n this week's episode, we're reviewing Bad Words, the 2014 dark comedy where Jason Bateman plays Guy Trilby — a bitter, foul-mouthed adult man who finds a loophole in the rules and crashes a national spelling bee like the world's angriest eighth grader. Why? Revenge, abandonment issues, and apparently a deep need to emotionally scar children one word at a time. We dig into Bateman's directorial debut, the movie's uncomfortable humor, Catherine Hahn's chaotic journalist energy, Rohan Chand's surprisingly delightful performance as Chaitanya, and whether Guy's tiny little redemption arc is enough to make him lovable… or just slightly less awful. Along the way, we talk spelling bee trauma, bad parenting, wildly inappropriate jokes, questionable hotel room decisions, and why this movie somehow manages to be cringeworthy, funny, mean-spirited, and oddly heartfelt all at once. So grab your flashcards, lower your moral standards, and whatever you do…just don't look at us.

Is having a crush the secret to a happy relationship, or the gateway drug to a ruinous affair? We can’t agree. Meanwhile, comedian Nikki Glaser says that sexual cheating is a turn-on and emotional cheating is a no-no. Who’s right, who’s deluded, and who should just be single, according to Emily Vernem? Plus, enthusiasm for hobbies is at an-all time high, but why does it feel like men get all the good ones, while women get the leftovers of leisure? Holly Wainwright talks about her life-changing gardening habit, but acknowledges it’s first to go when life gets busy. So what’s an untouchable 'Sovereign Hobby', and how do we get one? And, there is an unofficial list of things women do to look like they have their shit together, and it involves everything from keeping whites white, to having enough coathangers, to knowing what stock is. Clare Stephens just wishes she could remember the snacks. TV RECCOS SPECIAL Clare’s watching: DTF St. Louis on HBO Max. This week, Geordie and Michelle are heading to Kingston, New York, for the true-life case that inspired the show Michelle is currently obsessed with, DTF St Louis...When Thomas Kolman was found in his car outside a gym in 2011, the case seemed to turn into something much darker involving a dentist called Gilberto Núñez. Firstly, the pair were friends. Secondly, Gilberto was doing the do with Thomas's wife, Linda. Then there were sedatives, strange behaviour, fake CIA documents, crazy texts... By the time it reached court, you had a jury being asked to decide whether this was a calculated murder or something far less clear-cut, and the outcome isn't quite what you'd expect. And then you have DTF St Louis, which was loosely based on this strange case. So grab a brown lemonade and settle in as the duo chat the bellybuttons, Banksy, Jason Bateman and more, only on Eavesdroppin'. In the new HBO miniseries “DTF St. Louis,” Jason Bateman plays a weatherman living with his wife and kids in a sleepy town just outside of St. Louis. He befriends a coworker, Floyd Smernitch (David Harbour), and the two sign up for a dating app that specializes in clandestine affairs. By the end of the first episode, Smernitch is dead. So begins a whodunnit set against the backdrop of suburban America and the discontents simmering beneath. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz survey how the setting has been used over the decades, from the films of Douglas Sirk and the stories of John Cheever in the nineteen-fifties and sixties to the fantasy of that era seen in 1985's “Back to the Future.” Today, the locale is being assessed anew. Like “DTF,” the recent docuseries “Neighbors” strips the suburbs of their glamour, focussing instead on petty grievances and property disputes. “They are small stakes, but of course, everything that is quintessentially American—property, the right to violence, the right to protect land—are all intensely operative in this space,” Cunningham says. “And if something goes wrong, somebody pays for it.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“DTF St. Louis” (2026—)“‘DTF St. Louis' Peers Into the Suburban Male Psyche,” by Vinson Cunningham (The New Yorker)“The Swimmer,” by John Cheever (The New Yorker)“Judy Blume: A Life,” by Mark Oppenheimer“Wifey,” by Judy Blume“Back to the Future” (1985)“All That Heaven Allows” (1955)“Desperate Housewives” (2004-2012)“American Pie” (1999)“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003)“Adventures in Babysitting” (1987)“The Five-Forty-Eight,” by John Cheever (The New Yorker)“Neighbors” (2026—)“All Her Fault” (2025)“Friendship” (2025)New episodes drop every Thursday. Crime fiction has rarely produced a protagonist quite like Kay Scarpetta. For decades, Patricia Cornwell's bestselling novels followed the brilliant forensic pathologist and medical examiner navigating grisly cases while balancing the messy emotional realities of family, love, and professional obsession. Now, the long-awaited adaptation has finally arrived in the form of Prime Video's new series “Scarpetta,” starring Nicole Kidman as the iconic medical examiner alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and more. The show is shepherded by creator and showrunner Liz Sarnoff, whose writing résumé includes “Barry,” “Lost,” “Deadwood,” and “Marco Polo.” The series takes an ambitious approach to Cornwell's world by weaving together two timelines: one set in the late 1990s and another in the present day, allowing the story to explore both the early years of Scarpetta's career and the more seasoned version of the character audiences meet decades later.READ MORE: ‘DTF: St. Louis': Jason Bateman, Linda Cardellini, David Harbour, & Steve Conrad On Vulnerability, Sexual Secrets, & Jason Bateman's MCU Character [Bingeworthy Podcast]On this episode of The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, Sarnoff joins host Mike DeAngelo to talk about finally bringing the beloved character to the screen, why the show merges multiple books into a single narrative structure, how Kidman approached the technical realities of forensic work, and how the series distinguishes itself from typical procedural storytelling.

Michael J. Fox couldn't make it back, so they sent in Jason Bateman. Mike and Christian dive into Teen Wolf Too (1987), the werewolf-themed boxing sequel nobody asked for and everyone immediately forgot. They break down why swapping high school basketball for college boxing is somehow both the same movie and a much worse one, what Bateman brings to the role of Todd Howard, and exactly how a film this commercially-minded managed to crater so completely.Whether you saw this one as a kid and need answers, or have never encountered it and are curious what "franchise desperation" looked like in the late '80s, pull up a chair. It's pretty bad. That's the point

Host Victor and Sona discuss HBO's DTF: St. Louis after episode 2, debating whether it works as a dark comedy and criticizing its shifting framing devices and repeated scenes while trying to reconstruct a clear chronology of events leading to Floyd's death. They compare “he said/she said” perspectives, note David Harbour's concert/sign-language subplot, the detectives' competing theories, and key evidence such as the Tiger profile, IP-address ambiguity, and a prescription delivered to Jason Bateman's house, leading them to suspect Bateman's wife may be framing him. They also flag open questions about Floyd's stepson, Carol's behavior, and how the story can sustain multiple episodes. Victor briefly reviews Netflix's Vladimir as frustrating and unsatisfying, recommends Rooster based on its first episode, and they touch on Shrinking, plus upcoming shows Scarpetta and other podcast coverage. mailto:needssomeintroduction@gmail.com 00:00 Show Intro and Premise 00:51 Vladimir and Adult Themes 05:28 Rooster and Shrinking Detour 06:32 Indiana Jones Theme Joke 07:32 DTF St Louis Setup 10:05 Framing Device Critique 16:10 Timeline Reconstruction 23:16 Unexplained Clues Tiger Profile 26:06 Who Framed Him Theory 27:49 Linda Carini Suspicions 28:24 Hearing Loss And Taping 29:54 Is Carol The Culprit 32:04 Replayed Scenes And Timeline 34:27 Jamba Juice Drink Discrepancy 36:39 Weird Fantasies And POV Structure 39:43 Prescription Evidence Breakdown 42:17 Midlife Themes And Critique 43:34 Stepson And Family Dynamics 48:01 Wrap Up And Other Shows
