I have always considered myself to be culturally curious. Since I was younger there was always a draw to lean in and learn others stories. Identifying different traditions in the lives of those around me always struck me as an invitation to a whole new world, and deeper connection.  As we dive more into parenthood, I have been thinking a lot recently about how I can raise Wesley to be just as curious, and intentional with getting to know the stories of those at our table. A few years ago I heard Trillia Newbell speak at a Thinq Media Conference that we were attending, and I remember that she communicated with authority, invitation to action and that her words, though powerful, landed softly. When I was given the opportunity to host a conversation with her surrounding her new book, Celebrating Around The Table, the answer was an easy yes. Through this book and conversation Trillia will lead us through topics like: How to raise culturally curious kids What intentional living means as a family Resources on reflecting on black history month for all ages Recipes that celebrate her rich cultural background and how they are used to enhance her families cultural celebration Trillia and I laughed and reflected throughout this whole conversation, and we invite you to join us wherever you listen to podcasts. Buy your own copy of Trillia's book hereFollow Trillia @trillianewbell Purchase a copy of the book that Trillia references in the episode: The art of self forgetfulnessThis Episode is Sponsored By: Feast & Fettle get $25 off your first week of hand crafted, flavor packed meals delivered straight to your door so you can soak up the season with code GATHER25 at checkout Watch our Youtube episodes here!

Send us a textKendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show left many talking, but was it a masterstroke of cultural commentary or just another performance? We unravel the layers of symbolism, from Kendrick's subliminal jabs at Drake to the cultural gravitas that Samuel L. Jackson and Serena Williams brought to the stage. Our chat isn't just about music, though. We speculate on who in the rap game could stand toe-to-toe with Kendrick in a battle, with names like Eminem, Nas, and Jay-Z tossed into the ring. And let's not forget the smooth sounds of SZA, whose touch added a unique flair to the show that resonated with audiences far and wide.Celebrating Black History Month, we tip our hats to African-American pioneers in the automotive industry and beyond. With figures like Garrett Morgan and C.R. Patterson leading the charge, we reflect on their legacy and impact. Our talk takes a turn into the intricacies of loyalty and relationships in high-profile circles, analyzing the drama between 50 Cent, Big Meech, and Rick Ross. It's a peek into how personal and professional alliances play out amidst public scrutiny, and what it means to truly support one another. For a lighter touch, we dive into the world of celebrity feuds and outlandish antics. Soulja Boy's unexpected diss track against Marlon Wayans sparks laughter and thoughtful discussion on generational battles in the spotlight. Meanwhile, Kanye West's latest escapades, from Grammy grievances to wild theories about his wife's public persona, provide plenty of fodder for discussion. As we round off our episode, we sprinkle in a dash of TV drama, wedding speculation, and the cultural importance of supporting Black businesses during Juneteenth cookouts, ensuring a perfect blend of humor and cultural insight.FOLLOW. Hey Sis, This is a special episode of Start Living Sustainable. In the spirit of gratitude and respect, I'd like to honor a few trailblazers who laid a foundation and have carved out a path in sustainability, a path that I tread with deep commitment. Celebrating Black History Month deepens my appreciation, but it's the daily, heartfelt exchanges I have with women who share this vision—that ignite a collective drive for a healthier, toxin-free existence. African-American leaders in sustainability and environmentalism are pivotal in promoting sustainable living, addressing ecological issues, and ensuring the communities reap the benefits of eco-conscious practices. Their dedication advances environmental stewardship and amplifies African-American perspectives in shaping environmental policies and sustainable futures. February is Black History Month, an important and special season but one that can be viewed with suspicion or cynicism. Across racial lines, this month can have complicated perceptions. It is also often commodified by corporations and organizations in ways that can feel performative and hollow. So today we want to dig into the good intent of what Black History Month is about, the hard but powerful opportunity it creates for all of us, and the biblical basis for telling complicated stories with remembrance and hope. In honor of Black History Month, Yolanda Renee King talks with host Suzanne McCabe about her new picture book, We Dream A World: Carrying the Light From My Grandparents Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Yolanda is joined in the studio by her editor, Andrea Davis Pinkney, who is vice president and executive editor of Scholastic Trade Publishing. Yolanda is only 15 years old. Already, she is following in her grandparents' footsteps as an activist and author. “Leaders are those who ask the questions, who challenge things,” she says. We Dream a World, which is illustrated by Nicole Tadgell, evokes the legacy of Yolanda's grandparents and exhorts members of her generation to follow their own dreams for “liberty, justice, and food for all.” → Resources We Dream a World: Learn more about 15-year-old activist and author Yolanda Renee King and her “love letter” to her grandparents. Without her efforts, there would be no King legacy, and his message and the dream would have been gone with him.” Andrea Davis Pinkney, vice president and executive editor, Scholastic Trade Publishing “No matter your age, your race, where you live, what you believe, the family that you come from, you can make a difference, big or small.” “[Tadgell's art] presents this canvas of what dreaming a world can be.
