Sometimes  the most difficult challenge senior leadership faces is finding purpose in their work.  It's not that they don't care about the company or their teams.  It's a more subtle sense that something is missing.  The job is no longer fulfilling.   That they are stagnating or are meaningless in their roles. This can be particularly perplexing when overall you are successful at what you do – and it's not like there's something else that looks a lot better.Today we are joined by the fabulous Marla Bace.  Having successfully navigated several career transitions herself, Marla now helps senior leadership find renewed purpose in their work – or identify what their next - more fulfilling - role might be.In this episode of A Seat at The Table, Marla will share Why leadership needs to look beyond self-awareness  and emotional intelligence, and lean into intuition and purpose in order to find work that aligns with them.Practical strategies for senior executives who are facing career boredom that can help reignite excitement and identify strategic pivots.Balancing data-driven decisions with intuition to build greater team engagement and loyalty. This episode is part of our new Leadership Edge series. We developed this series because while performance gets you in the room.Presence is what makes people listen. We're unpacking the leadership skills that help you stand out—create real influence, earn loyalty, and build the right relationships.Because visibility isn't luck. Have you ever spent over a fortnight in Antarctica? Jess Styles recounts a fabulous experience with Homeward Bound doing exactly that!My guest today is Jess Styles who earlier this year spent 16 days on a ship in Antarctica with 120 other women leaders in STEM. Not only did she learn a lot about leadership, ice and penguins... she had the opportunity to self-reflect and heal having undergone cancer treatment only months before. Join Jess and me for this fascinating reflection. Jess, on what she learned:"In Antarctica, we saw extreme nature and got to see places no human has ever set foot in before which was really special. With 120 other STEM leaders onboard our ship over the 16 days, I learned a lot about leadership and what kind of leader I aspire to be. A big part of my learning was self-discovery. Taking time out for me was really important and I'd encourage everyone to do that: take time out for yourself because it isn't selfish - it's needed. It was very freeing to have that time to work out what I really want to do."Links:For Career & Leadership coaching, connect with Rebecca Allen on Linkedin or visit the Illuminate website Rate, Review, & Follow our Show on Apple Podcasts:Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. Today I am sharing a simple 3-step process to help you take stock of everything you have achieved in 2025.I work with a lot of clients throughout the year and one skill I find a lot of people don't exercise is that of reviewing their progress. In our coaching programs, we are big on recapping, reviewing and acknowledging the impact we are making... because if you don't, you can easily fall into the self-doubt trap wondering whether you're adding any value at all! And I don't want that for you!By the end of these 10 minutes, you'll walk away with a simple tool to help you uncover profound evidence of the impact you have made this year so that you can feel proud of your hard work but also have details to give you leverage over the next 12 months. Are you with me?Rebecca on the importance of reviewing your action:"At the end of year it's important to review because it's too easy to forget the value you have been making and get into those imposter style thoughts where you are doubting what you have accomplished. How do defence companies fund growth when the orders from politicians have been promised but the cash isn't forthcoming? Want to build a new factory to double Europe's 155mm ammo production, or tank fleet, or - heavens forbid - drones? Great - but where does the money come from for the infrastructure? Why don't existing MFIs across Europe fill that space? And what might a dedicated defence, security, and resilience offer governments as well as industry? Former Brigadier General Robbie Boyd, now on the Senior Leadership team for the development of the new DSR Bank, explains all. This episode allows those in the national security community who don't have a deep understanding of the financial sector to understand the potential offered by a dedicated banking organisation for defence. Building off the ideas of a NATO bank, and linked directly to the rebuilding of NATO's failed deterrence posture, the DSR bank feels a bit like a game-changer.

What does it mean to 'feel safe' at work? I interviewed 6 different women to find out! In today's episode I am exploring the complexities around feeling safe at work. I have spoken to six different women in their 30s and 40s, from a range of different industries, to understand better how they define the concept of 'safety'. Feeling safe and feeling free go hand in hand.  Because if we're not safe to speak, lead, challenge, or just exist — then we're not free to succeed. To deliver at your best, both for you and your organisation, it's essential that you also feel secure: that people have your back, that you're supported no matter what, and that the office is genuinely a place to learn and grow. And critically that you can come to work feeling physically and emotionally safe to express yourself without judgment, penalty or harassment. Here are the 6 themes that emerged from my conversations, 'safety' is:Feeling free to be myself and to be authentic at workBeing able to assert myself without negative judgment and for my performance to be judged on meritGiven the space to speak, without being interruptedTo come to work without being harassedSharing vulnerabilities, or asking questions, without that being used against you laterBeing able to challenge or disagree without being labelled 'difficult'Rebecca on being labelled 'difficult' when asserting yourself:"A lot of women have this experience: it's a double edged sword: do I assert myself or do I tone it down for fear of coming across as 'overly emotional' or 'aggressive'? It would be rare for men to be judged and labelled in the same way women are." (Rebecca Allen, host - Her Ambitious Career Podcast)Rebecca on feeling unsafe:"Feeling unsafe can compromise your values like authenticity, respect, being valued and integrity. And if you don't feel safe, you might then procrastinate about how to manage the situation or how you could have responded more effectively. Clearly, feeling unsafe at work affects productivity and the bottom line too. Leadership isn't always about setting big picture strategy and chairing Town Hall meetings: it's also about taking leadership micro-steps and getting the basics right. In today's episode, we are talking about the fact that adaptability and emotional resilience will be some of the most vital skills leaders will need this decade. We are talking about:The core of adaptability: having clear and flexible expectationsSupporting yourself and your team emotionally through changeLearning how to be 'light on your feet' to pivot and adapt more readilyMaking it psychologically safe for you and your team to have 'human' experiences like doubt or fearAnd so much more...!Something Rebecca said today:" In her book The Gift of Change, Marianne Williamson says, “The speed of change today is faster than the human psyche seems able to handle” and talks to feelings of overwhelm as we reconcile our personal lives with everything else going on all around us such as non-stop technological advancements; a 24-hour news cycle (with ever more extreme stories); and the 24/7 demands too of social media. 21st century change is rapid. Women are too often penalised, and prevented opportunities to progress to leadership, because their boss might lead (and deliver results) in a different way to them; this is bias. In today's episode I am talking about the penalty, that women often unknowingly experience because of how their leadership style is evaluated. I am exploring:What leadership evaluation bias isHow women can be judged on HOW they deliver rather than on the result itselfThe different approach a lot of women take when it comes to data mining and decision making and how that might differ from their male stakeholdersWhat you can do if you feel like your leadership is being unfairly judgedAnd how to challenge your own leadership evaluation bias if you feel it could be holding talented women in your team backSomething Rebecca said today:"What IS performance?
