In this episode I'm speaking with https://twitter.com/edu_feminist (Rosie Georgiou). Rosie is an English teacher, KS5 Lead and PhD student living in London. She first came to my attention during the most recent TeachMeetEnglishIcons event, in which she discussed the process and benefits of creative writing in English. During our conversation we discuss: The best text Rosie's ever read, taught or been taught? The ways in which creative writing can be metacognitive The relationship between creative writing and pastoral matters The advantages of journaling and free writing and how they play a part in Rosie's practice How she has led students to legitimately reflect on the creative process and why And lastly, how often does Rosie's dept explore creative writing in a year level or across KS3 It was real pleasure to speak to Rosie at length about the creative process as well as how that translates into teaching practice, feedback and assessment. For those of you who haven't seen it, I'd really recommend her presentation for TeachMeets too. In this episode I talk with Mags Amond, a retired post-primary school teacher and PhD candidate, about her research on a form of informal continuous professional development among teachers all over the world. It is called TEACHMEET where teaching professionals come together to encourage, edify and ‘teach' each other through their own lived experiences. #TeachMeet is a phenomenon that is completely organized and facilitated on a voluntary basis. Click HERE for Accessible Transcript Mags reflects on the influence of her parents and their lifelong commitment to volunteering and supporting her educational pursuits. Mags talks about life in ‘the slow lane' as a part-time PhD, her relationships with fellow research colleagues, the back channels of communication on the journey, and the unexpected twists along the way that have significantly impacted her understanding of research as a scaffolded process. Mags explains that a newfound awareness of herself as a ‘pracademic' has transformed her way of thinking about research and practice. Mags likens the beginning of TeachMeets to that of a love child of the unconference world and the growing social media presence in 2006. We talk about how pivoting online due to Covid_19, has had a positive effect on #TeachMeets because educators are hungry for connection, community, belonging and ownership of professional conversations and learning outside of the school environment. Mags shares her philosophy on the importance of attending #TeachMeets to find ‘something for a Monday' that you can use for personal or professional enrichment or your classroom teaching practice. She provides a mental visual of ‘desire lines' that are worn into the ground through a desire to take oneself from where they are to where they want to be – as part of the #TeachMeet process that just becomes a natural path for informal authentic professional learning. In this week's podcast Dale Pickles from B Squared is joined by Carol Allen and John Galloway to discuss CPD for Inclusion. Apart from this obviously amazing podcast, we are discussing where can teachers go to access the information and support they need in order to improve their inclusive practice. Carol is an education advisor for ICT and Inclusion in particular supporting the London Grid For Learning and Hartlepool LA. She was named one of the top ten educators for 2018 in the field of educational technology. This was down to all her amazing work on inclusion. John is a specialist in the use of technology to improve educational opportunities for children and young people with special educational needs. He spends the majority of his time working with Tower Hamlets LA, but also does lots of working as a writer, consultant and trainer. Teaching is one of the professions that is always changing and there is always a need to continue to learn and develop. As well as CPD directed by schools, many teachers will find their own ways to learn and keep up to date with the latest changes and information. There needs to be a lot more CPD around SEND for all teachers, not just for SENCOs and those working in special schools. With pressures on time and money, it is not easy to achieve. In the podcast we discuss ways teachers can access CPD around SEND, including informal training like Teachmeets. We also discuss the impact COVID will have on CPD going forward and how schools will need to adapt.
