Have you ever had to have a tough conversation with a loved one? Maybe it was about their physical health? Perhaps it was about their emotional or mental health.  Sometimes these conversations can be really difficult, so I am so thankful that Dr. Matthew Sleeth is back on the podcast, and he is going to talk about his book, *Hope Always: How to be a force for life in a culture of suicide. September is Suicide Prevention Month and each year on the podcast, I try to highlight one episode where I give ideas or tools or share about this subject that is just not talked a lot about, especially in the church.  So today, I am excited for you to hear from Matthew and just the practical tools he gives us on how to have these tough conversations, how to enter into the conversation as well as how to help them.  He is a medical doctor and worked in the emergency room for many years, so he brings a unique perspective. So again, I know this subject is hard to talk about, but I want to give voice to this because lives matter, and I want us to be a help to those that are struggling. Also, I am so excited for someone to win a copy of Dr. Sleeth's book: *Hope Always. No one in this conversation is a trained counselor, therapist, or medical professional. The show is not intended to offer medical advice. If you or someone you know struggles with anything discussed in this episode, please seek professional medical council and assistance.   In this Episode: How many of us deal with depression, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts but don't ever talk about it? In places where we should feel safe, we often fear judgment or feel anxiety while trying to diagnose where our thoughts may be coming from. Not to mention the stigma that comes when we begin discussing mental health with others. On this “best of” God Hears Her episode, Eryn and Elisa revisit a conversation with Sarah J. Robinson where they talk about mental health and Sarah's journey of understanding her own depression.   About Our Guest: Sarah J. Robinson once believed her lifelong battle with depression made her a bad Christian. And yet, through her years of shame, self-harm, and suicide attempts, Sarah learned that God is present in our deepest darkness. Sarah is now an author and speaker who helps others discover that mental illness doesn't disqualify them from living rich, beautiful lives in Christ. Drawing from a decade of ministry experience and the mental health field, Sarah helps readers fight for wholeness and cultivate joy. She lives in Nashville with her husband.   Notes and Quotes: “I didn't know my thoughts were not what everyone else was thinking.” “The common misconception is that depression is sadness.” There is a difference between intrusive thoughts and suicidal thoughts/tendencies. “We sort of overlooked passages in Scripture where God walked through suffering with people.” “There is that honeymoon phase of faith where everything is new and awesome, but I quickly learned that I couldn't just ‘choose joy.'” “Nothing helped because I had an illness that needed to be treated, not a lack of prayer or a lack of faith.” “I remember journaling and thinking, You deserve more than this, God. You are perfect and deserve more than this mess.” “People mean well, but they are ill-informed or ill-equipped.”  “People who really wanted to love me well are the people that said the most hurtful things.” “God choosing to take the long road with me has revealed His kindness and His character in a way I would not trade for anything.” Discovering joy versus choosing joy. “You are worth everything it takes to get better.”    Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show:  God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order God Loves Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women: https://ourdailybreadpublishing.org/god-loves-her.html Order Sarah's book I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die: Finding Hope in the Darkness of Depression - https://amzn.to/3CpzqrC  Sarah's Instagram: sarahjrbnsn Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Remember, if you or someone you love is hurting due to suicidal thoughts or tendencies, you can dial the suicide hotline at 800-273-8255 or chat with someone on suicidepreventionlifeline.org. Do you struggle with depression? Do you have dark days or maybe someone in your family does and this is a reality that you live with? This week on the podcast, Sarah J. Robinson and I discuss her book, *I Love Jesus, But I Want To Die. I think sometimes we think that if we have faith, we will not struggle with depression. But that is not true. I am so thankful to Sarah for vulnerably sharing her struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts as well as offering hope to those walking through their darkest days. I believe her story will also give hope to those who have a loved one who struggles with depression. It is National Suicide Prevention Week and I think this is a great time to bring voice to this important subject that is not always talked about much. We talk about finding a therapist and overcoming shame in this episode. Honestly, my favorite part is the loving words a couple spoke to Sarah in her greatest time of need. We can all learn so much for the wisdom and truth shared. Also, I am so excited for someone to win a copy of Sarah's book, *I Love Jesus, But I Want To Die. Drawing from a decade of ministry experience and the mental health field, Sarah helps readers fight for wholeness and cultivate joy. She lives in Nashville with her husband. In this debut book, Sarah offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. She shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. If you struggle with mental illness, you are not alone. In fact, 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 children experience mental illness each year. Which can ripple into further issues: a higher risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, substance abuse, higher unemployment, high schoolers are more than twice as likely to drop out of school. Alarmingly, the suicide rate in the U.S. has increased by 35% since 1999. Is it different in the Church? Are Christians free from struggling with mental illness? What happens when loving Jesus doesn't cure you of depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts? Maybe you're told to "choose joy" or "pray more" and you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. So you just want a way out. That's what Sarah J. Robinson had to fight through as a person of faith—someone in ministry. Now she's out with a new book, titled: "I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die: Finding Hope in the Darkness of Depression" to help you discover that mental illness doesn't disqualify you from living a rich, beautiful life in Christ. That there is hope.  This episode discusses depression, self-harm and suicide. If you need someone to talk to when you feel overwhelmed, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-TALK. EPISODE SHOWNOTES WHAT’S YOUR CAUSE? Take our quiz.
