Happy Towel Day! Yes, an episode long-in-gestation, since Johnny told Andrew there was a towel day and it was directly related to one of Andrew's core art loves. We go sweary talking Sam Rockwell, The Office, Garth Jennings' career, waking up early for a screening of this film and Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted (And subsequent commencement speech). Grab a towel, stick out your thumb and don't panic.
The gang doesn't panic this week as they review sci-fa adventure movie spawned from the beloved book series, spawned by the beloved radio show, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Arriving at it's final desination more than 20 years after Douglas Adams agreed to sell the rights for a movie, and 4 years after his death, this movie has its fair share of naysayers, and an even larger share of adoring fans. Starring household names like Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, and John Malkovich, it's hard to hate this light hearted (yet existential dread-filled ) ride. Sing 2 is a 2021 animated jukebox musical comedy from animation studio Illumination. It was directed by Garth Jennings, and featuring an ensemble cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Bono, and various others. A sequel to the original 2016 film Sing, the plot (Such as it was) featured a cast of anthromorphic animal characters attempting to put together a show in the fictional entertainment capital of the world, Redshore City. The film itself released to mixed reviews from critics, but was a box office success, which would go on to become the highest grossing animated film of 2021.On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome the return of past guest Patrick S. Barry for a screening of Sing 2, while once again neglecting to view the original. Join them for a general sense of confusion and dread over the anthomorph-inhabited world Illumination created, wonder and befuddlement over Bono's barely present American accent, and for Scott to become thoroughly broken over the course of the movie....with Lilz and Scott!
Garth Jennings's adaptation of THE HITCHHIKERS'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY starts much like the source material, when the Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, before veering off on a contrived and underwritten love triangle which makes this 2005 sci-fi comedy only moderately successful. Hapless Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) and his friend, the experienced galactic journalist Ford Prefect (Mos Def), find themselves aboard a stolen spaceship piloted by two-headed Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell), depressed robot Marvin (Alan Rickman, and Trillian (Zooey Deschanel), the only other survivor of Earth's destruction.Whilst some of the surreal humour and wit of Douglas Adams's original creation remains intact in glimpses, we're never made to feel the tragedy or sadness of Arthur's situation which was a key element of the books, and a plot which takes a long time to ago anywhere never really does. Freeman's Englishman everyman routine is perfectly suited, Mos Def is a surprisingly good alien but unfortunately Zooey Deschanel is awful and her character is thinly sketched at best.

This week, Jeanette and special guest, Myles Webb, began a journey of movie franchise no one asked for with the 2016 and 2021 animated comedy films, Sing and Sing 2. Written and directed by Garth Jennings, who voiced Miss Crawly, Sing focused on an owner of a run down theater who holds a singing competition in order to bring business back to his theater. When he spots a mistake on the flyer to promote a 100K prize, he lies to the performers in hopes to make enough money to cover it. In Sing 2, Buster Moon and the singers try to win a chance to perform at Redshore Hill, the hottest spot a singer can perform; however, after a failed attempt, one of the performers mention having a show that include Clay Calloway, a legendary rock star who has not been seen in 15 years. Once the group is green lit, Buster does whatever it takes to find Calloway and get him to perform Special thanks to Myles Webb for this funny episode.
Sean is joined by George to discuss his chat with the director of the awesome movie 'Sing 2', Garth Jennings! Find out if Garth realises just how popular the film is on social media, how he deals with directing superstars and hear about George's borderline obsession with the band U2 (ask your parents!) In Sing 2, Can-do koala Buster Moon and his all-star cast of animal performers prepare to launch a dazzling stage extravaganza in the glittering entertainment capital of the world. There's just one hitch -- he has to find and persuade the world's most reclusive rock star to join them. What begins as Buster's dream of big-time success soon becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart. Hearing from: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly & Garth Jennings

Sing 2 is a 2021 American computer-animated jukebox musical comedy film written and directed by Garth Jennings, co-directed by Christophe Lourdelet, and stars the ensemble cast consisting of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Jennings, Peter Serafinowicz, Jennifer Saunders, and Nick Offerman, reprising their roles from the first film. The sequel also features new characters voiced by Bobby Cannavale, Pharrell Williams, Halsey, Chelsea Peretti, Letitia Wright, Eric André, Adam Buxton, and Bono. Like the previous film, Sing 2 features songs from many artists, most of which are performed diegetically in that classic computer-animated jukebox musical comedy film style that we all know and love. The story is set after the events of the previous film, where Buster Moon (McConaughey) and his group put on a show in Redshore City (Las Vegas) while working to impress an entertainment mogul and enlist a reclusive rock star (Bono) to perform. It's as good as these things tend to get, folks (adults).
Holly McClure closes off the year 2021 with reviews on several Hollywood movies and shares an interview with the director of Sing 2, Garth Jennings.
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is a friend of the show, returning to discuss his sequel to a massive family favourite in households across the globe - not least Edith's. Garth Jennings found a winning formula with his joyous animation, Sing, and has thankfully managed to recreate it with Sing 2. In addition to an all-star cast reprising their roles from the first film, Garth also managed to persuade none other than Bono to play a reclusive rock star and allow him to rework some classic U2 songs. He shares a couple of lovely anecdotes about that too ...
A sequel to the toe-tapping, pop song-stuffed animated animal movie Sing that came out a few years ago is finally here, with Taron Egerton and company sipping their honey tea after belting out yet more catchier-than-catchier radio hits. Speaking to Ali about their favourite karaoke songs and much more are Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll and the writer-director behind it all, the wonderful Garth Jennings.

Some wicked reviews this way come, and the first is our contentious debate over The Tragedy of Macbeth, a new A24 black-and-white adaptation of the classic Shakespearean play, solely directed by Joel Coen and starring Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, and many more. Afterward, we clear our throats for Sing 2, the animated sequel to Illumination's 2016 Sing, again directed by Garth Jennings and featuring a massive cast of familiar voices. Last, we get lost in our thoughts regarding The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut (she also adapts the screenplay from the eponymous novel), which stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, and more. Written and directed by Garth Jennings, the highly anticipated SING 2 sees the return of Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), the can-do koala bear who enters his team in a singing competition led by promotion king, Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale). However, in order to entice Crystal's investment, Moon suggests that he can get legendary (and reclusive) rock star, Clay Callaway (Bono) to star in his production. Peaking Crystal's interest, Moon and his friends suddenly have a mere three weeks to develop an entirely new production while convincing Callaway to come out of retirement. In this 1on1, we speak to Jennings about designing the sequel, working with Bono and whether or not a song can save your life.
For the Disney+ series WandaVision, cinematographer Jess Hall had the opportunity to create the most avant-garde looking project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jess explored every era of sitcom television to create seven different looks for WandaVision, ranging from the 1950's all the way through the 2000's. Each episode's look came down to researching the film stock, lenses, aspect ratio, the lighting, and whether it was shot with three cameras or a single camera. WandaVision director Matt Shakman was able to give Jess plenty of sitcom television research material and ideas, since Jess did not grow up around American T.V. One of the biggest visual touchstones for Jess for the earliest episodes of WandaVision was viewing a print from the original negative of the 1960's show, Bewitched. He found the black and white image to look warmer than modern day black and white- the contrast in the whites weren't quite as cold. Jess tested a number of vintage lenses and ended up using 47 different lenses over nine episodes, even having Panavision create a set of lenses reconstructed from older lens elements. He also used lighting technology that fit each time period, including early diffusion techniques over the lights to create the look. Jess grew up in England and studied film at St. Martins School of Art, embracing film more as an expressive art form. After graduating, he began shooting shorts and commercials, and then had the opportunity to shoot his first feature film, Stander, with director Bronwen Hughes. Stander is a biopic about a police officer in apartheid South Africa who becomes a bank robber. Jess' next film was Son of Rambow, a coming-of-age story about two boys making a home movie. Jess and Son of Rambow director Garth Jennings went to St. Martins together. Jennings carefully storyboarded the whole movie, but once they were actually shooting, they did not strictly follow the storyboards. Jess credits director Edgar Wright with being the most accurate storyboard-to-execution director he's ever worked with, which is important because Wright likes to work fast with many setups and quick cuts. On the movie Hot Fuzz, Jess accomplished over 30 setups per day, and famously did 50 setups in one day. He would try to light the room simply, and worked with camera operators who were used to shooting fast action movies. For the film Transcendence, cinematographer turned director Wally Pfister asked Jess to shoot his first film as a director, after seeing Jess' work on Brideshead Revisited. Jess was flattered, and found it wonderful to be able to communicate in a technical shorthand and to see up close how another DP works and thinks. This week we discuss the 2016 musical-comedy-drama-fantasy (who knows?) SING STREET. Astrid Goldsmith is an award-winning stop-motion animator. After tuition from Great Uncle Bulgaria and 12 years of hand-making models for other people - including Garth Jennings (for “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”), the boy band Blue and the unrelenting Duracell Bunny - she made her debut solo film, “Squirrel Island”. Astrid’s animations question the impact of human policy on the natural world, and her latest commissioned film, “Quarantine”, was nominated for the Debut Director Award at the Edinburgh TV Festival’s New Voice Awards. In this in-depth conversation, we talk grey squirrels vs. red squirrels, badgers as a focus for nationalism, how “good and bad” animals are an unfair human construct, and how anthropomorphic animation lends itself perfectly to deeper reflection about us and about our diverse ecosystem. After a spirited opening discussion about Disney/Pixar the boys dive headfirst into Black Mirror's classic headfuckery and dole out their middling experiences watching(playing?) through it's latest offering. Features surprising tangents to Richard Kelly's filmography and the work of Garth Jennings (yes, THE Garth Jennings!). Tune in next week when we finally watch Pixar's Cars.

Without wishing to sound sycophantic, it's hard to imagine a more humble talent that Garth Jennings. During this episode, he and Edith discuss many of his extraordinary creative endeavours - though on hearing the conversation you'd be forgiven for thinking he'd had next to nothing to do with any of them at all. Don't be fooled. Having founded production company Hammer & Tongs with Dominic Leung and Nick Goldsmith in 1993, Garth has been instrumental in a string of iconic music videos and also written and directed Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, Son of Rambow and most recently Sing. Oh yes, he's penned a children's book too. Expect music from composer Joby Talbot, Blur, Fatboy Slim, Betty Wright and more.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talk about the big budget live-action film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from 2005. Garth Jennings made his directorial debut with this sci-fi comedy. After drinking a load of pints with his best friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def), Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) learns Earth's true origin story. All the while, he tries to rekindle a flirtation with Tricia McMillan (Zooey Deschanel). The late Douglas Adams spent much of the end of his life struggling to get this story made into a fancy Hollywood motion picture. Ironically, his premature death helped kick this flick into high gear. After budget cuts and Jim Carrey dropping out of the project (he would have played Zaphod Beeblebrox), what we have onscreen is a movie at war with itself. Its adapting a radio play/book/BBC series that's short on plot and long on character; to compensate, the film attempts to goose things up with an actual villain (!!) and shoot-em-up scenes that contribute to the movie's bloated 109 minute run-time. The directing and producing duo Hammer and Tongs (aka Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith) have a new DVD out which features their various music videos for artists such as Blur, R.E.M., Beck, Fatboy Slim, Pulp and Vampire Weekend. The collection also features various audio commentaries from band members featured in the collection, including Jarvis Cocker, Graham Coxon, Norman Cook and Ezra Koenig. Garth and Nick first started making videos in the early 1990s for dance act SL2 and gradually began to make promos for acts such as Pulp (Help the Aged), Eels (Cancer for the Cure), Fatboy Slim (Right Here, Right Now), Supergrass (Pumping on Your Stereo), Blur (Coffee & TV), R.E.M. (Imitation of Life), Beck (Lost Cause: Version 2) and Vampire Weekend (Cousins). There are also various short films on the DVD that showcase their work from 1998 until 2009, including behind-the-scenes footage from the various videos and their two feature films so far, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and Son of Rambow (2008). I spoke with Garth and Nick recently at their offices in North London about their career so far.File Download (0:00 min / 16 MB)
If you were creating an indie comedy about two London boys coming into their own in the 80's, the last title you'd use is Son of Rambow – unless you're writer-director Garth Jennings (The Hitchkikers Guide to the Galaxy).
