Back at it! We had to figure out what epsiode this was because of a couple of "questionable" episodes. Anthony turned 25 and Joe's grandson turned 2, which wandered us over into Nick the Balloonatic and the potential for him to make balloons at Anthony's father's 60th birthday. We discuss Radio.com becoming Audacy. Loyal fan Dmitry sent in a comment that got Anthony going off on Richie Aprile of the Sopranos! That led us into Richie's first movie wich Anthony & Louie never heard of, which brought us to hot boxes, old video tapes and strange video stores on 18th avenue! Thanks for listening! We got a special edition of the podcast for you today! Intern Anthony is on vacation, lounging in the Florida sun, but Joe Causi had the chance to chat with an up and coming superstar, comedian Eric D'Alessandro of Staten Island! They literally ran into each other at a local Shop Rite last week, and here they are chatting on the podcast days later! If you are not familiar with Eric, his video “Mask Off Remix (Walmart Diss)” has gone viral, gaining over 16 million views across all his platforms! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciYFgVpya5k&feature=emb_logo Due to the success of this video, Forbes featured Eric in an article about his comedy and ability to connect with fans online as well as on stage! Eric talked to Joe about growing up on the island and how he developed his comedy. "I didn't grow up as a typical Staten Islander" he says, "i lived in the Westerleigh section of the Island which was more diverse, my mom, dad and sister didn't act like everyone else." When it comes to his comedy, Eric says it's all organic. "My friends growing up were funnier than me" he says. "I took my daily observations and turned them into something relatable and funny!" Joe has high praise for Eric, who was taken aback when Joe compared him to the great Robin Wiliiams! Eric is playing 5 in-person shows this weekend! Check him out at the Avenel Performing Arts Center in New Jersey, two Shows each on Friday, March 5th and Saturday March 6th at 7 & 9:30pm and Sunday March 7th at 7pm! Somehow Joe brings the conversation to Don Ho and Wayne Newton, and Anthony's never heard of either. When he googles a picture of Wayne, chaos ensues! Episode 47 is a combination of our Christmas podcast and our year end spectacular! Anthony bought a very expensive bottle of Tesla Tequila, while Joe got another video game system! We talk about Christmas, what we are doing this year and how it may be a little different, the Dyker Heights Christmas lights, Dominick the Donkey being voted the most hated Christmas song, and of course we can't let the season go by without our annual airing of the classic "Christmas in Joe Causi's Basement!" The spoken word poem anyone from the neighborhood can relate to! We end with a message from the famous Santa Causi! Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! We will see you in 2021 with all new episodes of the Brooklyn's Own Podcast! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 46 was a meandering conversation of whatever was on our minds! We talked about everything from the Verrazano Bridge bouncing in the wind, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting, Joe Causi playing video games in his basement, our favorite Christmas movies, the soft pretzel lady at the Staten Island Shop Rite, Joe's connections with Christmas lights and Playstation 5's, his appearance in the Italian Tribune Newspaper and so much more! What are some old school sayings you still use that sound a little dated? We go down our list! We talk Thanksgiving planning (are you limiting the number of people at your house this year?) and we find out Joe hates hoarding plastic tupperware! Joe's going for the "southern Italian" look with a stubbly beard, and it sparked memories of his 70's "Swedish erotica" look! We don't have any sponsors, so we show you what a live read would sound like if, say, a company like Homegoods wanted to jump on! We talk about the late great Jackie Gleason and so much more! Happy Columbus Day! We may not have a parade this year, but Joe Causi was kind enough to share his special family recipe for Columbus Day Stew! He also shared the REAL history of Columbus Day, Brooklyn style! Enjoy this isolated highlight from episode 44! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 44 starts off a little somber. Louie Louie's dog Morganna passed away and he's having a tough time. But the mood lightens when we talk about Halloween and that 12 foot skeleton Home Depot is selling out of! Joe admits he is a closet PSL addict (pumpkin spice latte) but he won't utter the term when ordering through his app in line at the Starbucks drive-thru. Joe says he will make pumpkin ravioli from scratch this weekend, and Anthony is disgusted. Joe whips out his elementary school recorder and plays us a song! We talk about missing Columbus Day and something Joe makes, Columbus Day stew? Never heard of it! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to episode 43! Anthony loves Joe's basement, Joe says it’s a conversation starter! He's got cool photos with Joe Torre, James Gandolfini & Michelle Visage…and it turns out Joe knows everyone! Anthony’s big celebrity encounter was with Miley Cyrus. Joe & Anthony want to meet Taylor Swift, Joe says “She’s a regular person!” Anthony asks Joe who the nastiest star he’s ever met, but Joe won’t rat anyone out! He said there’s one woman star that he won’t name. Joe pokes fun at Anthony, saying he will definitely be in line to by the Gucci overalls that are covered in grass stains! What’s the dumbest thing you ever spent money on? Anthony paid off his old lease just to get out of the contract, of course it was a Mercedes and he was only 17 years old. Speaking of cars, Joe had a Lincoln Town car when he was cruising down 86th street back in the day. Anthony thinks Joe needs a street named after him in Brooklyn! Now on to Carol Baskin on Dancing With The Stars, Anthony thinks she murdered her husband & Joe doesn’t want to jump to conclusions. Joe says there’s no more stars on DWTS! Joe reveals he competed in the Staten Island edition of Dancing With The Stars! Joe piques Anthony’s interest by telling him there’s new WWE-themed wine with The Undertaker, and they talk about our boss Jim Ryan and his very high standards. Joe & Ant talk about their favorite wines. Joe talks fancy stuff and Anthony likes the Moscato from Costco! Now on to Burrata talk! Anthony went 90 days without it, Joe tried Mexican Burrata and loved it but he won’t give the restaurant a shoutout because they don’t "do the right thing!" Joe is considering buying a Tesla, but he’s “got a guy” at the gas station so he doesn’t want to give up that perk! Anthony’s watching a ton of TV lately, he’s really into Chicago fire and Joe is really into Love it or List it! He’s also watching a BBQ cookoff show on Netflix. Anthony won’t let Joe go on his admission that he watches Love it or List it, as he grabs his rocky road ice cream and binges! He also watches a couple of pool shows. Anthony tells Joe to Google Kim Kardashian..... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Brooklyn's Own Podcast is celebrating it's 2 year anniversary! Thank you to everyone who's been with us since day one and all our new listeners! In episode 42, Anthony tells us about his Lasik eye surgery, we talk about the doctor who crashed into a cop car because he was busy on his phone in his self driving Tesla. We talk about Joe's fishing story, which leads us to revisiting episode 11 of the podcast when Joe declares himself a pirate! Joe texts Louie photos but not Anthony, which causes Anthony to push Joe to give details about his daughter's engagement and this causes some uncomfortable tension! We touch on the 18th Avenue & San Gennaro feasts being cancelled, outdoor dining returning in New Jersey, our classic episode 16 podcast with Steve Schirippa, remote learning & more! Make sure you follow & like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/brooklynsownpodcast/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/podcastbrooklyn) for updates and fun extras! We start out episode 41 with outdoor restaurants. Anthony went to Bay Ridge with his dad and couldn’t believe how crowded the restaurants were. Joe & Anthony go at it about shopping, Joe says Anthony’s girlfriend must be going crazy because she can’t go on a shopping spree, while Anthony accuses Joe of spending too much time at Homegoods with his wife. Anthony is not taking any vacation this year because he has nowhere to go, he’s having a hard time trusting any hotels & airlines right now because of the pandemic. Joe gives suggestions on staycations that make no sense to Anthony. When told Walmart has cancelled black Friday, Joe tells a story about a “thing” he has where he can’t touch anything used. He won’t read a newspaper if someone already read it and he can’t buy something like a TV if it’s not sealed in the box or has been touched by anyone else! He won’t take an open box TV for 70% off because it was touched! Joe makes a surprising joke about Louie’s wife’s walk-in closet & urges Anthony to “get out there” and do more handywork. He feels it’s his job to “school” him in the right direction. Episode 39 of the Brooklyn's Own Podcast is almost 4 months in the making. Our last episode was published February 19th and since then our lives have drastically changed. Joe lost his nephew, famed sports photographer Anthony J, Causi to the coronavirus in April. Intern Anthony was infected by COVID-19 & quarantined for 21 days, Louie was quarantined for 16 days.... We'll talk about what's happened in our lives and in the world since our last podcast, how we are coping and we will look toward the future. We are still in separate locations so episode 39 comes to you via Zoom. Thanks for coming back, we missed talking to you! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 38 of the Brooklyn’s Own Podcast starts off with the plastic bag ban ready to go into effect March 1st in New York, and the chaos & confusion it’s causing. Somehow Joe thinks climate change activist Greta Thunberg is responsible for the plastic bag ban…..which she clearly is not! Anthony says he doesn’t know who Tony Bennett is, then says he remembers him from almost falling off the Sesame Street float during the Thanksgiving Day Parade, this obviously causes outrage in the room. Joe asks Anthony about his Valentine’s weekend and things get too personal, Anthony reminds Joe that his girlfriend’s mother Olympia listens to the podcast, Joe says Olympia…like Olympia Dukakis, and Anthony says he has no clue who that is, never heard of her! After some talk about toll beating, Joe asks Anthony when he’s going to propose, and then plans out his bachelor party which for some reason needs to include “fire trucks and German shepherds.” The podcast comes to an end when Louie’s dogs start barking so loud we couldn’t continue, not the first time it's happened...
The sun is out and everyone's in a good mood for episode 37! We try to understand why Parasite won the best picture Oscar! The Irishman got snubbed, and we wish Joe Pesci won an Oscar so we could see Marisa Tomei star in 'My Cousin Vinny 2.' Mass hysteria over the Coronavirus has us doing strange things like Anthony throwing out his Chinese food when he sees the news. We imagine a disaster scenario with our Italian food being infected and how we would have to evacuate Staten Island. Anthony & Louie say the award shows are not important anymore, Joe goes nuts when Anthony says he never heard of Harvey Keitel. We remember how sad Marley & Me is. Joe asks Anthony 5 times if he's seen "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." When asked about Eminem's performance at the Oscars, Joe tells us a great story about the time he was a rapper, back in his 92.3 days he did the rap on a commercial with the Sugar Hill Gang, and nobody expected him to be so good! Joe spent a night hanging out with the President of Sicily, Anthony one ups that encounter by talking about him & his dad paying $500 to meet the Undertaker.
Episode 36! Right off the bat, problems...Louie's dogs are barking again, and Joe decides to take a bite out of one of their treats! Anthony recaps his California vacation, we debate the best pizza in the tri-state area, WCBS-FM listeners are voting for their favorite for national pizza week, so we shared a bunch of their picks (was yours one of them?)... Joe tells us about the beginning of his career when working in Minnesota as a displaced young man from Brooklyn. Joe is jealous of Louie for getting a colonoscopy, telling everyone about how "fun" it is...Anthony & Louie remember Father Joseph Gancilla who recently passed away and was a Brooklyn fixture. Big reveal at the end...we will record our next episode at Roll N Roaster! Wanna join us? Make sure you follow/like us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/brooklynsownpodcast/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/podcastbrooklyn) for updates!
Episode 35 of the Brooklyn's Own Podcast is a strange one, and not just because it was recorded at producer Louie's house...in Staten Island...Get ready for dogs barking, complaining wives, an attempt to recap the year that was, haircuts and an intense debate over Fresh Mozzarella. Joe & Anthony argue over their iPhone lock screen photos, they analyze Louie's house and he talks about life on Staten Island, Anthony adjusts to getting radio appearances and having a successful morning show. Joe hasn’t seen the Dyker Heights Christmas lights yet this year and rips Anthony for where he gets his hair cut. An intense debate breaks out about Lioni’s fresh mozzarella, Anthony says some blasphemous things and it gets ugly.
Episode 34 is all about Christmas, we’re talking about the Dyker Heights Christmas lights and Tony Muia, native Brooklynite and owner & operator from A Slice of Brooklyn Bus Tours joins us to talk about his operation and why it’s the best way to see the Christmas lights! Tony tells us great stories about Lucy and the world-famous display she’s responsible for on 84th street, the heart of the Dyker light display. We also touch on the Brooklyn locations used in “The Irishman” and Anthony confronts Tony about something he supposedly did when visiting Ravioli Fair back in the day! It's a bonus episode.....kinda. Joe Causi showed up 5 hours early to work to record episode 32 of the podcast, problem is he mixed up his weeks and found himself all alone, no Intern Anthony or Louie Louie! Lucky for us, Joe cracked the mic and gave us a few minutes of what's on his mind. This should hold you over until episode 33, an in-depth interview with a cast member of the Sopranos who will be at 'Sopranos Con' in late November!
Episode #31 is our Halloween special! Joe can’t be with his grandson for his first Halloween, intern Anthony hates candy, prefers cold antipasto! Joe reminisces about cheap, old school Halloween costumes…and his dog Leo is dressing up as the Pope! How much is too much when decorating your house? We meander into Christmas for a second, talking about that depressing song Christmas Shoes! Louie needs trick or treating advice from Joe since he’s new to the neighborhood. Joe busts on Anthony, saying he must have worn funny costumes back when he went to Xaverian. Joe reveals he can’t skate and he forgot how to skip, Anthony tries to teach him and blows out his mic. Podcast. Over.
We’re back at it for episode 30 after a little break, Joe reveals he used to work at a funeral home before he became a radio DJ, intern Anthony passed on the Columbus Day parade to take his girlfriend pumpkin picking. Things get ugly when Anthony says he is trading in his Mercedes for a Tesla, and Joe’s got a lot to say about it. Anthony proclaims he has no bills to pay other than the car payment, not even insurance, and all hell breaks loose! “I wanna see you in 5 years when Dolores gets pregnant running around charging your car watching teenage mutant ninja turtles on your screen.” Anthony declares he will not stay in Staten Island when he moves out of his parent’s house.
"She will be controlling your life in the next 3 years" Joe Causi proclaims to Intern Anthony as tensions build over Anthony's girlfriend Stefanie (or is it Sabrina? or Daphne? we may never know). Joe wants Anthony to "man up" when it comes to his relationship, and Anthony is finally fighting back after 28 episodes of verbal abuse! We also talk about our plans for the 2019 feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy and we talk about those cheesy old public access quality commercials! Remember Fiberama? How about the old Roll n Roaster commercial? We delve into the corniness of them all that we remember from Brooklyn and Staten Island cable TV. And who are "Johnny & Jimmy??" Find out in episode 29 of the Brooklyn's Own podcast....

Of course, as it always does on the podcast, Chinese roast pork comes up and we are going to set up a debate as to whether this dish should be served at diners! We debate other restaurant food as well, do you eat pasta at an Italian restaurant, is it a good indicator of the quality of the other food? This leads us back to the other longstanding big debate on the podcast...is it sauce or gravy? Joe continues to keep us guessing with his personal life, and admits he wants to join the free masons! In the spirit of Valentine's Day, we present to you a Brooklyn's Own Podcast origin story! Find out how the men of the Brooklyn's Own Podcast, Joe Causi & Intern Anthony, wine & dine their significant others & how they met the loves of their lives (spoiler alert, these are NOT the tearjerker romantic novel love stories you might expect!). How does a young guy from Brooklyn find a keeper? Sometimes you have to go "across the sea" or wait for her to sober up to find love......
Our first guest on the Brooklyn’s Own Podcast and it’s a big one, we got Bobby Bacala himself the great Steve Schirripa in studio for an extensive talk about his career! Of course we had to go deep into the Sopranos, looking back at the best moments, his character’s evolution and even if Bobby predicted the series finale’s final scene! While looking for work after the Sopranos, Steve feared being typecast as an Italian wise guy. He says people would ask him to “Say ‘fugettaboutit’” and he’d respond, “I don’t say that, I’ve never said that in my life!” Our wide-ranging talk goes into growing up on the tough streets of Bensonhurst back in the day. When it comes to the changes Brooklyn has gone through over the years, Steve says “Things went bad in the '70s, it was like the Warriors (movie)!” but “I like what they’ve done to Brooklyn, if you’re a kid in your 20s or 30s it’s a cool place to be.” We get into Steve’s first big break when he moved to Las Vegas and some of his proudest (and luckiest) moments like getting Brian Wilson to do a reunion show with the Beach Boys! We talked about his early roles as he reveals, Steve’s appreciation for Clint Eastwood & a big name actor that he’s not too fond of…“He’s not a nice guy, I don’t think he’s a good guy…I’ve been in his company, not happy, I have a hard time watching him….especially his new stuff, it’s garbage…” who is it??? Schirripa even enjoyed intern Anthony’s voice impressions! Steve is one of the actors from the Sopranos that has kept his career steamrolling since she show’s end, and he talks about how he planned out how he was going to stay relevant and employed long-term. Enjoy this extended talk with one of the greats!
We tried our best to do a 2018 year-end recap but it just didn't work out! We started out ok but the conversation somehow drifted to Joe Causi's rule about tipping everyone with cookies! He spent 15 minutes on this, on a year end review...but that's why we love him! Thanks to everyone who's been listening to the podcast since we started it in August, we really appreicate the love...be sure to tell your friends & family about us because 2019 is going to be lots of fun!
