This episode could be called "The Wisdom of Rob Crow," Mr. Crow has a lot of wise and insightful observations to share. Regardless, Rob Crow joins Dwyer to talk about fatherhood, how not everything needs to be a reaction to horribleness, sobriety, how at the age of fourteen he already had a proclivity for original music and if someone is promoting art it's probably garbage. PLosives will be playing at Alex's in Long Beach November 5th and QUartyard in San Diego November 6th. In today’s episode Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson along with producer Archana Ram are taping from The Westgate Hotel, where we’re talking restaurant openings, including Cali Banh Mi in Pacific Beach, Dolce at the Highlands’ revamp, and Amplified Ale Works upcoming East Village outpost. Joining us is the Westgate’s executive chef Fabrice Hardel. He’s dishing on his spin on classic French cuisine and the menu he’s created for the hotel’s Jazz Series. Our guest is David Graham, the City of San Diego’s Deputy COO, who’s telling us what it takes to bring businesses to fruition (he was behind the Quartyard), the state’s dated regulations, and more. He also once competed in the World Food Championships and served as sous chef to his mom at cooking competitions. Today’s hot topic is about the science behind restaurant menus. A San Diego-based pizza mini-chain is mentioned in the story. Can you guess which one?
Most cities have unused, vacant pieces of land that go to waste. But it doesn’t have to be that way. At least not according to the three rad guests we have on the podcast today. This weeks episode features the founders of RAD LAB who creatively engaged the San Diego community to solve a problem that has been overlooked by just about everyone. Philip Auchettl, Jason Grauten, and David Loewenstein share the ups and downs and ins and outs of their fascinating business journey that started with Quartyard in San Diego. The guys give us the details of how this thesis project started through Kickstarter and ended up as a wildly popular urban park and event venue that the neighborhood would like to make permanent. They talk about the importance of involving the community in the planning and brainstorming, share how they made the project work financially, and how they were able to profit while giving back. It’s our 50th episode! And it’s a boozy one. Hosts Erin Chambers Smith, Troy Johnson, and producer Archana Ram chat about local restaurant openings, like a pizza drive-thru coming to Pacific Beach and the Quartyard’s move in the East Village. Joining us is the North County-based team behind Misadventure & Co., a vodka company that makes their alcohol from past-due baked goods. They tell us all about how they actually make the spirit, plus the sustainability mission behind their brand. They also brought us a few handles, so of course we do a taste test. We also chat about the problems with the rising popularity of mezcal and Coors rereleasing Zima. We end the show with recommendations for Two People/$50, including The Land & Water Co., Plumeria, and Wrench & Rodent.
Not many people opt to take on City Council and ask them to break the mold in which they operate. Furthermore, it's generally not done by three grad school students with no money in their pockets asking to take over city owned property. Philip Auchettl, Jason Grauten and David Loewenstein did just that and it kickstarted their architecture design and development company, RAD Lab. Four years later, what began as a school project, now has them designing, developing and operating a multitude of projects around the country, such as custom shipping container homes, a beer garden park, homeless shelter pods and most notably, their San Diego based Quartyard. This urban development of an unused city block was transformed into a dog park, coffee shop, restaurant, concert stage and all around community hang out, which is also where we recorded this episode.
