Please enjoy this encore of Career Notes. Kayla Williams, CISO of Devo, sits down to share her story, from graduating with a finance degree to rising to where she is now. She quickly learned that finance was not for her and changed paths, working towards gaining an information security certificate. From there she was able to excel and was offered the opportunity to move to England which changed her life. Working in her new role, she really enjoys thriving with her team. She says "We really try to be the department of no problem versus the department of no." She mentions how her and her team work on a day to day basis together solving issues and yet she says not everything related to cybersecurity needs to be a fire drill. You launched the experiments. You spent the budget. And now leadership wants answers. And suddenly every QBR feels like a fire drill. This is Stage 2 of the revenue leader's transformation—the moment when activity is high, effort is real, but impact is frustratingly hard to prove. You're working harder than ever, yet you can't confidently tie what your team is doing to pipeline, revenue, or real ROI.This episode is part two of a five-part series exploring the journey B2B revenue leaders go through as they move from reactive execution to full revenue visibility and executive-level confidence. Each stage represents a breaking point, where leaders either confront the real problem or stay stuck explaining away the same issues quarter after quarter. In this episode, we unpack Stage 2: The QBR Fire Drill—the phase where credibility, confidence, and career momentum are quietly put at risk. You're likely in Stage 2 if you've ever said, “Board decks take days to build and still don't tell a clean story.”What We Cover in This Episode:Why QBRs become fire drills and what that reveals about your data foundationThe hidden cost of stitching together spreadsheets, slide decks, and conflicting reportsHow legacy GTM data models quietly destroy credibility at the executive levelThe most common data architecture flaw preventing revenue visibility (and why it's so easy to miss)The moment leaders realize they can't survive another quarter operating this wayWhat it takes to shift from lagging, backward-looking metrics to forward-looking visibilityThis stage forces a hard reckoning. Not just with your systems, but with your willingness to challenge the status quo, speak uncomfortable truths, and admit that the current way of measuring GTM is no longer good enough.
In this meeting, TJ and Lucas discussed a recent fire incident at a nearby bar and the importance of having business insurance, which TJ confirmed was in place for his shop. They reviewed their Thanksgiving holiday plans and Black Friday sales strategy, noting the success of their first-year discount promotion. The conversation then shifted to manufacturing topics, including Haas's equipment expansion, tool storage solutions, and various prototyping methods for knife-making, with particular focus on design processes, bevel grinding fixtures, and the importance of documentation and revision control in their work.
Everyone loves a "we closed" post… but nobody talks about what actually happens next. Year one of operations is the most chaotic, most demanding, and least "passive" part of multifamily real estate — and most people have no idea what they're stepping into. In this episode, I break down the real work behind owning and operating apartments. Year one is where the property starts talking to you. Tenants, lenders, partners, vendors — everyone needs something. Problems you never saw in due diligence suddenly show up. Bills spike. Delinquency hits. Contractors ghost you. Utilities jump. And every weakness in your business plan gets exposed instantly. This is the part Instagram never shows. In this episode, we cover: – Why year one feels like a constant fire drill – The truth about older buildings and hidden issues – Delinquency, turnover, and the residents you "inherit" – The vendor and contractor chaos nobody warns you about – Cash flow pressure, tax deadlines, and insurance headaches – Weekly operator habits that keep a deal alive – Why year one determines the success of the entire hold period – What real operators do when the pain hits If you're in year one right now, you're not crazy — you're becoming an operator. If you're thinking about becoming a GP, listen with both ears open. And if you're an LP, this is why operators get paid what they get paid. Want tools, templates, or coaching to learn this game for real?

As we head into fall, we take the opportunity to run a financial "fire drill"—not because we expect a crisis, but because we know volatility is inevitable. This episode is all about preparation: emotionally and strategically. Ed Lambert, Alex Cabot, and Jag kick things off with some seasonal banter, but quickly dive into why fall is a natural time to reassess our portfolios and our mindset around investing.Ed begins by reminding us that even in strong years, the market doesn't move in a straight line. The S&P 500 typically sees multiple 5% dips annually and about a 10% correction every year or two. But those drops aren't signs of failure—they're part of the process. He walks us through some of the scariest moments of the last 15 years—like the 2011 debt ceiling crisis, the COVID crash of 2020, and the recent sharp drop in April 2025—highlighting how each time, the market rebounded. The key, he says, is staying the course and not reacting emotionally. Emotional decisions—especially ones made in fear—almost always lead to poor outcomes. We focus heavily on the idea that emotional preparation is just as important as strategic allocation. Ed makes the point that volatility is the price of admission for long-term growth. He urges listeners to “zoom out” and look at the long-term trajectory of the market, where short-term declines barely register. Since 1980, despite multiple downturns, the market has averaged nearly 10% returns annually.Alex then picks up the second half of the fire drill analogy—portfolio preparation. He compares asset allocation to a smoke detector: you want it functioning before there's smoke. He explains that the right asset mix comes from evaluating three factors—your goals, your timeframe, and your risk tolerance. Importantly, risk tolerance has both a financial and emotional component, and the two don't always align. He gives practical examples for how these factors influence portfolio design—contrasting a 25-year-old saving for retirement with someone needing cash in six months for a car purchase. He also stresses the need to regularly rebalance portfolios. Just like a smoke detector can get out of sync, so can an asset allocation if left unattended. Ignoring this can lead to a portfolio that doesn't reflect your needs or goals. Whether it's a 5% dip or a 25% drawdown, a well-built and actively managed allocation keeps investors steady. Alex closes with an important reminder: every downturn in history has ended in recovery. The question isn't if volatility will come, but when—and how prepared we'll be.Have you ever had a smoke detector battery die in the middle of the night? We swap stories about that to cement our analogy. You can always email Alex and Ed at info@birchrunfinancial.com or give them a call at 484-395-2190.Or visit them on the web at https://www.birchrunfinancial.com/Alex and Ed's Book: Mastering The Money Mind: https://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Money-Mind-Thinking-Personal/dp/1544530536 Any opinions are those of Ed Lambert Alex Cabot, financial advisors, RJFS, and Jon Gay, and not necessarily those of RJFS or Raymond James. International investing involves special risks, including currency fluctuations, differing financial accounting standards, and possible political and economic volatility. Investing in small cap stocks generally involves greater risks, and therefore, may not be appropriate for every investor.
