In this episode, I chat with Fr. Daniel O'Mullane, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Boonton, NJ. During the coronavirus, Fr. Daniel decided to offer the Sacrament of Confession from a plastic shed in front of his church and the papers quickly took notice. For more on Fr. Daniel, visit his parish website.

Guests: Monsignor Joseph Ambrosio: Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newark, NJ & Vicar of the Archdiocese of Newark's Italian Apostolate (http://www.facebook.com/OLMCNEWARK) Eric Lavin: High School Italian Teacher and Authority on Italian/Catholic Traditions (http://www.facebook.com/eric.lavin18)
Josh Wells, recent convert, retired marine and past employee of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, joins the show to talk about conscience. How do we build a good conscience, what tears it down, and how do we examine it? Turns out, the Catholic faith has some good tools to help us out with this.
We have a special guest for episode 26 of the Brooklyn’s Own Podcast, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello joins us to talk about a Brooklyn tradition since 1903, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast in Williamsburg! You’ve probably seen the Festival of the Giglio on TV or in various documentaries, and Monsignor Jamie gives us an in depth look into how all these men carry the gigantic 5 story tower! We talk about Brooklyn traditions related to the Church, and of course we have to get in a couple of Cardinal Dolan stories! The Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast runs July 10th-21st at 275 North Eighth Street in Williamsburg. The 12-day Festival of the Giglio is produced to support Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, following a centuries-old tradition that continues to hold deep religious and cultural meaning for many Catholics who live in Brooklyn or are returning to ‘the old neighborhood.’ Monsignor Jamie comes from St. Bernard’s Parish in Bergen Beach, and once served at Bay Ridge’s St. Patrick’s Church as well as at Mary Queen of Heaven in Flatlands. He’s also a great chef! Check out his show “breaking bread” on NET TV! Verizon Fios channel 48 & Spectrum channel 97. Former City Councilor Phil Palmieri is not happy about news that Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church may be torn down. In fact, he doesn't buy claims that it is beyond repair, and he argues the city has not ordered it taken down. He joins Hank and Walter on Worcester this week, and pulls no punches. Give a listen, share and let us know who and what you'd like to hear on a future show. worcestermag.com/hank-walter-podcast
Members of the Brooklyn, New York, Mt. Carmel Club of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church dance the Giglio, carrying the structure, as well as the 12-piece band standing on it. The men who carry the structure are called the Paranza, or lifters; they are directed by the Capo, a position of great honor and tremendous responsibility. Under the direction of the Capo, the Paranza act as one to lift, carry, and dance the Giglio through the streets of Williamsburg. This 1956 amateur film footage was shot by Natale Bello. Each July in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, a seven-story, four-ton papier-mâché structure is carried through the streets by a group of over 100 men. This remarkable event is the Giglio, the Festival of San Paulinus di Nola, who is credited with offering himself into slavery to save the life of a child. In honor of San Paulinus, the Giglio has been “danced,” as they say, in Nola, Italy for over 1,500 years. Italian immigrants brought the tradition with them to the United States, where it is not only a religious festival, but also a grand celebration of Italian heritage.
