Her novels have been named best books of summer by People, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, InStyle, PopSugar, BuzzFeed, Goodreads, and others. We talked diversity and representation in books, "unlikable" female protagonists, and how to make the perfect iced tea (naturally). Plus, we’re All A-Twitter about the #TakeTheKnee protest and the sudden shift the movement has taken since 45 inserted himself into the conversation. We're keeping the sports theme going with our Air Horn Salute for a woman in sports journalism who is speaking her mind and not backing down. Listen in!

#14: Through the attic window - Kneeling for Injustice Cellar Door Skeptics brings another opinion episode discussing issues close to home. This episode the duo look at the somehow controversial topic of silent protest by NFL players. It feels this country either does not understand how peaceful protests work or they are just so diluted with their privilege that they don't want to understand the plight of other Americans. This episode looks at what kneeling does as a protest, Trumps statements and how we can continue to see him as a white nationalist supporter, and why it feels that our society wants to continue to marginalize minorities and tell them to be quiet, even though they are a vital part of the success of the nation. Join us for our prospective each week with a new Through the Attic Window. #TakeAKnee #TakeTheKnee #NFL #BlackLivesMatter #Patriotism Subscribe: http://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CellarDoorSkeptics RSS Feed: https://www.spreaker.com/user/8326690/episodes/feed iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics/id1044088575?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 Website: http://cellardoorskeptics.com Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/cellar-door-skeptics Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cellardoorskeptics PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/CellarDoorSkeptics Intro Music: http://aloststateofmind.com/ Links ------ https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-protests-donald-trump-a-team-by-team-look-at-week-3-national-anthem-protests/ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/24/sports/nfl-trump-anthem-protests.html?mcubz=0 http://www.theroot.com/patriotism-is-for-white-people-1818724099
This week we're talking about the 1st Amendment (actually, some of the ideas behind it). One of the "freedoms" the 1st Amendment is supposed to protect is the freedom of speech. In this episode, we question whether or not the freedom of speech actually exists and if so, for whom? Over the past few weeks, we've seen Trump come out against ESPN and, more recently, the NFL over players doing what the 1st amendment calls "the right of the people peaceably to assemble". He reacted (in what's normal Trump fashion at this point) by calling the players S.O.B.s and recommending they be fired for the protests. The players and the internet reacted to that and #takeaknee (and also #taketheknee) was born. We discussed how we felt about this new adaptation of Kaepernick's original protest and intent. We also discussed how we feel about the current state of free speech and how it affects us in aspects of our lives in some surprising ways.

This episode builds upon the recent focus a growth around the NFL boycott and #TakeAKnee protests by revisiting the strategic goal of the movement (to decrease police violence against non-threatening black people). We recap the findings from the July 2016 Harvard produced working paper titled "An Empirical Analysis of Racial Differences in Police Use of Force" as well as a rebuttal Harvard article titled "Roland Fryer is wrong: There is racial bias in shootings by police". We conclude by reinforcing the fact that simply protesting the NFL is not enough. Real change will only come when the black community has the wealth and political clout to demand and win equal treatment under the law. We are still waiting on that first crucial conviction.
