Our words can inform, injure, or inspire, and the way we use them reveals the maturity of our hearts.Because words are so powerful, Scripture calls us not just to avoid harmful speech, but to intentionally use our words to build others up. In a world filled with negativity, criticism, and discouragement, God invites His people to speak life — words that heal, encourage, and strengthen. The Bible describes gracious words as a fountain of life, a tree of healing, and honey to the soul.This message challenges us to move beyond careless speech and become intentional encouragers — at home, in relationships, at work, and in the church. We look at the example of Barnabas, known as the “Son of Encouragement,” and see how encouragement is not a lesser gift but a deeply needed one that strengthens communities and reflects the heart of Jesus.But the power of words doesn't stop with what we say to others. Scripture also teaches us to speak truth to ourselves — reminding our hearts who God is, who we are in Christ, and how to trust Him even when life feels uncertain. However, brethren, I could not talk to you as to spiritual [men], but as to nonspiritual [men of the flesh, in whom the carnal nature predominates], as to mere infants [in the new life] in Christ [[a]unable to talk yet!] 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not yet strong enough [to be ready for it]; but even yet you are not strong enough [to be ready for it], 3 For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]. For as long as [there are] envying and jealousy and wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual and of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a human standard and like mere (unchanged) men? 4 For when one says, I belong to Paul, and another, I belong to Apollos, are you not [proving yourselves] ordinary (unchanged) men? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Ministering servants [not heads of parties] through whom you believed, even as the Lord appointed to each his task: 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God [all the while] was making it grow and [He] gave the increase. 7 So neither he who plants is anything nor he who waters, but [only] God Who makes it grow and become greater. 8 He who plants and he who waters are equal (one in aim, of the same importance and esteem), yet each shall receive his own reward (wages), according to his own labor. 9 For we are fellow workmen (joint promoters, laborers together) with and for God; you are God's [b]garden and vineyard and field under cultivation, [you are] God's building. 10 According to the grace (the special endowment for my task) of God bestowed on me, like a skillful architect and master builder I laid [the] foundation, and now another [man] is building upon it. But let each [man] be careful how he builds upon it, 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is [already] laid, which is Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). 12 But if anyone builds upon the Foundation, whether it be with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 The work of each [one] will become [plainly, openly] known (shown for what it is); for the day [of Christ] will disclose and declare it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test and critically appraise the character and worth of the work each person has done. 14 If the work which any person has built on this Foundation [any product of his efforts whatever] survives [this test], he will get his reward. 15 But if any person's work is burned up [under the test], he will suffer the loss [of it all, losing his reward], though he himself will be saved, but only as [one who has passed] through fire. 16 Do you not discern and understand that you [the whole church at Corinth] are God's temple (His sanctuary), and that God's Spirit has His permanent dwelling in you [to be at home in you, [c]collectively as a church and also individually]? 17 If anyone [d]does hurt to God's temple or corrupts it [[e]with false doctrines] or destroys it, God will [f]do hurt to him and bring him to the corruption of death and destroy him. For the temple of God is holy (sacred to Him) and that [temple] you [[g]the believing church and its individual believers] are. 18 Let no person deceive himself. If anyone among you supposes that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool [let him discard his worldly discernment and recognize himself as dull, stupid, and foolish, without true learning and scholarship], that he may become [really] wise. 19 For this world's wisdom is foolishness (absurdity and stupidity) with God, for it is written, He lays hold of the wise in their [own] craftiness;

James 3 reveals the incredible power of our words and the responsibility that comes with speaking. Just as a small bit controls a massive horse and a tiny rudder steers enormous ships, our tongue—though small—directs the entire course of our lives. Words can destroy relationships like a spark ignites a forest fire, yet they can also be a fountain of life that builds others up. While humans can tame wild animals, we cannot tame our tongues without God's help. Our speech should be characterized by four life-giving qualities: Loving, Intentional, Factual, and Edifying. The choice is ours—will our words bring life or destruction?

Proverbs 18 explores how we navigate relationships, communication, and spiritual maturity. At its core, this chapter confronts the power of our words and the posture of our hearts. It reminds us that isolation runs against God's design. From the beginning, God declared it was not good for humanity to be alone. When we withdraw from community, we often seek only our own desires and resist wise counsel.The chapter contrasts foolish and wise hearts. A fool speaks without listening and has no desire to understand—only to express opinions. The wise person seeks understanding before responding. Proverbs 18 also delivers one of Scripture's most sobering truths: death and life are in the power of the tongue. Words can destroy or restore, divide or unify. In a digital age where words feel disposable, this wisdom calls us to slow down, listen carefully, and speak with intention. True security is not found in wealth or self-sufficiency, but in the Lord, our strong tower. The chapter closes by affirming God's design for companionship, reminding us that we were created for relationship, not isolation.I. Foolish Heart vs. Wise Heart (vv. 1–2)Isolation is unhealthy and unbiblical. It often grows from fear of vulnerability or correction and makes us resistant to counsel. A foolish heart loves talking more than listening, while wisdom requires humility—the ability to admit wrong and seek understanding.II. The Power of Words (vv. 4–8, 20–21)Words can refresh like a bubbling brook or wound deeply. Foolish speech invites conflict, ruins relationships, and spreads gossip that sinks deep into the heart. False Security vs. True Refuge (vv. 10–11)The name of the Lord is a strong tower and true refuge. Wealth and success can feel secure but are ultimately fragile. Wise stewardship matters, but our trust must rest in God alone.IV. Pride vs. Humility (v. 12)Pride leads to downfall, while humility prepares the way for honor. A teachable spirit keeps us growing, even in leadership.V. Wisdom in Listening (vv. 13, 15, 17)Answering before listening brings shame. The wise seek knowledge and listen fully, recognizing that the first story heard is not always the full truth.VI. Crushed Spirits & the Need for Healing (vv. 14, 19)A crushed spirit is harder to bear than physical sickness. Careless words can cause deep offense and long-lasting damage. Healing often requires patience, repentance, and intentional reconciliation.VII. God's Design for Companionship (vv. 22, 24)Marriage and deep friendship are gifts from God. Many shallow relationships can still lead to ruin, but one faithful friend brings strength. A Christmas Eve sermon on the power of words, the incarnation of God's Word in Jesus, and how peace, hope, joy, and love shape the way we speak and live in a divided world.

This morning we analyze the dramatic moment of Yosef revealing himself to his brothers, and see, with the help of Rabbi Avraham Pam and Rabbi Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi, the momentous power in the simple words Yosef speaks. First, we share the heroism of the last remaining hostage's body in Gaza, Ran Gvili, and pray for his quick return home for burial. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation. We take great pleasure in welcoming everyone with a warm smile, while sharing inspiration through prayer, study, and friendship.
