What happens when a classic modern “Western” like First Blood is reimagined for a world where moral clarity has collapsed? In this episode, Jacob Krueger analyzes Ari Aster's Eddington in comparison to First Blood to reveal how theme drives character, action, dialogue, and structure when adapting within a genre.

MUSICRoger Daltrey of The Who is now SIR Roger Daltrey. He was knighted by Prince William at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. It's in recognition of not only his musical achievements, but also his charity work. Here he is on the award, and what his younger self and band would've thought back in the day. https://consequence.net/2025/12/sir-roger-daltrey-knighted/ Sharon Osbourne has given her first interview since the death of her husband Ozzy this past July.Appearing Wednesday on the British TV show Piers Morgan Uncensored, hosted by her longtime friend, she opened up about his health struggles, doing his final show this past July 5th in Birmingham, England, their last conversations and much more. You can watch the show on YouTube, and here are a few excerpts:Sharon Osbourne on the last two weeks of Ozzy's life. OC:...in seven years. :27 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was so happy Piers afterwards. And he kept looking at the papers and he goes to me, 'I never knew so many people like me.' But that was the way he was. I mean, he knew he was famous, but not to the amount that people loved him. It's a whole different thing. And he was just so happy. Happier than we'd seen him in seven years."Sharon Osbourne on dreams Ozzy was having the last week of his life. OC:...he was ready. :26 [Courtesy of Piers Morgan Uncensored]"He was having dreams the last week of his life. He was seeing people that he never knew. I said, 'Well, what kind of people?' He goes, 'All different people. And I just keep walking and walking and I'm seeing all these different people every night. And I go back there and I'm looking at these people and they're looking at me and nobody's talking.' And he he knew. He was ready." Sharon also talked about the first time she and Ozzy met, when they fell in love, how she will never want to get married again, how if she didn't have kids she would have killed herself when he died, and the thing she misses most is holding his hand.On a lighter note, she also talked about how she wanted to get back at Roger Waters for the negative things he said about Ozzy after he died. And that was by sending him a Tiffany box filled with feces, which she used to do to critics who wrote negative reviews about Ozzy's shows without being there. When she did, it was her infant son Jack's poop that would be used. She ultimately decided against it, saying, “Even that is a waste, to send [crap] to him. It's a waste because he's really insignificant. But I just thought, anybody that passes has a family… you don't do that.” (Sharon's not the first musician's wife to do that. Paul and Linda McCartney sent some of their daughter Stella's poop to a journalist who earned their trust, then betrayed them.)Going forward, Sharon says she's continuing to work on an Ozzy bio-pic and that she knows who she wants to play him. When asked if it was Yunglbud she didn't confirm nor deny.https://youtu.be/aaLMsEJKZEQ Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E has been donated to the Royal College of Music London by Peter Freedman, who paid $6,010,000 for it at an auction in 2020. But there are plenty of other films that spark the same argument, "Is this actually a Christmas movie?" Here are 13 more:1. Every "Harry Potter" movie (2001 - 2011). All the "Potter" flicks . . . with the possible exception of the last one . . . have some kind of yuletide vibe . . . or at least a wintry one.2. "Batman Returns" (1992). One of the big set pieces is the lighting of the Gotham Christmas tree.3. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999). Even though it was released in July, it takes place over Christmas.4. "Gremlins" (1984). This one has Christmas written all over it. And also little green, murderous demons.5. "First Blood" (1982). The first of the "Rambo" films has a Christmas tree in the background of one scene. So . . . Christmas movie!!!6. "Trading Places" (1983). There's a Christmas party, and Dan Aykroyd as a drunken Santa waving a handgun. But it doesn't end on December 25th. If it's a Christmas movie, then it also qualifies as a New Year's movie.7. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005). This one takes place during the Christmas season in L.A. And it was released in November.8. "Edward Scissorhands" (1990). Kind of a no-brainer.9. "Lethal Weapon" (1987). Another one of those action movies that HAPPENS to take place around Christmas.10. "Rocky" (1976). This might be the greatest American holiday film of all time, because it includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. And also punching.11. "Hook" (1991). The scenes in the real world, outside Neverland, are set at Christmas. 12. "Iron Man 3" (2013). The whole movie plays out around Christmas.13. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993). Menarche- a girl's first period- shapes how we experience womanhood for the rest of our lives, and the lack of initiation most of us experience is itself an initiation. In this culture that has fractured from the rites and wisdom of our grandmothers, where so many of us met our first period with confusion or shame, how do we begin to heal this tender threshold- for our daughters, and for the younger version of ourselves? In a conversation brimming with practical suggestions, my herb teacher Kami McBride- who has led countless women's circles, developed and taught a class for cycling women, and even written a book on menstruation- shares her decades of experience and insight. Send us a textWe close out our “Walking the Fine Line” theme with 1982's First Blood, the first film to feature John Rambo, as portrayed by Sylvester Stallone. Karl's shakeup this week was that his film must feature a major social commentary, and this one certainly fits the bill. The film tells the story of Rambo, who is trying to return to a normal life after returning from Vietnam, only to run afoul of local sheriff (played by Brian Dennehy) who wants him out of town.In this episode we discuss the treatment of Vietnam vets after returning home, as well as how we would fare if we had to survive in the woods for an extended period of time.

Nothing is over! We just wanted to get something to eat! Let's dive into First Blood, the kickoff to Sylvester Stallone's second successful movie franchise behind Rocky. We discuss the movie's earnest approach and social commentary while also leaning into the hilarity of how alternate, and very real, casting options would have played John Rambo, including Al Pacino and Mr. Slave from South Park. Thanks for listening to our nostalgic movie podcast. Please tell your friends and as always, be kind, rewind, relax, and enjoy the show.

Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY THAT MAY DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. Squib Games Season (S15) continues with an 80's cable classic and special effects extravaganza, the eponymous F/X (1986). Director Robert Mandel best known for his 1992 drama School Ties had no major studio film to his credit when he was hired to direct the two top tiered Bryans: Aussie sexpot Bryan Brown as the Hollywood special effects guru Roland “Rollie” Tyler, an immigrant framed by crooked law enforcement in an intricate double-fake out murder leaving him a marked man, and Brian Dennehy (returning to the action genre, see First Blood from earlier this season) as Detective Leo McCarthy who plays by his own rulebook and likely soon up for retirement who suspects Rollie might be innocent. Pod favs Diane Venora (Bird, Heat, The Insider) has a minor role as the aspiring actress love interest and Tom Noonan (Manhunter this same year) plays a tall goon. Surprisingly for an action-intrigue movie set in the 1980s, there are a pleasant number of professional women getting the job done, although those who pop most on screen are Rollie's and Det. McCarthy's respective sidekicks. Mixing reveals on how effects are done in real life with FX in the reality of the movie's world provides a great primer for this season's gun play as well as lets the movie's hero exact lethal revenge without having to hold a gun. Such a fun concept, the premise spawned a sequel five years later starring the two Bryans and five years after that a forty-episode, two-season Canadian TV series starring neither Bry/i/an. The hosts this ep spitball alternate castings for turning F/X from a action-thriller into a b-movie gorefest; Ken's feels safe to share his big glasses frame fetish; Ryan's presents a theory on why straight women wore out copies of their VHS's; and Thomas gets the opportunity to mention both The Rage: Carrie 2 and Psycho III in nearly the same breath. Jack, this season's visiting guest host and inspiration for Squib Season, is off again this week on some continental op but will return for next episode with the book report for Miller's Crossing. Fun final fact: F/X is the first movie since TGTPTU Season 4's Cage/Uncaged to have a forward slash (or a “stroke” for our speakers of British English) in its title. That prior movie, of course, was our first John Woo film covered. In this episode of Drinks and a Movie, I'm reviewing First Blood (1982), the film that introduced the world to John Rambo, and compare it to David Morrell's 1972 novel that inspired it. We'll look at how the movie streamlined and reshaped the source material, why Stallone's performance became iconic, and how the book's darker, more complex themes differ from the Hollywood version. Along the way, I'll talk about the production history, the cultural context of post-Vietnam America, and why First Blood remains one of the most striking action thrillers of its time. Grab a drink and join me for this breakdown of one of cinema's most famous adaptations.
Ten years before he made First Blood, Director Ted Kotcheff gave the world Wake in Fright, a grueling Australian flick that wrestled with the horrors of Australia booz culture and alpha male mayhem. 1985 was the year Sylvester Stallone went from Hollywood heavyweight to undisputed box office king. With Rocky IV on one side and Rambo: First Blood Part II on the other, he wasn't just riding the wave of 80s action; he was the wave. And while First Blood had been a surprisingly thoughtful thriller about trauma, alienation, and a veteran's struggle to reintegrate into society, its sequel shed all subtlety like a spent shell casing. What we got instead was a high-octane, Reagan-era fever dream of exploding arrows, shirtless jungle warfare, and a hero who could take down entire armies with little more than a knife, a bow, and a steely stare. Strap into your parachutr and prepare for our Rambo: First Blood Part II ReviewOn this week's Born to Watch, the boys dive into Stallone's red-bandanaed return to Vietnam. Whitey sets the scene: this isn't just a movie, it's the beginning of the "one-man war" subgenre that would dominate until Die Hard flipped the script in 1988. Damo admits he's barely watched it compared to the rest of the team, just four times, making him the weakest link in the Rambo chain, while Dan fondly recalls a childhood of VHS replays and backyard re-enactments, complete with shirtless flexing and imaginary M-60s.The episode kicks off with laughs about the film's working title, "Second Blood," which the team insists is far better than what we ended up with. From there, the conversation barrels through the film's unforgettable trailer, essentially a three-minute version of the movie that gives away every major set piece. But then again, in 1985, you weren't dissecting trailers on YouTube; you were catching glimpses of them before Back to the Future or in the lobby of Hoyts. As always, Colonel Trautman gets his share of love. Richard Crenna's grizzled commander was the heart of First Blood, but here the boys agree he's been badly sidelined, emasculated by slimy bureaucrats and robbed of his best lines. Whitey argues that Stallone intentionally clipped Trautman's wings to keep the spotlight on himself, before realising by Rambo III that the series needed more Crenna.Villains are in no short supply: Charles Napier's Murdoch oozes bureaucratic slime, Steven Berkoff delivers Cold War menace as a sneering Russian general (forehead mole and all), and Martin Kove, fresh off The Karate Kid, simmers in the background as a mercenary who doesn't get nearly enough to do. And then there's Julia Nickson as Co, whose accent is so gloriously bad it's become immortal. Her "What mean expendable?" line sends the boys into hysterics, though they're quick to admit she's stunning on screen and essential to Rambo's fleeting attempt at love. The set pieces get the full treatment too: Rambo parachuting into the jungle, the bamboo cage of leeches, the patrol boat ambush, and the climactic showdown with a hulking Russian gunship that feels like the final boss in a video game. Logic rarely applies, Rambo seems oddly immune to electrocution and, at one point, appears in what the boys can only describe as a "ceremonial Vietnamese G-string", but that's half the fun. Unlike Cobra, which the podcast tore apart in a recent episode, First Blood Part II manages to be outrageous without ever becoming dull. The team also dives into the film's legacy. Box office juggernaut? Absolutely, $300 million worldwide on a $44 million budget. Awards darling? Not quite. While it picked up an Oscar nomination for sound editing, it swept the Razzies, winning for Worst Picture, Worst Actor, and even Worst Original Song. That song, Peace in Our Life, penned by Frank Stallone, gets roasted at length—described as "mesmerisingly bad" and “patriotic cheese that makes Bon Jovi sound poetic.”But for all its flaws, there's an undeniable joy in watching Rambo: First Blood Part II. Whitey compares it to the Avengers: Endgame of 1985, pure crowd-pleasing cinema where audiences would've cheered out loud when Rambo vaporised a guard with an explosive arrow. The film may be ridiculous, but it's never boring. As always, there are detours into Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (unanimously despised), A View to a Kill (fondly remembered for Roger Moore inventing snowboarding to the Beach Boys), and Corey Haim's werewolf flick Silver Bullet. There's also a spirited listener voicemail from loyal fan Chupperz, who demands a proper definition of "cameo" for Film School for FW, and a reminder that even when the team is tearing something apart, it's always done with affection.By the time they hit The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, the verdict is clear: Stallone's hair deserves its own credit, Trautman deserves better, and Rambo: First Blood Part II is the kind of dumb, overblown, endlessly rewatchable 80s action that Born to Watch was made for.So if you love muscle-bound mayhem, Cold War villains, or just want to hear a bunch of Aussie legends laugh, argue, and celebrate a truly explosive piece of cinema history, this is the episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Rambo: First Blood Part II a misunderstood classic or just overblown propaganda? Would you rather ride shotgun in the gunship or sneak through the jungle with the bow and arrow? Does this sequel outshine First Blood, or did Stallone lose something when subtlety gave way to spectacle? We discuss the differences between his novel and the film adaptation, his work on the novelizations for the sequels, and his experiences on set during the filming of Rambo III.David also shares fascinating insights into his academic influences, particularly Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", and how the Rambo phenomenon helped bring awareness to PTSD and the treatment of Vietnam veterans. Send us a textThis week's moving picture was selected by guest host (and Season 15's Squib Games curator/raison d'être) Jack, canonically a Ted Kaczynski stan, as confirmed by his pick CLEARCUT (1991). And so the pod returns to Canada (a.k.a. America's sombrero) and Canadian lore with another émigré director's first North America feature-length film (see Hard Targét ep from two weeks ago for our prior), this time with a story originally told in the Canadian novelist M. T. Kelly's A Dream Like Mine about Canadian First Nations people fighting to maintain the sanctity of their land against industry and classified in the movie's hard media BluRay release as “folk horror” by Sevrin in its 15-disc All the Haunts Be Ours collection. Cold War Polish-famous director Ryszard Bugajski was chosen for his political provocateur Polish pictures (after a stint directing Canadian TV) and modifies the 1987 novel, moving it from mercury poisoning and mining to the timber industry after the recent Oka standoff (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oka_Crisis) and hence finding a title, which at least one host this ep finds oxymoronic. Bugajski also credits himself with cutting a lot of the dialogue from the screenplay to let the film visually provide exposition. The film stars Graham Greene--which is why host Ryan's grandfather saw the limited release film that by the 2000's had only two extant prints (one copy was about to be disposed and why the transfer on the BluRay and streaming has 35mm film's cue marks, a.k.a. cigarette burns)--as a trickster spirit or actual human person (depending on whether lead actor or director was asked) who challenges the film's White protagonist and lawyer played by Ron Lea who's failed to protect the land against mill owner Bud Rickets played by Battlestar Galactica's (the newer, good one) own Michael Hogan (not to be confused with Jack Nance who concurrently white haired and sporting a moustache by a river was at this time portraying Pete in Twin Peaks, you know, “Wrapped in plastic.” and “There was a fish in the perculator.”). Greene's Arthur (no last name like Cher or Prince) as either/both/neither water spirit or direct-action First Nations radical coerces the lawyer to kidnap the mill owner, which leads to a few deaths and some skin peeled off Rickets' leg. The film is lensed by François Protat, who'd shot Weekend and Bernie's two years prior for First Blood director (and Canadian for sneeze sound effect) Ted Kotcheff. The entire folk horror or eco terror or supernatural revenge or suspense film resolves with an expected but undelivered whip pan to Rod Serling smoking a cigarette whilst giving an enigmatic, summative moral of events witnessed. This ep goes big on host Tall Ken trivia as he finds his notepad; reveals his chainsaw approach to episode editing; sees in Greene's jeans and sneakers attire the spirit of Jerry Seinfeld (contemporaneous character, rather than actor or comedian or present-day Netflix movie director); and explains how he identifies people and sizes them up. Additionally, Ryan, Thomas, and Jack have sane things to say. We can get one thing out of the way right up top: James DeMonaco is from Staten Island. Seeing Rocky Balboa on the big screen as a kid was mind-blowing; seeing Sylvester Stallone take a story of such a familiar kind of guy and make it into an Oscar-winning mega-franchise for the ages was life-altering. While DeMonaco is best known for his stealthily political horror films, his love of Rocky even made it into a coming-of-age project called THIS IS THE NIGHT, set around the release of ROCKY III. He and Jordan get into the importance of seeing a familiar milieu on screen, and get into the motivation behind DeMonaco's current film, THE HOME, a psychological horror movie starring Pete Davidson, set at an eldercare facility. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the new Netflix series HUNTING WIVES. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Keep up with the show on Instagram and Bluesky.
This week on The Rugby Pod, the lads dive into a stormy weekend of rugby. They break down the Lions 27–19 bashing against a very average Wallabies team in Brisbane, questioning the Aussie preparation, selections, and desire. We also look at some big performances from Tadhg Beirne and Tom Curry and whether Farrell might look to make some changes as they expect a big backlash in Melbourne. The lads react to the Lions' midweek team to face the First Nations & Pasifika XV, and speculate on squad rotation ahead of the second test. Elsewhere, England extend their win streak to seven after battering the USA 40–5 in a delayed, beer-fuelled and stormy Washington D.C. Wales finally appoint Steve Tandy as head coach, and the Springboks, All Blacks, and Gregor Brown all make headlines.
