Andy Williams and Sean Wilson from Frame to Frame podcast join Flixwatcher to review Andy's choice Son of Rambow. Son of Rambow (2007) is a British comedy coming of age film written and directed by Garth (Sing) Jennings. Set over a summer in the 1980s, Will (Bill Milner) is a quiet and shy 11-year-old who lives with his religious family where TV is banned. He meets Lee (Will Poulter), an older and possibly the worst behaved boy in school who is left home alone with his older brother. Lee sees an opportunity for Will to be his stuntman in a film he making inspired by First Blood for a competition and they form a friendship. Son of Rambow is a charming, sweet slice of 1980s nostalgia. Will Poulter is clearly a star in the making and the film within a film is equally as charming. Recommendability for Son of Rambow was very high, even for first time watcher Andy, slightly lower repeat viewing scores give an overall rating of 4.35. Allyson finally watches Son of Rambow and learns a little about childhood Mike. Will she agree with him that this movie successfully captures the feeling of those early meaningful friendships or will the generation and gender gap not make it relatable at all. Mike schools us on ADR and the history of the Hammer & Tongs producing team. Will Allyson agree that right out of the gate in his film debut that Will Poulter was destined to be a star? Was Rocketman a better movie than Bohemian Rhapsody or was it a MUCH better movie than Bohemian Rhapsody? Will Allyson mercilessly mock Mike's attempt at a poignent Marcus Parks wrap up? This week, Mike and Glen revisit their childhood, not with a film from their childhood, but rather a film that mirror's their childhood and their love for film with "Son of Rambow". Written and directed by Garth Jennings and starring Bill Milner and Will Poulter, this film is about a time during a long English summer in the early 1980s, two schoolboys from differing backgrounds set out to make a film inspired by First Blood (1982). The Arms Race podcast returns to discuss the Rambo-adjacent comedy, Son of Rambow!
Without wishing to sound sycophantic, it's hard to imagine a more humble talent that Garth Jennings. During this episode, he and Edith discuss many of his extraordinary creative endeavours - though on hearing the conversation you'd be forgiven for thinking he'd had next to nothing to do with any of them at all. Don't be fooled. Having founded production company Hammer & Tongs with Dominic Leung and Nick Goldsmith in 1993, Garth has been instrumental in a string of iconic music videos and also written and directed Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, Son of Rambow and most recently Sing. Oh yes, he's penned a children's book too. Expect music from composer Joby Talbot, Blur, Fatboy Slim, Betty Wright and more.
We are very excited here at Soundtracking that we have teamed up with EE, the headline sponsor of the EE British Academy Film Awards, to create a series of special podcasts over the next few months. In that time, we will explore the minds and experiences of BAFTA talent and we start the partnership this week with past EE Rising Star Award winner, Will Poulter. For one so young, Will has already built up a mighty impressive CV. Having made his breakthrough in Son Of Rambow back in 2007, the 24-year-old has since had significant roles in Maze Runner, We're The Millers, War Machine and The Revenant. His most recent outing was in Detroit, in which he plays a racist and sadistic police officer involved in a shocking case of brutality during the city's 1967 race riots. It's a performance of stunning depth and maturity - and one that may yet see him nominated for an Oscar. All of these films are interesting from a musical perspective too - from the 80s Rambow soundtrack to Cave / Ellis vehicle War Machine and The Revenant, which was score by Ryuicho Sakomoto, Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner from The National. We'll also hear music from The Cure, Ben E King, Tracy Chapman and Toto.
Dive into a fun and inspiring chat with composer Joby Talbot. Joby's diverse career and versatile talents have led to a multitude of memorable scores such as for The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Penelope, Son Of Rambow and now Sing. We discuss Joby's path to film scoring and how he approaches certain genres of films. We delve into Sing, which is the newest film from Illumination Entertainment who brought us Despicable Me and Minions. Joby talks about the challenge of creating a score for a film that has pop songs and musical numbers throughout. He also discusses his ongoing collaboration with director Garth Jennings across the films they have worked on together. Joby brings his unique voice as a composer into all of his music and it was such a blast to dissect his process with him. Mark talks to filmmaker Garth Jennings about his 2007 feature Son Of Rambow.
On this episode we attempt to recreate favorite movie moments in podcast form by looking at films where characters recreate movie moments. SON OF RAMBOW and BE KIND REWIND provided a great opportunity for a guest appearance by David from THAT MOMENT IN to talk about what he looks for in film and how he talks about the art form. Before that, we love similar moments in ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, but have different reactions to this new release as a whole.
