Leadership isn't always about setting big picture strategy and chairing Town Hall meetings: it's also about taking leadership micro-steps and getting the basics right. In today's episode, we are talking about the fact that adaptability and emotional resilience will be some of the most vital skills leaders will need this decade. We are talking about:The core of adaptability: having clear and flexible expectationsSupporting yourself and your team emotionally through changeLearning how to be 'light on your feet' to pivot and adapt more readilyMaking it psychologically safe for you and your team to have 'human' experiences like doubt or fearAnd so much more...!Something Rebecca said today:" In her book The Gift of Change, Marianne Williamson says, “The speed of change today is faster than the human psyche seems able to handle” and talks to feelings of overwhelm as we reconcile our personal lives with everything else going on all around us such as non-stop technological advancements; a 24-hour news cycle (with ever more extreme stories); and the 24/7 demands too of social media. 21st century change is rapid. The question is: can humans keep up? Not just practically speaking, but emotionally too? And maybe, critically, does everyone want to?" He has worked at the most senior levels in the public and private sectors in Asia Pacific, European and global roles. You start to think instead about how your team impacts the whole organisation. Women are too often penalised, and prevented opportunities to progress to leadership, because their boss might lead (and deliver results) in a different way to them; this is bias. In today's episode I am talking about the penalty, that women often unknowingly experience because of how their leadership style is evaluated. I am exploring:What leadership evaluation bias isHow women can be judged on HOW they deliver rather than on the result itselfThe different approach a lot of women take when it comes to data mining and decision making and how that might differ from their male stakeholdersWhat you can do if you feel like your leadership is being unfairly judgedAnd how to challenge your own leadership evaluation bias if you feel it could be holding talented women in your team backSomething Rebecca said today:"What IS performance? Is it how you deliver an outcome, or the outcome itself? Women tend to lead differently and you don't want to be penalised simply because you don't deliver results in the same way your boss might." Career Sponsorship has become critical to women's advancement to leadership. Today, we are discussing the behaviours and actions the most exceptional Sponsors are taking to ensure more talented women are promoted to leadership.Systemic bias means that men are exposed to opportunities in their careers more readily than their female peers are. Career Sponsors are needed to address that imbalance. Sponsors are influential leaders within an organisation, who believe in the moral and commercial importance of inclusion, equity and diversity of thought. They are proactive advocates of the talented women they sponsor. In this episode I am taking you through 3 of the most effective ways a Career Sponsor can help support, and fast track women through the pipeline - they are necessary catalysts to create change faster.Something Rebecca said today:"A career sponsor actively seeks out opportunities for their sponsee. She provides real life examples and practical takeaways for leaders related to strengthening trust and teamwork, even in the face of uncertainty and fear. There are two categories of trust-building activities in leadership: our everyday actions and our responses to episodic crises. Our day-to-day trust-building activities should not be neglected during times of crises.Trust can be diminished - or strengthened - during challenging times.Fear is a major contributor to silo creation, working against our heightened need for teamwork and collaboration.Leaders must anchor their teams during uncertainty by remaining calm and connected.Acknowledging threats while reinforcing stability is crucial for maintaining trust.Visibility and accessibility of leaders are essential during challenging times.Reminding teams of their past resilience can strengthen trust and teamwork.Need help improving the culture, performance, and results of your healthcare organization? Do you have a tendency to say YES - or saying nothing at all - when really, you want to say NO? Today I am exploring 6 different scenarios where you might need to say 'No!' more often in your career!I am sharing some powerful reframes so that you can say 'no', without having to say 'no' at all!We are talking too about how saying 'no' can result in huge benefits to you, as well as greater ROI for your organisation! Pushing back, and saying 'no', has never been easier! I'll see you inside!Something I said today:"Saying 'No' can be presented in lots of different ways to make it more palatable. For example, you can say, "Look, I don't agree with this" or 'I think we need to take a step back and discuss this more" or "I feel like this is the wrong decision to take, can we look at this again? Working on reframes like this can make it extremely easy to push back and say 'no'." Does your organisation struggle to retain high-potential female talent without knowing why? Today I am looking at 5 key reasons organisations struggle to retain key female talent mid-career. We are discussing:Culture, inclusion and belongingTransparency - this is a biggie!Active sponsorshipLeadership developmentLet's be really honest about the barriers women are facing on a day-to-day basis and start taking measurable action towards creating more enriching careers for women.Something I said today:"Women must be made aware when internal roles are opening up for application. Too often they are not made equally aware of potential opportunities and so can't apply. This has a compound impact: not only do they not even have the opportunity to present themselves as a potential candidate, their exclusion can lead to them doubting the support they have in the organisation which can then also diminish their confidence and sense of belonging further." If you're SUPER strategic, you're always thinking three steps ahead of everyone else which can be extremely useful but NOT if you're losing everyone along the way. How would I define someone who is SUPER Strategic?Your brain will work quickly and be filled with ideas and ways to connect all those different ideasYou'll be solving problems people haven't even thought of yetThe people around you might not see the 'problems' you're outlining as being 'problems' at all You may have difficulty prioritising or communicating your thoughts so that you are understoodBeing SUPER strategic can be frustrating - for you and your team! In this episode I am sharing 5 tips to help SUPER Strategists make the most of their super power whilst still engaging and influencing others as they go!Something I said today:"From Neuro-science we know that people compute information differently, deleting and retaining different pieces of any communication based on their own preferences, experiences and bias. Even if you think your communication is clear, it still might not be understood in the way you intend. And if you want to influence others, you need first to seek understanding and engagement before you persuade." That objective review will take you out of the weeds and the DOING of your career... and into the strategic control seat. And then - AND ONLY THEN - will you start getting the promotions and opportunities you deserve!Something I said today:"A coach is skilled to hold space for you and help you challenge whether what you're doing right now is indeed the right path to be on." Who said career 'success' is only about climbing the career ladder and going UP? Today I am exploring the metaphor of your career being a 'jungle gym' instead full of rich, lateral experiences. In her book Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg references the metaphor of a 'career jungle gym' which she credits to Forbes' journalist Pattie Sellers. It's the idea that 'success' doesn't have to be a linear path. And you don't even need to know your ultimate destination. In all the years I have been a specialist career coach for women, I have seen that people who diversify their experiences are better off in the long term (certainly if they are chasing a leadership role). In this episode I am exploring some ways to help you determine your own career path so that it feels like you're making good decisions... and are having a lot of fun along the way!Something I said today:"Where the career gym metaphor really excites me is it's based on chasing OPPORTUNITY rather than chasing job titles. This is hugely liberating and can lead to you making some really good decisions for your career." What if you learned something new that made you think: 'I wish I had known this 10 YEARS AGO!' How might life, or your opportunities, have been different? A number of my clients have said this exact thing to me about the career strategies they learn in my program... let's dive into why getting a coach earlier - even today - will set you up for success. In this ep, I am exploring how to find out if you'd benefit from working with a coach, like me (or otherwise!)...We are talking ambition, goals, (as well as having neither)...We are talking about feeling stuck, lacking visibility and support...What to expect from an initial call with a coach...And the 3 very tangible reasons why you must NOT wait another month, another week, another day before reaching out to a coach and getting the support you need to succeed!Something I said today:"My coaching niche is two-fold. It's about career strategy first and foremost. What's in it for you? What do you want from the next 12 months or 5 years? It's also about giving you the strategies - and the structure - to help you fast track your career, whether that's fresh opportunities or promotions to leadership or something else entirely that will give you the meaning and stretch you're looking for." Your team is full of individuals with different values (preferences and styles). The question I am posing today is: do you see merit in, or do you judge, values that are different from your own?I am looking at two different values-preferences today:1. Rational vs Emotional2. Impulsive vs ThoughtfulHow do you identify with each of these paired groups? Are there people in your team with the same preference/ style as you?Are there people in your team with the opposite approach to you?Do you see merit in all approaches or do you judge those that aren't like your own?Are you benefitting from the collective intelligence your team has because of these differences, or not?Something I said today:"As a leader it's important to look at the team as a whole and ask if you're fully utilising your collective intelligence - which means valuing different approaches to solving problems as being equally worthy." Jump in and let's tackle this common belief together!Something I said today:"'Am I Good Enough' really means 'Am I Good Enough, Just As I Am?' This implies there's something missing: you need MORE experience or MORE qualifications to be worthy or valuable enough. But is that true? I say not!" In this concluding part of this 3-part series, I am going to be sharing a major systemic barrier to women's career progression, namely The Work-Life Barrier. We are talking today about primary care givers, paternity leave, domestic duties, the Mental Load, societal stigmas and a whole lot of research that highlights the current imbalance between men and women in the workplace.Something I said today:"Until the stigma around men being accepted as class parents, as primary care givers for their own children, as worthy of lengthy paternity leave - until that stigma ends, we won't achieve genuine gender parity in the workplace." In this 3-part series I am going to be sharing the major systemic barriers to women progressing in their careers: today we are talking about The Bias Barrier.Bias can be unconscious (and conscious) and is a key factor underpinning the slowness of progress in seeing more women rise to positions of leadership and power. In this episode, I'm talking about three key factors:1. Affinity bias - the reason why many male leaders hire more men with similar experiences and backgrounds as them2. Loyalty bias - the assumption that women will remain loyal to their organisations, even if they are continuously overlooked for promotion3. Common assumptions made about women's needs and career aspirations, that are often wrongSomething I said today:"Bias occurs throughout the entire lifecycle of a women's career: from recruitment, professional development opportunities to promotion, mentoring advice and compensation discussions - at every career transaction, qualified women can be side-lined." In this 3-part series I am going to be sharing the major systemic barriers to women progressing in their careers: today we are talking about The Culture Barrier. Most STEM and Financial environments remain heavily male dominated and it can have an impact on those organisations being able to hire and retain key female talent. In this episode, I'm talking about three key factors:1. The emotional impact of being one of a few women in a male dominated culture2. The fact that these working environments often fail to play to women's strengths and values3. Male dominated leadership teams provide little to no female mentorship and role modelling opportunities for women working earlier in the pipelineSomething I said today:"Male dominated working cultures don't need to be at that 'hostile or intimidating extreme' to exclude women still. By their very nature, these environments can be unwelcoming and impart that feeling in women that they don't belong here."
