Sponsored podcast: From Chelsea to the Berkshires, these organizations do the frontline work of caring for their community when federal policy turns hostile. When ICE raids and hostile federal policies destabilize entire communities, frontline organizations in cities and rural counties alike are answering with door-knocking, theater, wellness programs, and the slow work of building power from within. In this sponsored episode with The Culture & Community Power Fund, two Massachusetts organizations respond to the mounting pressures facing immigrant and refugee communities. The organizations they support are responding to the moment, said Erik Takeshita, Director of The Culture & Community Power Fund. "It was already really hard work, and now it's like you have to add another layer of creativity and ingenuity to really be able to reach out to people,” said Takeshita. La Colaborativa in Chelsea turns organizing and door-knocking into power in so many ways, including policy wins, arts and wellness programming, and a full continuum of youth services. Norieliz DeJesus is the Director of Youth Programs for La Colaborativa, but she first came to the organization as a teen participant. Today, she knows many neighbors who also went through the program and work as nurses, police officers, and community leaders. She considers them part of“ the safety net that this community has created over the years.” “It makes it easier for the community to trust when they can see that the person in those seats of power are people who lived and experienced this community,” said DeJesus, who is a member of the city council. Meanwhile on the other end of the state in Berkshire County, the team at Multicultural BRIDGE—including Gwendolyn VanSant, CEO and founding director, and Dr. Lina Polo, the physician who leads its public health programs—host culturally specific wellness days, support groups, food distribution, and coordinate the county's Community Health Improvement Plan all as ways of addressing isolation, healthcare gaps, and belonging in a predominantly white rural region. "If you treat the least healthy and the person with the least access, it's going to improve things unseen," said VanSant on the need for solidarity. This sponsored series is created in partnership with The Culture & Community Power Fund (C&CPF), a national funders' collaborative advancing the role of culture in building identity, agency, and collective power. This series explores the cultural ecosystem—the traditions, stories, rituals, and spaces that sustain frontline communities—and what it takes to support and strengthen it. Read the complete series.

Sandra Birchmore wanted to be a cop. She walked into the Stoughton Police Explorers program at twelve years old full of admiration for the badge, looking for belonging, looking for guidance, looking for the kind of structure her difficult childhood hadn't provided. What she found instead were predators wearing uniforms.Federal prosecutors allege that Matthew Farwell, an instructor in the program, began grooming Sandra almost immediately. By the time she was fifteen and he was twenty-seven, he had initiated a sexual relationship with her. Text messages uncovered during the investigation show him acknowledging that he took her virginity. One month later, he married his wife. The exploitation continued for nearly a decade. But Farwell wasn't the only officer involved. His twin brother William admitted to a sexual relationship with Sandra and allegedly encouraged her to record her encounters with others and send him the material. Their supervisor, Robert Devine, the man who created the Explorers program, communicated with Sandra under the alias “Marty Riggs” and engaged in sexual encounters with her while on duty. A fourth man, former animal control officer Joshua Heal, acknowledged a sexual encounter at the shelter where Sandra came to adopt a cat.The lawyer for Sandra's estate said it plainly at a hearing: these officers passed her around like she was a toy. Multiple adults inside one department exploited a vulnerable girl they met through a youth mentoring program, and not one of them reported the other. The internal affairs investigation that revealed these relationships didn't happen until 2022 — nineteen months after Sandra was found dead.At his POST Commission hearing, Devine blamed Sandra. He testified that she “pretty much lied about everything” and that she had pursued him. The Commission's thirty-page ruling found otherwise. All three officers have been permanently decertified. Only one faces a federal murder charge. This is Part 1 of a five-part series examining the life and death of Sandra Birchmore, the systems that failed her, and the federal case heading to trial in October 2026.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In 2025, the Deaconess Foundation partnered with St. Louis nonprofit Vision for Children at Risk to launch the NextGen Grantmaking Initiative. The approach reimagines philanthropy by placing decision-making power in the hands of young people. Alicia Selmon, a Harris Stowe State University junior, describes how she and fellow VCR Youth Advisory Council peers approached the grantmaking process. Rob Donnelly, founder and executive director of Opportunity House — one of the initiative's awardees — speaks to how NextGen Grantmakers has impacted his organization's work providing long-term housing and mental health support to queer young people ages 17-24.
I'm excited to share the 45th episode of This is Ag! featuring Chris Devers, CEO of Rancho Cielo, who is no stranger to transforming lives and communities. Rancho Cielo, a nonprofit in Salinas, California, provides at-risk youth with education, mentorship, and hands-on training in agriculture, culinary arts, automotive, and construction, giving them the tools to build practical skills and sustainable careers. Under Chris's leadership, the school has launched groundbreaking initiatives, including the first Future Farmers of America chapter at a charter school, dual enrollment with Hartnell College, and innovative projects like mobile refrigeration units for local organic farmers. Chris's approach puts students first, ensuring their foundational needs are met while connecting them to opportunities that empower them to thrive. Through stories of alumni like Ashley Soto, who went from a work crew member to running her own construction company, and Samuel, who became a hotel engineer and entrepreneur, Chris demonstrates how mentorship, opportunity, and community investment create lasting impact. This conversation highlights why investing in people with empathy, opportunity, and purpose isn't just good for individuals but also strengthens entire communities. Every once and a while I am happy and stunned to find an educational organization that makes me feel envious at the clear impact they are making on kids' lives, and the fun they are having along the way. For me, finding inspiration in other organizations that are keeping ancestral skills alive is an important part of running your own organization. Particularly, those that serve the next generation. In this episode I chat with Neal Ritter, a co-founder of the Laughing Coyote Project, a non-profit teaching earthskills in Colorado since 2007. Neal is happily a generalist, aiming to be above average in as many skills as possible. He is known for playing capture the flag with exuberance, and laughing loudly. Most importantly, he lives with his wife and two kids (who homeschool) on a twenty acre homestead they have the privilege of caretaking.Notes:Laughing Coyote ProjectBoulder Outdoor Survival SchoolSupport the show

Alicia reflects on the craft decisions that shaped it, the patience it demanded, and the joy of seeing a personal story resonate with so many viewers. She also talks about stepping into television, directing episodes of Lockdown, The Parker Andersons, Amelia Parker, and Beyond Black Beauty, where she won the award for Best Direction in a Children's or Youth Program or Series.Alicia closes with a look at the mission that fuels Sugar Glass Films, the company she co founded to champion women and marginalized voices. It's bringing students face-to-face with legends, life lessons, and the values that make great teams—and great people. In this episode, Jerry Csaki, Senior Director of Youth, Education, and Leadership at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, shares how he's turned virtual learning into a front-row seat to greatness. In May, King County prosecutors filed sexual assault charges against a King County sheriff’s deputy. They said he raped a 17-year-old girl. Prosecutors claim the abuse started while the two were alone on a ride-along in his police SUV while she was participating in Explorers, a national youth mentorship program, with the Burien Police Department. And that allegation mirrors a disturbing pattern of abuse within Explorers programs at law enforcement agencies nationwide. We talk with a reporter who has investigated the program about what she found. This program, developed while he served as a counselor in the bishopric, aims to provide youth with structured goals across the four quadrants in the Children and Youth program: spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical. Tanner explains how he drew inspiration from scouting and other youth programs to create a comprehensive list of activities that encourage youth to step outside their comfort zones and engage in meaningful experiences. Throughout the conversation, Tanner discusses the importance of parental buy-in and how the challenge has positively impacted the culture of his small ward, which previously struggled with youth engagement and missionary work. He highlights the success of the program, noting that it has led to increased participation among the youth and has even inspired similar initiatives in other organizations within the ward. The episode emphasizes the significance of celebrating achievements, as Tanner describes the award ceremony where participants receive recognition for their hard work, fostering a sense of community and accomplishment. Leadership is about empowering others to reach their potential, and Tanner's approach serves as a practical example for other leaders looking to inspire and uplift the youth in their wards. 05:48 - Tanner's Background and New Calling 06:59 - The "I Can Do Hard Things" Challenge 09:47 - Overview of the Youth Program and Goals 10:44 - Changing the Culture in the Ward 12:01 - Structure of the Challenge 20:49 - Breakdown of the Challenge Areas 25:07 - Physical Challenge Activities 27:51 - Social Challenge Activities 29:38 - Spiritual Challenge Activities 30:49 - Intellectual Challenge Activities 32:04 - Importance of Accountability 33:01 - Reward Ceremony and Recognition 34:27 - Encouraging Participation and Buy-In The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead.
