This week, host Margaret Walls investigates the world of weather forecasting with Jeffrey Shrader, an associate professor at Columbia University whose recent research examines inequalities in forecast accuracy among countries across the globe. While the accuracy of weather forecasts has improved steadily over the past few decades, low-income countries experience notably less reliability in their local and regional weather predictions. What does it mean to talk about “patriarchy” in the present? What are the origins of the term, its uses, and its limits? How has it impacted popular discourse, and why does it seem to have gone out of fashion in the academy? And in what ways might the term – and the concept – still hold untapped power? To tackle all these questions and more, Abby and Patrick welcome philosopher Robin Dembroff, author of the brilliant new book, Real Men on Top: How Patriarchy Shapes our Reality. Weaving together intellectual history and social commentary, Robin clarifies the origins of patriarchy as a keystone concept in twentieth century feminism, and traces its trajectories, for better and for worse, across the academy and beyond. Offering a new model for thinking about patriarchy in dynamic and structural terms, Robin suggests that we can think of patriarchy as a kind of grammar, a system for ordering social life, for processing individual experiences, and for reproducing logics of exploitation, dominance, and lack. Are there places in our lives where we have quietly settled for something less than the freedom and fruitfulness Jesus paid for? In this message, Debbie takes us into John 15 and Jesus' picture of the vine, the branches and the Father as the gardener. Through the agricultural language of grafting and pruning, she explores what it means to be joined to Christ as a new creation, and then to remain in Him as the Father continues the work of cutting away what needs to die and cleansing what He wants to make even more fruitful. Some things in us simply need to be put to death. But there are also good things — gifts, callings, passions and desires that genuinely came from God — that can become entangled with wounds, unhealthy motives and old ways of protecting ourselves. A desire for excellence can become driven by performance. A genuine love for people can become tangled with a need for acceptance. The answer is not to destroy the gift, but to allow the Father to lovingly prune and cleanse it so that what He originally placed within us can bear the fruit it was designed to produce. Debbie also explores Jesus' repeated command to remain or abide in Him. The Greek word meno describes something active — an ongoing movement of the heart towards relationship and intimacy with God. Abiding isn't striving, but neither is it passive. It is a continuing choice to stay connected to Him, listen to Him, and yield to what He wants to reveal and transform. This message carries a challenge for those places where we may have stopped believing change is possible. The recurring struggles, wounds or patterns we've put into the “too hard basket” can quietly become mountains of impossibility within us. Previous breakthrough doesn't mean the journey is finished, and what God dealt with last year isn't necessarily all He wants to do this year. The invitation is to refuse to settle. To remain in Him, yield again to the Father's pruning, and allow the blood of Jesus to cleanse everything that has become entangled with what He originally created as good. The Father's pruning is not about diminishing us. It is about making us fruitful.

We all have an impossibility in our lives. Circumstances we can't fix, people we can't change, and problems beyond our ability to solve. But God wants to use those impossible moments to teach us to trust Him, depend on Him, and see His faithfulness in ways we never could on our own.

Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: February, 2021Weird Darkness takes listeners inside the federal penitentiary on Alcatraz Island — what daily life was actually like behind its walls, the fourteen escape attempts that mostly ended in the San Francisco Bay, and a tour of American prisons whose conditions make the Rock look mild by comparison.It opens with the texture of everyday survival at Alcatraz, where the prison held roughly 330 men in cells measuring five feet by nine, and where food, clothing, shelter, and medical care were the only four rights an inmate had — everything else, from library access to a spot in the prison band, had to be earned. Warden James A. Johnston enforced a code of silence that lasted until 1937, so inmates like Jim Quillen talked through the pipes between cells, and Quillen described nineteen days in solitary as total silence and darkness. Al Capone begged his way into the Rock Islanders band and learned tenor guitar, tenor banjo, and mandola; Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz, spent eleven of his seventeen years there in the hospital, studying law and languages. Prisoners were counted thirteen times a day, allowed a single two-page letter each week to a blood relative, and served food widely regarded as the best in the federal system — and still, by inmate Bryan Conway's account, fourteen of three hundred seventeen men went violently insane during his last year, one dock worker chopping off the fingers of his own left hand with an ax.From there, the episode turns to the men who tried to leave. Joseph "Dutch" Bowers became the first, shot off a fence on April 27th, 1936, while working the incinerator detail. Theodore Cole and Ralph Roe sawed through a window in the Model Industries Building and vanished into a storm-driven current in December 1937, their bodies never found. The 1938 breakout by James Limerick, Jimmy Lucas, and Rufus "Whitey" Franklin killed guard Royal C. Cline with a hammer; Arthur "Doc" Barker, son of Ma Barker, was shot in the head near the shoreline in January 1939. The May 1946 "Battle of Alcatraz" pulled in the Coast Guard and the Marines over two days and left guards William Miller and Harold Stites dead. And the most famous attempt of all came in June 1962, when Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin chipped through their cell walls with spoons, left dummy heads made of soap and hair in their beds, and disappeared on a raft stitched from raincoats — three men the FBI never found.The episode closes by leaving Alcatraz behind for prisons still standing. ADX Florence in Colorado, the "Alcatraz of the Rockies," holds inmates like Ted Kaczynski and Ramzi Yousef in seventy-five-square-foot concrete cells for twenty-three hours a day. At the Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas, an inmate named Andre Thomas removed his own eye. Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Maricopa County Tent City Jail in Phoenix housed people outdoors in the Arizona heat until it was dismantled in 2017. Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans has stood on the same ground for three hundred years, first used to hold enslaved people who tried to escape. San Quentin, built in 1852 and once home to Charles Manson and Richard Ramirez, drew a court-appointed report describing a facility so old, dirty, and overcrowded that housing people there was called dangerous.

We know that our thoughts are creative, but do we allow Spirit to do the work in creating our most amazing life, or do we get involved with ideas of lack, limitation, IMpossibility, and “yes, but…”

This passage from John 12 captures the profound irony and divine purpose behind Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where crowds hailed Him as King with palm branches and cries of 'Hosanna,' unaware that their celebration fulfilled Old Testament prophecies pointing to His rejection and crucifixion.
