In a blend of personal narrative and in-depth reporting “New York Magazine's” Senior Writer, Sarah Jones, exposes the reality of America's racial and income inequality. Also, the devastating impact of the pandemic on our nation's most vulnerable people. Her new book is “Disposable: America's Contempt for the Underclass." “Disposable” is an exploration of that underclass left vulnerable by systemic racism and capitalism. She delves into the lives of the essential workers, seniors, and people with disabilities who were affected by COVID-19.
Donald Trump won a second term in part because of a disingenuous populist message that was intended to harness the anger of poor Americans at a system that does not serve them. Their anger is righteous–and while Trump is certainly not doing anything that will change this, his presidency is at least in part a symptom of our national contempt for the poor. Sarah Jones' new book “Disposable: America's Contempt for the Underclass” digs into this problem, and we've invited her here to discuss it further.
Five years after the Covid pandemic gripped the nation, it's time to reflect on how socioeconomic status determined life or death. Sarah Jones, senior writer for New York magazine, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the cracks in the social fabric that Covid revealed, why denialism of the illness proved to be so devastating and the death of her own grandfather from the disease. Her book is “Disposable: America's Contempt for the Underclass.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Journalist Steven Thrasher was featured as a speaker at the Missouri History Museum during a commemoration of World Aids Day on December 1. Thrasher's 2022 book, "The Viral Underclass," draws deeply from his reporting in the St. Louis region, and explores the way viruses — from HIV/AIDS to COVID-19 — expose society's fault lines.
The final episode is here! Let us all take a moment to mourn the loss of the seven people who were ruthlessly taken away from their families on that fateful night of December 28th, 2000. Their names, Ronette Abrams, Alfred Goodwin, George Porter, Malik Harris, Calvin Helton, and Tyrone Long Jr., must not fade into oblivion. We owe it to them to remember their names and the potential futures that were robbed from them. Let their tragic fate serve as a stark reminder that we must strive to create a society that values human life above all else. They were also threatened with the death penalty just like the foursome before them. That is until they all figured out a way to work their stories separately and get out of the death penalty all together. During their stay at prison, the foursome received death threats, harsh treatments, verbal abuse from the correctional officers and illegal tampering of their mail. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a photo of two little girls in the parking lot of a California Taco Bell went viral. They were doing their schoolwork on laptops in that inconvenient location because the restaurant provided free Wi-Fi, which they didn’t have at home. The girls came to symbolize the digital underclass that’s emerged since the rise of the internet. There are millions of American kids like them, says Nicol Turner Lee, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Her analysis of the digital divide is contained in her new book, “Digitally Invisible: How the Internet Is Creating the New Underclass.”

The huge rise in international students in Canada — most of them from Punjab, India — has become one of the biggest stories in the country. But most media outlets and political parties have framed it entirely as a housing issue. They're missing the point. This is a story about the creation of a new, racialized underclass to do all of the work we don't want to do. And it's about the human wreckage that's left in the wake after we're done squeezing those people of every penny and every drop of sweat that we can.Featured in this episode: Jaspreet Singh, Rupa BanerjeeTo learn more:“The International Student Boom Might Be Over” by Kuwarjeet Singh Arora in Baaz News“How recruiters in India use false promises to lure students to Canada” by CBC's Fifth Estate“Canada's open secret: International students are here to be exploited” by Kunal Chaudry in The BreachCredits: Arshy Mann (Host and Producer), Jordan Cornish (Producer), Noor Azrieh (Producer), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Cahief)Sponsors: Douglas, Article Additional music from Audio NetworkIf you value this podcast, Support us! Are viruses the “great equalizers” that some people claim them to be? Are we all similarly susceptible not only to infection from viruses but also to the consequences from infection? The short answer is no. The longer answer can be found in this week's book club pick, The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide by Dr. Steven Thrasher. Dr. Thrasher, the inaugural Daniel H. Renberg Chair and Assistant Professor of Journalism at Northwestern University, joins us to discuss how racism, classism, sexism, ableism, stigma, and other forms of oppression intersect to create a viral underclass, a group of individuals that are disproportionately susceptible to and impacted by viruses. Our conversation takes us through several of these vectors of the viral underclass as well as personal stories that illustrate how social and political structures punish certain communities for getting sick while others profit. Part memoir, part academic discussion, part journalism, and entirely groundbreaking, The Viral Underclass is an incredibly timely book that demonstrates the ways that viruses amplify and exacerbate existing inequalities while also underlining how we are truly all in this together. Our interconnectedness means that if one of us is vulnerable to infection, then we all are.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
