Join the conversation in our community HERE! In this empowering episode, Christy and Meade welcome author and speaker Laura Smith for a rich conversation about her latest book, Brave Woman, Mighty God. Laura—now a 15-time published author—shares her heart behind the book's message and reminds us that strength doesn't come from “girl power” but from God power. Together, they explore the stories of bold biblical women like Mary Magdalene, Sarah, and others who did mighty things—not because they were fearless, but because they were faithful. Laura unpacks how faith invites us to overcome hustle culture, live out our God-given purpose, and root our strength in Christ, not in performance. Drawing from both Brave Woman, Mighty God and her previous book The Urgency of Slowing Down, Laura encourages listeners to let go of burnout culture and embrace restorative spiritual rhythms. The conversation gets personal as the hosts reflect on their own struggle with hurry, the importance of screen sabbaths, and how true rest is found in presence with God, not productivity. This episode is filled with scripture, wisdom, and compassion for women who want to trust God more deeply—especially in seasons of waiting, struggle, or uncertainty. If you've ever doubted your calling, wrestled with comparison, or felt worn down by the world's demands, this conversation will meet you right where you are. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How biblical women inspire courage through their faith, not their perfection The dangers of hustle culture and the healing power of slowing down How to embrace rest as a spiritual practice, not just a productivity tool Why community is essential in walking out our faith and freedom What to do in seasons of waiting, and how to trust God's timing Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community.  Join our private, small-group coaching space, The Missing Peace, and get BJDW all-community access for free! https://butjesusdrankwine.com/coaching Order Christy's book now available! Thriving Beyond Belief with Cheryl Scruggs

On this episode of Thriving Beyond Belief, Cheryl Scruggs welcomes Laura L. Smith! How many to-dos, responsibilities, relationships...are you  juggling? I don't want this frantic feeling of trying to keep it all together but fearing that at any moment it will all come tumbling down. Do you? It's urgent for us to slow down. For our bodies and our souls. We can do this. We need to for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Jesus promises us the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. But if we're scrolling or speeding so quickly through our lives, it's hard to notice any of that richness or fullness, let alone make room for it or tap into it. When we're running full speed ahead, we don't feel like we can muster any patience or self-control, and we struggle to recall when we last felt anything resembling peace. We're zooming around so fast we don't have time to accept lovely invitations from God to connect with Him through prayer, reading our Bibles, being present, and celebrating the good stuff. But I want to. Do you? Are you ready to try? Dive into the pages of The Urgency of Slowing Down and go on a journey with Laura L. Smith of unpacking what's in our lives, why it's there, what we don't need, what we can let go of, and what we can add in... so we can step into the unforced rhythms of grace Jesus invites us into. According to the CDC, mental illnesses are the most common health conditions in the United States, with more than one in five adults suffering in some capacity. I say this not to be a downer, but to provide perspective as we consider the importance of treating ourselves well and seeking out the help we need.   Laura Smith is with us today talking about her new book, Holy Care for the Whole Self. After years of counseling, she's come to realize that the very techniques medical professionals suggest for improving our mental health are also the biblical principles we read about throughout Scripture. Things like gratitude, community, rest, and exercise.    If you're anything like me, it often feels like taking care of yourself is a luxury we don't have time for in this season. I'm praying today's show helps remind us that self-care is not a luxury, but a necessity, if we want to be our best selves to our friends and family.    Take a few minutes today to listen to my conversation with Laura, and also get a little info on the book I'm reading right now and the “secret place” I set up while my family was out of town this weekend.     P.S. Many of you have reached out about having me speak at your upcoming events, and I'm so honored. Yes, I do lots of speaking and would love to talk about foster care, parenting, marriage, the messiness of life, or anything else! Laura gives practical tips for supporting those struggling with mental health issues and the importance of prayer and community. Laura L. Smith has been searching her whole life for beauty. Not in the world—there's plenty of that—in the crimson of a cardinal's feather, in the sound of waves crashing along a shore, in the melody of a Beatles' ballad, or in a Chagall stained glass window. The world is filled with beauty, but for her that was another story. It took her years to discover her true beauty, to fully grasp she is made in the image of her Creator, and therefore, she is beautiful. The incredible thing is…so are you. You were marvelously made by God to inspire awe. No matter what the world tries to tell you, no matter what you try to tell yourself. No one can rob you of the incredible true identity God instilled in you.
