In this episode, Alex dives into the unraveling ceasefire between the US, Iran, Israel, and Hezbollah as fresh airstrikes and mounting civilian casualties push the Middle East closer to a wider regional war. From American “self-defense strikes” near the Strait of Hormuz to Israel's escalating campaign in Lebanon, Alex breaks down the political maneuvering, the human cost, and the fragile diplomacy struggling to hold everything together. Plus: why oil markets, global politics, and one of the world's most volatile regions are now more connected than ever.
Stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 was the hardest day by far. Ciccone was in the break again, but it was always going to be a tough ask today. Visma rode at the front of the peloton for pretty much the whole stage, and during the final climb, it played out exactly how everyone expected. Campenaerts, Kuss and Piganzoli each took turns to close the gap on the break before Vingegaard let rip and proved everyone right. Gall rode his own race at his own pace. Eulálio lost pink, but not by as much as the mountain profile threatened. And Piganzoli? What a ride. Ned Boulting and Jacopo Guarnieri report from the finish line with all the reaction and analysis. Life often blindsides us with unexpected suffering, but the story of Job offers profound wisdom for navigating devastating seasons. Job was a righteous man who lost everything in a single day - his wealth, servants, and all ten children - yet chose to worship God rather than curse Him. His response teaches us that righteousness doesn't exempt us from pain, but it provides strength to endure with faith intact. The Oklahoma City bombing memorial provides a powerful framework for understanding suffering through three stages: 9:01 represents life before tragedy strikes, 9:02 is the moment of impact that must be walked through rather than avoided, and 9:03 represents moving forward into healing while carrying the memory. The key is choosing healing over numbing by allowing genuine grief while maintaining trust in God's goodness.
What if the very thing that broke your heart… became the place where God revealed your calling? In this powerful and deeply moving conversation, Drs. Zach and Tim Clinton sit down with rising Christian music artist, Anne Wilson, to talk about faith, grief, identity, and purpose. Anne’s journey began in the midst of unimaginable loss. After the unexpected death of her brother in 2017, she found herself navigating deep sorrow, but also encountering God in a profound way. What started as a way to process her pain through worship became a calling that has now impacted millions around the world. From her breakout song My Jesus to her latest music and tours, Anne has continued to point people to hope in Christ, even in life’s darkest moments. In this conversation, Anne opens up about what it looked like to worship through grief, how her faith was tested and strengthened in the valley, and how she has stayed grounded in her identity despite rapid success and growing influence. We also dive into the challenges of comparison and identity in today’s culture, the importance of discerning God’s voice in the midst of opportunity, and what it means to be a light for Christ in both faith-based and secular spaces. Anne’s story is a powerful reminder that God often does His deepest work in our hardest seasons, and that He can turn our pain into purpose for His glory. If you’re walking through loss, wrestling with your identity, or wondering how God might use your story, this episode will meet you right where you are. Jack is joined by Big Jon Bass from The Big Jon Bass Show to celebrate a genuine rarity this year: Tottenham Hotspur actually winning a football match. The pair dissect the massive, much-needed victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure our first Premier League win of 2026. We discuss why, despite West Ham's gutting late winner against Everton keeping Spurs firmly in the relegation mire, this result genuinely feels like the squad is finally turning a crucial psychological corner under Roberto De Zerbi. However, in true Tottenham fashion, the joy is incredibly short-lived as we react to the absolutely devastating news that Xavi Simons has suffered an ACL injury. We discuss the brutal reality of the Dutchman missing the World Cup and potentially facing a season in the Championship, before questioning just how Spurs will cope without the main catalyst for our recent upturn in form. The injury woes continue as we examine Dominic Solanke's latest muscular setback, despite De Zerbi's reassurances. Jack asks Jon if our desperation for positives has led us to clutch at straws with the striker, debating whether he is ultimately a prime example of the unimaginative, unambitious transfer culture that dragged the club into this mess in the first place. Finally, we pull back to look at the terrifying bigger picture of the relegation scrap. We ask Jon for his honest feelings on the drop from this point in the season, exploring whether Tottenham's lucrative non-matchday stadium events genuinely provide a financial safety net, or if the sheer terror of losing the Premier League broadcasting revenue makes the prospect of the Championship an apocalyptic scenario for the club's future. Sally Hayden reports on her visit to south Lebanon, where weeks of war between Israel and the Iran-linked paramilitary organisation Hizbullah have left a trail of destruction. Thousands were killed or injured in strikes. Buildings and entire villages have been left in ruins and an exclusion zone established by the Israeli military has left up to one million people permanently displaced, many of them now homeless. Meanwhile a week-old ceasefire has been extended for another three weeks, with further meetings due to be held between Israel and Lebanon in Washington. But can the ceasefire hold? The Lebanese government is in a precarious position as it seeks to rein in Hizbullah without being seen to take too weak a line with Israel - who increasing numbers of Lebanese citizens hold responsible for the scale of the destruction. *Listen to the Show notes and podcast transcript with this multi-language player. Summary This conversation centers on breaking spiritual bonds—especially preconceived ideas, doctrines, and attachments—to truly know God. The speakers emphasize that bonds, even those formed around God Himself, can become limitations or idols. Through testing, repentance, and even devastation, believers are refined into a deeper, more authentic relationship with God. True knowing of God comes not through comfort or fixed beliefs, but through surrender, transformation, and continual turning toward Him. Show Notes 1. The Nature of Bonds Human nature seeks attachment—to people, doctrines, and systemsThese bonds can become spiritual limitationsEven religious structures (denominations, worship styles) can restrict knowing God 2. Bonds Can Become Idols Anything we cling to for identity or security can replace GodA fixed concept of God can actually block deeper revelationTrue relationship requires freedom from these attachments 3. Breaking Bonds to Find God We must let go of ourideaof God to truly know HimQuestioning our foundation is necessary—not rejecting God, but refining understandingFear of losing what we “know” about God reveals hidden bondage 4. Testing Our Relationship with God Are we willing to have our beliefs shaken?Resistance to change or correction reveals spiritual bondageA real relationship with God can withstand testing 5. Devastation as a Path to Revelation God often uses hardship more than blessing to reveal HimselfDevastation strips away false foundationsThrough this process, we see God's love more clearly 6. Repentance and Turning to God Repentance is not just sorrow—it's turning fully to GodGod becomes the answer—not circumstances or emotionsHis reassurance builds trust: “I'm still here” 7. Becoming God's Workmanship God forms His nature within us through repeated dealingsHis love and heart are woven into us over timeThis process creates a deep determination to walk with Him 8. Walking Through Failure and Restoration Failure is part of the journeyGod remains present through mistakes and confusionLike Peter, restoration comes through love and renewed calling Key Quotes “Bonds are death… you don't bond—you become alive in Him.”“The problem with bonds is that they become an idol.”“You have to break bonds with God in order to find God.”“Are you afraid of losing your security… can you let the Lord shake it?”“Through devastation, we come to know God in a greater way.”“Let God be your answer—not circumstances.”“I'm still here… you're just not where you should be.”“Out of devastation, we'll find God.”“Are you going to make mistakes? Absolutely… but God's with you through it.” Scriptural References Exodus 20 (3–5)Idolatry and placing anything before GodIsaiah 55 (8–9)God's ways higher than our understandingHebrews 12 (6–11)God disciplines those He lovesJames 1 (2–4)Trials produce maturityRomans 12 (2)Transformation through renewed thinkingJohn 21 (15–17)Jesus restoring Peter (“Do you love Me?”)Proverbs 3 (11–12)The Lord corrects those He lovesPhilippians 3 (8–10)Letting go of all to know Christ Takeaway To truly know God, you must be willing to let go of everything you think you know about Him. Bonds—whether to doctrine, experience, or identity—can quietly replace relationship. God uses testing, shaking, and even devastation to strip away what is false so that what is real can emerge. In that process, you discover that He has never left—and that kwnoing Him is a continual, living journey, not a fixed conclusion.

When observing comic books, the miracles come in big or small ways. This week on the podcast, we're discussing a resurrection we previously thought unimaginable. Stephen R Bissette, who gained legendary status working on titles like Saga of the Swamp Thing, crafted his masterpiece in the mid-nineties. Tyrant was meant to run fifty issues or more, but only four saw print before disaster struck the industry, and Bissette pulled up stakes, leaving comics to focus on family and a more financially stable situation. We've spent years searching for Tyrant in the dollar bins, picking up an issue here and there. As much as we love Bissette's work on Swamp Thing, Tyrant represents the artist at his purest, most thematically forward. Even at four issues, Tyrant is a masterpiece, expressing the agony and beauty of life, as we follow a Tyrannosaurus Rex from conception to birth. It's easy to mourn the story we did not get, but we must also celebrate the story we did. It is enough, and thankfully, we're not the only ones who thought so. Chris Stevens, of the newly formed Lighthouse Press, convinced Bissette that now was the time to re-release Tyrant in both a Complete Edition and a Deluxe Artist Edition. Stevens also hired cartoonist Jim Rugg (who recently shot a Stacks video with us) to oversee the production of these new additions. Together, they'll hopefully bring a massive new readership to Tyrant and give this lost masterpiece the recognition it never got. We're extremely happy to have Stephen R Bissette, Jim Rugg, and Chris Stevens on the podcast this week. Together, we place Tyrant in the context of its creation and explore why now is the time for its resurrection. We discuss the themes Bissette excavates in Tyrant and where the story was going before he had to pull the plug. We also discuss the heartbreak of pulling the plug and all the humanity within and without its pages. The 90s comic book scene. You had to be there. The Image Revolution. Pouches. Rob Liefeld and Spike Lee making Levi's commercials together. The Death of Superman was going to pay Brad's way into college somehow. The distribution implosion. The speculator flight. Devastation. Apocalypse. Something our earthbound dinosaurs also understood quite well. Please recognize the miracle that is Tyrant's resurrection by visiting the Lighthouse Press Kickstarter page and signing up for notification of its official launch. Why does God allow suffering to get worse even when you're already doing everything right? In Job chapters 1–3, the loss piles up fast for Job. Then Satan unleashes physical suffering so severe that Job's own friends don't recognize him when they arrive, and they sit in stunned silence for seven days. Job's wife, broken by her own grief, urges him to curse God and die. And in chapter 3, the man who worshipped through catastrophe opens his mouth and wishes he had never been born. What you'll learn:Suffering's two sides: How suffering can be both the absence of every good thing and the presence of every bad thing.Satan's strategy: Why Satan escalates from attacking Job's possessions to attacking his body, and what the phrase "skin for skin" actually means.Job's wife: Why her shocking outburst isn't villainous. It's deeply human, and the Accuser knows exactly how to use it.What real comfort looks like: What Job's three friends do right before they do everything wrong, and what it teaches us about showing up for suffering people.Job's darkest words: Why Job cursing the day of his birth isn't a loss of faith, and what it reveals about honest grief before God.Discussion Questions: Reflecting on Job 1-3Job worshipped God in the middle of devastating loss. When suffering hits, what is your first instinct, and what would it look like to respond like Job?Job's wife told him to "curse God and die" out of her own grief and exhaustion. Have you ever received advice from someone who loved you but unintentionally led you away from God rather than toward Him?Job's friends sat in silence for seven days, just present with him in his pain. Who in your life right now needs you to simply sit with them rather than offer answers? When suffering occurs, the lesson from Job is not to ask "How do I get out of this?" but "What can I get out of this?" What is a current trial in your life where God might be asking you to shift that question? This podcast episode is part of our ongoing Bible Book Club series, Season 18: The Book of Job.We love feedback, but can't reply without your email address. Tragedy can hit without warning, shattering the life you thought you had and leaving you questioning everything. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar sit down with Granger and Amber Smith to unpack how the sudden loss of their son, River, became a catalyst for a deeper faith and a radical encounter with God. The guys explore Granger's journey from the moment he almost took his life to the point he encountered Christ through the preaching of John Piper, and how that pivot transformed his heart. Amber shares her parallel journey, describing the nights of raw grief and relentless prayer that brought her face-to-face with God, showing listeners that hope can exist even in the most unthinkable loss. The guys discuss the Smiths' books, especially Amber's, which reads like a friend walking alongside the reader through suffering. Granger and Amber reflect on how their grief prompted them to confront real sin, misunderstandings about God, and the false peace offered by the world. The guys highlight how lament is a biblical response to pain, showing listeners that crying out to God brings healing. They stress that grief and repentance are not signs of weak faith but pathways to deeper intimacy with God. Through their story, the guys underscore the need for the church to preach sin, righteousness, and judgment, helping believers suffer well and experience true revival of the heart. The conversation turns to hope for those struggling with suicidal thoughts or despair. Granger shares his experience and the importance of understanding God rightly, emphasizing that suicide is rooted in self-centeredness while the gospel redirects us toward others and toward Christ. The guys talk through the power of honest fellowship and prayer to release the hold of despair, illustrating that God's presence transforms suffering into purpose. Amber and Granger describe how the Lord allowed them to walk through grief and find the ability to comfort others, highlighting the gospel as a living hope even in loss. Finally, the guys reflect on practical ways the Smiths have integrated grief and faith into daily life. They talk about walking their remaining children through sorrow, showing the power of modeling faith over minimizing pain, and pointing to Jesus rather than focusing solely on the loss. Granger and Amber explain how their marriage grew stronger, their ministry deepened, and their desire to see others meet God intensified. The guys leave listeners with the reminder that even in unimaginable trials, God is present and the gospel provides the ultimate hope and healing for every loss.Send a textThanks for listening! *Listen to the Show notes and podcast transcript with this multi-language player. Summary This conversation explores God's work in forming not isolated individuals, but a corporate people—a family and a royal priesthood. Through devastation, humility, and submission, God is bringing forth a purified company that exists not for personal gain, recognition, or ministry ambition, but to minister to the Lord Himself. The family emphasize that devastation is not meaningless suffering but a divine process that strips away self-interest and prepares God's people to walk as sons, worshipers, and priests. This priesthood is not defined by position or title, but by a spiritual state of being—one that fulfills God's eternal purpose revealed from the foundation of the world. Show Notes God is shifting from individual ministry emphasis to acorporate, family expressionTeaching and ministry flow through thebody, not a single voiceEach believer carries a different aspect of what the Spirit is speakingDevastation humbles the heart and removes pride and self-ambitionGod is raising acompany, not elevating personalitiesWorship is offering ourselves fully to God as living sacrificesPriesthood is aspiritual state, not an individual roleThe motivation of walking with God changes from “what I get” to “what God gets”God is forming a people for His own possessionSons of God walk in the earth as Christ walkedTrue priesthood is formed through submission, not recognitionGod is the potter; we are the clay Key Quotes “The teaching priest is coming through the family, through the body—not one person.”“There is a greater purity in the company God is raising up rather than individuals.”“Devastation is a prelude to the priesthood.”“The motivation of walking with God changes when it's no longer about us.”“God is creating a people for His own possession.”“

In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Jaser Abu Mousa, a 2025 Yale Peace Fellow and past Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza. The two discuss life and death in Gaza on personal and collective levels. They look at Hamas, which Jaser calls a "symptom" of the problem of occupation; at how the past two-plus years of war have destroyed not only all the infrastructure needed for life in Gaza but also the social fabric, as starvation and deprivation have broken human bonds and relationships; and the ways in which Israel works to make Gaza unlivable. On a personal level, Jaser speaks of his experiences in Gaza, from the violence he witnessed as a child during the second Intifada to the devastation he experienced on and since October 7, 2023: his wife, Heba, and two of his children were killed by Israeli missiles in mid-October 2023; after two years of starvation and deprivation, his mother, sister, and sister's children were killed in the war in July 2025; and his family suffered other losses, including the killing of a nephew in the beginning of the war, injuring of his father, and arrest, detention, and violence against his brother along with other medical workers. Navigating these unfathomable losses, Jaser points to his faith in God and religion as guides as he seeks to protect his living children and look towards the future. Finally, Jaser reflects on how he relates to Israelis and declares that "if I strip him from his right to tell his story, that does not make me more just, but will make me less human.” Jaser Abu Mousa is a Yale Peace Fellow examining how Gaza's postwar reconstruction can reflect Palestinians' priorities while repairing the social fabric of society. Most recently, he was a Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza, Palestine until the breakout of the current war in October 2023. During the war, Jaser lost his wife, Heba, and two children, Hmaid (18) and Abdulrahman (8), and left Gaza with his remaining two children, Abdallah and Sham, for treatment in the United Arab Emirates. Prior to his work with Swiss, Jaser served in the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), working under immense pressure during the 2014 war to report incidents, coordinated and communicate movements and follow intense political developments. Prior to that, Jaser worked as a social worker for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the aftermath of the 2009 war, including leading a team of 50 social workers to run the poverty survey for UNRWA in the area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. He also led a team of engineers to verify the work of a European contribution 30 million Euros known as the Private Sector Reconstruction in Gaza (PSRG). Between 2006-2009, he worked extensively as a political researcher in a Gaza-based think tank; during this period he reported on and analyzed Hamas' rise to power in the Strip. Jaser holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza and a Master of Science degree in Project Management. In addition to his work as an analyst and a development/humanitarian practitioner, he has worked as a civil engineer at private construction companies and UN agencies. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. His newest book (published 2025) is Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning. Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.

THE DEVASTATION OF BLOODY WEEK AND MORISOT'S RESOLVE Colleague Sebastian Smee. In May 1871, French government forces retook Paris during "Bloody Week," a period of atrocity where summary executions were rampant and the streets "ran red with blood." In response, Communards burned major landmarks, including the Tuileries Palace and the Hôtel de Ville. Manet, though absent during the final violence, created a lithograph depicting the execution of Communards as an indictment of the government's brutality. Berthe Morisot witnessed the destruction firsthand; rather than deterring her, the trauma of the "Terrible Year" strengthened her resolve to become a professional artist, a radical decision for a woman of her class. While many were executed or exiled to New Caledonia, Morisotchanneled the instability of the era into her work, emerging from Manet's shadow to become a distinct and innovative painter in her own right.
