Andy Williams and Sean Wilson from Frame to Frame podcast join Flixwatcher to review Andy's choice Son of Rambow. Son of Rambow (2007) is a British comedy coming of age film written and directed by Garth (Sing) Jennings. Set over a summer in the 1980s, Will (Bill Milner) is a quiet and shy 11-year-old who lives with his religious family where TV is banned. He meets Lee (Will Poulter), an older and possibly the worst behaved boy in school who is left home alone with his older brother. Lee sees an opportunity for Will to be his stuntman in a film he making inspired by First Blood for a competition and they form a friendship. Son of Rambow is a charming, sweet slice of 1980s nostalgia. Will Poulter is clearly a star in the making and the film within a film is equally as charming. Recommendability for Son of Rambow was very high, even for first time watcher Andy, slightly lower repeat viewing scores give an overall rating of 4.35. Allyson finally watches Son of Rambow and learns a little about childhood Mike. Will she agree with him that this movie successfully captures the feeling of those early meaningful friendships or will the generation and gender gap not make it relatable at all. Mike schools us on ADR and the history of the Hammer & Tongs producing team. Will Allyson agree that right out of the gate in his film debut that Will Poulter was destined to be a star? Was Rocketman a better movie than Bohemian Rhapsody or was it a MUCH better movie than Bohemian Rhapsody? Will Allyson mercilessly mock Mike's attempt at a poignent Marcus Parks wrap up? For the Disney+ series WandaVision, cinematographer Jess Hall had the opportunity to create the most avant-garde looking project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jess explored every era of sitcom television to create seven different looks for WandaVision, ranging from the 1950's all the way through the 2000's. Each episode's look came down to researching the film stock, lenses, aspect ratio, the lighting, and whether it was shot with three cameras or a single camera. WandaVision director Matt Shakman was able to give Jess plenty of sitcom television research material and ideas, since Jess did not grow up around American T.V. One of the biggest visual touchstones for Jess for the earliest episodes of WandaVision was viewing a print from the original negative of the 1960's show, Bewitched. He found the black and white image to look warmer than modern day black and white- the contrast in the whites weren't quite as cold. Jess tested a number of vintage lenses and ended up using 47 different lenses over nine episodes, even having Panavision create a set of lenses reconstructed from older lens elements. He also used lighting technology that fit each time period, including early diffusion techniques over the lights to create the look. Jess grew up in England and studied film at St. Martins School of Art, embracing film more as an expressive art form. After graduating, he began shooting shorts and commercials, and then had the opportunity to shoot his first feature film, Stander, with director Bronwen Hughes. Stander is a biopic about a police officer in apartheid South Africa who becomes a bank robber. Jess' next film was Son of Rambow, a coming-of-age story about two boys making a home movie. Jess and Son of Rambow director Garth Jennings went to St. Martins together. Jennings carefully storyboarded the whole movie, but once they were actually shooting, they did not strictly follow the storyboards. Jess credits director Edgar Wright with being the most accurate storyboard-to-execution director he's ever worked with, which is important because Wright likes to work fast with many setups and quick cuts. On the movie Hot Fuzz, Jess accomplished over 30 setups per day, and famously did 50 setups in one day. He would try to light the room simply, and worked with camera operators who were used to shooting fast action movies. For the film Transcendence, cinematographer turned director Wally Pfister asked Jess to shoot his first film as a director, after seeing Jess' work on Brideshead Revisited. Jess was flattered, and found it wonderful to be able to communicate in a technical shorthand and to see up close how another DP works and thinks. Without wishing to sound sycophantic, it's hard to imagine a more humble talent that Garth Jennings. During this episode, he and Edith discuss many of his extraordinary creative endeavours - though on hearing the conversation you'd be forgiven for thinking he'd had next to nothing to do with any of them at all. Don't be fooled. Having founded production company Hammer & Tongs with Dominic Leung and Nick Goldsmith in 1993, Garth has been instrumental in a string of iconic music videos and also written and directed Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, Son of Rambow and most recently Sing. Oh yes, he's penned a children's book too. Expect music from composer Joby Talbot, Blur, Fatboy Slim, Betty Wright and more.
We are very excited here at Soundtracking that we have teamed up with EE, the headline sponsor of the EE British Academy Film Awards, to create a series of special podcasts over the next few months. In that time, we will explore the minds and experiences of BAFTA talent and we start the partnership this week with past EE Rising Star Award winner, Will Poulter. For one so young, Will has already built up a mighty impressive CV. Having made his breakthrough in Son Of Rambow back in 2007, the 24-year-old has since had significant roles in Maze Runner, We're The Millers, War Machine and The Revenant. His most recent outing was in Detroit, in which he plays a racist and sadistic police officer involved in a shocking case of brutality during the city's 1967 race riots. It's a performance of stunning depth and maturity - and one that may yet see him nominated for an Oscar. All of these films are interesting from a musical perspective too - from the 80s Rambow soundtrack to Cave / Ellis vehicle War Machine and The Revenant, which was score by Ryuicho Sakomoto, Alva Noto and Bryce Dessner from The National. We'll also hear music from The Cure, Ben E King, Tracy Chapman and Toto.

Welcome to Episode 12 where Stace takes over the editing reigns for the first time (and shows Iz up by getting it done bang on time).Apologies for the sound issues in this episode which we wil have sorted out for next time :)Before they get stuck into the main topic of a Bristol Con preview, the girls talk about Rock Star, Dr Who doing Shakespeare, Baby Boomers at BristolCon and online, the Gotham Knights trailer and the Golden Champagne Glass Awards 2008 (vote Geek Syndicate!!).Reviews include Maintenance Vol 2, Ms Marvel #25, Dr Who Season 4 Eps 1 & 2, CJ7, and Everybody's Dead #2. This section witnesses Iz inadvertantly insulting Steve Coogan (she didn't mean to) while going mad over Son of Rambow, Stace losing her mind over not having Fillerbunny, and the Racks being divided over the new Who companion.Iz very rudely dominates the Top of the Racks section with a 12 minute hysteria fit over the best-birthday-present-in-the-whole-world, but makes up for it by also choosing Pushing Daisies which the girls bond over. Stace drops two (TWO!) titles in her Tail and Iz warns of the perils of watching Superhero Movie. For the main topic, the Racks chat about which creators/ writers / artists they are most looking forward to seeing in Bristol, and for the first time ever, both Racks like each others choice for Rack Music.
