Mr. Chairman, friends and brothers in this first gathering of the National Conference on New Politics. Ladiesand gentlemen. . .can you hear me in the back? (No) I don’t know if the Klan is in here tonight or not with allthe troubles we’re having with these microphones. Seldom if ever. . . .has. . . .we’re still working with it. As I was about to say, seldom if ever has such a diverse and truly ecumenical gathering convened under the egis of politics in our nation, and I want to commend the leadership of the National Conference on NewPolitics for all of the great work that they have done in making this significant convention possible. Indeed byour very nature we affirm that something new is taking place on the American political horizon. We have comehere from the dusty plantations of the Deep South and the depressing ghettos of the North. We have come fromthe great universities and the flourishing suburbs. We have come from Appalachian poverty and from consciousstricken wealth. But we have come. And we have come here because we share a common concern for the moralhealth of our nation. We have come because our eyes have seen through the superficial glory and glitter of our society and observed the coming of judgment. Like the prophet of old, we have read the handwriting on the wall. We have seen our nation weighed in the balance of history and found wanting. We have come because wesee this as a dark hour in the affairs of men.For most of us this is a new mood. We are traditionally the idealists. We are the marchers fromMississippi and Selma and Washington, who staked our lives on the American Dream during the first half of this decade. Many assembled here campaigned lasciviously for Lyndon Johnson in 1964 because we could notstand ideally by and watch our nation contaminated by the 18th Century policies of Goldwaterism. We were thehardcore activists who were willing to believe that Southerners could be reconstructed in the constitutionalimage. We were the dreamers of a dream – that dark yesterdays of mans inhumanity to man would soon betransformed into bright tomorrows of justice. Now it is hard to escape, the disillusionment and betrayal. Our hopes have been blasted and our dreams have been shattered. The promise of a Great Society was shipwreckedoff the coast of Asia, on the dreadful peninsula of Vietnam. The poor, black and white, are still perishing on alonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. What happens to a dream deferred? It leads to bewildering frustration and corroding bitterness.I came to see this in a personal experience here in Chicago last summer. In all the speaking I have donein the United States before varied audiences, including some hostile whites, the only time I have ever been booed was one night in our regular weekly mass meetings by some angry young men of our movement. Now Iwent home that night with an ugly feeling. Selfishly I thought of my suffering and sacrifices over the last twelveyears. Why would they boo one so close to them? But as I lay awake thinking. I finally came to myself. And Icould not for the life of me have less impatience and understanding for those young men. For twelve years, I amothers like me, have held out radiant promises of progress. I had preached to them about my dream. I hadlectured to them about, the not to distant day when they would have freedom, all here, now. I had urged them tohave faith in America and in white society. Their hopes had soared. They were now booing me because they feltthat we were unable to deliver on our promises. They were booing because we had urged them to have faith in people who had too often proved to be unfaithful. They were now hostile because they were watching the dreamthat they had so readily accepted, turn into a frustrating nightmare. This situation is all the more ominous, inview of the rising expectations of men the world over. The deep rumblings that we hear today, the rumblings of discontent, is the thunder of disinherited masses rising from dungeons of oppressions to the bright hills of freedom. All over the world like a fever, freedom is spreading in the widest liberation movement in history. Thegreat masses of people are determined to end the exploitation of their races and lands. And in one majestic chorus they are singing in the worlds of our freedom song, “ain’t gonna let nobody turn us around”. And so the collision course is set. The people cry for freedom and the congress attempts to legislaterepression. Millions, yes billions, are appropriated for mass murder; but the most meager pittance for foreignaid for international development is crushed in the surge of reaction. Unemployment rages at a major depressionlevel in the black ghettos, but the bi-partisan response is an anti-riot bill rather than a serious poverty program. The modest proposals for model cities, rent supplement and rat control, pitiful as they were to began with, getcaught in the maze of congressional inaction. And I submit to you tonight, that a congress that proves to be more anti-negro than anti-rat needs to be dismissed. It seems that our legislative assemblies have adopted Nero as their patron saint and are bent on fiddling while our cities burn. Even when the people persist and in the face of great obstacles, develop indigenous leadership and self-help approaches to their problems and finally tread the forest of bureaucracy to obtain existing governmentfunds, the corrupt political order seeks to crush even this beginning of hope. The case of CDGM in Mississippiis the most publicized example but it is a story repeated many times across our nation. Our own experience here in Chicago is especially painfully present. After an enthusiastic approval by H.E. W’s Department of Adult Education, SCLC began an adult literacy project to aid 1,000 young men and women who have been pushed out of overcrowded ghetto schools, in obtaining basic [literary] skills prerequisite to receiving jobs. We had an agreement with A&P stores for 750 jobs through SCLC’s job program, Operation Breadbasket and had recruited over 500 pupils the first week. At that point CongressmenPaccinski and the Daley machine intervened and demanded that Washington cut off our funds or channel themthrough the machine controlled poverty program in Chicago. Now we have no problem with administrativesupervision, but we do have a desire to be independent of machine control and the Democratic Party patronagenetwork. For this desire for a politically independent approach to the needs of our brothers, our funds are beingstopped as of September 15th and a very meaningful program discontinued. Yes the hour is dark, evil comesfourth in the guise of good. It is a time of double talk when men in high places have a high blood pressure of deceptive rhetoric and an anemia of concrete performance. We cry out against welfare hand outs to the poor but generously approve an oil depletion allowance tomake the rich, richer. Six Mississippi plantations receive more than a million dollars a year, not to plant cotton but no provision is made to feed the tenant farmer who is put out of work by the government subsidy. Thecrowning achievement in hypocrisy must go to those staunch Republicans and Democrats of the Midwest andWest who were given land by our government when they came here as immigrants from Europe. They weregiven education through the land grant colleges. They were provided with agricultural agents to keep themabreast of forming trends, they were granted low interest loans to aid in the mechanization of their farms andnow that they have succeeded in becoming successful, they are paid not to farm and these are the same people that now say to black people, who’s ancestors were brought to this country in chains and who were emancipatedin 1863 without being given land to cultivate or bread to eat; that they must pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. What they truly advocate is Socialism for the rich and Capitalism for the poor. I wish that I could say that this is just a passing phase in the cycles of our nation’s life; certainly times of war, times of reaction throughout the society but I suspect that we are now experiencing the coming to thesurface of a triple prong sickness that has been lurking within our body politic from its very beginning. That isthe sickness of racism, excessive materialism and militarism. Not only is this our nation’s dilemma it is the plaque of western civilization. As early as 1906 W. E. B Dubois prophesized that the problem of the 20th century, would be the problem of the color line, now as we stand two-thirds into this crucial period of historywe know full well that racism is still that hound of hell which dogs the tracks of our civilization. Ever since the birth of our nation, White America has had a Schizophrenic personality on the question of race, she has beentorn between selves. A self in which she proudly profess the great principle of democracy and a self in whichshe madly practices the antithesis of democracy. This tragic duality has produced a strange indecisiveness andambivalence toward the Negro, causing America to take a step backwards simultaneously with every stepforward on the question of Racial Justice; to be at once attracted to the Negro and repelled by him, to love andto hate him. There has never been a solid, unified and determined thrust to make justice a reality for Afro-Americans. The step backwards has a new name today, it is called the white backlash, but the white backlash isnothing new. It is the surfacing of old prejudices, hostilities and ambivalences that have always been there. Itwas caused neither by the cry of black power nor by the unfortunate recent wave of riots in our cities. The white backlash of today is rooted in the same problem that has characterized America ever since the black man landedin chains on the shores of this nation. This does not imply that all White Americans are racist, far from it. Many white people have, through adeep moral compulsion fought long and hard for racial justice nor does it mean that America has made no progress in her attempt to cure the body politic of the disease of racism or that the dogma of racism has beenconsiderably modified in recent years. However for the good of America, it is necessary to refute the idea thatthe dominant ideology in our country, even today, is freedom and equality while racism is just an occasional departure from the norm on the part of a few bigoted extremists. Racism can well be, that corrosive evil thatwill bring down the curtain on western civilization. Arnold Toynesbee has said that some twenty-six civilizationhave risen upon the face of the Earth, almost all of them have descended into the junk heap of destruction. Thedecline and fall of these civilizations, according to Toynesbee, was not caused by external invasion but byinternal decay. They failed to respond creatively to the challenges impingent upon them. If America does notrespond creatively to the challenge to banish racism, some future historian will have to say, that a greatcivilization died because it lacked the soul and commitment to make justice a reality for all men. The second aspect of our afflicted society is extreme materialism, an Asian writer has portrayed our dilemma in candid terms, he says, “you call your thousand material devices labor saving machinery, yet you are forever busy. With the multiplying of your machinery you grow increasingly fatigued, anxious, nervous, dissatisfied. Whatever you have you want more and where ever you are you want to go somewhere else. Your devices are neither time saving nor soul saving machinery. They are so many sharp spurs which urge you on toinvent more machinery and to do more business”. This tells us something about our civilization that cannot be caste aside as a prejudiced charge by an eastern thinker who is jealous of Western prosperity. We cannot escapethe indictment. This does not mean that we must turn back the clock of scientific progress. No one can overlook the wonders that science has wrought for our lives. The automobile will not abdicate in favor of the horse and buggy or the train in favor of the stage coach or the tractor in favor of the hand plow or the scientific method infavor of ignorance and superstition. But our moral lag must be redeemed; when scientific power outruns moral power, we end up with guided missiles and misguided men. When we foolishly maximize the minimum andminimize the maximum we sign the warrant for our own day of doom.It is this moral lag in our thing-oriented society that blinds us to the human reality around us andencourages us in the greed and exploitation which creates the sector of poverty in the midst of wealth. Again wehave diluted ourselves into believing the myth that Capitalism grew and prospered out of the protestant ethic of hard word and sacrifice, the fact is that Capitalism was build on the exploitation and suffering of black slavesand continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – both black and white, both here and abroad. If Negroesand poor whites do not participate in the free flow of wealth within our economy, they will forever be poor, giving their energies, their talents and their limited funds to the consumer market but reaping few benefits andservices in return. The way to end poverty is to end the exploitation of the poor, ensure them a fair share of thegovernment services and the nation’s resources. I proposed recently that a national agency be established to provide employment for everyone needing it. Nothing is more socially inexcusable than unemployment in thisage. In the 30s when the nation was bankrupt it instituted such an agency, the WPA, in the present conditions of a nation glutted with resources, it is barbarous to condemn people desiring work to soul sapping inactivity and poverty. I am convinced that even this one, massive act of concern will do more than all the state police andarmies of the nation to quell riots and still hatreds. The tragedy is, our materialistic culture does not possess thestatesmanship necessary to do it. Victor Hugo could have been thinking of 20th Century America when he wrote, “there’s always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher classes”. The time has come for America to face the inevitable choice between materialism and humanism. We must devote at least as much to our children’s education and the health of the poor as we do to the care of our automobiles andthe building of beautiful, impressive hotels. We must also realize that the problems of racial injustice and economic injustice cannot be solvedwithout a radical redistribution of political and economic power. We must further recognize that the ghetto is adomestic colony. Black people must develop programs that will aid in the transfer of power and wealth into thehands of residence of the ghetto so that they may in reality control their own destinies. This is the meaning of New Politics. People of will in the larger community, must support the black man in this effort. The final phase of our national sickness is the disease of militarism. Nothing more clearly demonstrates our nation’s abuse of military power than our tragic adventure in Vietnam. This war has played havoc with thedestiny of the entire world. It has torn up the Geneva Agreement, it has seriously impaired the United Nations, ithas exacerbated the hatred between continents and worst still between races. It has frustrated our developmentat home, telling our own underprivileged citizens that we place insatiable military demands above their criticalneeds. It has greatly contributed to the forces of reaction in America and strengthened the military industrialcomplex. And it has practically destroyed Vietnam and left thousands of American and Vietnamese youthmaimed and mutilated and exposed the whole world to the risk of nuclear warfare. Above all, the War in Vietnam, has revealed what Senator Fulbright calls, “our nations arrogance of power”. We are arrogant in professing to be concerned about the freedom of foreign nations while not setting our own house in order. Manyof our Senators and Congressmen vote joyously to appropriate billions of dollars for the War in Vietnam andmany of these same Senators and Congressmen vote loudly against a Fair Housing Bill to make it possible for a Negro veteran of Vietnam to purchase a decent home. We arm Negro soldiers to kill on foreign battlefields butoffer little protection for their relatives from beatings and killings in our own South. We are willing to make a Negro 100% of a citizen in Warfare but reduce him to 50% of a citizen on American soil. No war in our nation’s history has ever been so violative of our conscious, our national interest and sodestructive of our moral standing before the world. No enemy has ever been able to cause such damage to us aswe inflict upon ourselves. The inexorable decay of our urban centers has flared into terrifying domestic conflictas the pursuit of foreign war absolves our wealth and energy. Squalor and poverty scar our cities as our militarymight destroy cities in a far off land to support oligarchy, to intervene in domestic conflict. The President who cherishes consensus for peace has intensified the war in answer to a cry to stop the war. It has broughttauntingly to one minutes flying time from China to a moment before the midnight of world conflagration. We are offered a tax for war instead of a plan for peace. Men of reason should no longer debate, the merits of war or means of financing war. They should end the war and restore sanity and humanity to American policy. And if the will of the people continue to be unheeded, all men of free will must create a situation in which the 1967, 68are made a referendum on the War. The American people must have an opportunity to vote into oblivion thosewho cannot detach themselves from militarism, and those that lead us.So we are here because we believe, we hope, we pray that something new might emerge in the politicallife of this nation which will produce a new man, new structures and new institutions and a new life for mankind. I am convinced that this new life will not emerge until our nation undergoes a radical revolution of values. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people the giant triplets of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A civilization can flounder as readily in the face of moral bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy. Atrue revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. We are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s road side, but that will only be an initial act. One day the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be beaten and robbed as theymake their journey through life. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar, it understands that anedifice which produces beggars, needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on theglaring contrast of poverty and wealth, with righteous indignation it will look at thousands of working peopledisplaced from their jobs, with reduced incomes as a result of automation while the profits of the employersremain in tact and say, this is not just. It will look across the ocean and see individual Capitalists of the Westinvesting huge sums of money in Asia and Africa only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries and say, this is not just. It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of LatinAmerica and say, this is not just. A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order and say of war, this way of settling differences is not just. This business of burning human being with napalm, of filling our nation’s home with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normal humane, of sending men home from dark and bloodied battlefields physically handicapped and psychologicallyderanged cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love. A nation that continues year after year, to spendmore money on military defense then on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. So what we must all see is that these are revolutionary times All over the globe, men are revoltingagainst old systems of exploitation and out of the wombs of a frail world new systems of justice and equality are being born. The shirtless and barefoot of the Earth are rising up as never before. The people who sat in darknesshave seen a great light. We in the west must support these revolutions, it is a sad fact that because of comfort, complacency, a morbid fear of Communism and our proneness to adjust to injustice, the Western nations thatinitiated so much of the revolutionary spirit of the modern world have now become the arch anti-revolutionaries. This has driven many to feel that only Marxism has the revolutionary spirit and in a sense,Communism is a judgment of our failure to make democracy real and to follow through on the revolutions thatwe initiated. Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go out into asometimes hostile world, declaring eternal opposition to poverty, racism and militarism. With this powerful commitment, we shall boldly challenge the status quo and unjust [morals?] and thereby speed the day when every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill shall be made low and the crooked places shall bemade straight and the rough places plain.May I say in conclusion that there is a need now, more than ever before, for men and women in our nation to be creatively maladjusted. Mr. Davis said, and I say to you that I choose to be among the maladjusted,as my good friend Bill Coughlin said there are those who have criticized me and many of you for taking a standagainst the War in Vietnam and for seeking to say to the nation that the issues of Civil Rights cannot beseparated from the issues of peace.I want to say to you tonight that I intend to keep these issues mixed because they are mixed. Somewherewe must see that justice is indivisible, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and I have fought tolong and to hard against segregated public accommodations to end up at this point in my life, segregating mymoral concerns. So let us stand in this convention knowing that on some positions; cowardice asks the questions, is itsafe; expediency asks the question, is it politic; vanity asks the question, is it popular, but conscious asks thequestion, is it right. And on some positions, it is necessary for the moral individual to take a stand that is neither safe, nor politic nor popular; but he must do it because it is right. And we say to our nation tonight, we say toour Government, we even say to our FBI, we will not be harassed, we will not make a butchery of our conscious, we will not be intimidated and we will be heard.

LeShelle Smith is a woman who decided she wanted to start her media platform, interviewing individuals who are contributing to the rebuilding of Black Wall Street(s) in cities across America. That decision lead to LeShelle creating Minority Report featuring Black Owned Businesses, a video blog on YouTube that highlights African American entrepreneurs, operating as the media extension of Smith Communication Services, LLC. The mission of Minority Report is to feature Black entrepreneurs through interviews and product/service reviews. The vision of Minority Report is to do for Black Owned Businesses, what Oprah's Book Club did for authors - provide exceptional, one of a kind, Word of Mouth Marketing that converts into increased sales. The goal of every blog article, social media post, and YouTube video is to highlight Black owned businesses through storytelling, promote their products and services but to also empower and educate aspiring entrepreneurs. Advocating for the "buy black movement" has become more and more prevalent as we have moved from the Civil Rights Movement, through Jim Crow, survived the Crack Era and still navigating the Preschool-Prison pipeline. Our community is beginning to see the value of our dollar as it relates to our vote, our livelihood, and our legacy. I am one of many who are on the front lines advocating for black entrepreneurs. But I am one of few exclusively educating consumers on reputable black owned businesses through honest product reviews. I also created the Ultimate Black Love Gift Guide Black Owned Business Coupon Book. I release a new coupon book every year on Black Love Day, February 13th and focus on the 5 Tenets of Black Love. For the last 7+ years, Maya Gaddie has built, launched and sold online classes and programs in her business. She loves showing her clients how to do the same. She's backed her education up with a lot of real experience with clients who are out in the field, really doing the work, making money and creating communities online. Certificates of Deposit (CD) Make You Lose Money This is a quick bonus episode for all of you who have downloaded the Buy Black Podcast App! It's not going to any of the directories so if you know someone who needs this info (and so many of us do), help them download the app on their phone as well. Points We Cover In This Episode What a Certificate of Deposit (CD) is Why Banks Offer Them Why it is a Bad Idea to Put Your Money Into a CD Supporting Concepts: APR: Annual Percentage Rate Compound Interest: Additional return on investment that you get when your principle investment PLUS previously accrued interest are multiplied by your APR Compounding Schedule: How often the interest on your investment or loan is compounded. Daily Monthly Quarterly Semiannually Annually (Most savings accounts compound daily, loans compound monthly, and CD typically compound annually) APY: Annual Percentage Yield APY is the actual rate of return that you receive on your investment based on your interest compounding schedule More simply, how much more money you're getting ABOVE the APR because of Compound Interest Inflation: The rate at which the cost of goods and services increases over time. This fluctuates and is reported monthly The Numbers Current Best CD Rates 1-Year: 1.8% APR 3-Year: 2.0% APR 5-Year: 2.5% APR In the episode I use the examples of a 1-Year CD with 2.0% APR (not realistic...absolute best case investing scenario), and a 5-Year CD with 2.5% APR (typically only available with minimum $25,000 deposit). Current Inflation Rate Average inflation for 2017 was 2.13%. I use that number throughout the episode. The Math We use a $1000 tax refund example, putting it into a 1-Year CD at 2.0% Investment: $1000 * 1.02 (100% principle + 2.0% interest) = $1020 Inflation: $1000 * 1.0213 = $1021.30 Net Value Loss of $1.30 ***The person I first discussed this with argued that I wasn't accounting for Compound Interest...so let's work through that*** What About Compound Interest? Compound Interest typically would not apply to a 1-Year CD because most CDs Compound Annually. This means the only time interest would compound on your CD is the day you close it out and retrieve your money from the bank at the end of the year So, in this case, you were promised 2%, and you get exactly 2% interest on your investment at the end...nothing compounded in between Let's assume you got a magical CD that compounds monthly...how would that affect your return? First, your 2% APR will be Chopped Into 12 Equal Bits...one for each month 0.02 / 12 = 0.0016666667 So, your interest would be compounded at a rate of 0.16666667% each month $1000 * 1.0016666667 = $1001.67 (End of January) $1001.67 * 1.0016666667 = $1003.34 (End of February) $1003.34 * 1.0016666667 = $1005.01 (End of March) (Here, you see the benefit of Compound Interest because rather than having a simple return of $1.67 each month based on your original $1000 principle, the return each month gets slightly larger because interest accrual is based on a higher amount that is in your account after each additional accrual. Because of this, your APY gets higher the more often that your Loan or Investment Compounds) FAST FORWARD $1018.49 * 1.0016666667 = $1020.18 (End of December) Yes, you read that right. In this scenario compound interest will earn you an EXTRA $0.18 over the year. So, as I said, compound interest doesn't really apply with CDs, especially when you're putting in small money. But Gerald, I'm Big Bank Hank Cool. I looked at the outcomes for a person dropping $25,000 into a 5-year CD at 2.5% APR. In that scenario, I ignored the fact that the average Long Term Inflation Rate is 3.22%. Instead, I assumed that inflation would not change AT ALL over the next 5-Years while your money is tied up. Here's the outcome: $25000 CD, Compounded Annually, 5-Year Term Yields $28285.21 = + $3285.21 Inflation: $27778.36 buys what $25000 bought 5 years ago Net Gain = $506.85 for a 5 Year Commitment of your $25,000 Yes, you gave up access to $25,000 of your money for five years so that the bank could pay you the equivalent of $506.85. Wealthy people don't put money into CDs. If you want to become wealthy, don't put your money into a CD. Monday, 12 Feb 2018, we will talk about another safe, and much more profitable way to invest your Tax Refund. Thanks for joining me in this Bonus, App Only Episode. How much time and money have you dumped into failed Facebook Ads Campaigns? Don’t blame Facebook! They’ve built an excellent marketing platform, but as the business owner, YOU have to do your part! My guest, David W Williams, CEO of Digital Underground Sales & Marketing, is here to teach you why most Facebook Ads Campaigns Fail and how you can avoid expensive pitfalls to make yours profitable. Buy Black | The Voice of Black Business SUBSCRIBE NOW https://appurl.io/jnj6a662 DOWNLOAD THE APP https://appurl.io/jnj7wd6n Started off as an Email Marketer [03:45] Built email lists Sold them to other digital marketers Got into facebook ads when they first started around 2013 Started build his business for himself mastering Facebook Ads What makes Facebook Ads so powerful [05:00] If your target audience is over 25, they are probably on facebook It’s the platform with the widest reach…”unlimited traffic” Advertising on websites, there’s a limit to the number of people you can get your offer in front of Facebook makes it easy to start doing ads, but you need a little education to do it effectively Download the Free PDF Highlight Reel! Click here to download David's top Facebook ad campaign tips from the episode. Why do most Facebook Ad Campaigns Fail? [07:00] Most business owners do not know their numbers Going to facebook, spending money on ads, but don’t have Key Performance Indicators setup Most businesses really don’t know who they’re marketing to Their customer avatar is very “thin” Facebook is a great platform, but it doesn’t do the marketing work for you How to identify your Customer Avatar [09:30] This is the “ideal person” that you are trying to do business with Like building a FBI profile, you should have a robust profile of the type of person you are targeting with your marketing How to find the Psychographic Information [11:50] 30-40 years ago you had to do focus groups Today, people tell you everything they think and feel on the internet Find where your customers hang out (blogs, social media), and follow them and observe what they say Sit on blogs and read all of the comments, develop the information trends and find out how you need to target your marketing You must do the front-end marketing work to be successful with back-end advertising Marketing vs. Advertising [16:40] 1954 Video, “Selling to the Negro”: https://youtu.be/04myb2Dzo9Q Marketers break down the psychology of the black buyer, then sell that information to companies so they know how to get our dollars Marketing is a science, Advertising is a technical practice Marketing is the deep psychological work of figuring out what an audience desires and figuring out how to craft messages that make them react Advertising is specifically choosing how much money will be spent on what ads in what places for what period of time Great Examples of Marketing at work: Nike Just Do It 2018 vs. Dodge Superbowl 2013 [21:30] These two videos are basically the same ad, targeted at different customer avatars Nike - Dream Crazy: https://youtu.be/Fq2CvmgoO7I Dodge - God Made a Farmer: https://youtu.be/AMpZ0TGjbWE How Do You Set Up Your Advertising Campaigns for Success? [24:00] Assuming the numbers are good, the avatar is robust, and your offer is compelling...here are the next steps: Run a page post engagement ad first Facebook doesn’t see your ad as an ad...it sees it as content Facebook will reward you for compelling content by lowering ad costs Want to get social proof of Likes, Comments, and Shares so that when the ad runs later, Facebook will see it as compelling content and lower the costs Run a conversion focused ad at a later date What are the different types of Facebook Ad Campaigns that you can run? [26:15] Do you want sales or do you want exposure? As a new advertiser, focus on sales, engagement, or lead generation Facebook has in internal lead tool called Lead Pages Stay focused on those few Always have a Facebook Pixel Embedded in your Website [29:00] Here are a few good Wordpress Plugins to make embedding a Facebook Pixel easy Insert Headers and Footers Facebook Pixel by PixelYourSite WP Facebook Pixel Pixel Caffeine (Used by BuyBlackPodcast.com) Facebook Conversion Pixel Questions from the Live Audience Follow the Buy Black Podcast Fan Page on Facebook to be part of our next LIVE Broadcast!!! Check out the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/p8q149obKtU Are video ads better converting than content-only ads? [30:45] “There’s no such thing as better or worse. It’s all based on testing” Test Video vs. Slideshow vs. Static Image Use whichever converts best All of this activity needs to be based on your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) What is the minimal amount of money to put into initial split-testing? [32:45] Facebook ad traffic is always going to be greater than zero When you’re building your business, you have to build it to withstand paid marketing If ad spend with no conversions will put you in the poor house, that’s a bad business model My first ad for my greeting cards got tons of likes but nobody responded to the call to action to buy. [34:20] Getting engagement on the front end is really good. Wait until later to do the conversion ad You can specifically retarget every person who engaged with the ad (liked, commented, or shared), and ask questions about why they didn’t buy or give them a second opportunity to buy Even when people know and like you, they won’t buy immediately on Facebook because people aren’t there to buy products When you’re generating likes and shares, would you suggest inviting people who show interest into a private page that focuses on your products or services [35:50] Yes, this is a good idea. That’s exactly what just happened to me. I just knew this was going to be a productive seven days. I had plenty of appointments but not so many that I felt overwhelmed. I was ahead of schedule on releasing a few key pieces of solid content. Most importantly, I had blocked off the first two days of the long Labor Day Weekend to create and publish back-to-back podcast episodes to give my listeners plenty of content that would carry them through the holiday and into next week. I was sure I had it all lined out, but Murphy (with his stupid law) had me dead in his sights! [13:30] Suddenly It All Went Downhill Saturday morning, a technician came to my house to upgrade our internet package from 40mb to 1gb speed. The process went smooth enough and my internet was blazing in no time. As soon as the tech left, I began the process of connecting all of our devices to the the new Wi-Fi network. For my office desktop PC, I had the brilliant idea to connect it directly to my Wi-Fi range extender via ethernet cable to create a more stable connection. When I moved the PC to access the ethernet port in back, I somehow pulled one of the video cables which caused a disconnect inside the PC. The motherboard completely stopped recognizing my graphics card. Fifty troubleshooting attempts and 14 HOURS LATER, I managed to get the motherboard to read the graphics card again. Great! There went Saturday. [16:35] The Final Straw It’s cool, I may have lost Saturday, but Sunday, I’m goin’ in! NOPE! Sunday, I’m goin’ OFF! As in, the internet customer service because their defective “top-of-the-line” modem stopped working overnight! I had NO internet, like NONE. And you guessed it, there are no techs on call or stores open on Sunday...and Monday is a holiday. No internet until TUESDAY...and the tech tried to tell me I they couldn’t get a modem to me until WEDNESDAY! Oh, that was IT! I was done! Escalate me to a MANAGER NOW! [21:45] From Resolution to Writer’s Block After securing an early Tuesday morning tech appointment and guarantees of bill proration and credits I reconnected my old, slightly slower (and I do mean slightly...could have done without the new modem in the first place...
Do you know the difference between a “customer” and a “client”? If not, don’t worry! I struggled with understanding the nuance for a long time in my consulting career. In today’s episode, we’re going to examine the definitions of customers vs. clients, and lay down five key actions you can take to build business relationships that are more than transaction deep. Subscribe to Buy Black Podcast Apple | Google | Spotify | Stitcher | iHeart Submit a question for our new monthly Question & Answer episode to: questions@buyblackpodcast.com 3 Key Points: Know the difference between Customers vs Clients: Customers come to your business to get a product or a service. Your relationship is transaction-based. Loyal customers will happily patronize your business again and again, but that doesn’t make them clients. Client relationships typically feature and exchange of value based on a trust relationship and demonstrated expertise. Become the Concierge: Everybody claims to “know a guy who knows a guy”. You want to be THAT Guy (or Gal)! Build a strong and diverse professional network and always look for opportunities to refer your customers to other people who can solve their problems. Not only does this increase your personal value in their eyes, but your peer business relationships grow stronger because of your referrals! DJay Reace and Oliver M. Fitzpatrick have some great techniques for building professional networks! Have a Coaching or Consulting Offer Ready: If you build real relationships with your customers, many of them will ask for more access to you and your expertise. You NEED to be prepared for this with a structured coaching or consulting offer! Take the time, while you have it, to put together a basic offer for your services and have an agreement in your file library. There is no shortage of coaching/consulting agreement templates available on the web, but here’s the one that worked best for me Templates for Coaches. [04:30] Define clients and customers Customers buy a goods or basic services from your business Clients typically purchase professional services from a business or individual Customer transactions usually involve immediate value exchange Client transactions usually involve value exchanged over time for expertise Customer examples Gym memberships Cars Cell phones Car washes Pet supplies Client examples Personal training client Referred Car Salesman Exclusive Cell Phone Salesman Personal Car Detailer Pet care and grooming specialist What’s the difference in those scenarios? Not associated with advanced degrees or professional certifications Demonstrated expertise Personal relationships Mutual trust and respect [09:45] Stories Car clients who followed me to AT&T Small businesses who only purchased new phones through me Your mission - Expand your relationship with customers...turn them into CLIENTS! Five Steps to Convert Customers to Loyal Clients [15:15] Deliver unexpected expertise Listen intently to your customers Sniff out the underlying questions or concerns they have Provide answers or solutions proactively Become a concierge for your customers Be “the guy who knows a guy”: take every opportunity to refer a customer to someone who can solve their problems not directly related to your business [16:50] Connect them with the people and resources they need Give them your contact information, and take calls free for a limited time (This mainly applies to entrepreneurs whose business model is not already based on client service) Once your customers have experienced the value of having access to your expertise, present them with your coaching or consulting offer [17:58] Make yourself available to them away from the office (tip-toe this delicate line) People expect to PAY for the value they receive In this case, the “neighbors” are your different types of relationships with customers, clients, friends, and family The “fences” are the agreements (preferably written) that separate those relationships into neat buckets The phrase, “good fences make good neighbors” can be modified to apply here Your coaching or consulting relationship needs to be set apart, structured with an agreement, and paid in full I didn’t feel right charging him He didn’t feel right picking my brain for an hour at a time for free...so he ghosted...for months Don’t undervalue your services. If you don’t know how to set your rates, start with a round number and adjust to the market $100/hr or as a flat fee is a good starting point for most entrepreneurs Bottom line, charge people for the value you provide. A good friend or client wants to pay what you’re worth I learned this lesson first hand, almost lost a friend & client [20:45] HAVE A COACHING OR CONSULTING OFFER READY! You have got to charge clients for your services In many cases, you should charge a premium But, regardless of how much your clients pay you, the money is simply the key used to unlock the door to your expertise You genuinely solve or help them solve their problems You remove stress and simplify your client’s life You put their happiness, and well-being at the forefront of your relationship...always Real VALUE is created and transferred in two ways [30:35] Prove that you care about them, not their money Buy Black Podcast Exclusive Black Business Resources! Leverage great, relevant content to keep your customers engaged. Email marketing campaigns are a continuous value exchange. Deliver content that keeps the conversation going, builds trust with your customers, and shows that a long relationship with your company will enhance their lives. Intentions don’t matter. Segment your email list based on customer behaviors! Personalize your remarketing campaigns. Focus on customers who engage with your emails and your content. Most importantly, give special attention to the ones who continue to buy your products. Sponsors Mike D’s BBQ - My good friend, Mike De Los Santos makes some of The World’s Best Barbeque Sauce! 54 Years Later, We Still Need This Guidance Saturday, May 19th 2018 would have been el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz (b.k.a. - "Malcolm X") 93rd birthday. To honor his legacy & remind ourselves of the work we have yet to do, we will listen to "The Ballot or The Bullet" in this Buy Black Podcast episode. Full Transcript: Mr. Moderator, Rev. Cleage, brothers and sisters and friends, and I see some enemies. [laughter, applause] In fact, I think we'd be fooling ourselves if we had an audience this large and didn't realize that there were some enemies present. This afternoon we want to talk about the ballot or the bullet. The ballot or the bullet explains itself. But before we get into it, since this is the year of the ballot or the bullet, I would like to clarify some things that refer to me personally, concerning my own personal position. I'm still a Muslim. That is, my religion is still Islam. [applause] My religion is still Islam. I still credit Mr. Muhammad for what I know and what I am. He's the one who opened my eyes. [applause] At present I am the minister of the newly founded Muslim Mosque Incorporated, which has its offices in the Theresa Hotel right in the heart of Harlem, that's the black belt in New York City. And when we realize that Adam Clayton Powell, is a Christian minister, he has Abyssinian Baptist Church, but at the same time he's more famous for his political struggling. And Dr. King is a Christian minister from Atlanta Georgia, or in Atlanta Georgia, but he's become more famous for being involved in the civil rights struggle. There's another in New York, Rev. Galamison, I don't know if you've heard of him out here, he's a Christian minister from Brooklyn, but has become famous for his fight against the segregated school system in Brooklyn. Rev. Cleage, right here, is a Christian minister, here in Detroit, he's head of the Freedom Now Party. All of these are Christian ministers [applause] …all of these are Christian ministers but they don't come to us as Christian ministers, they come to us as fighters in some other category. I am a Muslim minister. The same as they are Christian ministers, I'm a Muslim minister. And I don't believe in fighting today on any one front, but on all fronts. [applause] In fact, I'm a Black Nationalist freedom fighter. [applause] Islam is my religion but I believe my religion is my personal business. [applause] It governs my personal life, my personal morals. And my religious philosophy is personal between me and the God in whom I believe, just as the religious philosophy of these others is between them and the God in whom they believe. And this is best this way. Were we to come out here discussing religion, we'd have too many differences from the out start and we could never get together. So today, though Islam is my religious philosophy, my political, economic and social philosophy is black nationalism. You and I – [applause] As I say, if we bring up religion, we'll have differences, we'll have arguments, and we'll never be able to get together. But if we keep our religion at home, keep our religion in the closet, keep our religion between ourselves and our God, but when we come out here we have a fight that's common to all of us against a enemy who is common to all of us. [applause] The political philosophy of black nationalism only means that the black man should control the politics and the politicians in his own community. The time when white people can come in our community and get us to vote for them so that they can be our political leaders and tell us what to do and what not to do is long gone. [applause] By the same token, the time when that same white man, knowing that your eyes are too far open, can send another Negro in the community, and get you and me to support him, so that he can use him to lead us astray, those days are long gone too. [applause] The political philosophy of black nationalism only means that if you and I are going to live in a black community – and that's where we're going to live, 'cause as soon as you move into one of their….soon as you move out of the black community into their community, it's mixed for a period of time, but they're gone and you're right there all by yourself again. [applause] We must, we must understand the politics of our community and we must know what politics is supposed to produce. We must know what part politics play in our lives. And until we become politically mature, we will always be misled, led astray, or deceived or maneuvered into supporting someone politically who doesn't have the good of our community at heart. So the political philosophy of black nationalism only means that we will have to carry on a program, a political program, of reeducation – to open our people's eyes, make us become more politically conscious, politically mature. And then, we will – whenever we are ready to cast our ballot, that ballot will be cast for a man of the community, who has the good of the community at heart. [applause] The economic philosophy of black nationalism only means that we should own and operate and control the economy of our community. You would never have found—you can't open up a black store in a white community. White man won't even patronize you. And he's not wrong. He got sense enough to look out for himself. It's you who don't have sense enough to look out for yourself. [applause] The white man, the white man is too intelligent to let someone else come and gain control of the economy of his community. But you will let anybody come in and control the economy of your community, control the housing, control the education, control the jobs, control the businesses, under the pretext that you want to integrate. Nah, you're out of your mind. [applause] The political … the economic philosophy of black nationalism only means that we have to become involved in a program of reeducation, to educate our people into the importance of knowing that when you spend your dollar out of the community in which you live, the community in which you spend your money becomes richer and richer, the community out of which you take your money becomes poorer and poorer. And because these Negroes, who have been misled, misguided, are breaking their necks to take their money and spend it with the Man, the Man is becoming richer and richer, and you're becoming poorer and poorer. And then what happens? The community in which you live becomes a slum. It becomes a ghetto. The conditions become rundown. And then you have the audacity to complain about poor housing in a rundown community, while you're running down yourselves when you take your dollar out. [applause] And you and I are in a double trap because not only do we lose by taking our money someplace else and spending it, when we try and spend it in our own community we're trapped because we haven't had sense enough to set up stores and control the businesses of our community. The man who is controlling the stores in our community is a man who doesn't look like we do. He's a man who doesn't even live in the community. So you and I, even when we try and spend our money on the block where we live or the area where we live, we're spending it with a man who, when the sun goes down, takes that basket full of money in another part of the town. [applause] So we're trapped, trapped, double-trapped, triple-trapped. Any way we go, we find that we're trapped. Any every kind of solution that someone comes up with is just another trap. But the political and economic philosophy of black nationalism…the economic philosophy of black nationalism shows our people the importance of setting up these little stores, and developing them and expanding them into larger operations. Woolworth didn't start out big like they are today; they started out with a dime store, and expanded, and expanded, and expanded until today they are all over the country and all over the world and they getting some of everybody's money. Now this is what you and I – General Motors, the same way, it didn't start out like it is. It started out just a little rat-race type operation. And it expanded and it expanded until today it's where it is right now. And you and I have to make a start. And the best place to start is right in the community where we live. [applause] So our people not only have to be reeducated to the importance of supporting black business, but the black man himself has to be made aware of the importance of going into business. And once you and I go into business, we own and operate at least the businesses in our community. What we will be doing is developing a situation, wherein, we will actually be able to create employment for the people in the community. And once you can create some employment in the community where you live, it will eliminate the necessity of you and me having to act ignorantly and disgracefully, boycotting and picketing some cracker someplace else trying to beg him for a job. [applause] Anytime you have to rely upon your enemy for a job, you're in bad shape. [applause]When you — and he is your enemy. You wouldn't be in this country if some enemy hadn't kidnapped you and brought you here. [applause] On the other hand, some of you think you came here on the Mayflower. [laughter] So as you can see, brothers and sisters, today – this afternoon it is not our intention to discuss religion. We're going to forget religion. If we bring up religion we'll be in an argument. And the best way to keep away from arguments and differences, as I said earlier, put your religion at home, in the closet, keep it between you and your God. Because if it hasn't done anything more for you than it has, you need to forget it anyway. [laughter, applause] Whether you are a Christian or a Muslim or a nationalist, we all have the same problem. They don't hang you because you're a Baptist; they hang you 'cause you're black. [applause] They don't attack me because I'm a Muslim. They attack me 'cause I'm black. They attacked all of us for the same reason. All of us catch hell from the same enemy. We're all in the same bag, in the same boat. We suffer political oppression, economic exploitation and social degradation. All of 'em from the same enemy. The government has failed us. You can't deny that. Any time you're living in the 20th century, 1964, and you walking around here singing "We Shall Overcome," the government has failed you. [applause] This is part of what's wrong with you, you do too much singing. [laughter] Today it's time to stop singing and start swinging. [laughter, applause] You can't sing up on freedom. But you can swing up on some freedom. [cheering]Cassius Clay can sing. But singing didn't help him to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Swinging helped him. [applause] So this government has failed us. The government itself has failed us. And the white liberals who have been posing as our friends have failed us. And once we see that all of these other sources to which we've turned have failed, we stop turning to them and turn to ourselves. We need a self-help program, a do-it-yourself philosophy, a do-it-right-now philosophy, a it's-already-too-late philosophy. This is what you and I need to get with. And the only time – the only way we're going to solve our problem is with a self-help program. Before we can get a self-help program started, we have to have a self-help philosophy. Black nationalism is a self-help philosophy. What's so good about it – you can stay right in the church where you are and still take black nationalism as your philosophy. You can stay in any kind of civic organization that you belong to and still take black nationalism as your philosophy. You can be an atheist and still take black nationalism as your philosophy. This is a philosophy that eliminates the necessity for division and argument, 'cause if you're black, you should be thinking black. And if you're black and you not thinking black at this late date, well, I'm sorry for you. [applause] Once you change your philosophy, you change your thought pattern. Once you change your thought pattern you change your attitude. Once you change your attitude it changes your behavior pattern. And then you go on into some action. As long as you got a sit-down philosophy you'll have a sit-down thought pattern. And as long as you think that old sit-down thought, you'll be in some kind of sit-down action. They'll have you sitting in everywhere. [laughter] It's not so good to refer to what you're going to do as a sit-in. That right there castrates you. Right there it brings you down. What goes with it? What – think of the image of someone sitting. An old woman can sit. An old man can sit. A chump can sit, a coward can sit, anything can sit. Well, you and I been sitting long enough and it's time for us today to start doing some standing and some fighting to back that up. [applause] When we look at other parts of this Earth upon which we live, we find that black, brown, red and yellow people in Africa and Asia are getting their independence. They're not getting it by singing, 'We Shall Overcome." No, they're getting it through nationalism. It is nationalism that brought about the independence of the people in Asia. Every nation in Asia gained its independence through the philosophy of nationalism. Every nation on the African continent that has gotten its independence brought it about through the philosophy of nationalism. And it will take black nationalism to bring about the freedom of 22 million Afro-Americans, here in this country, where we have suffered colonialism for the past 400 years. [applause] America is just as much a colonial power as England ever was. America is just as much a colonial power as France ever was. In fact, America is more so a colonial power than they, because she is a hypocritical colonial power behind it. [applause] What is 20th — what, what do you call second-class citizenship? Why, that's colonization. Second-class citizenship is nothing but 20th slavery. How you gonna to tell me you're a second-class citizen? They don't have second-class citizenship in any other government on this Earth. They just have slaves and people who are free! Well, this country is a hypocrite! They try and make you think they set you free by calling you a second-class citizen. No, you're nothing but a 20th century slave. [applause] Just as it took nationalism to remove colonialism from Asia and Africa, it'll take black nationalism today to remove colonialism from the backs and the minds of twenty-two million Afro-Americans here in this country. And 1964 looks like it might be the year of the ballot or the bullet. [applause] Why does it look like it might be the year of the ballot or the bullet? Because Negroes have listened to the trickery and the lies and the false promises of the white man now for too long, and they're fed up. They've become disenchanted. They've become disillusioned. They've become dissatisfied. And all of this has built up frustrations in the black community that makes the black community throughout America today more explosive than all of the atomic bombs the Russians can ever invent. Whenever you got a racial powder keg sitting in your lap, you're in more trouble than if you had an atomic powder keg sitting in your lap. When a racial powder keg goes off, it doesn't care who it knocks out the way. Understand this, it's dangerous. And in 1964, this seems to be the year. Because what can the white man use, now, to fool us? After he put down that March on Washington – and you see all through that now, he tricked you, had you marching down to Washington. Had you marching back and forth between the feet of a dead man named Lincoln and another dead man named George Washington, singing, "We Shall Overcome." [applause] He made a chump out of you. He made a fool out of you. He made you think you were going somewhere and you end up going nowhere but between Lincoln and Washington. [laughter] So today our people are disillusioned. They've become disenchanted. They've become dissatisfied. And in their frustrations they want action. And in 1964 you'll see this young black man, this new generation, asking for the ballot or the bullet. That old Uncle Tom action is outdated. The young generation don't want to hear anything about "the odds are against us." What do we care about odds? [applause] When this country here was first being founded, there were thirteen colonies. The whites were colonized. They were fed up with this taxation without representation. So some of them stood up and said, "Liberty or death!" I went to a white school over here in Mason, Michigan. The white man made the mistake of letting me read his history books. [laughter] He made the mistake of teaching me that Patrick Henry was a patriot, and George Washington – wasn't nothing non-violent about ol' Pat, or George Washington. "Liberty or death" is was what brought about the freedom of whites in this country from the English. [applause] They didn't care about the odds. Why, they faced the wrath of the entire British Empire. And in those days, they used to say that the British Empire was so vast and so powerful that the sun would never set on it. This is how big it was, yet these thirteen little scrawny states, tired of taxation without representation, tired of being exploited and oppressed and degraded, told that big British Empire, "Liberty or death." And here you have 22 million Afro-Americans, black people today, catching more hell than Patrick Henry ever saw. [applause] And I'm here to tell you in case you don't know it – that you got a new, you got a new generation of black people in this country who don't care anything whatsoever about odds. They don't want to hear you ol' Uncle Tom, handkerchief-heads talking about the odds. No! [laughter, applause] This is a new generation. If they're going to draft these young black men, and send them over to Korea or to South Vietnam to face 800 million Chinese… [laughter, applause] If you're not afraid of those odds, you shouldn't be afraid of these odds. [applause] Why is America – why does this loom to be such an explosive political year? Because this is the year of politics. This is the year when all of the white politicians are going to come into the Negro community. You never see them until election time. You can't find them until election time. [applause] They're going to come in with false promises. And as they make these false promises they're going to feed our frustrations, and this will only serve to make matters worse. I'm no politician. I'm not even a student of politics. I'm not a Republican, nor a Democrat, nor an American – and got sense enough to know it. [applause] I'm one of the 22 million black victims of the Democrats. One of the 22 million black victims of the Republicans and one of the 22 million black victims of Americanism. [applause] And when I speak, I don't speak as a Democrat or a Republican, nor an American. I speak as a victim of America's so-called democracy. You and I have never seen democracy – all we've seen is hypocrisy. [applause] When we open our eyes today and look around America, we see America not through the eyes of someone who has enjoyed the fruits of Americanism. We see America through the eyes of someone who has been the victim of Americanism. We don't see any American dream. We've experienced only the American nightmare. We haven't benefited from America's democracy. We've only suffered from America's hypocrisy. And the generation that's coming up now can see it. And are not afraid to say it. If you go to jail, so what? If you're black, you were born in jail. [applause] If you black you were born in jail, in the North as well as the South. Stop talking about the South. As long as you south of the Canadian border, you South. [laughter, applause] Don't call Governor Wallace a Dixie governor, Romney is a Dixie Governor. [applause] Twenty-two million black victims of Americanism are waking up and they are gaining a new political consciousness, becoming politically mature. And as they become – develop this political maturity, they're able to see the recent trends in these political elections. They see that the whites are so evenly divided that every time they vote, the race is so close they have to go back and count the votes all over again. Which means that any block, any minority that has a block of votes that stick together is in a strategic position. Either way you go, that's who gets it. You're in a position to determine who'll go to the White House and who'll stay in the doghouse. [laughter] You're the one who has that power. You can keep Johnson in Washington D.C., or you can send him back to his Texas cotton patch. [applause] You're the one who sent Kennedy to Washington. You're the one who put the present Democratic administration in Washington, D.C. The whites were evenly divided. It was the fact that you threw 80 percent of your votes behind the Democrats that put the Democrats in the White House. When you see this, you can see that the Negro vote is the key factor. And despite the fact that you are in a position to be the determining factor, what do you get out of it? The Democrats have been in Washington, D.C. only because of the Negro vote. They've been down there four years. And they're – all other legislation they wanted to bring up they've brought it up, and gotten it out of the way, and now they bring up you. And now they bring up you! You put them first and they put you last. Because you're a chump! [applause] A political chump. In Washington, D.C., in the House of Representatives there are 257 who are Democrats. Only 177 are Republican. In the Senate there are 67 Democrats. Only 33 are Republicans. The party that you backed controls two-thirds of the House of Representatives and the Senate and still they can't keep their promise to you. 'Cause you're a chump. [applause] Any time you throw your weight behind a political party that controls two-thirds of the government, and that party can't keep the promise that it made to you during election-time, and you're dumb enough to walk around continuing to identify yourself with that party, you're not only a chump but you're a traitor to your race. [applause] What kind of alibi do come up with? They try and pass the buck to the Dixiecrats. Now, back during the days when you were blind, deaf and dumb, ignorant, politically immature, naturally you went along with that. But today, as your eyes come open, and you develop political maturity, you're able to see and think for yourself, and you can see that a Dixiecrat is nothing but a Democrat – in disguise. [applause] You look at the structure of the government that controls this country, is controlled by 16 senatorial committees and 20 congressional committees. Of the 16 senatorial committees that run the government, 10 of them are in the hands of southern segregationists. Of the 20 congressional committees that run the government, 12 of them are in the hands of southern segregationists. And they're going to tell you and me that the South lost the war? [laughter, applause] You, today, are in the hands of a government of segregationists. Racists, white supremacists, who belong to the Democratic party but disguise themselves as Dixiecrats. A Dixiecrat is nothing but a Democrat. Whoever runs the Democrats is also the father of the Dixiecrats. And the father of all of them is sitting in the White House. [applause] I say, and I'll say it again, you got a president who's nothing but a southern segregationist [applause] from the state of Texas. They'll lynch in Texas as quick as they'll lynch you in Mississippi. Only in Texas they lynch you with a Texas accent, in Mississippi they lynch you with a Mississippi accent. [cheering] The first thing the cracker does when he comes in power, he takes all the Negro leaders and invites them for coffee. To show that he's all right. And those Uncle Toms can't pass up the coffee. [laughter, applause] They come away from the coffee table telling you and me that this man is all right [laughter]. 'Cause he's from the South and since he's from the South he can deal with the South. Look at the logic that they're using. What about Eastland? He's from the South. Why not make him the president? If Johnson is a good man 'cause he's from Texas, and being from Texas will enable him to deal with the South, Eastland can deal with the South better than Johnson! [laughter, applause] Oh, I say you been misled. You been had. You been took. [laughter, applause] I was in Washington a couple of weeks ago while the senators were filibustering and I noticed in the back of the Senate a huge map, and on this map it showed the distribution of Negroes in America. And surprisingly, the same senators that were involved in the filibuster were from the states where there were the most Negroes. Why were they filibustering the civil rights legislation? Because the civil rights legislation is supposed to guarantee boarding rights to Negroes from those states. And those senators from those states know that if the Negroes in those states can vote, those senators are down the drain. [applause] The representatives of those states go down the drain. And in the Constitution of this country it has a stipulation, wherein, whenever the rights, the voting rights of people in a certain district are violated, then the representative who's from that particular district, according to the Constitution, is supposed to be expelled from the Congress. Now, if this particular aspect of the Constitution was enforced, why, you wouldn't have a cracker in Washington, D.C. [applause] But what would happen? When you expel the Dixiecrat, you're expelling the Democrat. When you destroy the power of the Dixiecrat, you are destroying the power of the Democratic Party. So how in the world can the Democratic Party in the South actually side with you, in sincerity, when all of its power is based in the South? These Northern Democrats are in cahoots with the southern Democrats. [applause]They're playing a giant con game, a political con game. You know how it goes. One of 'em comes to you and make believe he's for you. And he's in cahoots with the other one that's not for you. Why? Because neither one of 'em is for you. But they got to make you go with one of 'em or the other. So this is a con game, and this is what they've been doing with you and me all of these years. First thing, Johnson got off the plane when he become president, he ask, "Where's Dickey?" You know who Dickey is? Dickey is old southern cracker Richard Russell. Lookie here! Yes, Lyndon B. Johnson's best friend is the one who is a head, who's heading the forces that are filibustering civil rights legislation. You tell me how in the hell is he going to be Johnson's best friend? [applause] How can Johnson be his friend and your friend too? No, that man is too tricky. Especially if his friend is still ol' Dickey. [laughter, applause] Whenever the Negroes keep the Democrats in power they're keeping the Dixiecrats in power. This is true! A vote for a Democrat is nothing but a vote for a Dixiecrat. I know you don't like me saying that. I'm not the kind of person who come here to say what you like. I'm going to tell you the truth whether you like it or not. [applause] Up here in the North you have the same thing. The Democratic Party don't – they don't do it that way. They got a thing they call gerrymandering. They maneuver you out of power. Even though you can vote they fix it so you're voting for nobody. They got you going and coming. In the South they're outright political wolves, in the North they're political foxes. A fox and a wolf are both canine, both belong to the dog family. [laughter, applause] Now, you take your choice. You going to choose a northern dog or a southern dog? Because either dog you choose, I guarantee you, you'll still be in the doghouse. This is why I say it's the ballot or the bullet. It's liberty or it's death. It's freedom for everybody or freedom for nobody. [applause] America today finds herself in a unique situation. Historically, revolutions are bloody, oh yes they are. They have never had a bloodless revolution. Or a non-violent revolution. That don't happen even in Hollywood [laughter] You don't have a revolution in which you love your enemy. And you don't have a revolution in which you are begging the system of exploitation to integrate you into it. Revolutions overturn systems. Revolutions destroy systems. A revolution is bloody, but America is in a unique position. She's the only country in history, in the position actually to become involved in a bloodless revolution. The Russian Revolution was bloody, Chinese Revolution was bloody, French Revolution was bloody, Cuban Revolution was bloody. And there was nothing more bloody than the American Revolution. But today, this country can become involved in a revolution that won't take bloodshed. All she's got to do is give the black man in this country everything that's due him, everything. [applause] I hope that the white man can see this. 'Cause if you don't see it you're finished. If you don't see it you're going to become involved in some action in which you don't have a chance. We don't care anything about your atomic bomb; it's useless, because other countries have atomic bombs. When two or three different countries have atomic bombs, nobody can use them. So it means that the white man today is without a weapon. If you want some action you've got to come on down to Earth, and there's more black people on Earth than there are white people. [applause] I only got a couple more minutes. The white man can never win another war on the ground. His days of war – victory – his days of battleground victory are over. Can I prove it? Yes. Take all the action that's going on this Earth right now that he's involved in. Tell me where he's winning – nowhere. Why, some rice farmers, some rice farmers! Some rice-eaters ran him out of Korea, yes they ran him out of Korea. Rice-eaters, with nothing but gym shoes and a rifle and a bowl of rice, took him and his tanks and his napalm and all that other action he's supposed to have and ran him across the Yalu. Why? Because the day that he can win on the ground has passed. Up in French Indochina, those little peasants, rice-growers, took on the might of the French army and ran all the Frenchmen, you remember Dien Bien Phu! The same thing happened in Algeria, in Africa. They didn't have anything but a rifle. The French had all these highly mechanized instruments of warfare. But they put some guerilla action on. And a white man can't fight a guerilla warfare. Guerilla action takes heart, take nerve, and he doesn't have that. [cheering] He's brave when he's got tanks. He's brave when he's got planes. He's brave when he's got bombs. He's brave when he's got a whole lot of company along with him. But you take that little man from Africa and Asia; turn him loose in the woods with a blade. A blade. [cheering] That's all he needs. All he needs is a blade. And when the sun comes down – goes down and it's dark, it's even-Stephen. [cheering] So it's the, it's the ballot or the bullet. Today, our people can see that we're faced with a government conspiracy. This government has failed us. The senators who are filibustering concerning your and my rights, that's the government. Don't say it's southern senators, this is the government. This is a government filibuster. It's not a segregationist filibuster, it's a government filibuster. Any kind of activity that takes place on the floor of the Congress or the Senate, that's the government. Any kind of dilly-dallying, that's the government. Any kind of pussy-footing, that's the government. Any kind of act that's designed to delay or deprive you and me, right now, of getting full rights, that's the government that's responsible. And anytime you find the government involved in a conspiracy to violate the citizenship or the civil rights of a people in 1964, then you are wasting your time going to that government expecting redress. Instead you have to take that government to the world court and accuse it of genocide and all of the other crimes that it is guilty of today. [applause] So those of us whose political and economic and social philosophy is black nationalism have become involved in the civil rights struggle. We have injected ourselves into the civil rights struggle. And we intend to expand it from the level of civil rights to the level of human rights. As long as you fight it on the level of civil rights, you're under Uncle Sam's jurisdiction. You're going to his court expecting him to correct the problem. He created the problem. He's the criminal! You don't take your case to the criminal, you take your criminal to court. [applause] When the government of South Africa began to trample upon the human rights of the people of South Africa they were taken to the U.N. When the government of Portugal began to trample upon the rights of our brothers and sisters in Angola, it was taken before the U.N. Why, even the white man took the Hungarian question to the U.N. And just this week, Chief Justice Goldberg was crying over three million Jews in Russia, about their human rights – charging Russia with violating the U.N. Charter because of its mistreatment of the human rights of Jews in Russia. Now you tell me how can the plight of everybody on this Earth reach the halls of the United Nations and you have twenty-two million Afro-Americans whose churches are being bombed, whose little girls are being murdered, whose leaders are being shot down in broad daylight? Now you tell me why the leaders of this struggle have never taken [recording impaired ] [their case to the U.N.?] So our next move is to take the entire civil rights struggle – problem – into the United Nations and let the world see that Uncle Sam is guilty of violating the human rights of 22 million Afro-Americans right down to the year of 1964 and still has the audacity or the nerve to stand up and represent himself as the leader of the free world? [cheering]Not only is he a crook, he's a hypocrite. Here he is standing up in front of other people, Uncle Sam, with the blood of your and mine mothers and fathers on his hands. With the blood dripping down his jaws like a bloody-jawed wolf. And still got the nerve to point his finger at other countries. In 1964 you can't even get civil rights legislation and this man has got the nerve to stand up and talk about South Africa or talk about Nazi Germany or talk about Portugal. No, no more days like those! [applause] So I say in my conclusion, the only way we're going to solve it: we got to unite. We got to work together in unity and harmony. And black nationalism is the key. How we gonna overcome the tendency to be at each other's throats that always exists in our neighborhood? And the reason this tendency exists – the strategy of the white man has always been divide and conquer. He keeps us divided in order to conquer us. He tells you, I'm for separation and you for integration, and keep us fighting with each other. No, I'm not for separation and you're not for integration, what you and I are for is freedom. [applause] Only, you think that integration will get you freedom; I think that separation will get me freedom. We both got the same objective, we just got different ways of getting' at it. [applause] So I studied this man, Billy Graham, who preaches white nationalism. That's what he preaches. [applause] I say, that's what he preaches. The whole church structure in this country is white nationalism, you go inside a white church – that's what they preaching, white nationalism. They got Jesus white, Mary white, God white, everybody white – that's white nationalism. [cheering] So what he does – the way he circumvents the jealousy and envy that he ordinarily would incur among the heads of the church – whenever you go into an area where the church already is, you going to run into trouble. Because they got that thing, what you call it, syndicated … they got a syndicate just like the racketeers have. I'm going to say what's on my mind because the preachers already proved to you that they got a syndicate. [applause] And when you're out in the rackets, whenever you're getting in another man's territory, you know, they gang up on you. And that's the same way with you. You run into the same thing. So how Billy Graham gets around that, instead of going into somebody else's territory, like he going to start a new church, he doesn't try and start a church, he just goes in preaching Christ. And he says anybody who believe in him, you go wherever you find him. So, this helps all the churches, and since it helps all the churches, they don't fight him. Well, we going to do the same thing, only our gospel is black nationalism. His gospel is white nationalism, our gospel is black nationalism. And the gospel of black nationalism, as I told you, means you should control your own, the politics of your community, the economy of your community, and all of the society in which you live should be under your control. And once you…feel that this philosophy will solve your problem, go join any church where that's preached. Don't join any church where white nationalism is preached. Why, you can go to a Negro church and be exposed to white nationalism. 'Cause when you are on – when you walk in a Negro church and see a white Jesus and a white Mary and some white angels, that Negro church is preaching white nationalism. [applause] But, when you go to a church and you see the pastor of that church with a philosophy and a program that's designed to bring black people together and elevate black people, join that church. Join that church. If you see where the NAACP is preaching and practicing that which is designed to make black nationalism materialize, join the NAACP. Join any kind of organization – civic, religious, fraternal, political or otherwise that's based on lifting the black man up and making him master of his own community. [applause]

In this very candid episode, I talk about myself and how I can help your company using my training and leadership consulting expertise. It's not a pretty, well-wrapped marketing pitch. This one was hard to record and may be equally as hard to listen to...but I needed to get the words out.

Market Research: What Do Customers Really Want? In this episode, Johnathan Thomas explains how conducting thorough Market Research can help you grow your business. As young entrepreneurs, we often sensationalize the process of Building a Business from Scratch. On Day 1 you Start Your Business. Three years later you're a multi-millionaire, but what happens in between? If you’re doing things right, the answer to that question should be a lot of testing, observing, questioning, and reconfiguring. If we put the right amount of energy into Market Research up front, it will save time, money, and show our customers that we really care about what they need…not what we want to sell. Ivana Taylor at QuestionPro.com put together a Great List of Ideas to help you get started…check out the highlights: Tip #1: Define the objective of your research. “Having an objective for your Market Research will flesh out what kind of data you need to collect.” Tip #2: Learn About Your Target Customers. “When you take time to define your target customer you can also find the best products and services to sell to them.” Tip #3: Recognize that knowing who you serve helps you define who you do not. “It’s okay to decide on who is not a part of your target customer base. In fact, for small businesses knowing who you don’t cater to can be essential to helping you grow.” Tip #4: Learn from your competition. “By…doing in-person research, you can dig up a lot of information to help you define your unique selling position and create even better offers for your customers.” Tip #5: Get your target customers to open up and tell you everything. “A good customer survey is one of the most valuable Market Research Tools because it gives you the opportunity to get inside of your customer’s head. Many customers will be delighted to offer feedback. You can even give customers who fill out surveys a gift like a special coupon for their next purchase.” Run Your Numbers At the end of our episode, Johnathan says the best thing an aspiring business owner can do is “Run Your Numbers”. As it is with Market Research, we have to put our passion and egos aside when making business decisions. Identify your fixed costs, variable costs, potential revenue streams, and optimal price for your goods or services that will allow you to make a profit. Remember, a business without income is just an expensive hobby.
