The legend of Mo Church, a once grand building with a dark past, has terrified locals for generations. What started as a curiosity-driven adventure with friends led to an unforgettable encounter with the ghost of a woman who tragically ended her life at the church. But the haunting didn't stop there—it followed the storyteller back home to an old house with its own eerie history, where mysterious sounds, strange vibrations, and hidden relics hinted at something much darker. Award-winning British writer RJ Ellory tells us about his new novel, "The Bell Tower", which has been translated as "Everglades" in French, and why he chooses to set many of his storylines in the United States. We also discuss the golden age of cinema, the great "Noir" authors and talk about a philosophical question at the heart of his book, which deals with the use of the death penalty for convicted criminals.

"I very carefully listened to scores of recordings before settling on this one and it captured my imagination instantly. It's incredibly rich and mysterious. What was documented in this field recording transports us, I think, to a place both ancient and instantly present. We hear footfalls climbing rickety stairs. In the distance bells toll. And in the foreground a sonorous voice intones a repeated phrase, mysteriously. It was my clear favourite and I hope we've done it justice. "The recording is from Spain and although Sylvia has visited the country, I have not yet been there myself. We have friends who live in the ancient city of Tarifa and they have often spoken of the magic of this place - particularly the spectacular religious processions and other traditional sacred rituals. The field recording seems to conjure this for us, quite movingly so. I hope my composition and our recording underscores and enhances that sense of mystery, of faith, of ritual. "There is very little enhancement to this particular field recording aside from looping it and lightly adding reverb in places. We were committed to keeping it out front as the most present piece of sound throughout. Listening repeatedly, I began to compose, beginning with an underscoring on synth - a sine pad in a kind of four-voice drone. Using that as our basic track, I continued with further instrumentation: bass, a kind of twinkling, echoing guitar figure and two further tracks of a deep Moog synth played live through a Vox AC-30 amplifier and a large double-speaker cabinet, both parts rising and falling in swells. At that point I sent the track to Sylvia in France. It was the first time she had heard the field recording and, partly of Spanish extraction herself, she instantly recognized it as being from Spain. She added a whispered echo of that mysterious repeated phrase, just the word “siempre”. Sylvia and I continued by recording wordless vocals in four parts, like a distant choir. Finally, Summer's voice joins, rising above them. All of the instrumentation and vocals slowly fade up into the mix in support of the field recording itself, in what we hope illustrates this track's very title - the dream of the trusted watchman of this ancient bell tower. "There is, we hope, a decidedly spiritual component to our work. And this field recording certainly engaged that part of us. Bipolar Explorer is a project begun and now continued in dedication to our cofounder Summer Serafin who passed away age 31 after a tragic accident in 2011. We often say that our work is of, for and about Summer, which is to say that it finds its inspiration and narrative in dedication but also includes her. Our treasure trove of Summer's isolated vocals make it possible to fly her in as we build and compose new works. Indeed, you hear her on this very track. I think that great loss brings us to question what we believe - of our lives, of the world, of what may be beyond. It's a very personal journey but we're all of us on one and sometimes artistic expression can bring that to bear, bring the disparate together so we don't feel so alone. Perhaps (and I personally and fervently believe) there's more to our lives than we can know. Perhaps our lives are more than we can see. Perhaps time is not static. Perhaps in that sense we are forever. These sounds from Spain moved us yet again to compose a piece that we hope reflects that very thing: perhaps we are all forever. Perhaps we get a hint of that in dreams. Bipolar Explorer is Summer Serafin (vocals, spoken word), Michael Serafin-Wells (guitars, bass, sine pad, Moog synth, tape loops, vocals) and Sylvia Solanas (vocals, spoken word). In this episode, Kimberly and Tommaso recount their visit to Modena, Italy. They describe the city's attractions, from balsamic vinegar to Ferrari. They also discuss travel safety tips and the upcoming changes to the podcast schedule. Key Points: Podcast Schedule Update: Beginning the first Wednesday of April, the podcast will switch to two episodes per month for a few months. This change is due to scheduling constraints. Travel Safety Advice: Travelers to the Napoli area should be aware of recent earthquake activity. Visitors should note the location of their country's consulate. A grab-and-go bag with essential documents is recommended. Recent heavy rains caused flooding in Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and parts of Emilia-Romagna. Modena's Centro Storico: Kimberly and Tommaso visited Modena, known for its balsamic vinegar and Ferrari. Kimberly recalls fond memories of buying balsamic vinegar during her time in Milan. The city was decorated for Christmas, with a unique style of lighting the streets. The hosts admired the lack of crowds in Piazza Grande. Modena was originally a Roman colony called Mutina. UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Modena has three UNESCO-recognized architectural masterpieces. The Duomo is a Romanesque building that took 220 years to build. The Bell Tower of the Duomo is known as Ghirlandina. The Piazza Grande is the third UNESCO site. Famous Modenese Figures: Luciano Pavarotti, the famous tenor, was from Modena. His home slightly outside the city is now a museum. Chef Massimo Bottura, who runs Osteria Francescana, is also from Modena. Giuseppe Giusti Balsamic Vinegar: The Giusti family has been producing balsamic vinegar since 1605. The shop on Piazza Grande has a very alluring interior. Kimberly and Tommaso tasted and purchased various vinegars. They paired the vinegar with parmigiano and Brunello upon returning home. Ferrari Museum: The museum focuses on the life and work of Enzo Ferrari. The museum showcases noteworthy Ferrari automobiles. The design and color of the cars, as well as the devotion to each car, stood out. The exit features a quote from Enzo Ferrari: “The best Ferrari ever built, is the next one.” Follow us on Social Media Instagram Facebook

Beijing is a city with over 3,000 years of recorded history. Not only is this a city with a rich history, it has a rich culture, some of which is surrounded by folklore and the supernatural. There are several haunted locations in this capital city of China. Chaonei (Chow nay) No. 81 is found in the Dongcheng District and is a unique brick structure with an obscure history that seems to be mostly connected to the Catholic church. No one really knows why it is haunted, but it is said to be one of the most haunted locations in China. There is the Huguang Guild Hall, a haunted theater. A home for royalty, the Prince Gong's Mansion, has a couple ghosts stories. The Bell Tower may be connected to a young woman's ultimate sacrifice and now it occasionally rings out her haunting cry. And the Forbidden City itself has some creepy stories. Join us for the history and hauntings of Beijing, China. A centuries-old example of Chinese urban planning and architecture has received global recognition. The 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, India, announced on Saturday that the Beijing Central Axis — "A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital" — has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China's 59th World Heritage Site.7月27日,在印度首都新德里举行的联合国教科文组织第46届世界遗产大会上,我国申报的“北京中轴线——中国理想都城秩序的杰作”被正式列入《世界遗产名录》,截至目前,我国世界遗产数量达到59项。 The Central Axis in Beijing is an ensemble of palaces, public buildings and gardens that governs the overall layout of the old city area of the Chinese capital. Stretching 7.8 kilometers north to south through the heart of Beijing, the newly inscribed World Heritage Site comprises 15 components. At the northern end of the axis are the Bell Tower and Drum Tower. It then runs south through Wanning Bridge, Jingshan Hill, the Forbidden City, the Upright Gate, the Tian'anmen Gate, the Outer Jinshui Bridges, the Tian'anmen Square Complex, the Zhengyangmen Gate, the Southern Section Road Archaeological Sites, before terminating at the Yongdingmen Gate at the southern end. The Imperial Ancestral Temple, the Altar of Land and Grain, the Temple of Heaven, and the Altar of the God of Agriculture are located on the east and west sides of the Axis. The complex comprises imperial palaces and gardens, imperial sacrificial buildings, ancient city management facilities, national ceremonial and public buildings and remains of the original central axis roads. "It is an important symbol that embodies prominent characteristics of Chinese civilization, highlighting Beijing's exceptional status among the famous ancient capitals of the world," Li Qun, director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, said in an interview with China Global Television Network on Saturday in New Delhi. "It has had a profound impact on the history of urban planning and construction worldwide and serves as a Chinese case for the preservation and sustainable protection of ancient capitals," Li added.7月27日,国家文物局局长李群在新德里接受中国国际电视台采访时说:“这是一个重要的象征,体现了中华文明的突出特征,突显了北京在世界著名古都中的特殊地位。北京中轴线对世界城市规划和建设产生了深远的影响,是中国保护古都的典范。” Construction of the Central Axis began in the 13th century and was completed in the 16th century. It has undergone constant refinement over the past centuries and continues to influence Beijing's urban development to this day. The World Heritage Committee acknowledged that the Central Axis in Beijing meets the World Heritage List selectioncriteria No 3 and No 4: It bears unique or exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization that is living or has disappeared, and is an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape that illustrates significant stage or stages in human history. Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO's assistant director-general for culture, speaking at a celebratory event in New Delhi later on Saturday, said that Beijing's intricate urban planning draws inspiration from Confucian philosophy with a history spanning thousands of years and which flourishes even today. The preservation and design of urban heritage are not only about protecting the past but also about constructing a better future, he added.7月27日晚,联合国教科文组织文化助理总干事埃内斯托·奥托内(Ernesto Ottone)在新德里发表讲话时说,北京错综复杂的城市规划从数千年的儒家哲学中汲取灵感。 According to the National Cultural Heritage Administration, the Central Axis in Beijing provides exceptional material testimony to the philosophy of "neutrality and harmony" prized in Chinese tradition. It is an outstanding example representing the mature stage of the urban central axis of Chinese capitals, and also the best-preserved capital central axis in China. " (The Beijing Central Axis) is the product of some of the best urban planning in history," said Christa Reicher, a professor at RWTH Aachen University in Germany and a UNESCO chair for cultural heritage and urbanism, in an interview with Xinhua. "It is regarded as the 'spine of the city's culture' and a magnet for tourists from all over the world." Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, said that this paradigm of city planning can be traced back to Kaogongji (Book of Diverse Crafts), a section of the Confucian classic Rites of Zhou that was compiled more than 2,000 years ago. The milestone work outlines the rituals and order in the planning of a capital city. The Forbidden City and the markets at the Bell Tower and Drum Tower area correspond to the book's account of "court in the front, market in the back". The tome speaks of "an ancestral temple on the left, an altar of land and grain on the right", which is reproduced in the Imperial Ancestral Temple and the Altar of Land and Grain, located symmetrically on the east and west sides of the Central Axis. "It is a carrier of traditional Chinese concepts and beliefs, constructing a symbol for national order and witnessing the formation of the Chinese cultural tradition of inclusion and diversity," Lyu said. Between 2020 and 2023, an action plan for comprehensive protection of the axis was put into practice. Various efforts including renovation of historical buildings, related archaeological research, improvement of the environment, and activities to encourage wide participation of the public in this process followed. "Through this process, the historical pattern and historical charm of the Central Axis in Beijing are gradually being restored and vividly reproduced, with continuous improvement in the living environment and urban landscape along the axis," said Chu Jianhao, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Office for Conservation and Management of Beijing Central Axis. "The inscription marks a new starting point. China will adhere to the World Heritage Convention, and continue making efforts to protect and restore heritage buildings, mitigate the impact of natural disasters, encourage public participation, strategically guide tourism development, and improve the capabilities of property interpretation and presentation," Li from the National Cultural Heritage Administration vowed at the session in New Delhi on Saturday. China will continue to coordinate the management and protection of World Heritage Sites, strengthen exchange and cooperation with international organizations and other signatory countries… and contribute to promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning and building a community with a shared future for mankind," he added. Various activities to celebrate the inscription of the Central Axis on the UNESCO World Heritage List were held across Beijing over the weekend.7月27日至28日,北京各区举行了多项活动,庆祝北京中轴线被列入联合国教科文组织世界遗产名录。UNESCOn.

“What is it like, such intensity of pain?” writes Rainer Maria Rilke. While we might ask one another in our more difficult moments “How are you?” or perhaps “How are you doing?”, we less often ask Rilke's deeper question, a question that helps us and one another make contact with the aliveness and mystery of our being human. And so in this week's conversation we explore together what it is to treat our own experience of ‘the happenings of life' with reverence and respect, and start to see how this reverence and respect can help us inhabit the coming and going of all kinds of experience as a vibrant and necessary kind of gift for ourselves and for those around us. Here's our source for this week: LET THIS DARKNESS BE A BELL TOWER Quiet friend who has come so far, feel how your breathing makes more space around you. Let this darkness be a bell tower and you the bell. As you ring, what batters you becomes your strength. Move back and forth into the change. What is it like, such intensity of pain? If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine. In this uncontainable night, be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses, the meaning discovered there. And if the world has ceased to hear you, say to the silent earth: I flow. To the rushing water, speak: I am. Rainer Maria Rilke Photo credit / Arturo Rey on Unsplash

Wandering Works for Us PodcastDate: 22 November 2023Title: Our Favourite Places in FlorenceSummary of EpisodeSorry it took so long to get this episode out, but we had A LOT to talk about. In this episode, we give you our first hand account of Florence, Italy. Back in early October, we met up with some of our friends from the US and toured Florence for 5 days. We visited the Uffizi, ate great food, saw the David and the Duomo and the Santa Croce Basilica, and drank all the wine. We loved most of it, like some of it, and discovered that Florence is an amazing Renaissance city.Key TopicsThis episode is longer than our usual ones, but we had so much to talk about![01:00] Reasons for moving to Portugal and traveling within the EU [08:45] the Uffizi Museum[15:45] Michelangelo's David and the Accademia[19:45] Piazza della Signoria[21:00] Piazza del Michelangelo and the other side of the Arno River[23:40] Ponte Vecchio Bridge[25:22] Duomo, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Baptistry [30:45] Santa Croce Basilica[35:00] The wine and the food![43:50] Chianti/Tuscany Wine Tour** CORRECTION: We said that Napoleon's Daughters were buried in the Santa Croce. They are not–it is his niece and sister-in-law.Important Links All of the places that we mention are linked in our blogs! Cozy autumn vibes and rain sounds help you fall asleep in tonight's rainy bedtime story. Immerse yourself in ASMR storytelling by a female voice with "Stormy Night at the Bell Tower." Nestled in a historic mountainside village in New England, the bell tower is a unique dwelling converted into a charming apartment. There is no other place in the world like it. Returning to the bell tower as the first raindrops begin to fall, a cozy dwelling unfolds its magic—stained glass windows, a crackling woodstove, and candles dancing with the storm outside. As the village loses power, smoke gently trails from chimneys, casting a nostalgic scene that mirrors life centuries ago for just one magical night. Curled up with a book and your cat, flickering candlelight casts the Bell Tower in a warm glow until you are ready to surrender to sleep. It's time to dream away. Mike Church's talk at the 2023 Midwest Catholic Land Movement on the Incredible Catholic Church Bell, it's history and how it comes to bleed and hanged in the Bell Tower and telling of the story of The Poor Man And The Bell; an excerpt. There was once a poor workingman whose devotion to Mass was so great that he endeavored to hear it every day. One morning he had risen early and gone to the market-place to look out, with some other men, for employment, when he heard the bell of a neighboring church for Mass. He directly left the other men and took himself to the church, where he heard Mass very attentively, and implored God to give him that day his daily bread. But on returning to the market-place he found all the other men had got work, and although he waited for some time, no one would give him a job. Presently he went back to his home with a heavy heart, for he could not help regretting that he had lost a day's work through going to Mass. Read the rest in Father Martin Cochim's book The Incredible Catholic Mass available here.
