191. Creativity Without Expectation (with Jena Holliday)

God Hears Her Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 29:22

Guest Bio: Jena Holliday is the author of Sacred Creativity and a full-time artist, author, entrepreneur, and storyteller. She is the creator and owner of Spoonful of Faith, an illustration and design studio. With just a bit of faith, she walked away from her mainstream marketing job to embrace her passion for art. What started as a hobby eventually evolved into a full-time commitment to spread kindness and hope through her artwork and words. That commitment blossomed into a blog and shop, aptly named Spoonful of Faith, and has thus become not only a successful business but a cultural beacon. Jena has been featured on Good Morning America, Ebony, Essence, People, Nylon, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo, Artful Living, and many more prominent outlets.     Show Summary: What gifts do you think God has blessed you with? Do you see creativity in your gifts? Oftentimes we neglect to notice the diverse ways that God has blessed each of us with creativity. It does not always have to be writing, drawing, painting, or doing a craft. Jena Holliday has found that being creative can grant us a different type of connection with the Lord. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins as they learn about sacred creativity with Jena during this God Hears Her conversation.    Notes and Quotes:   “Why are you asking everyone else where to go, who to be, and what do except the One who created you?” —Jena Holliday  “God didn't make a mistake when He made us who we are. It wasn't by chance; it wasn't a coincidence. It was on purpose. That really helped me to step into the fullness of the voice that the Lord had given me.” —Jena Holliday  “What I have learned is that there is a hunger to see the different ways that the image of God is reflected on the earth. It's cool to be in this position as an artist and illustrator because I have the unique role of creating something in a visual way that doesn't require words. It was always important to me that I showcase different women and different images and illustrations of people because I wanted them to feel seen. I wanted people to know that they were loved, heard, and that their stories matter.” —Jena Holliday  “You should use [your gift] as a way to honor the Gift Giver, the One who has given it to you. We all have a corner of this earth where we get to use our gifts. Whatever God does to multiply it, that's Him—that's not on us. That's not our responsibility.” —Jena Holliday  “If you have something that God has given you and it's still neatly wrapped in a box, I think that's an invitation to open it up, spend a little time with it, and see what He does with it.” —Jena Holliday  “Everyone should take the risk to use the gifts that God has given them.” —Jena Holliday  “The way that Jesus loves us is so deep is that He will come after you. He will come find you again and guide you back to where He would like you to be and you get to keep walking forward together.” —Jena Holliday      Related Episodes:  Ep 141: Rethinking Creativity with Rachel Marie Kang: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/rethinking-creativity/  Ep 163: Mindful Creativity with Anh Lin: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/mindful-creativity/    Links:   Jena's book Sacred Creativity: https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Creativity-Inspiration-Reclaim-God-Given/dp/0593581474  Jena Holliday's Website: https://www.spoonfuloffaith.com/  Jena's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aspoonfuloffaith/  God Hears Her website: https://go.odb.org/ghh191   Watch the episode on the God Hears Her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM  God Hears Her email sign-up: https://go.odb.org/ghh-sign-upsfmc191   Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast  Shop God Hears Her books and resources: https://go.odb.org/ghh-shop191   Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/  Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/  Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/  Our Daily Bread Ministries website: https://go.odb.org/odbm191

God Hears Her Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 26, 2025 27:11

Guest Bio: Whitney Lowe is an author who wants to see young women excited about God's work: in the Bible, in history, in the world, and in them. She writes and creates on Instagram, previously known as Scribble Devos, a project born from the realization that young women simply do not interact with the Bible enough to be changed by its truth. Whitney is passionate about disrupting the toxic scroll of social media with hope, peace, and light straight from Scripture. She lives in Denver, Colorado, with her husband, who is a pastor, and their two young children.    Show Summary: When you read the Bible, what stands out to you most about Jesus? His kindness? His servant heart? His patience? Whitney Lowe has been challenged through different seasons of her life to grow spiritually in different ways to become more like Jesus. Whether it's conviction about an eating disorder or reading the Bible out loud to young kids, she's determined to shine her light to lead others closer to Christ. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins as they learn how Whitney has spiritually grown through different life seasons. This God Hears Her conversation will encourage and inspire you!    Notes and Quotes:   “If He is calling us into the service of hungry people then God wants us fed too.” —Whitney Lowe    “If you are a parent, if you are a mother, that is spiritual formation. That is doing the work of ‘quiet time' and maybe even more so because it is real and is happening in real time. If you allow God into that space, He is doing the transformative work.” —Whitney Lowe    “What if we just allowed God to spiritually form us in the struggles that are coming anyway, and we invited Him into those spaces through prayer?” —Whitney Lowe    “I am a really big believer that we as a society are overthinking what it looks like to be sacrificial and servant-hearted. We start to think: ‘what organization do I need to start' or ‘where am I supposed to put all my money for the year, who am I supposed to be giving to.'. When in actuality I think so many of us live in places where if we just open our eyes to our neighbors, we would see people who needed help and needed service.” —Whitney Lowe    “I might not see the end result of that little act of faithfulness, but I know that God calls me to care about people.” —Whitney Lowe    “We have to be okay, as believers, with people knowing that we are deeply flawed. You have to be okay with the reconciliation that might have to come after that sometimes and the fact that you don't have to be strong because God will put people in your life that can be.” —Whitney Lowe    Verses:   Hosea  Parable of the Sower: Matthew 13    Related Episodes:  GHH Ep 86 – When We Pray Like Jesus: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/when-we-pray-like-jesus/  GHH Ep 120 – Let's Talk About Spiritual Formation with Shalini Bennett: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/lets-talk-about-spiritual-formation/    Links:   Whitney Lowe's Devotional: https://www.amazon.com/Set-Your-Eyes-Higher-Devotional/dp/0310464404  Whitney Lowe's Website: https://www.scribbledevos.com/about  Whitney Lowe's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whitneypiersonlowe/?hl=en  God Hears Her website: https://godhearsher.org/  Watch the Video Podcast Here: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM  God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc   Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast  Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/  Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/  Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/  Our Daily Bread Ministries website: https://www.odbm.org/

In this powerful episode, we're joined by author, speaker, and former MOPS International President Elisa Morgan to talk about what it truly means to empower the next generation of women in the Church. Drawing from her decades of leadership experience, Elisa unpacks the challenges women have faced in church settings, the progress we've seen, and what we can do to empower those coming behind us.  Together we explore: The theological and practical implications of women being made in the image of God. The theological and practical implications of women being "ezer kenegdo." The importance of mentorship, representation, and biblical literacy for women.  Why every generation plays a crucial role in raising up the next.  With wisdom, grace, and honesty, Elisa reminds us that empowering women isn't just about giving permission - it's about creating space, offering support, and embracing giftings.  Elisa Morgan on Instagram  Elisa Morgan Website  God Hears Her Podcast

Guest Bio: Jessica Herberger is a writer and Bible teacher who delights in connecting faith, history, and human flourishing. She is the author of Peace in the Dark, Life Surrendered, and Break Bread Together. Through her writing and speaking, Jessica encourages others to pursue a deeply formed spiritual life, grow in community, and love others well. Jessica and her husband, Josh, live in upstate New York with their three kids, where she can be found surrounded by books and music with her pup Winston always at her feet.    Show Summary: When you read the gospels, how often do you stop to think about the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday? Holy Saturday, that often-overlooked day in between, was a day of silence as the disciples and followers of Jesus mourned His death. It was a day of deep grief and painful lament. Jessica Herberger has been in her own Holy Saturdays ever since the death of her mother. Her grief led her to honor Holy Saturday, and she is passionate about teaching people ways that they too can mark the day in between. Join hosts, Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins, as they learn about Holy Saturday and the ways we can honor it with guest, Jessica Herberger, during this God Hears Her conversation.     Notes and Quotes:   “Holy Saturday is that time chronologically between the end of Good Friday and the beginning of Easter Sunday.” —Jessica Herberger    “I believe that there is not one single thing that happened between those days was accidental. I believe that every single thing that happened was God's kindness and showing His church how to live, and that has to include this 24-hour period of where it feels like nothing is happening.” —Jessica Herberger    “[Holy Saturday] makes [the hope of Easter] Sunday all the more richer when we realize that there was this dark, unknown period too. We're called to hold both.” —Jessica Herberger    “At its core, lament is relational. It is a means of demonstrating your personal relationship with a God who hears you, who wants to hear you cry about because you know where to go to cry out.” —Jessica Herberger    “As we know who Jesus is, we can then remember His character. Knowing God's character is really one of the most essential things someone can do to maintain a spiritually healthy life, because it is the filter that we must put everything.” —Jessica Herberger      Verses:   Luke 23:55-56    Links:   Jessica's Website: https://www.jessicaherberger.com/  Jessica's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jessherberger/  God Hears Her website: https://godhearsher.org/  God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc   Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast  Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/  Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/  Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/  Our Daily Bread Ministries website: https://www.odbm.org/    MB01O2BAHS0OF3W

Loneliness is an ache that too many of us—moms, daughters, grandmothers—carry in silence. In a world more connected than ever through technology, why do we often feel so alone? How can we guide our girls toward meaningful, faith-filled relationships when we ourselves sometimes struggle to find them?  In this powerful episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, host Patti Garibay sits down with author and faith leader Elisa Morgan to explore the reality of loneliness and how God's presence offers true companionship. Elisa, former CEO of MomCo and co-host of God Hears Her, shares wisdom from her own journey and insights from her books, including You Are Not Alone and The Beauty of Broken.  Together, Patti and Elisa dive into the impact of isolation on girls and mothers alike, uncovering the difference between loneliness and solitude, the role of the church in fostering community, and how Scripture can be an anchor in our most isolating moments. You'll also hear practical ways to help your daughter build Christ-centered friendships and discover her worth in God's eyes.  If you've ever wrestled with loneliness or wondered how to help your daughter navigate feelings of isolation, this episode is for you. Have you ever had a terrible Christmas? Do you find yourself getting caught up in making things look perfect, even though you're exhausted or feeling alone? When the Christmas season rolls around, we often forget the true miracle of Christmas. Join hosts Elisa Morgan, Eryn Eddy Adkins, and Vivian Mabuni as they trace the Lord's promises throughout Scripture to remind us of Immanuel, God with us. Join us for this special God Hears Her podcast Christmas Bible study.   Notes and Quotes:  “We have a hard time at Christmas, sometimes, because we don't have a very realistic view of it. We imagine it to be something magical, instead of it being something truly, divinely miraculous. When we understand the miracle of Christmas, it changes our ‘rotten'.” —Elisa Morgan “In the midst of the really hard, I can't really see the miraculous unless I'm with God. . .” —Vivian Mabuni “No matter the unpredictable Christmas I will get, I can rest knowing that the Lord will carry me through, and be there for me. —Eryn Eddy Adkins “When we pause long enough to imagine that this God of the universe, our Immanuel God, that He wants to have His presence within us. . . He promises His spirit within us to help us with what we need.” —Elisa Morgan   Verses:  Luke 1:39-56 Matthew 1:18-23 Genesis 26:3 Genesis 31:3 Exodus 3:12 Joshua 1:15 Isaiah 41:10 Isaiah 43:2 Jeremiah 1:8 Matthew 28:20 Romans 8:26-27 Luke 10:38-42   Links:  God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc  Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Carols of Christmas Video: Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/ Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/ Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/ Our Daily Bread Ministries website: https://www.odbm.org/   MB01LJ0CE2QUFNB

She is the founder of Full Collective, creator of the annual Sowers Summit, and host of the Being a Sanctuary podcast. She has spoken at conferences such as Proverbs 31 and Verity Conference and has written for Chasing Justice and She Reads Truth. She recently published a book with Brazos Press (An Imprint of Baker Publishing Group) titled Being a Sanctuary: The Radical Way for the Body of Christ to be Sacred, Soft, and Safe. Pricelis is currently pursuing a master of arts in biblical and theological studies from Denver Seminary and is a proud Black Latina born and raised in New York City, where she currently resides with her husband and son.    Show Summary: Do you ever feel like you're running on empty? Maybe your schedule is filled and you feel like you have no time to do the things you want to do or spend time with people you miss. Sometimes we feel empty because we're lacking a community that can help fulfill our needs or lend a hand. Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez realized that women were running themselves dry while simultaneously missing out on a devoted community to spend time with. She founded The Full Collective with the hope of bringing women together to experience the fullness that God wants us to have through Him in our lives. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Vivian Mabuni as they learn more about The Full Collective and how we can find fullness through Christ and community during this episode of God Hears Her.   Notes and Quotes:  “No matter what the battle that has come forth is, no matter what has tried to be stolen, destroyed, or killed in their life, that does not change the fullness that God has for us.” —Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez  “I was very much in search of God, but I was looking for Him in a lot of things, a lot of different people, and a lot of different places. . . . I was filled with remembering that I am loved and seen by God, and that He's actually been pursuing me and running after me all these years I've been running away from Him.” —Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez  “We have to bring our questions to the feet of Jesus.” —Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez  “We need to remember that our faith is not individualized. Although our salvation is individual, the work that the body of Christ is called to do on Earth is a collective work.” —Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez   “What is absolute truth is that Jesus came to give us life, and life to the full.” —Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez     Verses:  John 10:10 Matthew 28:18-20 1 Corinthians 12:26 Jeremiah 29:11 John 14:26 Psalm 23:6 John 7:38   Links:  Learn more about The Full Collective Pricelis' book God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc  Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/ Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/   MB01JRU4C2PA0FU

Tara lives in Oregon with her husband, Michael, and their son, Hunter. Do you think of giving up? Or do you think of laying your life down for good? When we think about surrendering our lives to God, we don't realize the outcome of surrendering all things to Him. We may have a harder time with control than we think. Our God Hears Her podcast guest today is Tara Sun, a woman who had to learn how to surrender her story to the Lord. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins as they learn how to surrender control with Tara Sun during this conversation on God Hears Her.    Notes and Quotes:  “We live in a kingdom where Jesus said a lot of upside-down things that actually make a lot of sense when we live by His Word and listen to His Word.” —Tara Sun “When you lay your life down, you get to pick up something greater.” —Tara Sun “God doesn't waste anything. It's for a reason, even if I didn't plan it. And it's all leading up to creating a stronger, more sanctified you. A you that knows who God is more.” —Tara Sun “It doesn't matter the greatest plans that I can come up with, it can never touch the goodness and greatness of God's purposes for my life. He wants our obedience and our “yes” coupled with His divine purposes because ultimately He is in control.” —Tara Sun “The narrative of surrender is actually at the heart of what it means to be a disciple.” —Tara Sun   Verses:  Romans 5:3-5 Genesis 32:22-30 Luke 9:23 John 14:26 Philippians 1:6   Links:  Tara's website: https://www.tarasunministries.com/ Tara's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/misstarasun God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc  Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/ Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/   MB01TIYFMDGJI53
