SEPTEMBER 22, 2024 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST REV. KENDRA BALLIET JIM ROSS, ORGANIST Prelude - Carillon and Elevation-L. Boellmann Welcome *Call to Worship Leader: Beloved, the voice of Wisdom calls to us from the street corner, the grocery store aisle, the noisy dinner table, and the quiet places of our hearts. Will you listen? All: Yes, with God’s help, we will listen! Leader: Wisdom calls to us with hard truths, showing us where we’ve strayed in our hearts and as a community and urging us back onto God’s path. Will you follow? All: Yes, with God’s help, we will follow! Leader: Wisdom’s call persists through the twists and turns, the rough patches, the barely discernible paths forward, and the moments we feel completely lost. Will you hold onto Wisdom wherever she takes you? All: Yes, with God’s help, we will hold onto Wisdom! Leader: Then Beloved, let us worship God together as we cling to wisdom on our journey along the path of salvation paved with God’s love. All: Yes! Let us worship God together! Amen. *Opening Hymn - “God of Grace and God of Glory” #577 *Opening Prayer We long for wisdom, O Lord, but prefer that it be our own. We turn away from the ideas of others and ignore the possibility and promise that come from life together with you. Most of all, we drown out your gift of Wisdom as she seeks to get our attention, for we believe that we know better or would prefer to decide where we make her welcome. Forgive us, loving God. Bring an end to the self-righteousness that ignores you, and awaken us anew to the Wisdom that comes only from you. Show us how to walk in your ways and listen to your promise each and every day. In the name of the great Servant, even Jesus Christ. Amen. Canticle of Wisdom #112 (Response 2) Gloria Patri Children's Chat Music Ministry and Offertory - Meditation on "How Great Thou Art"-Arr. John Carter Doxology and Prayer of Gratitude Scripture - James 3:1-12 Sermon: “Unbridled” Joys/Concerns Hymn - "Alleluia" #186 Pastoral Prayer/Lord's Prayer Closing Hymn - “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling” #348 Action Steps & Benediction Postlude - "Postlude"-Leon Boellmann The flowers on the altar today are given in loving memory of the birthday of Ellen Nickell and the anniversary of Pat Nickell's death by their daughter Jane Ellen Nickell. Can you remember the most hurtful things people have ever said to you? I can quote them perfectly. I remember many, where I was, who said it, their exact words, and how I felt, decades later I can remember every detail. Some of these things were 20, 30, 40 years ago. Isn’t it amazing how easily we can remember these things? I am 56 years old, and some of these moments still run around like ghosts of discouragement in my head. What about the opposite? Can you remember what quite literally is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? What is it about words? Why do they have such a massive impact on us? Have you ever hurt someone with your words? Has your tongue ever exposed you as a hypocrite? Have your words cut someone like a knife in the past. In that moment, when you knew your words caused the pain you wanted them to cause… did you enjoy it? And long after we forget what we said, our words linger, and our victim remembers them each time reopening that wound. Have you said really nice things to those in your church family & with the same mouth said hurtful things? All of us have used our tongue this way, as both a blessing and a curse. Isn’t that messed up? It’s so hypocritical! Even when we say something nice, is it nice? Or are we deceiving & manipulating others to get what we want? Do you trust your mouth? Do you even know how many times its caused damage? Every mouth is a problem right?
If you were asked the question, "Who is the world's smallest troublemaker?," what would you say? Would your response be something like, "my little brother," "my cat," or even "my 4'10" great aunt"? What if I told you that the world's smallest troublemaker lives within you? (You gasping..."Say what...?") In today's teaching, Pastor Ben describes the versatility of the tongue, in how it has the power to: 1. Direct 2. Destroy 3. Delight So how are you flexing your muscle? Are you allowing it to be the world's smallest trouble maker, or are you allowing it to share love with others and to glorify Jesus? God knows, as do the people who hear how you flex your tongue. The Bible places a major emphasis on the power of words both to help and to destroy. James tells us our words should be holy, but he also tells us no man can tame the tongue. We will be judged by every word we have spoken. That is the dilemma. What are we to do about it?

Taming the Tongue
Well, Shut My Mouth!
Throughout his letter, James focuses on three tests of faith: how we talk, how we live, and how we serve others. In James 3:1-2, he turns his full focus on controlling our tongues. Of all the ways in which we need discipline and self-control, we need none so much as in watching our words.

The Tongue can be an amazing thing for praise, worship, affirmation, and power…but it also can be poison, hurtful, poison, destructive… James outlines the power of the tongue and how as followers of Jesus we have an INCREDIBLE tool at our disposal, so let's learn how to use it the way God intended.
In today’s passage, the longest continuous treatment in Scripture about our speech, we learn that in the great spiritual war into which we’ve been drawn we are either advancing the purposes of the Kingdom of God or the purposes of Hell. Join us as we learn the great power and potential of our speech, and why we must exert great control over our mouths.
The Bible says life and death are in the power of the tongue. With the tongue we can pronounce a blessing or a curse upon ourselves and others. Relationships and long term careers have ended because of words that were better left unspoken. How often has your mouth gotten you into trouble? If you’re tired of tasting “shoe leather” then this series is for you. We’re going to learn about the power of the tongue and how to use it for good. Join Pastor Mark A. Stroud in the series entitled, “Watch Your Mouth”.
