Dreams and death: Do dreams show us what it’ll be like to be dead? Our guest this week is Jenna Farr Ludwig. Jenna starts by describing two death dreams from childhood in one of which she dreamed of her mom falling off a cliff shortly before her mom died in a waking-life car wreck. We talk about pre-diagnosis dreams, dreams before death, visitation dreams, and about how to distinguish death dreams that are related to physical death vs death dreams that signal transformation and growth. We also talk about what dreams may have to say about what it will be like to be dead. After the break we hear from four listeners. First Lenore from Oakland gives examples of some dreams that have made her less frightened of dying. Then David Jenkins (episode link is below) from Berkeley talks about sequences of visitation dreams and about how they can evolve. Rick Kleffel, DJ radio engineer and music creator, comments that dreams may be a foretaste of death in that they are experiences we have in which the physical body plays little or no role. Third, Dylan calls from Florida to share some of his profound reincarnation dreams. Finally, Ray from Santa Cruz calls to ask about how to talk to loved ones who have passed away. In this episode we are joined by Dr. Meaghan Kavanagh to chat about diet-disease relationships and translating nutrition knowledge into action for cardiovascular health.Meaghan is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto and the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre at St. Michael's Hospital, mentored by Dr. John Sievenpiper. Her research explores diet-chronic disease relationships through clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and epidemiology. Our dream self is different in many ways from our waking self. They are often much more beleaguered and can behave differently than we imagine that our waking self would. Why is this important, and how can we help them? Our guest today is David Jenkins, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of “Dream RePlay: How to Transform Your Dream Life.” David shares an example of a dream of someone whose car is stuck in the mud and compares working with the image symbolically vs exploring the feelings of the dream self in their situation and giving them empathy and maybe even advice. We also talk about dream themes and how they change and how they parallel waking life themes which evolve as well. After the break we take a call from Jane from Santa Cruz who shares her series of dreams around her deceased mother and how they evolved as she came to terms with the reality of her passing. We then take a question from Max about how lucidity affects our definition of this dream self as different from our waking self. In the year that Jacques Demy's beloved Umbrellas of Cherbourg turns 60, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones reflect on their favourite aspects of the screen musical.According to some, we're currently in the midst of a movie musicals revival, with Jon M Chu's Wicked hot on the heels of Emila Perez and Joker: Folie à Deux, but will any of them match what Ellen considers to be the pinnacle of the form, the 1950s Hollywood musical? Her love of the classic MGM musicals primed Ellen to be a huge fan of the TV show Crazy Ex Girlfriend when it came along. This is the musical sitcom that took all of these essential elements of the 1950s Hollywood musical, then recombined them with a very 21st Century approach to relationships and mental health. Ellen speaks with Crazy Ex Girlfriend creator and star Rachel Bloom about Disney, writing jokes for the screen, and spontaneous singing. But it's essential to pay proper tribute to the classics, and in particular the work of American lyricist and producer Arthur Freed. Ellen sat down with writer, filmmaker and actor Manuela Lazic to talk about Freed's masterpiece, 1952's Singin' in the Rain which stars Gene Kelly, who also co-directed with Stanley Donen. And Mark meets Janis Pugh, director of Chuck Chuck Baby, a low budget, British indie charmer set in a chicken processing factory that is deeply influenced by Jacques Demy's 1964 French hit The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Janis Pugh is not alone in her love of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It follows the story of two young lovers whose future together is interrupted by the Algerian war, with the French dialogue entirely sung and set perfectly to the music of Michel Le Grand. Oui, vous avez bien entendu. Il s'agit d'un jeu britannique qui consiste à faire tourner un marron au bout d'une ficelle, le but étant de briser celui de son adversaire. David Jenkins, un passionné du jeu, y participe depuis 1977 sans jamais avoir remporté le titre. Jusqu'à cette année, où il décide de passer à l'action.Lors de la finale, son adversaire remarque que son marron s'est désintégré d'un coup, ce qui est extrêmement rare. Arts organizations around Florida are scrambling to make up budget shortfalls after Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed $32 million in cultural and museum grants. The cuts will have an impact on hundreds of theatres, museums, performance groups and other arts organizations large and small. The vetoes are part of nearly $1 billion that DeSantis trimmed from the state budget, which is now a whopping $116.5 billion. “We're making big investments in our future while spending less of our taxpayer's money to maintain our state's strong financial standing and robust economy," DeSantis wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Cord Byrd listing the line-item vetoes. To talk more about the role of arts organizations in the Tampa Bay economy and how they will navigate the next year without those state grants, we spoke with David Jenkins, Producing Artistic Director at Jobsite Theater at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Mary Bensel, Executive Director at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in the city of Sarasota, Brian Hersh, CEO of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota and Jennifer Jones, President and CEO, Florida Cultural Alliance.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to two guests who have been on the podcast prior but not at the same time. We are speaking with David Jenkins, son of actor Paul Jenkins and Jordan Summers, son of actor Yale Summers. This is a unique episode for a couple of ways, the first is that we don't often have two guests on at the same time.
