In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica Levinson unpacks a significant federal court decision blocking the Trump administration from withholding or conditioning federal funds to UCLA in exchange for major campus policy changes. The discussion covers the court's reasoning under the Administrative Procedures Act, the First and 10th Amendments, and why the judge deemed the administration's actions coercive. Join us for a breakdown of this breaking legal news and its broader implications for university autonomy. Here are three key takeaways from the episode:Federal Funding Leverage Challenged: A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump administration from freezing, terminating, or conditioning UC research funds—pointing out that the administration's approach may violate legal requirements, including the Administrative Procedures Act, the First Amendment, and the Tenth Amendment.Academic Freedom & Speech Protected: The court found that forcing changes to speech policies, DEI efforts, gender healthcare, protest rules, and admissions could unlawfully coerce universities and chill free speech, especially among public university faculty and students.States' Rights and Spending Clause Limits: The judge ruled that federal conditions on funding can't be so extreme they essentially take away states' ability to decide their own policies—a “gun to the head” tactic that threatens economic stability and state sovereignty.Follow Our Host: @LevinsonJessica

Today's Headlines: The internet is still digging through the 20,000 Epstein estate documents, but the big takeaways so far: Trump and Epstein were apparently still in contact during Trump's first term, Epstein seemed to know Trump's flight schedule, and he even told journalist Michael Wolff he had the dirt to “take Trump down,” including alleged details about Trump's finances and money laundering for a Russian oligarch. Meanwhile, new NYT reporting revisits the Matt Gaetz scandal, centering on the 17-year-old girl he paid for sex. She describes how she was homeless, trying to afford braces, and ended up connected to Gaetz through his associate Joel Greenberg. She later became the key witness in the DOJ's trafficking investigation—which ultimately went nowhere. On the political-retaliation tour, the Trump administration just referred Democrat Eric Swalwell to the DOJ for possible mortgage and tax fraud, courtesy of Trump ally Bill Pulte (the 50-year-mortgage guy). And the DOJ is also probing former CIA Director John Brennan under a theory that he and Obama were part of a long-running “deep state” plot against Trump. Elsewhere, 1,000 Starbucks workers went on strike on Red Cup Day, and after 232 years, the U.S. Treasury is finally killing off the penny—because spending 3 cents to make 1 cent is just bad math. Comment on the Show by Sending Mark a Text Message. This episode is part of my initiative to provide access to important court decisions  impacting employees in an easy to understand conversational format using AI.  The speakers in the episode are AI generated and frankly sound great to listen to.  Enjoy!Headlines rarely explain how discrimination actually works; the paperwork does. We take you inside a sweeping class action against Novartis where plaintiffs alleged a nationwide pattern of gender bias driven less by explicit rules and more by subjective decisions about promotions, performance reviews, and discipline. As we unpack the filings, we surface the mechanics that matter: a management development program that functioned as a gate, shifting criteria that discounted strong results, assignment patterns that boosted some careers and stalled others, and a hostile culture that complaints allegedly failed to correct. We ground the big picture in human stories. Amy Velez's strong sales numbers met an MDP denial and rapid discipline after FMLA leave, while a male partner avoided similar consequences. Sonia Klinger's contested review hinged on a narrow sales window shaped by denied resources, followed by lost raises and stock options. Manel Heider Tabertka's national performance didn't translate into advancement access; a male peer's did. Michelle Williams described communications about advancement that quieted once she disclosed her pregnancy, plus a reduced raise processed during maternity leave without consent. Together, these narratives illustrate how subjective frameworks can override merit and reframe protected leave as a liability. We also examine the remedies sought: not just damages, but court-ordered structural change across promotions, transfers, training, evaluations, compensation, and discipline, monitored by an equality task force. That request raises a critical governance question for any large employer: when internal policies fail to prevent systemic bias, how far should external oversight go? Our takeaways center on building systems that stand up to scrutiny—clear advancement criteria, calibrated reviews, transparent metrics, and independent audits that close the gap between policy and practice. If this conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a colleague who cares about fair workplaces, and leave a review with your answer to one question: should courts mandate HR reform when companies don't fix it themselves? Sexual Assault Survivor Stories

Sexual Assault Survivor Stories Podcast with Dave Markel Guest: Anne Marie Hauben I'm honored to share this week's episode of The SASS Podcast with someone whose courage doesn't just echo across a microphone—it reverberates across decades of silence, retaliation, and survival: Anne Marie Hauben. Anne Marie isn't just a guest. She is a truth-teller, an advocate, and a woman who refused to let a lifetime of dismissal define her story. After more than 30 years of carrying the weight of an assault she endured at 18 years old, she decided she would not stay silent any longer. And in doing so, she carved out a path of empowerment for survivors everywhere who feel trapped between trauma and the societal forces that try to suffocate their truth. This conversation is raw, urgent, and profoundly human. Who Is Anne Marie Hauben? • She is a survivor of a 1990 sexual assault, perpetrated during a senior trip to Bermuda when she was 18 and extremely intoxicated. The reported perpetrator was Ward, a former city councilor in Melrose, Massachusetts. (AnneHauben.com) • Anne Marie endured decades of silence shaped by shame, traumatic memory, lack of parental safety, and the fear that telling the truth would bring more harm than healing. (Written testimony) • In 2016 and again in 2018, she privately confronted her perpetrator through personal messages seeking accountability, remorse, or even acknowledgment. Both attempts were ignored; the second resulted in her being blocked. (Testimony) • In 2023, when her perpetrator ran for city council, her trauma was violently retraumatized and shoved back into the light. The anxiety, fear, flashbacks, and PTSD symptoms became overwhelming, forcing her to grapple with her past in a public way to protect herself, her community, and other survivors. (Testimony) • She ultimately sought legal guidance and published a public statement so voters would know who they were electing. Instead of support, she faced a wave of defamation threats, intimidation, and a coordinated effort by community members to discredit her. (Testimony) • Today, she is a vocal survivor-advocate pushing for reform in defamation law, accountability in local government, protections for survivors, and cultural change around how we respond to sexual violence. (AnneHauben.com) • She uses her platform, Amplified Voice Healing, to speak openly about her story, help other survivors reclaim their voice, and educate the public about the patterns of retaliation, shame, and silence that protect perpetrators. (AnneHauben.com) Why I Asked Anne Marie to Be on the Show • Because I'm committed to giving survivors a place where they're believed, respected, and heard—and Anne Marie has spent her entire adulthood being silenced and attacked for speaking the truth. • Because her experience is a masterclass in how systems, communities, and defamation laws are weaponized against survivors who dare to speak out. • Because she embodies the intersection of trauma neuroscience, public accountability, and the lived experience of surviving both assault and decades of retaliation. • Because her voice is needed. For college students. For mothers. For anyone grappling with whether they're "allowed" to speak. For every survivor who worries they'll be called a liar, crazy, or unstable simply for telling the truth. • Because her story is not just her own. It is woven from the same cloth as Chanel Miller, E. Jean Carroll, Christine Blasey Ford, and every survivor whose truth confronted a powerful man shielded by convenience and denial. What We'll Explore in This Episode • The assault itself: what Anne remembers from that night in Bermuda, what trauma did to her memory, and what the aftermath looked like for an 18-year-old trying to survive without support. • The neuroscience of delayed disclosure: why trauma keeps victims silent for years or decades—and how shame, fear, and protective forgetting shape a survivor's timeline. • Retaliation, defamation threats, and silencing: how community members, friends of the perpetrator, and public officials weaponized intimidation against her to shut down her voice. • Rape culture in action: what happens when a small-town political ecosystem decides that a man's reputation is worth more than a woman's truth. • Healing, advocacy, and finding purpose: how Anne turned her pain into public testimony, activism, and a platform for educating others about accountability and survivor protection. My Personal Reflection I want to acknowledge Anne Marie's courage. What she carried for three decades would have broken many people. Yet she continues to speak out with clarity, strength, and conviction, not just for herself but for every survivor who has been told to stay quiet. Listening to Anne Marie share her story so openly, and hearing the resilience and emotional labor it took to put her truth into the public square, is proof that SASS is a platform is for victims and survivors to be able to further their pursuit of justice and the commitment to normalize the conversation. Anne Marie's experience is not just recounting a traumatic event—she's exposing the machinery that keeps perpetrators safe and survivors silent. I'm grateful Anne chose to trust me with her story. I'm grateful my listeners get to learn from her, feel with her, and rethink what accountability truly looks like. And I'm truly proud to have had her on this show. Audience Takeaway • No survivor owes anyone immediate disclosure. Trauma rewrites the rules of time. • Anne's experience is both a warning and a call to action. Rape culture is not theoretical—it's lived every day in the systems that dismissed and attacked her. • If you are a survivor: you're not alone. Your timeline is valid. Your truth is yours to tell when you are ready. • If you are part of a community, a school, a department, or a justice system: please pay attention. These patterns repeat everywhere. Silence is the abuser's best friend. • And if you've ever wondered why survivors take years to speak: this episode will change the way you think about trauma forever. Anne Marie, thank you for standing up, speaking out, and refusing to keep your pain quiet. And to our SASS listeners: brace yourselves. This episode is powerful, necessary, and is one of those important conversations I regularly bring to the podcast to help normalize the conversation about rape and sexual assault. SBF's Prison Plea: Political Retaliation or Crypto Crackdown?

Sam Bankman-Fried - Audio Biography

Sam Bankman-Fried BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Sam Bankman-Fried, the once high-flying founder of FTX now serving a 25-year sentence, has been back in the news in a very big way. Over the past few days, he has dominated headlines with a dramatic new narrative, claiming his 2022 arrest was orchestrated by the Biden administration as political retaliation for shifting his donations from Democrats to Republicans. According to him, the DOJ and SEC pounced on him shortly after he quietly donated tens of millions to GOP causes, alleging regulators were motivated by anti-crypto sentiment and worries about legislation he was slated to champion in Congress. He insists his arrest was timed just before he could testify before lawmakers and help steer a crucial crypto regulatory bill. Bankman-Fried relayed all of this in fiery posts on the social media platform GETTR, stating he cannot post directly from prison and instead dictates statements to a friend via monitored lines. These comments went viral, porting his story straight back into political and financial debate as reported by Benzinga and DLNews. His accusations added fuel to the ongoing uproar about how former SEC Chair Gary Gensler's government-issued phone was wiped—deleting messages from the very dates overlapping FTX's collapse, his arrest, and other landmark crypto enforcement actions. The Chief Inspector of the SEC confirmed the enterprise wipe was due to automated IT protocols, but conspiracy theories are swirling, with Bankman-Fried suggesting this lost trove contained vital evidence about the government's true motives. House Republicans have latched onto this story, demanding disclosures and transparency from regulators.Perhaps even more attention-grabbing is the whirlwind of speculation about a possible pardon. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer took to X to warn of a “massive and well-funded” campaign now lobbying Donald Trump to let SBF walk free. Loomer's allegations triggered fierce debate — some Republicans see it as the height of cynicism, while others mock the idea as Democratic deflection. Still, there's no hard evidence or official filing for a clemency push, and the Justice Department's list of 2025 pardon candidates does not mention Bankman-Fried. Prediction market Polymarket rates his chances at just three percent, underscoring the gap between social media drama and real political likelihood. This whole media storm coincides, perhaps not coincidentally, with a key November 3 hearing on his appeal.Through it all, Bankman-Fried has kept up a steady cadence of denial, framing himself as the ultimate political scapegoat while never wavering in his belief that FTX's failure was mismanagement — not fraud. His story remains a lightning rod, dividing crypto and political circles, and no doubt shaping his legacy as both a cautionary tale and, to some, a martyr.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Publisher Andy Pettigrew called out backroom deals and ran biting editorial cartoons, prompting the commissioners to strike back. Now, the fight has moved from the courthouse steps to federal court, raising a chilling First Amendment question: If politicians can punish a paper for speaking the truth, what local newsroom is safe?      Slam The Gavel Podcast welcomes Edyta (Edie) Hanna Basista. Edie is a civil rights advocate, trauma survivor, and pro se federal plaintiff in Basista & Palacios v. Batch, et al., a landmark constitutional lawsuit filed under 42 U.S.C. §§ 1983, 1985(3), and 1986, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.     The case names 25 defendants, including judges, elected officials, attorneys, police officers, former spouses, licensed therapists, and state-contracted service providers, for their roles in a coordinated pattern of constitutional violations. Edyta's parental access was severed without a finding of unfitness, without an evidentiary hearing, and without lawful adjudication. Sealed trauma records were unlawfully disclosed. Court access was obstructed through procedural manipulation. Judicial actors refused to recuse despite personal and political conflicts, and retaliation was used to silence her legal efforts.     This is not a custody matter, it is a federal civil rights case grounded in binding U.S. Supreme Court precedent and asserting violations of the First, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments, the Supremacy Clause, the ADA, and VAWA. The lawsuit exposes how courts and state-aligned professionals weaponized trauma, disability status, and indigency to deny her access to justice — and how that abuse was not accidental, but institutional.     Edyta Basista stands not only for herself, but for every parent, survivor, and disabled litigant who has been denied a fair hearing under law. Her case demands federal enforcement of constitutional rights where state systems have failed, and forces the question: Who protects the rights of the vulnerable when the courts become the violators? To Reach Edie Basista:  ehbasista@gmail.com and on Facebook: Edie Basista.Supportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com   https://ko-fi.com/maryannpetrihttps://www.zazzle.com/store/slam_the_gavel/about*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk.
