In this episode of Beyond Surviving, I connect with Neal Brownell, The Crazy Inventor.Born virtually blind and being misdiagnosed as being mentally slow until the age of 7, Neal came to believe that he was worthless and would never amount to anything. Even after his disability was discovered, it wasn't until he was 11 years old that he was nurtured by a loving teacher and could begin to see himself differently. This growth was interrupted at 15, when his parents “rented” him to a pedophile. His journey healing from these traumas over the last 50 some years has given him deep insight and understanding of what it takes to break free from generational trauma.Neal wants you to know, "It really doesn't matter where you are right now. You can move ahead and get better."www.nealbrownellthecrazyinventor.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/beyond-surviving. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today's episode is about infant loss. If you are not prepared to listen to this story today, please skip it. Take care of yourself and reach out for help if you are in need. See resources below or on my website. This episode is dedicated to the Shenoy family and to all families who have survived the loss of a child. My guest today is Divya Shenoy. She was pregnant with twins when she came to me for postpartum care. She started early because she knew the risk of preterm birth was increased for twin pregnancies. Shortly after we began working together, she learned that her cervix was shortening and that she required a cerclage- that is a stitch placed in the cervix to help it stay closed and keep the babies inside where they belong. Unfortunately, a few days after her cerclage was placed, her water broke. She spent the next couple of weeks in the hospital so that she and the babies could be monitored closely for the right time to have her babies. We actually had our first session while she was in the hospital and still pregnant. On Jan 14, 2022, she gave birth to two beautiful baby boys, Arvin and Ajay. They weighed less than 2 lbs each. She knew that what was to come was going to be difficult and likely not look at all like what she had seen others go through as they made their transition into parenthood. Stay with us as Divya to tell the rest of her story on her terms. In this second part of our best-of series, we talk with Sarah Nannen. With four children under 6 -- the youngest just a few months old -- Sarah's life was upended as both a mother and a wife when her husband, an Air Force fighter pilot, was killed in a training accident. A former naval officer herself, she understood how to navigate through the material and logistical details of the tragedy, but needed to learn how to move through the emotional upheaval of instantly becoming a widow and a single mother. In this episode, she tells BEYOND THE CRUCIBLE host and Crucible Leadership founder Warwick Fairfax that she needed to lean into her pain to build a new and hope-filled future. Today she helps others who have been rocked by crucible experiences find the emotional strength to not be defined by their tragedies and setbacks. "There is more to your life," she says, "than the thing that happened to you." Podcasting is a lot like life - you can prep, plan, and prepare your heart out, but sometimes things end up completely different than you ever expected. This episode is the epitome of that! My conversation with Tamra Stephenson was beautiful, vulnerable, motivating and endearing… and also completely unexpected! Tamra's courage to open up about her journey encouraged my own, and I loved sharing this conversation with her. Tamra is a true icon and example for women in what it means to go from surviving to thriving. Tamra is a powerhouse fitness instructor, paddle board guide, and marketing manager who has raised four girls with her spouse of 26 years. In 2012, Tamra was diagnosed with MS; and immediately launched into raising awareness for MS, completing her first annual fundraiser in 2013, all while keeping up teaching group fitness and pushing herself to overcome the physical and mental obstacles presented with MS. Tamra strives to live a full and meaningful life, powering through difficult days, and spread education about varying levels of MS. She's rafted down the Pacuare river in Costa Rica, and continues to try new and exciting adventures—believing that life is meant for adventure. On any given day, you can catch her teaching a class, mentoring a student, dancing like no one is watching (which usually involves a fair amount of booty shaking), or out on the lake. Follow her on IG @mountainhighfit
In part one of this two-part series, guest host Debbie Stiegler walks us through finding purpose and hope in the face of hardship. Debbie is the executive director of ministry at Abundant Life and the author of Beyond Survival: How to Find Hope, Healing, and Happiness After Any Setback Because Surviving Isn't Enough. Debbie never saw herself as an author, but as she faced several difficult circumstances over the years, she began to take notes on the lessons the Lord taught her. She believed that there had to be a purpose for her pain. In a season when she felt buried, she realized that God was planting her and growing her into what He needed her to be. To survive a difficult incident, sometimes we must unbecome who we are so we can become who God ultimately wants us to be. After surviving this tragedy, we might feel stuck. Gracefully moving past who were is the mark of a mature person whose heart is longer broken into pieces. Through God, we can move from survival mode into overcoming mode. Beyond Survival releases on August 28th. To learn more about Debbie or her upcoming books, check out her website below. Debbie Stiegler https://debbiestiegler.com Abundant Life https://livingproof.co

In this episode, I connect with Beyond Surviving graduate, Andrea Harris. She shares about her journey out of believing that the only way to survive was to please and take care of everyone but herself. She was for many years stuck believing that she didn't deserve to be herself, to enjoy healthy relationships, to set boundaries, or to take up space. Yolanda Colon, an executive in the finance industry, joins Yuliana today to share the tragic story of the stillborn death of her son and also how she found the strength and courage to take back her life after the brutal end of her 24-year marriage. Her story is one of courage and self-awareness which, as you will hear, has made her the phoenix that she is today. Yolanda begins by sharing the events that redirected the course of her life - grieving her stillborn son and experiencing a divorce. She then delves into the events that surrounded her son's death and the sad postpartum experience that followed. Yolanda also discusses the fear she experienced when she became pregnant again after the death of her son and how she was able to overcome it, as well as her divorce and going to therapy. She leaves us with words of wisdom on how and why to set boundaries and also to take back our power and forgive ourselves. The episode concludes with Yolanda identifying the one person she would love to go back in time to speak with, Maya Angelou, who inspires her with a quote about going beyond surviving and thriving. Episode Highlights: - The challenging event that redirected the course of Yolanda's life - A sad postpartum experience - Grieving with her family by her side - Reliving the experience with another baby - The courage it took to overcome her fear - Experiencing a brutal divorce and seeking therapy - Healing through the pain - The importance of setting boundaries - Advice to women going through a divorce - One person Yolanda would go back in time to speak with Quotes: “He just wasn't meant for this life. I accepted that.” “We go through nine months of pregnancy, and we get a beautiful gift at the end. And I left the hospital without a gift, that was gut-wrenching and difficult for me.” “Life is going to throw you curveballs. So I had to grieve the loss of my son in the same way that I had to grieve the recent abrupt ending of my marriage.” “I believe vulnerability is courage.” “At the end of the day, my daughters don't need me to save them. They need to see me save myself and thrive.” “I am taking active steps to live the life that I want to live.” “No one can take your power away from you. I let that happen. I've forgiven myself and it won't happen again.” “We all hold to the fantasy life, ‘What could I have done differently?' And the fact of the matter is nothing. No one can go back and change anything. We can only change what happens in the future. ” “In my marriage, I felt that I wasn't enough. But I was enough, and I am enough, and I will always be enough.” “Boundaries are not meant to offend anyone. They are meant to respect our feelings because every woman deserves peace and safety.” “This chapter of my life is called ‘Make room for lightness, make room for abundance, make room for what is meant for me with ease and flow.'” “We're not raised in comfort. We are made of stuff that should have broken us but didn't. We are not formed with ease and grace. We are made of fire in storms.” “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style” Links: https://www.yulianakimgrant.com/phoenix-tales (Phoenix Tales Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/yulianakimgrantofficial/ (Phoenix Tales on Instagram) https://open.spotify.com/show/1heIpPMsG6HbXXIDLmAnEe (Phoenix Tales on Spotify) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=322043276201679 (Phoenix Tales on Facebook)
I speak with Hélène Clabecq, branding wonder woman, disruptive story teller, unapologetic leader, and certainly one of my favorite things about her – she's a Beyond Surviving graduate.Helene shares with us her own story of healing and how that has led her to take a stand and become a voice for change for other women. We explore how to respond to bullies, the prejudices and judgements of others so we can stand in our own power and advocate for ourselves. In this episode of Beyond Surviving, I connect with Crystal Protsman, who graduated from Beyond Surviving in 2020. We talk about her personal and harrowing journey navigating the court system. This led her to further explore art expression, which has become a significant part of her healing. She shares with us some pro tips on how to get started with art expression and use it in your day to day to support your own healing journey!EXERCISE:Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine a calm, safe place. As the Beyond Surviving Podcast enters its 8th season (whoa!), I am feeling called to do something special for 2021. Every month, I am going to interview a Beyond Surviving Graduate! These amazing women and men who I have had the great honor to walk alongside in their healing journeys are going to be sharing their own stories of healing, discussing topics that they long to bring attention to – things like overcoming chronic pain, cultivating deep self-love, conquering fear, finding one's voice, the healing power of art, navigating the court system and more! And I thought I'd kick things off with my own story and what life looks like for me now 14 years after creating the Beyond Surviving program and living by the principles of this program!I share how my story has evolved and changed over the years due to the continued integration of the abuse I've experienced. I get real about some of the fears I had to overcome in order to even step into this work. I share some of my favorite success stories of clients who I've had the honor to mentor over the years. Finally, I talk about what I hope this next year of Beyond Surviving will bring right before bursting into tears!---Support our show! In this episode of Beyond Surviving, Seth Shelley and I explore and challenge the messages that male survivors are faced with, such as “Real men don't get raped”, “You should have fought back”, “You must have enjoyed it or your body wouldn't have responded the way it did.”In a world where we are increasingly becoming aware of the prevalence of sexual trauma, we must bring men into the conversation as more and more the statistics are bearing out that boys are abused to nearly an equal degree as girls. And yet, because of the messaging that boys/men receive, the way boys are socialized, men struggle to find their voice and share their stories. That's why I am so thankful that Seth Shelley is among the men who are paving the way for male survivors to speak up, be heard, and break the cycles of silence.Men Need To Talk About Their Sexual Abuse | Seth Shelley | TEDxUNBChttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4CIop1zlVMwww.sethshelley.com#beyondsurvivors #sethshelley #malesurvivors #metoo #mentoo #healing #yourstorymatters #breakthesilence #nomoreshame #mythbustingSupport our show! The quote “Rewrite your story” has been popping up all over my social media. Is trying to change your past trending? Is it really that healthy? In my own personal opinion, it is the furthest thing from growth and healing possible. It is the furthest thing from acceptance. It is the furthest thing from building from where we are right now. Which is how we choose to move. A focus on changing the past is a hard stop in our right now. In this episode I share a recent personal experience with a https://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/features/panic-attack (Panic Attack), and how choosing to look at my past narrative helped me in my movement forward. There is hope at our darkest times, even though it is hard to see. It's not a blind hope, and it is full of work. However, the thing that is most important to know is that you are worth it. She's a counselor and Sexual Abuse and Trauma Recovery Coach at Rachel Grant Coaching. Her program, Beyond Surviving, has been specifically designed to change the way we think about and heal from abuse. Rachel writes, "The Beyond Surviving program is based on what I have learned through my own journey of recovery from sexual abuse, my study of neuroscience, and my training in counseling psychology. I have given much thought to the structure and content of the program so that my clients can reach the recovery goals they set in a way that is approachable and straightforward." She goes on to explain, "We use my guidebook, Beyond Surviving: The Final Stage in Recovery from Sexual Abuse as the roadmap for our work. Each month, we cover a few of the lessons from the guidebook and I bring in additional reflections and exercises for each session." She points out, "Ultimately you are in the driver's seat, and we prioritize our work based on your needs.
