“When every word counts, there's no room for mistakes.”Meet Alexandra Kaplan, the CEO & Founder of Kaplan Interpreting Services, a powerhouse in the world of interpretation. A Spanish Court-Certified Interpreter with a passion for making sure that language is never a barrier to important conversations. With over 17 years of experience, Alexandra's journey has been one of precision, impact, and unmatched expertise—working with world leaders, top-tier legal and medical professionals, and businesses that understand the power of clear communication.Kaplan Interpreting Services wasn't just born out of necessity—it was born out of a deep-rooted belief that every person, regardless of language, deserves to be heard. Alexandra's path began interpreting in medical offices and courtrooms, but as demand for her services skyrocketed, she saw a troubling trend: agencies hiring untrained bilinguals instead of certified professionals. The consequences of this could be devastating, especially in legal or medical contexts. In 2017, Alexandra made it her mission to change this—creating Kaplan Interpreting Services as a beacon of quality, accuracy, and integrity. By building a network of top-tier linguists who share her commitment to excellence, she ensured that her clients would never have to worry about losing something in translation. Today, Kaplan Interpreting Services is trusted by law firms, hospitals, government agencies, and businesses that understand the importance of precision.Born in Dallas, Texas, Alexandra's life was a melting pot of cultures. Her father spoke Italian, her mother Arabic, and by the time she was two, they moved to Venezuela, where Spanish became her first language. It wasn't long before she added English to her linguistic repertoire, and later earned a Master's in Healthcare Administration. Yet, no matter how many degrees she earned, her heart always called her back to what she loved most: helping people bridge language gaps. From interpreting in hospitals to becoming a court-certified interpreter, Alexandra's journey took off when she realized that her workload was too much to handle on her own. So, she began connecting top-notch professionals with clients who needed nothing short of perfection. And that's how Kaplan Interpreting Services was born—a company rooted in excellence and built on relationships. One of the most surreal moments of Alexandra's career was interpreting a historic phone call between Pope Francis and President-elect Joe Biden—the first time a Catholic U.S. President had spoken directly to the Pope since JFK. But it's not just these high-profile events that bring her joy; it's the small, life-changing moments. Like the time Alexandra stopped an immigrant mother from signing a legal document that would have jeopardized her asylum case—all because she didn't fully understand the language. That single act changed the course of a life—and that's why Alexandra does what she does. When it comes to interpretation, not all services are created equal. At Kaplan Interpreting Services, there's no room for guesswork. Here's what sets them apart:Certified Professionals: Only court-certified interpreters with specialization in legal, medical, and business fields are part of the team.Precision in Translation: It's not just about translating words—it's about translating meaning, intent, and cultural context.Risk Prevention: Kaplan Interpreting Services helps prevent legal and medical disasters caused by inaccurate interpretations.Industry Expertise: Each client is matched with an interpreter who knows their industry inside and out.No Room for Mistakes: Because every word counts.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 25th of April, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Malachi 2:7:“For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge,And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.”Then we go to the Book of Galatians 4:14 in the New Testament:“And my trial (this is Paul speaking) which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.” Do you know the power there is in a spoken word, positive or even negative? If you go into the jungle and find a shaman, a witch doctor, and if he speaks a curse over the people, over a particular person, that man will go and sit under a tree and literally die because a curse has been spoken over his life, that is if he does not know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. We need to be so careful what we say. You and I are representing the risen Lord Jesus Christ, therefore our opinion does not count, the only thing that counts when you are giving somebody advice, is what the Word of God says about the situation. I have just read a letter which concerned me a lot, written by a final year student, studying for a B.Com Degree. She told me in the letter, that she has been diagnosed with some medical condition which is hampering her studies, and I could hear that she was very stressed out. I want to tell you, that letter was so beautifully written and I could hear that it was written by an extremely intelligent young lady. But the diagnosis she got was that basically she was not going to make it. I spoke against it, I have prayed against it, and I have told her that I am looking forward to when she receives her degree. I will not listen to the lies, negative words of the devil, spoken over people, and you shouldn't either. We need to encourage people always in love but they need to hear the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Today, let your words be very carefully spoken and make sure that you are only talking things that the Lord, Himself, would say. Paul said to the people, “You treat me even like an angel or like the Lord Jesus, Himself“, and we need to do exactly the same.Jesus bless you and go and speak life over people, not death,Goodbye.

Proverbs 12:8-14 highlights our words' profound impact on our lives and those around us. Words can build up or tear down, to bring healing or harm. This passage contrasts the speech of the wise, which leads to blessing and security, with the reckless words of the foolish, which bring destruction. A person of integrity speaks truth and is established, while deceitful words lead to ruin. As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded of the responsibility we have to use our words wisely, speaking with kindness, honesty, and wisdom so that our speech reflects the character of Christ.

In the next few weeks, we are digging into our faith more deeply. Last week we kicked off a brand-new project called the “Legacy of Faith” series. I've hand-picked people I respect most for each topic, so I'd love it if you invite a friend to join you, and let's grow to be more like Christ together. I don't know what your experience looked like, but for a lot of us middle school sucked. The proof of that will come out in some stories today. But it's also a pivotal time of faith formation. Today Caroline and I talk about what it looks like to talk TO middle schoolers and not down at them. We remember what it felt like to be in middle school. We share ideas for how to start good conversations and what questions end up being effective when leading a small group. We also talk about how easy it was to say really mean things about other people in order to gain social currency. Have you ever left a doctor's appointment feeling more defeated than when you arrived? Perhaps a diagnosis felt like a life sentence, or a well-meaning comment planted a seed of fear that lingered for months. This isn't just bad bedside manner; it's a phenomenon I call “medical hexing.” It's the subtle, and sometimes not-so-subtle, way that language in medical settings can disempower us, shaping our beliefs and even our health outcomes. Today, we're diving deep into the power of words in medicine – how they can both heal and profoundly harm. In this episode I give you the down-low on:The Concept of Medical Hexing: How negative language and disempowering beliefs, often unintentionally, can act as a "medical hex," influencing our health beyond just our physical symptoms. The Nocebo Effect's Reality: This isn't just "woo-woo." The "evil twin" of the placebo effect, has a neurobiological basis, demonstrating how negative expectations can directly impact our physiology.Words as Physiological Triggers: The language used by healthcare providers directly impacts our brain and body, triggering stress responses, altering hormone levels, and even influencing our immune systems. The Power Imbalance: The traditional doctor-patient power dynamic can amplify the nocebo effect, making us more susceptible to negative suggestions and limiting our ability to advocate for ourselves.Reclaiming Your Agency: It's crucial to recognize your own expertise in your body and health, to question negative prognoses, and to seek out providers who foster trust and empowerment. The Body's Innate Healing Capacity: We must shift away from a disease-focused model and recognize the body's remarkable ability to heal, a capacity that can be enhanced or diminished by our beliefs. For a deeper dive into advocating for yourself within the medical system, be sure to read my book, "Hormone Intelligence." It includes a full chapter dedicated to empowering you to get the supportive, respectful healthcare you deserve.
