Russia gradually pushed into Ukrainian territory, Ukraine fought back and Russia, although suffering great costs, managed to keep going. But that is now changing - as the dynamics of the war are undergoing major shifts - and as those shifts are quickly picking up pace. Ukraine has a new strategy to win the war. The gradual Russian push has been slowed to a halt and Ukraine has increasingly been able to go on the offensive, capturing lost territory and pushing back Russian forces. And Russia is increasingly struggling with something that was never really expected to become a major issue - and it's getting so bad that it's quickly approaching an inflection point where something will have to break - one way or another.I talk about all that - and much more - with my guest, Nigel Gould Davis, a Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Why Ukraine hit Kremniy EL now, and why it matters.This is not just another oil depot or barracks. Not another ammo dump or drone cache. A microelectronics plant. It is the very definition of hitting the archer, not just the arrows. The target was Kremniy EL in Bryansk, a major Russian manufacturer of military-use microelectronics near the Ukrainian border. On March 10, Ukraine's military said it hit the facility with Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said the plant produced electronics and components for Russian missiles — the same missiles, as he put it, that hit Ukrainian cities, villages and civilians. (Reuters)Reuters reports that Ukraine described Kremniy EL as “a critically important link in the chain of production of Russian high precision weapons,” while the General Staff said “significant damage” to production facilities had been recorded, with the full extent still being assessed. This was not opportunistic, but industrial warfare, targeted and deliberate. On today's show, guest host Bert Zipperer is in conversation with Negin Owliaei, editor-in-chief of Truthout, about the war that the US and Israel launched on Iran last weekend. On Saturday, Owliaei woke up to dozens of text messages from her family in Tehran announcing the bombardment of their city. Since then, the US and Israel have killed more than 1,000 people across Iran and the Middle East, including 150 school children. Owliaei says that she is frustrated by the public discourse about Iran and the way that the language of “preemptive strikes” and “imminent threats,” sanitizes war. She reminds listeners that there were signs that the US was gearing up for an attack on Iran and that it costs the nation $1 billion per day to wage this unjust and illegal war. She insists that “just because it's started, doesn't mean it needs to go on” and “every minute we can shorten this war is a success.” In her latest article for Truthout, she discusses the need for resistance and support for grassroots organizing like Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, Taxpayers Against Genocide, and No Tech for Apartheid. They also discuss Nowruz (the Spring holiday in Iran), the history of the 1953 CIA-backed coup, the deportation of Iranians following the 12-day US-Israel war on Iran last summer, and the Women, Life, Freedom movement. She wants people to understand that everything that's going on domestically has a foreign policy effect.
