How can a career in architecture be more than a single path, but a foundation for a multifaceted professional life? This week, we welcome back Mikael Avery, a designer, educator, and healthcare professional, for a deep dive into his own remarkable journey. Mikael's story is one of continuous exploration, starting with a degree in landscape architecture before moving through urban design, a traditional architectural apprenticeship, and a solo digital fabrication practice. Driven by a desire for a larger impact, he then made a significant pivot, earning a master's degree in occupational therapy to learn about healthcare from the inside out. Today, his work weaves all these threads together as a senior lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, a collaborator with design firms, and the co-leader of a medical device startup.Throughout the conversation, Mikael explains how he sees these varied roles not as separate careers, but as different facets of one cohesive professional identity: that of a designer and educator. He shares invaluable insights into the cross-pollination of skills between fields, how his designer's mindset informs his work in healthcare, and how the crucial soft skills learned in occupational therapy, like building instant rapport with clients, are vital for architects. His ultimate hope for the profession is a return to its fundamental purpose."Architecture is a service profession. Because our work is in service of the people. And so I think the more students who graduate and really appreciate that service aspect of architecture and design, I think the more in demand designers will be." - Mikael AveryThis episode concludes with a powerful reframing of what a career can be. Mikael's journey is a testament to seeing a career not as a linear path to be followed, but as a continuous development propelled by curiosity and a desire to learn. He offers actionable advice for anyone looking to forge their own way: start with confidence in your design skills, be curious, learn the language of other industries, and build a network to create opportunities. His story is a compelling case for how a commitment to service can unlock the true value of design in any field.Guest:Mikael Avery is a designer, educator, maker, and healthcare professional working at the intersection of architecture, product design, and health. Alongside his teaching, he advises healthcare systems, collaborates with design firms like Fifteen, and co-leads a medical device startup, embodying a truly interdisciplinary approach to practice. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if:✅ You are exploring a non-linear career and want to see how different interests can form a cohesive whole. ✅ You want to understand how skills from other industries, like healthcare, can benefit architectural practice.✅ You are a student or young professional seeking advice on how to forge your own unique career path. ✅ You believe in the power of design to have a larger social impact beyond the building. ✅ You are inspired by the idea of architecture as a service profession and want to explore what that means.
This week we're diving into the disciplines of being an intentional disciple-maker. Just like Paul discipled Timothy, he connected with him both personally and culturally, using the examples of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. We are called to disciple others, no matter their background or past mistakes, because of the promise of victory, the vision of winning, and the hope of a harvest. Disciple-making is always worthwhile when our goal is to glorify God, win people to Christ, and one day live eternally with Him. Remember: no past experience is beyond redemption. The church grows when YOU share your story!
This week Marc teaches from Hebrews 12 about our Good Father who disciplines us. Marc clarifies that this discipline is not about spiritual practices, punishment, or consequences. Rather, the discipline is a spiritual condition that comes to form us into the image of Christ.Through discipline, we will be confronted by God in prayer, in reading Scripture, and through wise and godly friends. Marc encouraged us to find at least one person who will help us be faithful to Christ.
As driven individuals, many of us end up saying “yes” to everything: talks, podcasts, meetings, projects, etc. We chase impact while losing sight of what really matters. In this episode, Gino and Rob unpack the cost of overcommitment and explore how to reclaim clarity, boundaries, and presence. Gino reflects on his own journey toward finding a “happy medium,” while Rob highlights the power of pausing for regular self-assessment. Together, they invite listeners to question the motivations behind their choices: Is this rooted in fear or love? Is it aligned with who I truly am? The conversation reveals how often we try to fill an invisible hole, only to realize there's nothing missing. Wholeness was there all along. By honoring our capacity and saying “no” to what doesn't serve us, we make space to mentor, to connect, and to truly shine. In this installment of RRP Trainer Chronicles, an OTTB on Tap Original Series, we catch up with returning trainer Chelsey O'Brien as her 2025 RRP Makeover journey takes shape. This year, Chelsey is retraining two very different OTTBs—each with their own story and style.✨ Peppy (JC name: The Pepsodent Show) has stepped into the hunter ring, showing the elegance Thoroughbreds can bring to the discipline. His second Makeover division is still undecided, but one thing is certain—he'll be available for adoption through Pastured Place after the competition, ready to shine in a new home. ✨ Fuzzy Wuzzy, her fiery mare “built like a French Bulldog,” is tackling barrels and ranch work—proving that OTTBs can excel in Western arenas just as much as English ones.Chelsey opens up about how she decided which disciplines fit each horse, the obstacles they've faced along the way, and how she balances her roles as a trainer, breeder, and mom. She also takes us behind the scenes at the Virginia Thoroughbred Association Yearling Futurity, where she proudly presented homebred colts and fillies just a year after foaling them out. With her philosophy of striving to be 1% better every day, and her belief that training is an art form, Chelsey shares one of her go-to OTTB training tips that listeners can put into practice. If you love stories of OTTB versatility, retraining insights, and the heart behind the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover, this episode is a must-listen.
In this Riff, Gino explores a truth we all face: we are either expanding or contracting. Expansion brings learning, progress, and momentum. Contraction, on the other hand, brings discomfort, doubt, and resistance. Each phase plays a role in our growth. Progress rarely moves in a straight line; it comes in cycles.Gino shares his own cycles of Shedding and Shining, reminding us that contraction does not mean we're broken... it means we're about to break through. Whether it's a business hitting a ceiling or an individual wrestling with change, the pattern is the same: expansion, contraction, evolution, revolution. Your job is to stay aware, trust the process, and look for the lesson. Because if you're committed to growth, another expansion is always around the corner. In this episode, Dr. Eggett unpacks the ongoing debate between goals and systems in leadership, drawing from his own high school wrestling experience to show how wanting to win isn't enough without the daily habits and preparation to back it up. Through powerful quotes from thinkers like James Clear and Josh Waitzkin, he highlights the strengths and shortcomings of each approach — goals give direction and emotional fuel, while systems provide the structure that makes progress sustainable.Dr. Eggett then ties these insights directly to dentistry, exploring how practice leaders can balance setting clear, trackable goals with building reliable systems that drive consistent results. Drawing from the 4 Disciplines of Execution, he explains how lead measures act as the true systems that carry a team toward long-term success. Whether you're looking to grow production, strengthen culture, or simply lead with more clarity, this episode offers practical perspective on how goals and systems work together to shape a leader's lasting impact.Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/matrika/funk-style - License code: KUYOIZCBFCF1FOMP https://uppbeat.io/t/roo-walker/bolt - License code: RS1AU6Y5DGD5A3H8. https://uppbeat.io/t/doug-organ/boogie-time License code: 5EUWDIFBWYHENXPQ

“For they {Earthly Parents} disciplined us for a short time . . . but he {God} disciplines us for our good, that we may share his {God's} holiness" (Hebrews 12:10) MESSAGE SUMMARY: The Lord disciplines his children; therefore, so should we. Our discipline can take many forms, for example: 1) teach children a lesson, even hard lessons; and 2) it is OK to take away children's privileges. The Lord's discipline is out of love; and our discipline, for our children, should, also, be out of our love. Nobody likes discipline -- we do not like it; our kids do not like it. However, discipline works to bring righteousness and peace, and discipline brings fruit to us and our children down the road. In Hebrews 12:7-10, the author of Hebrews succinctly describes the Biblical perspective regarding discipline: It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as {His} sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they {Earthly Parents} disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he {God} disciplines us for our good, that we may share his {God's} holiness.". In this episode of Paradigm Shifting Books, hosts Stephen and Britain Covey dive into The Four Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling — joined by Chris McChesney himself to share insights firsthand. Together, they break down how the book's core ideas of focusing on what really matters, tracking the right actions, using simple scoreboards, and sticking to regular check-ins can make a huge difference not just in business, but in everyday life, family routines, and even sports.Stephen and Britain point out something a lot of us feel: execution often falls apart because of human nature. But instead of just blaming ourselves, the fix is setting up systems that keep us on track. They share real, relatable examples, like how a sales team stayed motivated with a basic scoreboard or how NFL teams zoom in on just a few key plays to win big games. One big idea they keep coming back to is this: sometimes what seems like a “people problem” is actually a “system problem.” Britain talks about his time in the NFL and how practicing under pressure helped him stay cool when it really counted. Stephen shares how a weekly review habit helps him stay focused on what matters most. The episode is packed with practical takeaways, but one stands out. Rob and Gino explore how the people we attract, in both life and business, reflect the clarity (or confusion) within ourselves. When your values are vague, you draw in the wrong energy; but when you get clear on your True Self and core values, you become a magnet for those who truly align, and a filter for those who don't. Most wholesalers focus on finding deals — but overlook what it really takes to sell them. Will and Veronica Pritchett retired at 43 on rental income, and now buy most of their properties from wholesalers. They're giving you a rare look inside a buyer's mind—what makes them jump on a deal instantly, what makes them walk away, and why trust, timing, and relationships often matter more than flashy marketing. If you want to close more deals, keep your best buyers, and build a reputation that lasts, this is a perspective you can't afford to miss. Key Quotes:“Mass email blasts are just noise. Call me with the deal you know I'll love.”“We don't care if you make $5,000 or $50,000—if the deal works, we all win.”“The best wholesalers know our buy box, and they don't waste our time.”“Your reputation travels fast in this business. Think about the long game.”“Trust and relationships will get you repeat buyers every single time.” Mentioned in this episode:Carrot CRM — https://carrot.com/crmCarrot Summit — https://carrot.com/summitThe 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney — https://www.franklincovey.com/the-4-disciplinesLifeonaire by Steve Cook & Shaun McCloskey — https://lifeonaire.comGeorge Antone's The Wealthy Code — https://georgeantone.com ***Join us live, Thursdays at 11 AM Pacific for the Evergreen Marketing Live Q&A: https://www.facebook.com/groups/officialcarrotcommunity/***Need to grow as a leader? What happens when we choose to lead with love… and only love? In this heartfelt Riff, Gino explores the full power of love in both business and life. He shares how “putting the love in it” transformed his companies, his relationships, and his own leadership. Tough love counts too: honesty, boundaries, even firing someone can be loving when done from the heart. And the ultimate love? Loving yourself. When we do that, we stop chasing, stop fearing, and start vibrating higher. So put the love in it, even when it's hard to do. On this episode of Shed and Shine, Rob and Gino share a powerful shift in direction: the podcast is no longer just for driven entrepreneurs; it's for all driven people. That includes high performers, overachievers, and anyone striving for meaning, peace, and control in a fast-paced life. They realized that the struggles they've spoken about—identity, energy, the need to feel whole—aren't just entrepreneurial issues; they're human ones. After years of holding tight to a narrow focus, feedback from listeners sparked this expansion. On that note, Rob and Gino want to hear from you at info@the10disciplines.com and encourage you to pass this along to other driven souls. How we think about inclusivity in today's workforce has a lot to do with how we view diversity. In this episode of The Sourcing Hero podcast, Host Kelly Barner welcomes Andrés Tapia. Andrés is one of the authors of the book The 5 Disciplines of Inclusive Teams: Unlocking Collective Power to Achieve Breakthrough. Andrés was a Senior Client Partner at Korn Ferry for 12 years and now leads the Andrés Tapia strategy group. Andrés speaks about the power of inclusivity and the benefits of teams that continue to grow individually and collectively: Big picture ways to think about being inclusive in the modern workplace What it takes to go from a collection of talented people to a truly inclusive team How every team can become more inclusive than they already are Links: Andrés Tapia on LinkedIn

Have you ever considered that the key to leadership isn't just vision, but also preparation? Kevin sits down with Coach Matthew Mitchell to explore the role of preparation in leadership and in building winning teams. Matthew shares his five levels of preparation: casual, cursory, compliant, committed, and constant. He believes leaders need to reach levels 4 and 5, where thorough systems, discipline, and introspection take precedence. Using Coach John Wooden's approach, he explains that most preparation should focus on your systems, only delving deeply into the competitor's game when necessary, such as during critical “special situations.” Listen For 00:00 Introduction 00:36 Welcome to the podcast 01:06 About Kevin's book “Flexible Leadership” 01:33 Guest introduction: Coach Matthew Mitchell 02:27 Overview of Coach Mitchell's coaching career 03:44 How he got into coaching and writing 06:16 Why return to coaching now? 07:35 Focus of the book: preparation 08:32 Why preparation matters 10:23 Casino analogy: "the house always wins" 13:00 The five levels of preparation 17:01 Where organizations typically fall on the preparation spectrum 18:36 Peyton Manning's quote on preparation and work ethic 20:19 Attitude and effort: what we can control 22:17 Coaching insights that apply to business 24:22 The importance of identifying your “bread and butter” 25:03 Constant preparation and the power of systems 26:22 Preparing for strategy vs. reacting to the competition 30:27 Special situations in games and business 31:06 The danger of perfectionism vs. pursuit of excellence 32:11 What Coach Mitchell does for fun 33:03 What he's currently reading 34:39 Where to learn more about Coach Mitchell 35:24 Final thoughts and action steps for listeners 36:34 Closing remarks and next episode teaser Matthew's Story: Matthew Mitchell is the author of Ready to Win: How Great Leaders Succeed Through Preparation.
