Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast.A short extract or audio clip from a recent Dhamma Half-Day Program, held on 17 March 2025, where we intensely developed sutta meditations to understand the Physical Nutriment (form). This short audio clip serves as an encouragement to anyone developing the insight pathways or sutta meditations following the Buddha's instructions.External challenges are usually obvious, but what is less apparent is how we self-sabotage ourselves when it comes to developing or meditating on the Buddha's instructions.Take what is useful. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. We continue our Profitable Perceptions Series with Part VII: Perception of not self in what is suffering (dukkhe anattasaññā) explained in the Dutiyasaññā Sutta (AN 7.49). * Please note this is part of an insight pathway we develop by applying this particular sequence of profitable perceptions from the Buddha. So how we develop the perception of not self in what is suffering is finely tuned to what we have already developed in the earlier profitable perceptions, as well as how it is framed with developing a mind devoid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit regarding this conscious body and all external objects. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. A short extract from the FULL Dhamma session on "The Third Doorway to Nibbana" or Pleasant Practice with Slow Realisation on 5 October 2023. This extract is a brief explanation on the contemplation of mind (cittānupassanā), which is the third establishment of mindfulness as set out by the Buddha in the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (MN 10). The Buddha encouraged us to contemplate the mind as mind. It is fundamentally about understanding our mind states - how they come to arise and how they pass away. We have already learned enough from our sutta meditations to understand how to develop this practice. When we establish mindfulness regarding the mind and insight into the true nature of the mind, we would not cling to the mind. I referred to this Dhamma part in our recent live session on "How to be the best among the best" based on the Sekha-paṭipadā Sutta (MN 53), when we examined the good quality of mindfulness (one of the 15 caranadhamma) in the trainee's path of practice. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. A short extract from the FULL Dhamma live session on "The Buddha's advice on meditation practice for busy people" based on the Mahānāma Sutta (AN 11.11) on 20 July 2024. This extract is the explanation of the EIGHT DIRECTIONS that makes the Buddha the "unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed" or in pali "anuttaro purisadammasārathi". When we develop these eight directions, we see through the gross and subtle things that we attached to that bind us to suffering. We have learned most of this Dhamma through our sutta meditations in order to train. And by developing in these eight directions, we sharpen our spiritual faculties and would naturally incline towards Nibbana as our goal and Nibbana as our object. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This unique Dhamma session was held over Vesak via zoom on "DISPELLING BUDDHIST MYTHS". In this session, we tackled about 6 common Buddhist myths, though we had a longer list of Buddhist myths. One of our kalyanamittas was keen to have an interactive and fun session during Vesak to debunk or dispel some of the common Buddhist myths that exist, particularly in Buddhist countries. As always, take what is useful. — TIMESTAMPS — 00:00 Dispelling Buddhist Myths 01:25 Introduction 05:09 Buddhist myth 01 - Only the wealthy can make merit 16:05 Buddhist myth 02 - Buddha only taught Dhamma to monastic disciples and not lay people 35:35 Buddhist myth 03 - Lay people cannot attain path and fruit 49:43 Buddhist myth 04 - Buddhism is for those worried about life after death, and irrelevant to wellbeing in the present 1:02:59 Buddhist myth 05 - Buddhism is not for the youth, you have to wait till your hair turns grey 1:17:18 Buddhist myth 06 - A child's interest in Dhamma should not be encouraged as they will lose interest in life 1:34:16 Sharing of merit and blessings Much merit (bohoma pin) for the invitation to be part of this session, coming up with our initial list of Buddhist myths and helping to facilitate this session for the benefit of others. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast Updated on 5 June 2024 for extended version to include Q&A This is the guided meditation, Dhamma talk and Q&A with Metta Centre (SYD) on "The Mastery of Buddha's Instructions - How it leads to noble attainment and freedom from suffering". This session was conducted via zoom. — TIMESTAMPS — 00:00 The Mastery of Buddha's Instructions 04:47 Guided meditation on loving kindness based on Karaṇīyametta Sutta 24:35 Dhamma talk on the Mastery of Buddha's Instructions 53:32 Q&A 1:30:39 Sharing of merit and blessings The Buddha praised the mastery of instruction over the mastery of psychic power and the mastery of telepathy because it leads to noble attainment and culminates in complete liberation. Lay people received gradual instructions from the Buddha and attained the fruit of stream entry and more. Now more than 2,500 years after the parinibbāna of the Buddha, if we have faith or conviction in the Buddha, incline towards understanding the Buddha's gradual instructions and diligently practice in accordance with them, we can still expect wonderful results. In this Dhamma session we will examine the Buddha's gradual instructions from the Pali Canon and why they are so valuable and powerful. Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. We continue our Profitable Perceptions Series with Part VI: Perception of impermanence (aniccasaññā) explained in the Dutiyasaññā Sutta (AN 7.49). * Please note this is part of an insight pathway we develop by applying this particular sequence of profitable perceptions from the Buddha. So how we develop the perception of impermanence is finely tuned to what we have already developed in the earlier profitable perceptions, as well as how it is framed with the mind shrinking away from gain, honour and praise. — Rāgapeyyāla (AN 7.615-1124) — Samādhi-bhāvanā Sutta (SN 22.5) — Sīla Sutta (SN 46.3) — Pañcamacchariyasutta (AN 5.254) — Girimānanda Sutta (AN 10.60) — Lābhasakkārasaṁyutta (SN 17) — Assāda Sutta (AN 6.112) — Aniccasaññā Sutta (SN 22.102) — Pheṇapiṇḍūpama Sutta (SN 22.95) The video of this talk has been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SogIxOGAxb4 Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. In this Dhamma session, we wisely contemplate in a progressive way, wholesome and unwholesome states (Kusala Sutta), blameable and blameless states (Sāvajja Sutta), inferior and superior states (Cūḷakammavibhaṅga Sutta), and dark and bright states with their counterparts (Chaḷabhijāti Sutta) referencing key teachings of the Buddha, to deepen our understanding of kamma. This will also enable us to grow in wisdom and deepen our understanding of wrong view and right view, and more importantly, we'll be nourishing the right view that is “noble, taintless, supramundane, a factor of the path”. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. In this Dhamma session, we examine the Third Doorway to Nibbāna — Pleasant Practice with Slow Realisation (sukhā paṭipadā dandhābhiññā). This is the Buddha's medicine for Mental Volition as Nutriment. This is part of the supramundane path and practice. This is a powerful insight pathway, and is suitable for those "who are not strongly prone to lust, hatred and delusion, and don't often experience pain and dejection born of lust, hatred and delusion". We will be drawing on some of the meditations we have practised before. Consider these as pre-requisites to help with this Third Doorway to Nibbāna: (1) Understanding of developing the Four Jhānas - https://tinyurl.com/38ejcbdz or https://tinyurl.com/y87ma9ea (2) Understanding the Four Nutriments (or Four Unprofitable Directions rooted in greed, hatred and delusion) - https://tinyurl.com/3aajdpza (3) Ability to purify the mind (Vatthūpama Sutta, MN 7 or similar) (4) Understanding the Exposition of the Elements (Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta, MN 140) - https://tinyurl.com/yfunf5n2 (5) Understanding the Pathway of Renunciation (Saḷāyatanavibhaṅga Sutta, MN 137) - https://tinyurl.com/5cm6u83u (6) Seven factors of enlightenment - https://tinyurl.com/ymcveve4 (Intro and Overview) and https://tinyurl.com/yfa9fhdz (Sīla Sutta (SN 46.3) In this session we look at: — Pre-requisites for the 3rd doorway to Nibbāna — Recap of the Four Nutriments and Four Modes of Practice — What kind of spiritual faculties and powers are associated with this mode of practice? — What underpins this 3rd doorway to Nibbāna? — "Deep dive" into the insight pathway for pleasant practice with slow realisation — Recap of the meditation instructions Some of the suttas that are directly or indirectly referred to: — Paṭipadāvagga, (AN 4.161-70) — Asubha Sutta (AN 4.163) — Puttamaṁsa Sutta (SN 12.63) — Saṅgīti Sutta (DN 33), — Suttavebhaṅgiya (Pe 9) — Vitthāra Sutta (AN 4.162) — Ubhaya Sutta (AN 4.166) — Brahmājala Sutta (DN 1) — Sekha-pāṭipada Sutta (MN 53) — Nagaropama Sutta (AN 7.67) — Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (MN 10) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) — Anupubbanirodha Sutta (AN 9.31): — Karaṇīyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) — Uposatha Sutta (AN 4.190) — Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta (MN 140) — Saḷāyatanavibhaṅga Sutta (MN 137) — Anumāna Sutta (MN 15) — Cakkavattirāja Sutta (SN 55.1) — Anathapindikaputtakala Vatthu (Dhp 178) — Padhāna Sutta (AN 4.13) — Āḷavaka Sutta (SN 10.12) — Silavanta Sutta (SN 22.122) — Nibbānarūpasaṇṭhānapañha (Mil 6.3.10) — Nibbānasannihitapañha (Mi. 6.3.12) — Dhammacakkapavattana Sutta (SN 56.11) — Sammādiṭṭhi Sutta (MN 9) — Tathāgata Sutta (SN 56.12) — Samādhi-bhāvana Sutta (SN 22.5) — Mettagūmāṇavapucchāniddesa (Cnd 8) — Chandasamādhi Sutta (SN 51.13) — Bhikkhu Sutta (SN 46.5) — Sīla Sutta (SN 46.3) — Kūṭāgāra Sutta (SN 46.7) — Dutiyamettā Sutta (AN 4.126) Bohoma pin (much merit) to those who requested this insight pathway meditation The video of this talk has been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://tinyurl.com/yu52259m Blessings of the Triple Gem. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is an easy check, once we have developed the 10 skilled states through the insight pathway in the Karaṇīyametta Sutta (Snp 1.8) and are radiating loving kindness to all living beings. I like to call it the "stickiness" check. This is how we can diagnose if there are flaws in our metta practice. If so, we can go back to purify and ensure we truly have the 10 skilled states. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. In Part III of our Bojjhaṅga Series, we address some questions on developing the seven factors of enlightenment: 1. Is it possible to develop the bojjhaṅgas at work or while going about daily activities? 2. Can someone arouse the bojjhaṅgas without any desire for enlightenment? 3. Is it possible to develop the bojjhaṅgas by hearing the teachings of someone other than the Buddha? 4. How are bojjhaṅgas aroused through developing the other sutta meditations? 5. Can we develop the bojjhaṅgas in any order? 6. What is the difference between the enlightenment factors of tranquillity, concentration and equanimity? 7. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. A short extract from the FULL Dhamma session on "The progressive development of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment" based on the Sīla Sutta (SN 46.3) on 31 August 2023. This extract is only a *SUMMARY* OF THE PROGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SEVEN FACTORS OF ENLIGHTENMENT. Just as in the Kūṭāgāra Sutta (SN 46.7) with the simile of all the rafters of a peaked house that slant, slope, and incline towards the roof peak, if we are developing and cultivating the bojjhangas correctly (in accordance with the Buddha's instructions), we slant, slope, and incline towards Nibbāna. With wisdom developed through the bojjhangas, Nibbāna is our only goal. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Role models play an important part in all of our lives, whether we seek them out or not. And whether we walk the Buddhist Path or not, they can have the power to shape the direction we take and the ability to influence the decisions that follow on from there. For Buddhist practitioners, the Buddha is our most eminent role model, teacher and the Perfectly Enlightened One. And there are also many noble and great disciples of the Buddha. In this session we delve into the story of Venerable Kumārakassapa Thera, who was born to a young bhikkhuni. After being brought up under the care of King Pasenadī of Kosala, he took novice ordination at seven years old. Later on, after taking full ordination, he was given a riddle from a non-returner deity from the Pure Abodes and asked the Buddha to explain its meaning and instruction on how to contemplate it (Vammika Sutta, MN 23). He subsequently realised the fruit of arahantship by contemplating it and penetrating the Dhamma. We will study the Vammika Sutta (MN 23) in an upcoming Dhamma session. Some of the suttas referred to in this Dhamma talk: — Mahākhandhaka (Kd 1) — Etadaggavagga (AN 1.217) — Vammika Sutta (MN 23) — Pāyāsi Sutta (DN 23) — Nigrodhamigajātaka (Ja 12) — Kumārakassapattheraapadāna (Tha Ap 537) — Kumārakassapattheragāthā (Thag 2.41) — (Uttara) Pāyāsivimānavatthu (Vv 74 or Vv 6.1) — Kumārakassapamātuttherivatthu (Dhp 160) In learning about such noble beings, we can delight in their lives and accomplishments; recognise the importance of seeing them as worthy role models; and use it as inspiration towards progress on the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. In this Dhamma session, we look at a question that has been asked by one of our kalyāṇamittas: “I was wondering if you could do a teaching on the four jhāna similes as found in the Samādhaṅga (Pañcaṅgika) Sutta among many others and how they relate to the development of jhana. The bath attendant, lake, lotuses and white cloth.” In answering this question, we take the opportunity to go through the whole sutta, which has a total of 8 similes given by the Buddha. This is a very powerful teaching from the Buddha on developing the noble five-factored right concentration. It emphasises: how we direct the mind to develop the jhāna concentrations, using the Buddha's jhāna similes as skillful means; having attained the jhāna concentrations, by reviewing we "know" we possess certain important attributes (including the noble eightfold path, the enlightenment factors); and with the noble five-factored right concentration, we now have the basis or foundation to direct the mind towards the special knowledges or supernormal powers, and are capable of realising them. Some of the suttas that are directly or indirectly referred to: — Dvedhāvitakka Sutta (MN 19) — Pāsarāsi Sutta (MN 26) — Vicayahārasampāta (Ne 21) — Āneñjasappāya Sutta (MN 106) — Kāya Sutta (SN 46.2) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) — Culapanthakavatthu (Dhp 25) Bohoma pin (much merit) to the person who asked this question. **A slide with a "Summary of the Buddha's 8 similes from the Samādhaṅga (Pañcaṅgika) Sutta (AN 5.28) as shown in this Dhamma session has been posted to our Telegram channel (https://t.me/suttameditationseries/712) The video of this talk has been published to the Sutta Meditation YouTube channel - https://tinyurl.com/2s3vumw5 Blessings of the Triple Gem.
