On this edition of Parallax Views, William Hogeland of Hogeland's Bad History on Substack (and author of such rip-snorting histories as The Autumn of the Black Snake and The Whiskey Rebellion) joins me to discuss the Supreme Court draft opinion that seeks to overturn the Roe Vs. Wade decision on abortion. Hogeland wrote about this matter in a Substack entry entitled "'Deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition' The Bad History in Alito's Draft Overturning Roe v. Wade". What does the leaked draft say about the trends we're headed towards and what to make of the argument made in the draft and what is driving it? Hogeland argues that the draft has national-mythopoetic language in it that animates nationalist sentiments seeking to overturn progressive gains in the past half century. In the second segment of the show, Sanna'a, Yemen-based journalist Nasser Arraybyee joins us to discuss the ceasefire between Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia in the 7-year long Yemen war that's turned into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The ceasefire has been in effect since Ramadan and is, according to Nasser, optimistically looking like it will hold. Nasser explains why this ceasefire is different; Saudi Arabia's changing relationships with Iran, Turkey, and Qatar; the United Arab Emirates; the role of al Qaeda and ISIS in Yemen; the effect of Saudi-led blockades on the Yemeni population; and much more. In the third and final segment of today's program, Yumna Patel, Palestine New Director for Mondoweiss, joins me to discuss her new documentary Inside Israeli Apartheid. Yumna discusses the unequal treatment of Palestinians in both the Occupied Territories AND within Israel proper as well as some of the specific issues covered in her hard-hitting documentary that follows on the heels of human rights organizations like B'Tselem, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International discussing the question of apartheid in relation to Israel. Scott talks to Nasser Arrabyee about Yemen, where despite the Biden administration's assurances almost six months ago that the U.S. would be ending its support for "offensive operations," the Saudi coalition continues to terrorize the Yemeni civilian population, with crucial American support. The biggest problem facing Yemenis right now, of course, is the Saudi blockade on the Hodedah port, which prevents food and other basic supplies from making it into the country. Until the blockade is lifted, Yemen will remain what according to the UN is the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Nasser Arrabyee is a Yemeni journalist based in Sana'a, Yemen. Nasser Arrabyee comes on the show for an update about Yemen. There seems to be some promise of a real peace negotiation, Arrabyee says, though it's hard to get both sides to see eye to eye on the realities of the situation. The Houthis, as Arrabyee explains, feel they can negotiate from a place of strength, since they have controlled most of the country for the last few years. They are demanding that Saudi Arabia lift the blockade as a condition of sitting down to peace talks. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, has tried to make demands of their own, since they are on the side of the nominal government and are allied with the U.S. Arrabyee and Scott agree that one of the key factors in pushing a peaceful end to this war across the finish line is American peace activists putting pressure on their politicians, such that Saudi Arabia no longer has strong U.S. support, and must end its unjust persecution of the Yemenis. Nasser Arrabyee discusses the heavy fighting going on outside of Ma’rib, the last stronghold of the Saudi-backed government in Yemen. The Houthi “rebels” are closing in on the city, says Arrabyee, and may capture it within a few days—doing so could give them the bargaining chip they need to finally negotiate an end to Saudi aggression against their country and their people. Arrabyee hails the recent announcement of an end to American support for Saudi “offensive operations” as very good news, but insists that the suffering will not end until the Saudi blockade is abolished. Most of the deaths in Yemen have not been due to direct fighting, but instead to starvation and easily-preventable illnesses like cholera. Hundreds of thousands of civilians, at least, have died from these factors—many of them children—and hundreds of thousands more are at risk for as long as the blockade continues. Supporters of the war, including Mohammed bin Salman in Saudi Arabia and Mike Pompeo in the U.S., are pushing for the international community to officially designate the Houthis as a terrorist group, which Arrabyee says would only make it even more difficult to get humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people. Yemen has now been identified as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis for the third year running, and yet the mainstream media devotes almost no coverage to the situation. Scott talks to Dave Smith about the upcoming election and the role of the Libertarian Party in presidential politics. Both agree that the right move for the Party, given that it has essentially no chance of winning the presidency in the near future, is simply to spread the message of liberty to as many people as possible, just as Ron Paul did during his campaigns. Instead, the LP seems more focused on saying the politically correct thing, not offending too many people and accepting a few percentage points at the ballot box. This strategy is sure fail in waking people up to the radical message of libertarianism that our country so desperately needs. Peter Van Buren discusses yet another development in the “Russiagate” story, one that he says exposes the whole thing for what it really is. He describes the way “media watchdog” groups will discover small, insignificant websites, come up with an excuse for why they seem to be connected to Russia and then get large platforms like Facebook and Twitter to ban those sites in the name of truth and accuracy. Then mainstream publications like the New York Times will run stories about the bans, and Democrats who want to keep the narrative alive can point to the mainstream media coverage as evidence that Russia is in fact interfering in America’s elections. Van Buren says that all of this nonsense simply reveals how out of touch the party and media elites are these days, since they think stories like this will greatly move regular people. Nassar Arrabyee discusses the war in Yemen, where the Trump administration is now approaching four years of continued support for Saudi Arabia in their war of genocide against the Yemeni population. The UN estimates that close to a quarter of a million civilians have died there since Obama helped start this war, and Arrabyee says that with all the excess deaths from malnutrition and deprivation, there is good reason to believe that that number is much higher. Scott reminds us that the war in Yemen differs from other modern wars in the Middle East in that in most of America’s wars, civilians are just tragic collateral damage—in Yemen, on the other hand, deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure has been the strategy all along. Despite the looming threat of coronavirus, as well as another outbreak of cholera with the rainy season around the corner, both of which threaten to make what is already the world’s worst humanitarian crisis even more of a disaster, the western media seem to be completely uninterested in covering what’s going on there. The humanitarian situation there is still desperate, with the UN finally updating its estimates to over 200,000 dead—many of these women and young children. But Arrabyee sees reasons for hope. For one thing, the war is very unpopular, both among Americans and for Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, so neither country looks very good for their participation. Arrabyee says that airports may also start to be opened to humanitarian aid soon, helping to alleviate the thousands of deaths from deprivation and preventable disease.
