JP Hasson is a musician, comedian and visual artist based in Los Angeles. For the last 2 decades he has toured and recorded with his conceptual music/comedy acts Pleaseeasaur and JP Inc. He is also the founder, CEO and creative director at Hasco Enjoyments, the combined works of JP Hasson and JP Inc.  Hasco Enjoyment's latest effort, WOW!, a lush and dreamy instrumental album, is available now everywhere in the world.  JP and Joe share their formative rock n roll years in Seattle and compare early lives in small towns where the effort for culture required more creativity than that of a big city.  JP tells us how WOW! began as comedy record, eventually transformed into an instrumental record and why letting go of the conceptual reins was a novel experience for him.  JP sheds light on the song title “Sometimes My Dad Is An Eagle” and why it is both an uncomfortable and fun expression. JP shares his experiences touring with Devo and Josh Freese, performing on Jimmy Fallon with Pinback and confirms a performance on Fox News with JP Inc. The two talk natto and vegemite, JP gives a hot tip on dealing with "stir" peanut butter and we hear a few tunes from WOW! Our San Diego Design Week series on inspiration and the senses continues with a deeper dive into sound with musician Kenseth Thibideau. Kenseth shares with us what inspires him to create, how he continues to develop his craft, and why experimenting and taking risks with our creative work is so valuable. We also discuss the impact sound can have on our immediate environment and how it can change or enhance our experience. Whichever medium you work with creatively, I hope this conversation inspires you to explore how sound could play a more prominent or intentional role. Guest Bio In the past dozen years, Kenseth Thibideau has become a staple of the Southern California independent music scene. He co-founded a pair of highly-acclaimed experimental rock groups (Tarentel and Rumah Sakit) while in San Francisco, then returned to San Diego to find himself suddenly collaborating with many of the city's most respected and acclaimed musicians. He soon became a touring member of Pinback and Three Mile Pilot, and formed Sleeping People, the frenetic instrumental group that also featured a pre-Dirty Projectors Amber Coffmann—all while continuing his semi-solo Howard Hello project with Marty Anderson (Okay, Dilute). No longer masked in monikers, Thibideau is making what may be the most subtly rewarding music of his career, displaying the countless strengths of one of the west coast's most genuinely talented musicians. Toward the middle of the 1990s, the shift away from loud grunge, post-hardcore, and punk resulted in a wide variety of more introspective sounds. Some bands were tagged with emo, some with slowcore, others with simply indie rock. From Death Cab for Cutie and John Vanderslice to Elliott Smith and Iron & Wine, the late 90s and early aughts were full bands turning down both the volume and tempo. San Diego's Pinback, comprised of veteran scene musicians Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV, utilize a wide variety of instruments and approaches on their self-titled debut from 1999. A simple drum preset can carry an entire song, mixing a variety of analog keyboard and guitar sounds, while occasionally introducing samples, guitar-mimicking vinyl scratching, or vocal loops. It's a melancholy but charming debut that presents many interesting ideas that sometimes lack a second or third gear to make them truly inspired.   Songs in this Episode: Intro - Hurley 17:34 - Tripoli 20:20 - Rousseau 25:33 - Crutch Outro - Lyon   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Paper Mice is a three-piece whirligig from Chicago that blends a freakish range of influences into miniature, prog-punk puzzles. Started in 2008 by Dave Reminick, Adam McCormack, and John Carroll, Taylor Hales took over for Adam on bass duties in 2013, and the band has been writing and performing together since that time. The band is a fixture in Chicago’s tight-knit DIY community, performing their high-wire “stop-start mess of rhythmic tics and awkward face plants” for dance-soaked warehouse hounds throughout the Midwest and East Coast. Over the years, they’ve toured and/or performed with musical peers Pinback, NNAMDI, Meat Wave, Melkbelly, Oozing Wound, and The Spektral Quartet, amongst others. Influences include The Beach Boys, The Residents, Abba, The Talking Heads, Nomeansno, This Heat, and Susana Baca. Paper Mice’s first album, Paint it Pink, featured sixteen short, spastic songs about bizarre news stories, botched surgeries, and hirsute politicians. The follow-up, The Funny Papers (also on Three One G Records), continued the band’s jagged jaunt through the world of current events with eleven tracks about canine heroes, fast-food, financial meltdowns, and Dolly Parton. 1-800-Mondays follows in this quirky tradition, with every song being about weird and ridiculous true stories from the news-- in particular, this album often focuses on fire (mainly, people setting things on fire accidentally/on purpose). Channeling The Residents’ strange conceptual brilliance, The Beach Boys’ pop sensibilities, and expertly arranged musical complexity throughout, the band also enlists Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet, Mike Hogg, and Ben Roidl-Ward as guest appearances on the album. Though the LP has been in the works for almost a decade now due to various roadblocks, surely, the timing is apt for this ode to the absurd, as we seem to be in something of a golden age of insanity when it comes to headlines.

Our guest, Autumn Freeman on Instagram @justaddganja, has complex PTSD from prolonged childhood abuse, sexual assaults and an attack where she was stabbed in the face and chest. She never recovered from any of the trauma. So it compounded and got worse. She developed a Panic disorder and Major depression- a few suicide attempts and several hospitalizations over the course of her life, and it’s been really hard. Through brain scans done by top neuroscientists, they found that her brain had gone through so much trauma that is was damaged similar to that of a traumatic brain injury. In 2006, she was introduced to Psilocybin mushrooms and MDMA. “At first psychedelic use was purely recreational. But after my first experience it was so exciting and enlightening that I started digging into Huxley and all the pioneers. I started to be more intentional with it. Over the course of maybe about 6 months, I was doing Psilocybin and MDMA self-assisted therapy” with her boyfriend. “During that time period, I was the most functional I had ever been in my entire life”. Since recording this podcast, Autumn and her family have uprooted their lives and moved to Oregon in pursuit of gaining safe access to cannabis. In her immediate family, she has to treat autism, epilepsy, PTSD, TBI, and anxiety disorders. In her experience, cannabis and psilocybin containing mushrooms 100% help to both alleviate the symptoms and heal the damages caused by these illnesses.Thank you so much every one. He used to play in Rumah Sakit and Tarentel, 2 San Francisco bands that altered the course of my personal musical development, as well as amazing bands like Pinback, Sleeping People, Goblin Cock, and lots more. Being a positive guy, Kenseth has a hard time coming up with a worst show ever, and tends to find a silver lining in most of the awful or weird show experiences he recalls. Some gems come up though, and it's lovely to talk to him about the incestuous San Diego music scene and all the strange places that has taken him.
