"The Warning Lights Part 2" addresses the spiritual dangers of retaliation, holding grudges, and neglecting essential practices such as serving, praying, and fasting.
These verses in the Sermon on the Mount are among the most powerful yet most resented of all moral teachings. Jesus’ message of non-retaliation and active love toward enemies seems unrealistic and impossible in our hate-filled world. But this way of Jesus is how the kingdom of heaven breaks into the world’s cycle of evil and overcomes it for good, and is itself the very character of God.
Pastor Cindy Jones joins us this week as we take a look at the end of Matthew 5 and how we can resist evil.

In this moment in our nation and the world, we all feel the burden of being the Church in times of turmoil and unrest. Special guest, Walt Webb shares how we can move forward and be the Church and the change the world needs.

Matthew 5:38-48 (NRSV) 38 ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. 43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Believe it or not, not everyone will always like you. all of us at some point will have people that God places in our life to be sandpaper to knock off our rough edges. Sermon Notes @ http://bible.com/events/6501142

The action verb for this week is LOVE. According to Jesus we must even love our enemies. Is this a realistic command? If so, how can we do it?

This weekend, we're going to be looking at what Jesus said about taking revenge (or not), and loving our enemies. This is very intense, high level teaching. It seems almost impossible for us to do. But as we'll see, there is a way to do it, and an important freedom that it offers.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Later in His message, Jesus gives more detail to what peace making is about. Making peace is not passive and it’s not the same as just keeping the peace. Jesus calls for an active response to evil, persecution, and hate. However, that response is not revenge or retaliation. In our message this week we’ll learn how to wage peace like the sun shines and the rain falls.

This final “Radical” statement of the Master Teacher can be constructively applied as not holding a grudge against any person, even those who wronged you terribly. A “grudge” is a persistent feeling of ill will; or a deep-seated resentment resulting from a past insult or injury; unwilling to grant forgiveness or allow a relationship. The Lord calls us to do what is humanly impossible but divinely possible by the Living Christ Who abides in us. Do not try to vindicate yourself (Don’t be a victim!) – Matthew 5:43 “Ye have heard that it hath been said…” (Leviticus 19:18, Deuteronomy 23:3-6) Accept the absolute authority and example of Jesus Christ over your life. – Matthew 5:44, John 13:13-17 “But I say unto you….” Remember how good God is to you and to all by His universal graces – Matthew 5:45, Psalm 8:1 “The children of your Father…He makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good.” Don’t you want to be more than average, common ordinary? – Matthew 5:46-47 “What do ye do more than others?” Press onto His goal for your life. Leave your past and your grudges at the foot of the cross. – Matthew 5:48 Our Master Teacher Saviour and Lord modeled His message to us when He shed His blood and died at Calvary for our sins. His first words as the nails went into His hands and feet were, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”
