In each episode, we aim to bring you an interesting guest who shares their wealth of expertise, knowledge and insights around a relevant topic. Our aim is simple: to inspire and equip you with new insights that will empower your teaching and learning or leadership activities. So, get ready to dive into this episode's conversation, exploring exciting topics such as Digital Strategy, effective use of technology, change management, AI in the classroom, leading on technology, and questions to ask vendors at edtech events such as the forthcoming Bett 2024! In this episode, we were delighted to be welcomed by a friend of NetSupport, Laura Knight. Now a learning consultant at Berkhamsted School, Laura is a former Languages teacher and middle and senior leader with a solid understanding of what effective technology use looks like at both a macro and a micro scale. In their conversation, Laura and our Head of Education, Mark Anderson, discuss many aspects around the hot topic of AI – but this chat, of course, dived far deeper than the latest top tools to use (although she does share some great tools to explore at the end of the recording, in a TeachMeet style). Recognising that there are no silver bullets in education, and certainly not with educational technology, Laura and Mark explore change management; how to raise the bar of confidence, competence and cognisance with the use of technology; why AI represents a real ‘internet' moment of change for schools – all grounded with practical ideas and tips just as useful for teachers as they are for leaders. To learn more and pick up those three top tools to check out (and the bonus one she just had to include!) access the latest episode of Insights with NetSupport below!
A Dash of SaLT Podcast: Fresh discussions on Society and Learning Today
In this episode I talk with Mags Amond, a retired post-primary school teacher and PhD candidate, about her research on a form of informal continuous professional development among teachers all over the world. It is called TEACHMEET where teaching professionals come together to encourage, edify and ‘teach' each other through their own lived experiences. #TeachMeet is a phenomenon that is completely organized and facilitated on a voluntary basis. Click HERE for Accessible Transcript Mags reflects on the influence of her parents and their lifelong commitment to volunteering and supporting her educational pursuits. Mags talks about life in ‘the slow lane' as a part-time PhD, her relationships with fellow research colleagues, the back channels of communication on the journey, and the unexpected twists along the way that have significantly impacted her understanding of research as a scaffolded process. Mags explains that a newfound awareness of herself as a ‘pracademic' has transformed her way of thinking about research and practice. Mags likens the beginning of TeachMeets to that of a love child of the unconference world and the growing social media presence in 2006. We talk about how pivoting online due to Covid_19, has had a positive effect on #TeachMeets because educators are hungry for connection, community, belonging and ownership of professional conversations and learning outside of the school environment. Mags shares her philosophy on the importance of attending #TeachMeets to find ‘something for a Monday' that you can use for personal or professional enrichment or your classroom teaching practice. She provides a mental visual of ‘desire lines' that are worn into the ground through a desire to take oneself from where they are to where they want to be – as part of the #TeachMeet process that just becomes a natural path for informal authentic professional learning. Come, listen and learn! Website: magsamond.com Twitter: #TeachMeet @magsamond

Leading projects around the world for clients in education and industry, Ewan McIntosh is the passionate and energising tour de force behind NoTosh. As the name suggests, NoTosh is a jargon-free but game-changing strategic consultancy with a passion for learning and a conviction that innovation and creativity can change the way people think, the way they learn and the way they work A highly regarded keynote speaker at events around the world, Ewan is also the author of How To Come Up With Great Ideas and Actually Make Them Happen and regularly writes about learning on his blog (and previously here). Ewan's professional career started as a French and German high school teacher in Scotland back in the 1990s. He wanted to find new ways to help students engage with their learning and felt strongly that technology was both critical to this and underused in the classroom, so his classes were among the first in Europe to podcast and blog as part of their daily learning. Ewan then became the National Advisor on Learning and Technology Futures for the Scottish Government, and in 2006, with some friends in a pub in Edinburgh he began Teachmeet as a way to enable teachers to network and learn from peers and disrupt the traditional model of prescribed teacher professional development. In 2008, Ewan became the Digital Commissioner at Channel 4. It was there that he became fascinated by the strategies and tactics that colleagues were using to create imaginative and engaging digital services for young people. So he founded notosh in order to make similar impacts for young people in education. Tom Rogers is an experienced teacher and middle leader, having worked at schools in the UK for 9 years and internationally for 4 as a history teacher, head of history and latterly assistant headteacher. He is now back in the UK. Toms passion is in making schools better places for teachers to work in. This passion has inspired him to write more than 100 blogs for the TES and share with the profession through his own twitter account; @rogershistory. Tom has also produced videos for his youtube channel, has his own podcast and more than 20,000 students use his online courses. In 2015, Tom set up the teachmeet network “teachmeet icons” which now hosts free annual events for teachers across the UK. Teachmeeticons has expanded significantly and has become a notable force for teacher CPD in the UK. We discuss: Tell us about your journey to this point and what you’re working on at the moment . Could we ask about your journey through classroom teaching into leadership and whether your think good teachers make good leaders? Teachmeet icons was a real force for good in the profession , tell us about the genesis of this idea and where we are up to with this now? Your resources have been used by thousands of teachers and students . Tell us how important sharing resources can be and it’s impact on workload , an issue I know you are passionate about. Recently I met you on your tour of interviewing school leaders . What were your biggest takeaways from that experience and could you share some gems from the leaders? I am a huge fan of your blogs . My first experience going back some time was the nightmares and dreams blog .....how relevant is that still for new teachers? I love your podcast! Doing it live was just amazing and so brave . Will this be coming back? Your most recent 2 blogs ‘the journey’ and ‘the dark side of international teaching’ have been hugely emotive and gripping . Could you share your thought process in deciding to work abroad and what you gained from the experience . Where do you see yourself in teaching next? You do so much good for the profession so on behalf of teachers thank you ! Where can we see you on the speaking circuit next ? Thank you ! This week I am in conversation with Educationalist, Author, Writer,Consultant, Orator and Liberal Artist Mr Martin Robinson. Martin is a Teacher with 20 years experience working in state schools in London. Martin was an AST,Head of Department,Head of Faculty and an Assistant Headteacher. Martin is interested in developing teaching and learning building on the tradition of grammar, dialectic and rhetoric. We are nattering this week about Martin's latest book which I consider to be an essential read namely 'Curriculum-Athena versus the Machine' . This book has fundamentally changed my view on the rationale for a knowledge rich curriculum, moulded my thinking on extra-curricular activities and engendered cognitive dissonance when I consider Martin's views on educating for freedom. The book explores the educational value of a curriculum rooted in the pursuit of wisdom and advocates the enshrinement of such a curriculum as the central concern of an academic institution. Martin argues that teachers need to be liberated from policy-led prescription in order to design curricula which brings subjects forward rather than the pursuit of outcomes. TDT Section This week we have a TDT excellence hub school , South Shore Academy launching a TeachMeet as a way to promote all the amazing work going on in Blackpool . They will have teachers from the school and experts from all over the area sharing their wisdom. Flip the System Australia was published in 2018, and brings together perspectives on education policy and practice in response to issues such as increasingly top-down education reform and outside interests influencing educational policy. This episode presents content from TeachMeet Flip the System, which was held at SHORE school on 29 March, 2019, and served as an unofficial launch of the book. From the website: "Based in the unique Australian context, this book situates Australian education policy, research and practice within the international education narrative. It argues that professionals within schools should be supported, empowered and welcomed into policy discourse, not dictated to by top-down bureaucracy. It advocates for a flipping, flattening and democratising of the education system, in Australia and around the world."
