Congress plays a central role in shaping the U.S.'s energy and conservation policies. This week, Joseph and Quill sit down with Rep. Bruce Westerman, representative for Arkansas's 4th congressional district and Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources. Rep. Westerman shares his perspective on the long tradition of conservation in the U.S., the importance of permitting reform to help meet power demand growth, and the need for an all-of-the-above energy approach.
Obstacles after graduation? Hannah Westerman is the Founder of Avenue West. She started her company 9 years ago in a coffee shop in New Orleans with nothing but a laptop and the desire to create beautiful things for people and companies she believed in. She knows that entrepreneurship can be scary, but perseverance and belief in yourself can help overcome even the toughest moments. Today she has a team of talented creatives who she collaborates with for different projects. Hannah is a native Portlandian who through a series of serendipitous events landed in Philadelphia, which she now calls home. When she's not designing or drawing, she is riding her yellow bike around the city or seeing live music. In episode 559 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Hannah chose Binghamton University, how college prepared her for a career in graphic design, how she overcame the obstacles after graduation, advice for college students who want to start their own business, how play in the workplace is helpful, what kinds of work she does with NFL stars, more about the Christmas album she helped to create with the Philadelphia Eagles, and tips for college students that want high quality images for their IG accounts. Enjoy!

Episode 12 - Doctor Makere Stewart Harawira speaks on Environmental Personhood What - The "environmental personhood", or legal personhood, movement is a result of successive governments around the world failing to adequately protect the environment, as well as to the growing recognition of Indigenous Peoples' rights and Indigenous legal concepts (Lowrie, 2021; Westerman, 2019). The movement acknowledges that environmental personhood exceeds the value to humanity. It is not that the people have a right to clean air, but that the air has a right to be clean (Parish, 2021). Rivers have become a central focus in the Rights of Nature movement. Who - In episode 12 we hear from Makere Stewart-Harawira, a Professor in Indigenous, Environmental, and Global Studies in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Education, University of Alberta. Her research focus: is climate change, freshwater governance, Indigenous knowledge systems, ethics and values in relation to integrative approaches to ecosystem and human-more-than- human wellbeing, multi species justice and planetary stewardship. Dr. Stewart-Harawira is an Expert Member on a number of Commissions for the International Union for the Conservation including the Commission on Ecosystem Management, joint Specialist Group on Indigenous Peoples, Customary & Environmental Laws and Human Rights and is a National Board Member for Keepers of the Water, Canada. Playwright Naomi Westerman was an anthropology graduate student studying death rituals around the world when her whole family died, turning the end of lives from an academic pursuit into something deeply personal. She became fascinated by the concept of loss and grief, the multiple ways we experience it across cultures, history, and art. Happy Death Club: Essays on Death, Grief, and Bereavement Across Cultures (404 Inklings, 2024) is part memoir, part meditation on the many faces of death – from sprinkling ashes across the globe, to the power of horror movies, the complexities of engaging in true crime entertainment, and the vital communities of peer support groups – Happy Death Club is a frank, curious and darkly humorous look at one person's journey through grief, and what lies beyond. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Tuesday is the last day of National Poetry Month, and Minnesota Now marked the occasion by talking to the state's very own Poet Laureate, Professor Gwen Westerman. She was appointed by Governor Walz in 2021, and is the third poet to hold the title in Minnesota.Preceding her was Joyce Sutphen, appointed in 2011, and Robert Bly, who started things off in 2008. Westerman teaches English and Humanities at Minnesota State University Mankato, and she's published two poetry collections, “Songs, Blood Deep,” and “Follow the Blackbirds.”
Fred is joined by CSF Director, Federal Relations Taylor Schmitz as the pair catches up with the Co-Chair of the Congressional Sportsmen's' Caucus, House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman to discuss the America's Wildlife Habitat Conservation Act, which recently passed the House Natural Resources Committee. Fred, Taylor and Chairman Westerman discuss sportsmen's issues and the importance of habitat management. The Chairman highlights the need for better management of public lands and the role of private landowners in wildlife conservation. Chairman Westerman also addresses the challenges of the Endangered Species Act and the struggles we see there, and the need for modernization. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the frustrations of getting bipartisan bills passed and the importance of working together for the benefit of sportsmen and women. Takeaways Habitat management is crucial for wildlife conservation and the health of ecosystems. Public lands need better management, and private landowners play a vital role in wildlife habitat improvement. The Endangered Species Act needs modernization to focus on habitat recovery and provide flexibility for landowners. Bipartisan cooperation is essential for passing legislation that benefits sportsmen and women.
