse has always bugged me, but not enough to really dig into it, until now. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing from you this Sunday as we ask God to reveal to us what this means for us. Dr. Bill Smith
Dr. Bill says, "Curiosity saved the cat. Yes, sometimes curiosity is beneficial, and sometimes not. This week, we see how curiosity led to disastrous results for some biblical figures and great blessings for others, such as Zacchaeus. As you continue in your faith, you'll find that developing a habit of curiosity in the things of the Lord will accelerate your growth.”Dr. Bill Smith

This week, we will see how Palm Sunday fits right in with the “Changed” series, as we will hear how the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem began a week that changed everything! While not everyone is a big fan of change, when we live our life in Christ, there will be times when he causes us to change or grow into the person He always designed us to be. We will touch on the importance of being in balance; the mind, emotions, body, and spirit all interact and work together better when in balance. Looking forward to your own triumph in every part of your life. Bill Smith

From the audio to the visual, we delve into the wondrous world of the album sleeve with Bill Smith, of Bill Smith Studios, responsible for some wonderful images in the 80s. 1. THE JAM (1977-1981) After getting his foot in the door at Polydor in the 70s, Bill has a breakthrough with The Jam. He is responsible for the artwork for all their albums up to and including Sound Affects as well as a number of single sleeves. More importantly, he has one shot at the iconic The Jam logo. RIP Rick. 2. THE CURE (1979-80)From mod to goth, Bill moves from the immediacy of The Jam to the more surreal, indie world of The Cure. Bill discusses working on their first three LP's. One a bit of an outlier in their back catalogue, the other more typical. But which household appliance WAS Robert Smith??3. GENESIS (1980-83) Another contrast, this time the prog-rockers entering their 80s pop period with some truly iconic sleeves for Duke, Abacab and Genesis. Fortuitious accidentslead to the iconic Abacab sleeve. AI won't/can't do that shit.Discussion moves onto discussing copyright and who owns the rights to artwork; the artist or the designer. Then talk on the general LP artwork package; sleeve, back sleeve, inner sleeve, disc labels, etc ending on why he didn't do the cover to Invisible Touch.4. THOMAS DOLBY (1981-82)A very special collaboration with former guest, Thomas Dolby, leads to uniquely brilliant artwork for The Golden Age of Wireless and related singles.5. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC (1983)Nowt more iconic in the UK than the Now series and Bill was there from Vol 1.billsmithstudios.com80sography@gmail.comTwitter @80sographyBlue Sky @80sographySend us a text

Much of North America was settled by trappers who explored and pioneered this great country. In many areas it is a forgotten or lost art. In others it is frowned upon by those who do not understand the importance of managing wildlife. Trapping is considered by most biologists, and wildlife managers as the best and most effective manner of removing excess populations of predators from the landscape. Today on Christian Outdoors, we interview a professional trapper from my home state of South Carolina. Bill Smith is owner and operator of Coastal Land and Wildlife Services in the low country of South Carolina and his profession is exactly what we described. Removing excess predators from the landscape. We discuss how he does this, with some trade secrets and some unique techniques he uses to catch coyotes and bobcats.
