Merry Christmas! We made it. It's the most wonderful day of the year: Christmas Eve. Today, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the year behind us, what this Christmas journey has meant to me, and of course, read a story with you. I'll be reading from Charles Dickens's script of his one-man performance of A Christmas Carol, sharing one of my favorite scenes of all, the Cratchit family Christmas. It's full of warmth, joy, and the kind of cheer that makes you want to pull your chair a little closer to the fire. So settle in, pour yourself something festive, and let's enjoy these quiet moments together. Happy Christmas week, everyone! Is your shopping finished yet? Have you baked any good cookies? Today, I'm inviting you to pause for a moment and reflect on creativity, especially the beauty of bringing a handmade, home-crafted touch to Christmas. My guest is Elizabeth Duke, whose passion is teaching people how to stitch and craft in a mindful, intentional way. We talk about her career, how deliberate creativity can enrich our lives, and of course, all things Christmas. Along the way, I learn how a crafter's emotions can influence their stitching, discover the art of ice dyeing, and we share some of our favorite Christmas traditions. Merry Christmas! Today I'm back to spend a little more time with Mrs. Claus, and yes, the Christmas vibes are cranked all the way up! I share some traditions and memories sent in by listeners, then review a delightful new book, What Would Mrs. Claus Do? by Pamela McColl and Lindsay Stewart. I read a few favorite quotes and offer my thoughts on both the book and Mrs. Claus herself. After that, we gather by the Christmas fire for a reading of the narrative poem "Goody Santa Claus"—with "Goody" being an old-fashioned way of saying "Mrs." I also dive into the life of the author of the poem, Katharine Lee Bates. She was an American author best known for penning the lyrics to America the Beautiful. When it first appeared, it helped give Mrs. Claus her own voice in Christmas literature. Wherever you find yourself this week, I hope you're able to slow down, stay cozy, and savor the joy of the Christmas season. This week's episode of The Daily Life of Frank the cats have gone full mischief mode, turning the Christmas tree into their personal battleground whenever we're not home, while Moose has developed an obsession with candy canes that's getting out of hand. Nemo is finally settling in comfortably, though Moose decided to steal my earbud just to keep things interesting. Amid the madness, I remind myself that cuddles and hugs don't last forever, so it's important to enjoy them while they're here. On top of that, the birds and bees talk is looming, my daughter ended up in detention, and the Christmas shopping update is still a mix of stress and wrapping paper. And to cap it all off, John Cena's last match is happening, and yes—I will cry.Check out the podcast and all the fun at www.thedailylifeoffrank.com--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Let's connect! One of my favorite parts of Christmas is the lights! My guest today is new author Makennah Johnston, who has just published a wonderful children's story called "The McBrights": "Every Christmas Eve, the McBrights dazzle from the branches of the Evergreen Tree in Henbrook's town square, warming hearts with their old-fashioned glow. This year, however, something isn't quite right. The McBrights are left in their storage box for longer than usual, and when they are finally unpacked, they find themselves for sale at an antique store! They may be vintage, but their bulbs aren't burnt out yet. Bernie McBright is determined to get his family shining where they belong. Could the store's newest visitor be the spark the McBrights need to light up Christmas once more?" I also recommend another children's Christmas book called The Candy Cane Forest by Lindsay Ann Fink. It's a charming and colorful story of how Santa's elves plant and grow one of my favorite Christmas treats - Candy canes! After that I wrap up with a few thoughts on the lights of Christmas, and what they mean to me. Hello and Merry Christmas! My guest today is podcast host and the only man who dares enter the Grinch's lair, Tim Babb from the "Can't Wait for Christmas" podcast! Tim and I get together to talk about one of our favorite Christmas movies, 2000's "Dr. Suess' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" starring the brilliantly funny Jim Carrey. We talk about our favorite parts, favorite quotes, memories around the film, and more. We also talk about Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who!), her career post-Grinch, and her delightful new Christmas album, "A Pretty Reckless Christmas." This week on The Daily Life of Frank, I'm trying to figure out who signed me up for a loan underwriting program while battling the cold and snow that just won't quit. Meanwhile, my cats have officially claimed the Christmas tree as their secret fortress, turning it into their personal holiday hideout. My wife and I finally finished Stranger Things, and wow just wow. My son attempted to eat an Italian sub and somehow committed a food crime in the process, and I can only imagine my great‑grandma spinning in her grave watching this circus unfold.Check out the podcast and all the fun at www.thedailylifeoffrank.com--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Let's connect! Join Tage and Olivia this week as they are joined by Gini and Janelle as they discuss whether they would choose to eliminate Christmas or Halloween in the parks, their favorite Disney ornaments, whether they would choose a free DVC membership with unlimited visits or a free Club 33 membership with one visit a year, and where would they stay if they could stay an night somewhere unconventional in the parks. Support the podcast by going to https://www.thehubcrawl.com/support. Question 1: If you had to eliminate one holiday at the parks which would it be? Halloween or Christmas? And why? Question 2: The holidays are here and a lot of folks have Disney ornaments or decorations. What is your favorite holiday Disney decoration? If you don't have any, what is one that you would like? Question 3: Would you rather: Receive a free membership to DVC with unlimited visits to any of the DVC resorts? OR Receive a free membership to Club 33 but you're only allowed to visit once a year? Question 4: If you had to spend the night somewhere in DCA/Disneyland that is not a hotel/Disneyland Dream Suite/Walt's apartment, where would you stay? Bonus Question: If you have an extra day to your trip and you can not get into the parks on that day (for one reason or another) would you rather cut your vacation short by a day and go home or would you rather tack on a day doing non-parks offerings (resort hopping, downtown districts, nearby attractions, staring longingly at the gates, etc.)?

Today's Oddcast - No New Ornaments! (Airdate 12/1/2025) It's time to break out those Christmas trees and deck them out with ornaments you've held onto for your entire life! But for some people, buying a whole new set of Christmas tree ornaments every year has become a tradition of its own. The Bob & Sheri Oddcast: Everything We Don’t, Can’t, Won’t, and Definitely Shouldn’t Do on the Show!
A Victorian Christmas looks cozy on greeting cards—glowing candle-lit trees, shimmering tinsel, children gathered around the fire. But behind the snow-globe charm was a season of deadly house fires, toxic decorations, poisoned sweets, and experimental electric lights that turned “old-fashioned Christmas” into a very real nightmare. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we dig into the true history of how festive traditions nearly burned homes to the ground, poisoned entire families, and forced the world to rethink what “safe” even meant.Inside this episode:Candle-lit Christmas trees as ticking time bombs: How dry fir branches, open flames, and flammable Victorian fashion created instant infernos in parlors across Britain and beyond.Toxic snow, tinsel, and ornaments: From cotton “snow” that flashed into flame to lead-based tinsel and arsenic-dyed decorations that slowly poisoned anyone who touched or tasted them.Deadly toys and poisoned treats: The rise of arsenic greens, adulterated candies, and tainted puddings, and the chilling real-life stories of children who paid the price for “holiday cheer.”Early electric lights and new kinds of danger: How the “safe” alternative to candles—experimental electric light strings and overloaded wiring—brought shocks, sparks, and fresh fears to the Christmas season. From horror to reform: The fires, poisonings, and public scandals that pushed governments, scientists, and ordinary families toward modern safety standards, consumer protections, and fire codes that still save lives today. This Christmas, as you plug in your UL-listed lights and hang shatterproof ornaments, remember the people who learned these lessons the hardest way possible—and the ghostly echoes of Victorian Christmases that still haunt our holidays. We're telling that story tonight.

Happy Halloween! Tonight or tomorrow little trick or treaters will be out getting candy... what a perfect time to listen another spooky Christmas story for Halloween! Tonight's tale is called "The Judge's House", by the master of horror Bram Stoker. The story seems simple enough - a college student in need of a quiet place to study, rents an old house that that belonged to a judge whose cruelty was renowned. While his malignant portrait oversees the room, the rats come out to play... It may surprise you to learn that this tale was first published in a Christmas magazine in 1891. The Victorians, it seems, loved a good ghost story with their holiday cheer! I hope you find this story as delightfully chilling as I did while reading it for you. It's Halloween Week on A Cozy Christmas Podcast, and I'm celebrating by reading another spooky but cozy Victorian Christmas tale. This week, I'm reading “A Strange Christmas Game” by Charlotte Riddell — A brother and sister inherit an old, possibly haunted house whose previous owner met a mysterious end. After several nights of strange noises echoing through the halls, they decide to stay up on Christmas Eve to uncover the truth — and what they discover is most definitely not Santa Claus... Riddell wrote a perfect blend of cozy fireside storytelling and eerie suspense — the kind of story that will make you want to keep the lights on, but still smile at the warmth of a good old-fashioned ghostly yarn. So grab a blanket, light a candle, and join me as we celebrate the spooky season, Victorian style!
Happy Spooky Month everyone! As the autumn weather finally arrives here in Iowa, I am in the mood to read some excellent Christmas ghost stories that are perfect for the Halloween season. Today's story is called Sir Hugo's Prayer by G. B. Burgin. It's a humorous tale of the ghostly Sir Hugo and his wife who have been forced to haunt the family grounds. Then one Christmas Eve, a young lady arrives with two potential suitors who are seeking to win her affection. Will Sir Hugo be able to lend a (ghostly) helping hand? Also, I take a very quick look at the Saint behind the song "Good King Wenceslas" - which has also has a connection to our story. Who knew the name "Wenceslas" would be so hard to pronounce... I hope you enjoy today's funny and festive and slightly spooky story! In today's episode, I interview author John Holley about his new Christmas book "This Christmas". It tells the story of Marie Downs, who is not only grieving the loss of her husband, but has also had to step in and take care of her grandkids. It's a book that might not seem as cozy as our usual tales, but it's a beautiful story full of Christmas hope. I talk with John about his book and some serious subject matter, but we also have a lot of fun talking about our favorite Christmas traditions, memories, and foods. Find John Holley online: www.johnholley.com "This Christmas" by John Holley: "Marie Downs lost her husband to cancer last Christmas. Eleven months later, she is grieving the loss of her husband when her drug-addicted daughter disappears in their small town, which is rife with opioid addiction. Marie becomes the caregiver for her two grandchildren as she engages in the dangerous search for her daughter. All the while, she drifts in and out of the memories of her beloved husband of over 40 years. When her daughter turns up in the intensive care unit clinging to life after an overdose, Marie is challenged to face her anger with her daughter and find hope in her life as it is now. This Christmas is a testament to faith in yourself, hope for others and the love of family." Today I talk to Pamela McColl about her two new books on Mrs. Claus! In our discussion we talk about the history and development of the character of Mrs. Claus, and how she is often portrayed. We also speak about lessons we can learn from her, and how celebrating Christmas with Santa and Mrs. Claus helps enrich the imagination of children... and a few of us adults! Moses has brought the Israelites to Mount Sinai to meet with God who shows up in a mighty way. However, even after this awesome meeting, the Israelites soon slip into idolatry and moral bankruptcy. This leads to some pretty awful consequences and almost causes the people to lose their special place as God's chosen people. How will they react? Will they simply move ahead or will they repent? Welcome back to A Cozy Christmas Podcast! Summer's heat can make it hard to feel the Christmas spirit, but it's still there—waiting to be found and shared! In this episode, I talk about how creativity can spread joy—especially Christmas joy—and I take a moment to reflect on Currier & Ives and their timeless winter scenes. For our story today, I read the first two Christmas chapters of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. The March sisters' creativity, generosity, and joy shine through—whether in giving to a family in need, receiving an unexpected gift from a kind neighbor, or staging a delightfully chaotic homebased theatre performance. Together, they remind us that the best gifts we give (and receive) are always the most heartfelt. I'm finally behind the microphone again, bringing you all the cozy Christmas vibes as we countdown to Christmas 2025. Today, I read an Irish Christmas Story called "Frank Forrest's Mince-Pie" by Fr. Patrick Augustine Sheehan. It tells the story of a young man named Frank who has some strange Christmas dreams about Mince pies, an act of kindness - and of course, what Victorian Christmas story would be complete without some ghostly visitors! The Mirror of Ornaments (Alaṅkāradappaṇō) defines and exemplifies 42 figures of speech or “ornaments” in 134 verses. It is the only surviving work of poetics in Prakrit, a literary language closely related to Sanskrit. It is one of the earliest representatives of the larger Indian discourse on poetics, and is especially closely linked to Bhāmaha's Ornament of Literature (Kāvyālaṅkāra). This book includes an introduction, annotated translation, glossary, and diplomatic and critical editions of the single surviving manuscript of the Mirror of Ornaments.
