How We Seeez It! Episode 330, Wake Up Dead Man “You're right. It's storytelling. The rites and the rituals. Costumes, all of it. It's storytelling. I guess the question is, do these stories convince us of a lie? Or do they resonate with something deep inside us that's profoundly true, that we can't express any other way except storytelling?” — Father Jud Another Knives Out movie. Rian Johnson brings back Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc for another whodunit. Josh O'Connor is incredible as Father Jud, and Josh Brolin is great as Monsignor Wicks. What happens when a murder mystery becomes a theological reckoning? In Wake Up Dead Man, Rian Johnson delivers a Knives Out film that confronts Christian nationalism, toxic masculinity in the church, and the possibility of authentic faith beyond institutional corruption. Rev. Rachel Kessler, aka The Nerdy Priest, joins Matthew to unpack Father Jud's journey from failed boxer to priest, the film's sharp critique of religious authority, and why Benoit Blanc's turning down Jud's invitation to mass is essentially the message of the movie.Questions we discussed:How does the character of the Monsignor embody Christian nationalism and toxic masculinity within church leadership? What does Father Jud's struggle with his violent past reveal about redemption and the nature of calling? How does the film parallel Rian Johnson's themes from The Last Jedi about institutional failure and who gets to own sacred stories? How does the movie distinguish between authentic Christianity and the church as an instrument of patriarchal control? What's the significance of Benoit Blanc experiencing a "road to Damascus moment" but still declining to stay for Mass? Why does the film end with the church renamed "Our Lady of Perpetual Grace" while the pulpit—and its temptations—remains?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network.

In this episode, Monsignor Shea reflects on leadership as stewardship, emphasizing that true influence comes through love, attentiveness, and surrender rather than force. He shares how personal experiences—especially the death of his brother—shaped his understanding of servant leadership and deepened his reliance on the Holy Spirit. The conversation explores humility, the joy of watching others build on one's work, and the importance of holding leadership roles lightly. Monsignor Shea also notes a growing hunger among today's students for meaning and truth, which is reshaping the landscape of Catholic higher education. Monsignor Charles Pope delivers a sobering warning: hell is real, and ignoring its existence is harming the Church. Drawing from Scripture, tradition, and his new book The Hell There Is, Msgr. Pope explains how false mercy, presumption, and a trivialized view of God have emptied parishes and robbed souls of salvation. God respects human freedom—even when it leads to eternal separation from Him. Heaven and hell are real, with degrees of reward and punishment. Priests and bishops must recover the courage to preach the Four Last Things: death, judgment, heaven, and hell.
