The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. We light the pink candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the birth of Jesus even as we rejoice in anticipation of the coming of the Messiah. While the secular world seeks to mimic Christmas joy in the things of this world, our Heavenly Father gives us the reason to rejoice. The reason for our rejoicing is not to be found in our circumstances but rather, it is to be found in the gracious heart of God.
Anxiety is not a fruit of the Spirit. Peace is. Peace should permeate every pore of the Christian's life.

This section of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount addresses a far too common problem among the citizens of the kingdom of Heaven. Not only do the lost and sinful suffer anxiety and worry about their lives, Christians too fall into the common problem of worry and anxiety. The words of Jesus make it clear that the control of anxiety and worry is the problem of a lack of faith. Anxiety often feels like a choking or strangling of the soul and what is at stake is the eternal state of faith and trust in our Lord rather than our own selves. The message from Christ today is to be HIS disciples in every aspect of one's life. To be a genuine Christian is to seek the kingdom and HIS righteousness above all else (Matthew 6:33). It means that Jesus is the treasure and joy of one's heart. Genuine Christians truly believe that their needs will be met. The security that God provides is greater than anything that the world can give us.

How do we, as Christians, involve our faith in our everyday lives? We must walk the walk in how we eat, drink, play, serve, parent, interact with others and yes-- drive, every day. In this sermon, Michael Moorhead uses the concept of the freeway, which we are all too familiar with, to explore the Christian concepts of prayer, patience and love and suggest how their application in our lives can lead to better lives, not only for us, but for those around us as well. This sermon is the sixth and final in the Neighborhood Church's Spring 2019 "Rules for the Road... of Faith" Sermon Series. Accompanying scripture passages are Philippians 4: 4-7 and 1 Corinthians 13: 4-13.
Do not be anxious...but in all things present your requests to God with thanksgiving and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus

God doesn't give you more than you can handle, right? Wait...does God give you bad stuff? And how do you handle life when it gets tough? Pastor Brenda takes on this popular saying that is not in the Bible, and offers a better response to suffering.
Philippians 4:4-7 includes a conditional promise from God, IF we will do this, THEN God will do that...

Jesus prayed before calling Lazarus from death to life and we are called from death to life as was Lazarus. The prayers of Jesus were of scripture, the language of prayer available to us from the Word by the Holy Spirit who aids our understanding. And more, Jesus prayed for us and the Spirit prays for us and in these things, God has freed us to live daily even in our darkest times.
