A heads-up world travelers: the BBB is warning people about passport scams. Apparently, the scam tracker has received more than 750 cases this year – including ones from Connecticut. We spoke with Kristen Johnson of the Better Business Bureau CT to learn how this scam works and how to avoid it!

Despite being one of the oldest and most well-known scam techniques, phishing scams continue to be successful. The BBB Scam Tracker reports totaled over 9,000 in 2023, more than double the previous year and a record high. Recent research highlights the negative toll scams have on people. The BBB Institute says the data shows respondents reported feeling anger (69.0%), anxiety/stress (66.7%), loss of trust (58.0%), shame/embarrassment (39.4%), loss of confidence (28.7%), guilt (19.6%), strained relationships (7.5%), and loss of reputation (4.6%) after being scammed. That's why the BBB launched a new toolkit to help victims overcome the emotional impact of scams. Kristen Johnson shared the details on the new program and gave us a tutorial on how it works. In many cases, they aren't. In fact, fraudsters have become so good at hijacking neighborhood Facebook groups, that moderators are having a hard time keeping up.
