Andrew discusses how his organisation serves 25,000 learners across seven colleges with a purpose-driven approach of "changing lives through learning." He reveals key leadership strategies including maintaining local college identities while leveraging shared resources, implementing employee engagement initiatives like wellness days and recognition programmes, and addressing the challenges of chronic underfunding in further education. Andrew emphasises the importance of holistic student support, building resilient leadership through self-care and boundaries, recruiting for attitude over skills, and perhaps most significantly, establishing "kindness as a superpower" as a core organisational value. He believes true leadership comes through experience, focusing on outputs rather than hours worked, and creating a people-centered culture where small acts of kindness can transform someone's day.    Connect with Andrew: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewgreen1968/ Website:  https://www.chigroup.ac.uk/     ##########   If you are looking for a Blueprint to help you and your business manage uncertainty, deal with failure and navigate change then reach out to Julian at: julian@julianrobertsconsulting.com   You can buy my book "Weathering the Storm: A Guide to Building Resilient Teams" on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DFTYN2Y2   ##########

What is transformational creativity, and how does it apply to the field of education? In the second part of the double expresso episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, world-renowned creativity scholar Dr. Robert Sternberg dives into the evolving perceptions and applications of creativity over his 50-year career. Together, they engage in a critical discourse on how modern education and standardized testing fail to genuinely value creativity. Sternberg's insightful critique highlights the misuse of creativity for personal and financial gain rather than societal benefit, introducing the concept of "pseudo transformational creativity," where leadership appears transformational but serves self-interests. He emphasizes the importance of learning from history to recognize and combat deceptive leadership, advocating for "true transformational creativity" that positively impacts society. Additionally, Sternberg discusses the alarming decline in moral and civic education in favor of test preparation, arguing for a balanced, value-integrated approach to teaching creativity. The episode also tackles the implications of generative AI on creativity and cognitive abilities. Sternberg shares his concerns that excessive reliance on AI could erode human creativity and critical thinking, mentioning real-world incidents where students depended on AI against academic integrity guidelines. Sternberg offers valuable tips for educators, including promoting moral values, varying teaching styles, and encouraging independent thinking. About Dr. Robert Sternberg: Dr. Robert J. Sternberg is a Professor of Psychology in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University and an Honorary Professor of Psychology at Heidelberg University, Germany.  Sternberg is a Past President of the American Psychological Association, the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, the Eastern Psychological Association, and the International Association for Cognitive Education and Psychology. Our guest, Alaya Dannu, shares an important message for humanity which showed up in a dream she calls The Eternal Return in which the three ancient mothers (also called Ammas) made specific requests for how we can bring the world back into balance. Among their requests, they suggest that we can make our lives sacred starting by connecting with the body.  After the break we take a call from Kimberly from Gilbert, Arizona about how to heal enough to get to the point of being able to access the sacred. Alaya recommends that we investigate our lineages and find supportive communities and also that we commit to movement practices and create sacred spaces in our homes. BIO: Alaya A. Dannu, MA, M.Ed. In today's episode, we discuss a critical issue many schools are facing—how to help students and staff heal from trauma. Whether it's a safety event, severe weather like Hurricane Helene, or individual traumas, schools across the nation are navigating unprecedented challenges. To help students learn, we must first help them process what they've been through. As Lana Penley says, "In moments of crisis, we need to provide space for students and teachers to process what they've been through before diving back into academics." I want to acknowledge those still in the midst of trauma, like those affected by ongoing flooding in North Carolina. We have to meet their immediate needs first, as we cannot move forward until people feel safe and supported. While my hometown of Camilla, Georgia, was spared from the worst of Hurricane Helene, I know many of you are still facing tremendous struggles, and my heart is with you. In this episode, Lana Penley shares her powerful story of transformation. After her school burned down, she realized that test scores weren't the primary goal—what truly mattered was creating a sense of community, connection, and healing. As her school focused on relationships, both with students and among the staff, they saw remarkable changes: teachers felt less burnout, students were more engaged, and yes, test scores went up. This episode is a resource for educators and principals who are hurting, who want to help their students, and who need to know that it's okay to pause and heal before pushing forward.   Show notes, guest bio, and transcript: https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e865   Questions Answered in this Episode How do you help students and teachers heal after a traumatic event in a school community? What are the key steps to take in the aftermath of trauma, such as a hurricane or school safety event? How can schools create connection and community to create a safe learning environment? What practical strategies can teachers use to bring social-emotional learning into their classrooms? How can educators balance the need for academic progress with the emotional needs of students and staff? What lessons did Principal Lana Penley learn from her school burning down, and how did it change her approach to education? Why is it important to address the emotional needs of teachers as well as students in times of crisis? What role does mindfulness and stress reduction play in helping students and staff recover and thrive?
