Emma hosts Dr. Steven Thrasher, assistant professor of journalism at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality And Disease Collide. Then, Emma is joined by filmmaker Dominique Remy to discuss her work on an upcoming documentary regarding maternal mortality, and the sobering data surrounding the issue that just came out from a study by the CDC. First, Emma runs through updates on Ginni Thomas' decision to speak in front of the 1/6 committee, Russian anti-war protests, and the Electoral Reform Bill, before diving into Donald Trump's legal woes, with Tish James coming for his property and an 11th Circuit panel overturning (and mocking) the decision by Aileen Cannon to grant him a Special Master. Emma and Dr. Thrasher then dive into where his term “viral underclass” came from, coined by queer activist Sean Strub during the AIDS epidemic, and a central theme of Thrasher's thesis on the sentencing of Michael Johnson, a college wrestler who was living HIV/AIDS and convicted of supposedly not disclosing his status (despite maintaining his innocence through to his successful appeal), before exploring what role this term can play as a tool of greater social analysis, with public health crises often funneling certain social groups into the role of scapegoat for social anxieties (be they based on race, sexual orientation, class, or other). Next, they look at the role of this “underclass” in helping maintain greater systemic issues of a for-profit healthcare system, deflecting the blame down to the individuals rather than the institutions in charge of regulating public health measures and information dissemination, before they jump to exploring the various stigmatized spaces through which diseases travel, looking at the spaces of colonialism and slavery as central to pathogen spread over the last few centuries, queer spaces during the AIDS epidemic, and more. Wrapping up, Dr. Thrasher and Emma tackle how looking at a “viral underclass” helps us explore the COVID pandemic, and why setting up preventative measures for crisis, including social welfare, pandemic preparation, and other institutions for public wellbeing, is a necessary step for both successful pandemic-response and ensuring an equitable solution. Dominique Remy then joins as she dives into her work on the Canary Film Project around the mass stratification in maternal mortality rates in the US between racially marginalized and more affluent, white communities, looking at how discussions of reproductive justice often exclude those impacted by maternal mortality and ignore any solution that attempts to look to systemic failures. Wrapping up, Remy dives into the incredible discussions she was able to learn from in the production of Canary, what the project entails writ large, and how those outside of the project can help. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as Eric Trump pops on a podcast to discuss how much people love his family, the Democratic establishment lashes back at Rashida Tlaib for attacking the oh-so-vulnerable state of Israel, Ed from Fort Worth talks Republican white nationalism, and inspires a discussion on reactionarianism and why it can never escape its own standpoint. Tucker Carlson dives into why straight pedophilia is good but gay anything is pedophilia, and Brian from DC reflects on yesterday's libertarian debater, plus, your calls and IMs! Sean Strub was the subject in the award winning feature documentary MY FRIEND, THE MAYOR:SMALL-TOWN POLITICS IN THE AGE OF TRUMP. A film about his pursuit (a gay man, HIV positive, liberal) of becoming mayor of Milford, Pennsylvania, a Trump supporting “red” town. It played at our LGBTQ+ Film Festival to rave reviews. Some of our frequent attendees called it the most joyful film that has ever played at our festivals. (Sean wins. Spoiler alert!!) This is one of those podcasts where we could have chatted with Sean for 5 hours. He’s lead a fascinating life. Just go to his Wikipedia page for examples. This podcast chat was about making this documentary, his motivations to run for mayor, and the day to day operations of being a mayor of a small town. Adrian Shanker talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” the new critically acclaimed anthology that creates a road map for action that could improve LGBTQ health. With essays by twenty-six well-known and emerging LGBTQ activists the book challenges conventional wisdom about healthcare providers and probes deeply into the roots of the health disparities that worsens health outcomes for our LGBTQ community. This book couldn’t be more relevant as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the onset of HIV/AIDS in America LGBTQ people have struggled against healthcare bias and discrimination. Through contributing authors that include Alisa Bowman, Jack Harrison-Quintana, Liz Margolies, Robyn Ochs, Sean Strub, Justin Tanis, Ryan Thoreson, Imani Woody and more “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” provides us with crucial information to fight for health equity through clinical, behavioral and policy changes. Though our LGBTQ community has experienced great strides toward civil rights in this country our health as a community still lags. “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” provides an indispensable blueprint for change by some of the most passionate and important health activists in the LGBTQ movement today calling on clinicians to up their game when it comes to caring for sexual and gender minority people. We talked to Adrian about what he hopes to accomplish with “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. Adrian Shanker earned a Graduate Certificate in LGBT Health Policy and Practice from George Washington University and serves as Executive Director of Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center in Allentown, PA. In this episode Matt Crawford talks to author and activist Sean Strub about his book Body Counts: A Memoir of Activism, Sex and Survival. This book recounts the AIDS epidemic from the very beginning through the lens of Sean's life as a gay man. From attending more funerals than parties, scared to angry he turned to activism to fight the discrimination and stigma attached to HIV and AIDS. A truly moving story of survival and compassion and an enlightening read.

In our conversation, Sean and I discuss the importance of building a relationship between the local community and the school district. Sean has this relationship with Milford’s schools: Delaware Valley SD (PA). As a school leader, this is very important for you to be a connector--a multiplier of people to be able to make connections that will help kids. Whether it is asking a local business that you frequent for a donation or getting tickets for your students for a local writers festival through the mayor's office, it very important for you to develop and cultivate these relationships. I am at Port Jervis HS in OC, NY and I have been blessed to be there for 14 yrs (7 as AP). In my book, The Principal: Surviving & Thriving, I describe this point in tip #38: Get to know key people in the community. In my phone I have the following phone numbers handy ready to contact in a moments notice: the police chief, the mayor, business leaders, the county legislator, the YMCA director, the library director, the district attorney, the probation officer, the funeral home director, etc, etc. You get the point. Be a connector in your school community….The school is the community and the community is the school. There are always situations where you will need these people to assist with students and issues happening within the school. Work on these relationships, even call them all together if need be. When the school leaders and the community leaders work together only good things can happen for kids. #Makeithappen. Last summer, in a Missouri courtroom, a college wrestler named Michael Johnson was sentenced to 30 years in prison for “recklessly infecting a partner with HIV.” Johnson, who also goes by “Tiger Mandingo”, was accused of knowingly infecting his partners with HIV, although at least one of them said Johnson called to tell him the diagnosis when Johnson tested positive for the virus. The case shed light on the stigmas surrounding sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, and especially HIV/AIDS. In more than 30 states there is a legal requirement for HIV positive individuals to disclose their status to whomever they’re having sex with. And while most people agree that honest conversation is a good practice, the laws allow people with HIV to be imprisoned for even spitting, biting or oral sex. “Every person with HIV in the country who knows they have HIV is one accusation away from finding themselves in a courtroom,” said Sean Strub, director of The Sero Project. Strub was diagnosed with HIV in the 1980s. Since then, treatments for STIs like HIV/AIDS has made significant progress across the globe. But Strub argues that an HIV diagnosis has continued to carry a stigma, perhaps even worse than before. And Strub said forcing people to disclose their status can backfire, and alienate a population that needs support. While Strub is working to change the policy, New York University sex researcher and educator, Zhana Vrangalova, is focused on challenging society’s perception of risky sex. “People really fear that STIs are more prevalent than they are…and that once you catch it you may always keep it,” she said. Vrangalova is on a mission to de-stigmatize safe sexual behavior. Her website, for example, is about casual sex and provides a forum for people to talk about the flings and one-night stands that are usually dismissed in traditional sex education. Students in her class learn how to balance health and protection with redefining normal sexual behavior. Jake Hernandez, a 23-year-old nursing student taking her class, has had personal experience with the same situation that got Michael Johnson behind bars. His ex-boyfriend called him to tell him he was HIV positive after they had oral sex, and luckily, Hernandez tested negative. Jake Hernandez, 23, is a nursing student at NYU. (Ankita Rao) While he felt betrayed by his boyfriend, Hernandez still believes society needs to challenge the stereotypes surrounded STIs and the people who have them, especially gay men. While visiting a sex shop for his class with Vrangalova, he said the assumption is, “that we just walk around having sex all the time.” “I mean I would probably say I’ve had casual sex once in my life. If I was dating a girl would you be saying all these things?”
From the founding of the republic and the debates over slavery, until the passage of the Civil Right act in l964, took nearly 200 years. With respect to the civil right issues of our time, from the Stonewall Riots in 1969, to the President of the United States supporting same sex marriages, took 43 tumultuous years. During that time, three generations would engage in the struggle. A plague would descend upon and become part of the struggle and take the lives of many in the movement. Public opinion would go from shock and horror to love and acceptance. As the saying goes, oh what a strange trip it was. Sean Strub has been a kind of Zelig of gay rights movement. He was there at all the key moments, with all the key players. He was on the ramparts, in the living rooms and hospital rooms and courtrooms along the way. He now gives us a memoir of his life and of the times we’ve all shared, in his new book Body Counts: A Memoir of Politics, Sex, AIDS, and Survival. My conversation with Sean Strub:
On Sunday Januaryy 29th at 9pm EST Robert Breining and Scott Kramer will be speaking with Filmmaker & Activist Sean Strub is a leading voice for the people with HIV self-empowerment movement and is the founder of POZ Magazine. Sean is the senior advisor to the Center for HIV Law & Policy's Positive Justice Project (combating HIV criminalization) and serves on the board of directors of the North American regional affiliate of the Global Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS. People with HIV who have been subjected to criminalization prosecutions have only rarely been heard from and are typically portrayed in the media as, at best, reckless and, at worst, monstrous. Most hold jobs, raise children, go to church, and are otherwise unremarkably different from others in society, except that they have HIV and were caught up in a profound injustice that often ruins their lives. HIV Is Not a Crime will bring their stories to light, raise awareness of the public health threats and human rights abuses created by HIV criminalization and help mobilize the advocacy necessary for reform.
