Episode 583: Dr. David Perlmutter: Brain Health Expert: The Daily Habits That Protect Your Brain as You Age

Habits and Hustle

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2026 108:21

What if the health of your brain decades from now is being shaped by what you are doing today? We tend to think about Alzheimer's and cognitive decline as problems that show up later in life, once memory starts slipping or confusion becomes noticeable. But many of the factors associated with brain decline can begin much earlier. Blood sugar, insulin resistance, sleep, inflammation, muscle mass, exercise, social connection, oral health, and even the medications you regularly take may all influence the environment your brain is aging in. This matters because brain health gives you more areas to act on than most people realize. You can pay attention to metabolic markers before they become major problems, build and preserve muscle, protect your sleep, stay socially connected, take care of your oral microbiome, and understand which emerging therapies actually have evidence behind them. The earlier you start thinking about your brain this way, the more opportunity you have to influence how well it functions later. Dr. David Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist, six-time New York Times bestselling author, and internationally recognized expert in brain health, nutrition, and neurodegenerative disease. His latest book, Brain Defenders, explores microglia, the brain's immune cells, and how their function may influence conditions including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. His work focuses on giving people practical ways to protect brain health through metabolism, lifestyle, and emerging neuroscience. What's Discussed: (05:51) What research suggests about slowing or even improving cognitive decline in people already diagnosed with Alzheimer's through intensive lifestyle intervention. (10:47) Why Alzheimer's should not be viewed as purely genetic and how lifestyle and metabolic health can influence risk even when genetic predispositions are present. (12:19) How loneliness and social isolation may affect brain health through stress, cortisol, oxytocin, inflammation, and changes in the brain's immune cells. (20:50) Why the biological conditions associated with cognitive decline may begin in your 40s and 50s, decades before memory problems become obvious. (30:34) How exercise supports the brain through BDNF, irisin, and other chemicals released during muscle activity, and why both cardio and strength training matter. (38:00) Why restorative sleep is an active period for memory consolidation and brain recovery, and how fragmented sleep can undermine brain health even when you spend eight hours in bed. (1:04:34) What the science currently says about NAD, NR, NMN, and IV NAD for mitochondrial function, biological aging, and cognitive health. (1:12:04) How periodontal disease, the oral microbiome, and frequent use of certain antibacterial mouthwashes may affect nitric oxide, metabolism, and long-term brain health. (1:23:05) What emerging research says about GLP-1 drugs for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and why using or microdosing them specifically for brain protection is still ahead of the evidence. (1:33:25) Why homocysteine and fasting insulin are two blood markers worth paying attention to when assessing metabolic and long-term brain health.   Thank You to Our Sponsors! Drawing from his own journey of lifestyle creep, debt awareness, and building multiple income streams, Travis breaks down simple, practical habits anyone can adopt—no degree, big savings, or special skills required—to start moving their bank account in the right direction over the next 3–6 months. On this episode we talk about: Why checking your bank account balance daily changes your money awareness and urgency. How to delay purchases for at least an hour to avoid impulse spending and emotional decisions. Eating at home to reverse lifestyle creep and stop letting restaurant and delivery bills quietly drain your income. Going to monthly in‑person events so “the more hands you shake, the more money you make.” Changing your inputs (podcasts, YouTube, conversations) so your environment pushes you toward earning more. Top 3 Takeaways Daily money awareness—like checking your bank balance or using tools such as Rocket Money—keeps your real financial situation in front of you and creates the urgency to go earn more. Small habits like delaying purchases for an hour and eating at home can quietly free up thousands of dollars a month that you can redirect toward debt payoff and savings. Richer Soul, Life Beyond Money

What an 83-Year-Old's Daily Habits Reveal About Aging   Most people assume chronic disease is just a normal part of getting older. Michael Dorfman, an 83 year old health and nutrition coach, has spent the last 18 years proving otherwise, and he's still playing competitive pickleball to show for it. If you've ever wondered whether it's too late to change your trajectory, or whether the version of aging you've been told to expect is the only one available, this episode will reframe the question entirely.   In This Episode: Why chronic disease usually starts decades before it's diagnosed, not the year it shows up The friend's heart disease reversal that changed the direction of Michael's life and work Why doctors are trained for sick care, not health care, and what that means for your decisions What the Blue Zones research actually found in common across five unrelated places on earth Why fiber, not protein, is the real deficiency in most people's diets The daily practices Michael uses now: breathwork, intermittent fasting, cold and hot therapy, and movement over formal exercise What changed when Michael stopped judging his father, and what that taught him about everyone else   Key Insights: The body keeps a record long before symptoms appear. Type 2 diabetes in children and colon cancer in men under 50 are signs the timeline has shifted, not random bad luck. A surgeon's job is surgery. Lifestyle medicine is rarely part of the training, which means the responsibility for prevention sits with you, not your doctor. The Blue Zones populations didn't exercise in the way we think of it. Their environments simply required constant, ordinary movement. Letting go of judgment, of a parent, a stranger, a different point of view, was one of the latest and most valuable lessons of Michael's life.   About Michael Dorfman: Michael J. Dorfman is an 83-year-old certified Health & Nutrition Life Coach, investigative author, and thriving example of plant-based longevity. Based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, he has spent the last 17+ years living—and coaching—on how to age vibrantly without chronic disease. Michael adopted a vegetarian diet in 1976, transitioned to a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle in 2008, and earned his certification in Plant-Based Nutrition in 2019. His book, The Thriving Vegan, exposes how the food and pharmaceutical industries mislead the public—and how individuals can reclaim their health. In his latest book, The Longevity Wellness Revolution, Michael shares practical tools from the Blue Zones, as well as his discoveries, including breathwork, intermittent fasting, stress reduction, and more. He's passionate about showing that it's never too late to live with energy, purpose, and joy.   Links: Website: https://longevitywellnessrevolution.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/michael.dorfman.353/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thrivingvegan1/ X: https://x.com/readmide Substack: https://substack.com/mike82   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@richersoul Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. HT2699 - The Creative Life Is a Daily Habit It's almost a cliché to suggest that a creative life is a daily thing. The truth is that it's true. A drop of ink in a gallon of water changes the entire gallon. A drop of creativity in an ordinary day changes the entire day. Does that mean you need to shoot pictures everyday? Might be fun, but for most of us that's impractical. The only thing I know that I can do every day of my life is think about creativity, about photography, about locations, about ideas. Thinking can go with me everywhere, fill a minute here or there, and introduce a drop of creative momentum into every day. Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter Explains Brain Inflammation and Alzheimer's Risk Your brain has its own immune system, and when it turns against you, it becomes the hidden driver behind Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, depression, and even long COVID. This episode hands you the science to recognize it early and reverse it. Get Dr. Perlmutter's new book Brain Defenders: https://drperlmutter.com/books/brain-defenders/ Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist and six-time New York Times bestselling author whose work sits at the intersection of neurology, nutrition, and brain health. He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, serves on its Board of Directors, and sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. His books, including the number one bestseller Grain Brain, span 32 languages and have sold over a million copies, and his upcoming release, Brain Defenders, explores the pivotal role of microglia, the brain's immune cells, in protecting, repairing, and reprogramming the brain for lifelong resilience. Dave and Dr. Perlmutter break down how microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, shift from a supportive state into a destructive one called M1, and why this shift, not amyloid plaque, may be the real driver of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurodegenerative conditions. They dig into why the leading amyloid-clearing drugs fail to improve cognition, what a landmark JAMA study revealed about reversing cognitive decline through lifestyle intervention alone, and why a single daily serving of ultra-processed food raised Alzheimer's risk by 13 percent in a 12.7 year study. They also cover new research on GLP-1 drugs and brain inflammation, the surprising role of gum disease and oral bacteria in dementia risk, and why 40 hertz light therapy is emerging as a low-cost tool for clearing brain plaque and calming neuroinflammation. You'll Learn: Why the shift from supportive to destructive brain immune cells may be the true root cause of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Why leading Alzheimer's drugs fail to improve cognition, and what the original research behind the amyloid hypothesis actually showed How one daily serving of ultra-processed food raises Alzheimer's risk, and what a landmark lifestyle intervention study found instead Whether GLP-1 drugs help or harm brain inflammation, based on new Parkinson's and Alzheimer's trial data How gum disease and oral bacteria are linked to dementia, and simple daily habits that reduce that risk Why 40 hertz light therapy is emerging as a tool to clear brain plaque and calm neuroinflammation How ketones, DHA, and metabolic health protect the brain after head injury Thank you to our sponsors! - Beyond Wonderland Conference | Oct 13 - 14, 2026. This one is for the person who keeps starting and stopping. You want more energy, you want to feel better in your body, you want to finally be consistent. But it never sticks. In this episode, Ben breaks down why that happens, and what actually changes it. The truth? It was never a discipline problem. It's a self-trust problem. Every time you break a promise to yourself, you chip away at your identity. Change the self-image first, and the habits follow. The 5 habits Ben swears by: The kitchen is closed. No food at least 3 hours before bed. No snacking between meals. A 15-minute walk after your biggest meal of the day. 10 minutes of morning sunlight. Waiting 90 minutes for your first coffee. What we get into: Why motivation always disappears (hint: it's a symptom, not the source) and why inspiration beats it every time The start-stop cycle, and why people repeat it for years without breaking free How your body communicates through symptoms, and why those symptoms are a gift, not the problem Why perfectionism is just a fancy word for procrastination How small tweaks lead to giant peaks, and why doing less consistently beats doing everything at once One line to remember:It's not about knowing the right habits. It's about becoming the person who actually does them. Start with one: the kitchen is closed. Ready to finally lose the fat for good? In this episode, Dr. Tony Ebel takes a deep dive into six powerful, lifestyle-based ways to improve nervous system regulation for you and your entire family. While Neurologically-Focused Chiropractic Care remains the gold standard, Dr. Tony breaks down what you can do at home — every day — to actively support a regulated nervous system. From breathing and cardio to digestion, detoxification, sleep, and movement, he shows how these six core functions of the body are all deeply connected, and how optimizing each one helps combat the nervous system dysregulation at the root of so many chronic health struggles in kids and adults alike. In today's episode, I sit down with franchise consultant Giuseppe Grammatico to talk about building a business that creates financial success without sacrificing purpose, health, or happiness. We discuss the four values that shape my approach to life: gratitude for perspective, forgiveness for peace, accountability for control, and effective communication for lasting relationships. I also explain the overlap agreement, why non-negotiable daily habits create consistency, how to respond when life throws you off course, and why entrepreneurs should inventory their skills, knowledge, and desires before making major business decisions. Most real estate agents do not lose because there is no opportunity. They lose because their standards disappear when prospecting gets uncomfortable. In this episode, Tim and Julie Harris reveal the four daily habits that separate agents who thrive through market changes from the agents who stall, struggle, or leave the business. You will learn why proactive lead generation must remain your top priority, how to use daily database conversations to create more referrals and listings, why scripts make you more professional, and how financial discipline protects your business during slower months. Tim and Julie also explain why success comes from helping more people solve real problems, not from chasing shortcuts, waiting for the perfect market, or hoping social media creates a career for you. What you'll learn includes how to set a daily Hour of Power, why five rejections per day can move your business forward, how to speak with your past clients and center of influence consistently, how to stop winging listing and buyer conversations, and how to avoid becoming Realtor rich but financially unprepared.
