The US Surgeon General recently released an advisory on how social media helps and hurts youth mental health. There are positive impacts but social media can also increase depression and anxiety. On the next Line One, host Prentiss Pemberton talks with Jennifer Gessert, a therapist specializing technology addiction. They'll discuss how social media impacts kids and teens and how to establish healthy boundaries around platforms. That's Line One, Wednesday, at 10 a.m., repeating at 8 p.m. on FM 91.1, or at Alaskapublic.org.
From the climate movement's earliest days, young people have been at the forefront of activism. But the first major international climate conferences took place 30 years ago. The first cohort of youth activists are now adults, some with children of their own. The emotional cost of seeing so little payoff for years spent fighting can be agonizing at any age, but perhaps more so for young people who put so much of themselves into the effort. Many youth activists burned out along the way, frustrated by participating in actions that rarely led to meaningful and lasting change. How do former youth activists now view the work of their younger selves? And what advice do they have for the next generation? Guests: Alec Loorz, Writer, Photographer, former youth climate activist Slater Jewell-Kemker, Director, “Youth Unstoppable;” former youth climate activist Victoria Loorz, Founder, Center for Wild Spirituality; Author, “Church of the Wild: How Nature Invites Us into the Sacred” Abrar Anwar, Chief Technology Officer, Rebel Force Tech Solutions; former youth climate activist Kyle Gracey, Strategy Consultant, Future Matters; former youth climate activist For show notes and related links, visit https://www.climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Another session to accompany the fifth module in the Youth Dhamma Gradual Teachings series looking into Buddha's Gradual Instructions to Lay People on THE BLESSINGS OF RENUNCIATION (nekkhamma ānisaṃsaṃ). In this additional session, we examine RENOUNCING A SMALL HAPPINESS FOR A GREATER ONE and the story of how the Buddha came to be showered with lavish offerings, shown deep reverence and great devotion following his visit to help the people of Vesali and that it was because of a good deed (renunciation) performed in a past existence (Dhammapada verse 290). We can learn much from this teaching, and from the story of retold by the Buddha. What we have renounced in the past, is helping us towards the Dhamma Path today, and what we do now, will help us later - in developing further, in being of service to others, and towards the ultimate goal. Suttas that are mentioned directly or indirectly in this session: — Mahākoṭṭhikattheraapadāna (Tha Ap 539) — Bāḷisikaṅgapañha (Mil 7.7.9) — Visākhāvatthu (Dhp 53) If you have any questions or comments regarding this talk, please email them to suttameditationseries[at]gmail.com or leave a voicemail message via anchor.fm A VIDEO of this FULL SESSION with presentation slides has been published to the Sutta Meditation Series YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuyzPqgiouk Blessings of the Triple Gem.
